March 5 - Alta 48, Fremont 37
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 16 points and Austin
Albrecht had a season-high 12 as Alta pulled away from Fremont
at the start of the fourth quarter in a 5A semifinal game.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks were motivated, and led for most of
the game. Alta opened the fourth period with a 10-0 run to take a
15-point lead. Albrecht played a key role with 10 of his points in the
second half.
Fremont's highlights: The Silverwolves took a 2-0 lead, but played
from behind after that. A 6-0 run just before halftime cut the margin
to 33-30. Fremont had shooting problems, making just 1-9
three-pointers and were decisively outrebounded.
Statistical notes: Brock Smith led Fremont with nine points. The
Silverwolves were coming off an emotional overtime win over No. 1
Bingham the night before. Kyle Davis and Jordan Brown each had
four steals.
What we learned from this game: Fremont fans mouthed off to
Alta's players the night before as the Hawks were leaving the arena
and this apparently motivated the team. It's a good bet Fremont's
players didn't appreciate that.

March 3 - Alta 63, Skyline 54
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 20 of his 30 points in the
second half as Alta hung on to beat Skyline and advance to the 5A
semifinals.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks couldn't relax until late in the game.
They led 54-52 with 3:50 left and then didn't allow another basket.
Jackson Berry, Mitch Winter and Davis hit free throws to put the
game way.
Skyline's highlights: The Eagles rode the scoring of Jaden
Jackson (20 points) to stay with Alta. Skyline held a three-point lead
late in the third quarter. The Eagles didn't shoot well, but made
16-18 free throws. Brian Orr and James Tingey had 10 points each.
Statistical notes: Davis had a significant height advantage over
Skyline and also had 11 rebounds. Mike Staes topped Skyline with
six rebounds. Jordan Brown had four steals. The teams combined
for 13 three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: This was a tougher game than
expected for Alta. The Hawks got some good news, though, in that
Bingham was defeated. Alta will play Fremont in a semifinal game
next.

March 2 - Alta 59, Syracuse 35
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 14 points and Brayden
Beckham had his three-point shot going early as Alta jumped to a
13-0 lead and powered past Syracuse in the 5A state tournament.
Alta's highlights: Playing in front of their home crowd, the Hawks
got a pair of three-pointers from Beckham to stun the Titans. After
Syracuse rallied, Alta put the game away with a 16-3 run in the third
period. Landon Barlow had 10 points.
Syracuse's highlights: The Titans were in shock early, but had a
9-1 run to finish the first quarter to get back into the game. Nick
Winegar had 19 points.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot well from the free-throw line.
Beckham, Davis and Mitch Winter nailed threes for Alta. The Hawks
lost their first home game of the season, then won eight straight.
What we learned from this game: Alta held Syracuse to its
second-lowest scoring total this season, advanced into the 5A
quarterfinals at Weber State's Dee Events Center.

Feb. 19 - Alta 61, Brighton 54
Story of the game: Jordan Brown scored 20 points and Austin
Albrecht led a 16-3 run late in the third quarter as Alta turned away
Brighton and captured the Region 4 championship.
Alta's highlights: Albrecht scored eight points as Alta turned a
36-32 deficit into a 48-39 lead. The Hawks then hit enough free
throws to hang on and savour the moment in front of their home
crowd. Albrecht and Kyle Davis finished with 11 points.
Brighton's highlights: The Bengals trailed most of the game, but
took the lead midway through the third quarter. Sam Wunderli hit a
couple of threes in the fourth to get Brighton within four points, but it
wasn't enough. Wunderli had 21 points, and Corbin Miller 11.
Statistical notes: Albrecht's 11 was a season high. Both teams'
inside players had off nights. Wunderli had three of Brighton's six
three-pointers. Brown and Brayden Beckham each had a pair for
Alta. This was Brown's best-scoring game in two months.
What we learned from this game: Alta won the region title, which
is a great accomplishment, but let's see what happens at state.
Alta's success has been its ability to win games at the end.

Feb. 16 - Alta 59, Jordan 58
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 26 points and Jordan Brown
had 17 as Alta survived to beat Jordan and move within one game
of winning the Region 4 title.
Alta's highlights: This game was close throughout, but Alta took a
59-55 into the final minutes, and then played great defense on the
final possession to prevent Jordan from getting a good shot. It was
Alta's fourth one-point victory in region play.
Jordan's highlights: Kevin Goldsmith led Jordan with 14 points,
and Taylor Smith came off the bench to put in a season-high 11.
The Beetdiggers fired in eight three-point baskets and had a
chance to win at the end.
Statistical notes: Jordan shot just 8-15 from the free-throw line.
Alta was 12-15. Joe Mero and Steve Morgan had nine points each
for Jordan. Alta swept the season series, and has won five straight
in this rivalry.
What we learned from this game: This was a win the Hawks
needed to challenge for the region crown, which will likely be
decided Friday against Brighton. Davis had a great game.

D-News story, click here. For the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click

Feb. 12 - Alta 49, Hillcrest 48
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 16 points, but it was Jordan
Brown's layup with four seconds to go that lifted Alta past
upset-minded Hillcrest in a Region 4 matchup.
Alta's highlights: This game was close throughout, and played at
Hillcrest's preferred pace. Davis was the Hawks' inside threat, and
Jake Baum, Brayden Beckham, Landon Barlow and Mitch Winter
each hit three-pointers.
Hillcrest's highlights: The Huskies trailed most of the game, but
had a chance to win it at the end. Matt Pecht led Hillcrest with 19
points and five different players hit big baskets from three-point
land. Tanner Dastrup and Bridger Dallimore had nine each.
Statistical notes: This was Hillcrest's best defensive effort in
region play. Baum's eight points was a season high.
What we learned from this game: Alta escaped another upset
again and remained tied for first place in Region 4. The Hawks end
the regular season with two difficult games.

Feb. 10 - Alta 64, American Fork 54
Story of the game: Landon Barlow scored a season-high 23
points and Kyle Davis had 15 as Alta rallied with a big third quarter
to edge American Fork in a Region 4 game.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks trailed 30-25 at halftime, but Davis
scored seven quick points to open the third period and Alta soon
had a 10-point lead. Barlow easily had his best game as Hawk,
and nailed four three-pointers.
American Fork's highlights: The Cavemen put a score into Alta.
Center Ben Beddes had 19 points to get American Fork to a big
first-quarter lead. Quincy Bair added 13 points and Ryker Mathews
12.
Statistical notes: Alta outscored AF 21-5 in the pivotal third quarter.
Jordan Brown had a season-low two points. Cody Johnson had
just four. Alta shot 62.5 percent (15-24) from the free-throw line. AF
was 14-17.
What we learned from this game: The Hawks escaped an upset
attempt. Where would they have been without Barlow and Davis?
Alta can't look past the lower-tiered teams like AF and Hillcrest.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. There was no report in the
Provo Herald or Salt Lake Tribune.
Feb. 5 - Alta 53, Lone Peak 42
Story of the game: Cody Johnson led a balanced scoring attack
with 14 points and 14 rebounds, but it was Alta's defense that
made the difference in its Region 4 win over Lone Peak.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks' perimeter defense were tight on
Lone Peak's Nick Emery and Tannon Pederson, and rarely gave
them an open shot. Alta led the entire game, and Kyle Davis made
a couple of big plays in the final quarter to keep the momentum.
Lone Peak's highlights: After trailing 15-6 in the first quarter, Lone
Peak slowly cut the margin to 34-30. Emery still finished with 17
points and Pederson had 13.
Statistical notes: Lone Peak shot 12-36 from the field, including
2-13 from three-point range. Emery was 0-5 on threes. Alta
outrebounded Lone Peak 39-29. Johnson recorded season highs
in points and rebounds.
What we learned from this game: The Hawks played tough
defense and frustrated Lone Peak the entire game, reversing a
66-57 loss earlier this season.

Jan. 29 - Alta 52, Pleasant Grove 51
Story of the game: Mitch Winter and Kyle Davis scored 12 points
each as Alta hung on to beat Pleasant Grove, despite a 28-point
effort by the Vikings' Sefa Tanoai.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks trailed by five points at halftime, but
rallied in the third quarter and the final minutes was played at a
hectic pace. Cody Johnson added nine points and Jordan Brown
eight.
Pleasant Grove's highlights: Tanoai's 28-point effort tied his
season high which, ironically, also came against Alta. Brandon
Thurgood backed up Tanoai with eight points.
Statistical notes: Alta made just 3-10 free throws, while PG was
11-18. Winter had four of Alta's seven three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: Alta beat Pleasant by one point
in its earlier game this season, too. The Hawks are in pretty good
shape to earn a good seed.

Jan. 22 - Brighton 71, Alta 65 (OT)
Story of the game: Corbin Miller scored 26 points, including 11 in
the fourth quarter, to lift Brighton past Alta in a thrilling overtime
game.
Alta's highlights: The game went back-and-forth, but the Hawks
had a nice 10-0 run early in the fourth period that gave them a
48-44 lead and set up the exciting end. Kyle Davis finished with 23
points and Jordan Brown added 18.
Brighton's highlights: Miller was the hero in the fourth quarter, and
then Miller and Matt Chaus made big plays in the overtime for
Brighton. Sam Wunderli finished with 14 points and Austin Hudson
and Derek Newell added seven apiece.
Statistical notes: Alta's Mitch Winter had three treys and was
fouled on another attempt (and made all three free throws). Alta
shot 16-22 from the FT line, while Brighton was 14-24.
What we learned from this game: This was Alta's second straight
overtime game, but lost this one. The Hawks get a week off and
now have four of their final six game at home.

Jan. 20 - Alta 53, Jordan 49 (OT)
Story of the game: Jordan Brown scored 14 points and Brayden
Beckham added 10 as Alta opened the second half with a 10-0 run
and went on to edge Jordan in a Region 4 battle.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks trailed throughout the first half, but
Brown keyed that big scoring spurt that actually lasted the entire
third quarter. Beckham hit the big shot in overtime to give Alta a
three-point lead.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers jumped on Alta early, and
took advantage of Brown's foul trouble to dominate the first half.
Jordan also had a nice rally in the fourth period to force overtime.
Kevin Goldsmith and Steve Morgan were top scorers with 12 points.
Statistical notes: Alta made 11-19 free throws, but Jordan was just
3-11. Alta's Kyle Davis was held to six points. Beckham's 10 points
was his season high. Joe Mero had three treys for Jordan. Alta has
won straight in this rivalry.
What we learned from this game: The Hawks handed Jordan its
first region loss and vaulted the Diggers into first place in Region 4.
Links: Both Salt Lake newspapers had reporters at this game. To

article, click here.
Jan. 15 - Alta 54, Hillcrest 42
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 19 poinst as Alta buried
Hillcrest early and went on to hand the Huskies their third straight
Region 4 loss.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks jumped to an 18-4 first-quarter lead,
and were never really threatened. Landon Barlow tied his season
high with 12 points as Alta won its eighth road game this season.
Hillcrest's highlights: The Huskies scored just 13 points in the
opening half, but got their offense going after that. James Jongejan
led with 10 points. Austin Adams added eight.
Statistical notes: The Hawks shot badly again from the free-throw
line (13-23). Hillcrest was 7-10. Mitch Winter had two treys for Alta.
Hillcrest made just one three-pointer. Hillcrest outscored Alta
29-26 in the second half.
What we learned from this game: This was a convincing win, and
moved Alta near the top of the Region 4 standings again. Davis
could be a region player of the year candidate.

Jan. 13 - Alta 57, American Fork 53
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 22 points and hit several free
throws in the final minutes as Alta held off American Fork in a
Region 4 game.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks led the entire game, and built the
lead to 50-33 with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter. Jordan Brown
added 18 points, and grabbed a big rebound in the final seconds
to halt American Fork's rally.
American Fork's highlights: The Cavemen went on a 20-5 run and
cut the margin to two points in the final minutes of the game.
Marcel Davis scored 18 points and Ben Beddes had 10.
Statistical notes: AF learned to foul someone other than Davis,
and the Hawks missed with charity shots in the final quarter. Alta
finished 20-32 from the line. AF dropped to 0-3 in region, with all
losses by four points or less.
What we learned from this game: This was a good win for Alta,
but free-throw shooting must improve. Most Region 4 games will
be close and every point will count. Davis impressed a lot of
people with his efforts, but Brown came through, too.
Links: The Deseret News had a reporter at the game. To read the
D-News story, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Jan. 8 - Lone Peak 66, Alta 57
Story of the game: Nick Emery and Tannon Pedersen continued
their torrid shooting, combining for 57 points as Lone Peak held on
to beat Alta in a Region 4 game.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks had to ride the scoring of Kyle Davis,
who tied Emery as the game's high scorer with 31 points. Davis
was a one-man show, however, as Lone Peak clamped down on
Jordan Brown.
Lone Peak's highlights: The Knights are a young team, but their
game plan was perfect. Emery had 31 points and Pedersen 25,
and they defended Brown well, holding him scoreless.
Statistical notes: Despite its shooting prowess, Lone Peak was
just 21-38 from the free-throw line and that kept Alta in the game in
the fourth quarter.
What we learned from this game: Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis
said his team was tired from the Brighton game two nights ago.
That's too bad, but that will be the case for all the Region 4 teams
the way the schedule is set up.

Jan. 6 - Alta 50, Pleasant Grove 49
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 19 points and Jordan Brown
had 11 as Alta held off Pleasant Grove, despite a season-high
scoring effort by the Vikings' Sefa Tanoai.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks trailed by one point at halftime, but
outscored PG 19-5 in the third period to take a 13-point lead, and
then held on. Davis came back from a poor outing against
Bingham, and even hit a three-pointer.
PG's highlights: Tanoai led the Vikings' rally and, while they came
close at the end, they couldn't take the lead in front of their
screaming crowd.
Statistical notes: Alta shot 15-25 from the free-throw line; PG was
12-21, meaning both teams left points off the scoreboard. Tanoai
hit three treys for PG.
What we learned from this game: On opening night of Region 4
play, all three games were decided by three points or less. Free
throws make a difference.
