March 2 - vs. Weber (L 32-34)

* - Region 2 games
Home games in CAPS
                            ALTA BOYS BASKETBALL
March 2 - Weber 34, Alta 32

Story of the game: Ryan Graves scored 12 points, and Carson
Fuller hit a key three-pointer and two free throws late in the game,
to lift Weber past Alta in the first round of the 5A state tournament.

Alta's key moment: The Hawks started the game poorly, trailing
13-2 after the first quarter, but they rallied to the tie game at
halftime. They couldn't make a move in the second half, though,
and had trouble shooting. Alta also finished 0-5 from the
free-throw line.

Weber's key moment: Weber gained momentum early and had
the lead most of the game. The Warriors outrebounded Alta and
hit the big shots when it needed. Weber held on to the ball for over
a minute before Fuller was fouled with less than 10 seconds left.

Statistical notes: There were few fouls called in this game. Weber
was just 3-5 from the free-throw line. Only five players scored for
Alta. Ammon Olsen led with nine points.

What we learned from this game: Alta didn't come ready to play,
and may have been overconfident. The state tourney is whole
different animal and teams need a good start.

Next: Alta finished the season 16-6 as all four Region 2 teams
lost in the first round. Weber advanced to play
Bingham.

Feb. 24 - Alta 54, Jordan 35

Story of the game: Jordy Brown and Nate Nielsen scored 13
points apiece as Alta took the lead at the beginning and beat
Jordan to win the Region 2 title.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks jumped on Jordan early,
implementing a zone defense that frustrated the visitors and that
allowed Alta to claim a 14-3 first-quarter lead. When the
Beetdiggers rallied, Alta put the game away with a 15-0 run to start
the fourth quarter.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers rallied and eventually
cut the margin to 36-31 near the end of the third quarter, but ran
out of energy. Jordan Bernardo had 12 points for Jordan and
Colton Burgon had 11.

Statistical notes: Alta hit 10-11 free throws in the fourth quarter
and finished 12-14 from the line for the game. Ammon Olsen
injured his ankle and played sparingly. He finished with two points.

What we learned from this game: Alta just needed to win one of
its final two games to capture the region, and the Hawks did it.
They earned a No. 1 seed in the upcoming 5A state tournament.

Next: Alta advances to play Weber in the state tourney March 2.
Jordan will play powerhouse Lone Peak the same day.

Feb. 20 - Skyline 55, Alta 52 (OT)

Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh scored 19 points and Kevin
Wagstaff had 13, including five key free throws in overtime, as
Skyline edged Alta and prevented the Hawks from clinching first
place in Region 2.

Alta's best moment: Nate Nielsen scored a season-high 23
points. He led the Hawks with a flurry of baskets during a 12-0 run
in the second quarter that resulted in a 10- point halftime lead.
Ammon Olsen added 11 points.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles rallied in the second half and
they did it with defense, holding Alta to two points in the third
quarter and nine during the entire second half. Wagstaff hit two
free throws to tie the game with 1:16 left in regulation, and they
took the lead in OT.

Statistical notes: Skyline was 10-14 from the free-throw line in
OT. Skyline swept the season series with Alta. Osterloh had five
three-pointers, including four in a row in the first quarter.

What we learned from this game: The loss threw the Region 2
standings into a potential farce. If Alta wins its final game, it still
can capture first place. Otherwise, there could be a four-way tie
and a series of coin flips to determine 5A state tournament seeds.

Next: Alta plays host to Jordan in its regular-season finale Feb.
24.
Skyline takes on Hillcrest at home.

Feb. 13 - Alta 44, Hillcrest 31

Story of the game: Nate Nielsen scored 11 points and Ammon
Olsen and Jed DeLeeuw added 10 each as Alta out-defensed
Hillcrest and ended the Huskies' chances of post-season play.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led 23-20 at halftime, but limited
Hillcrest to three points in the third quarter and blew the game
open. Alta didn't shoot free throws well, but still held its lead late in
the game.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies played their game in the
first half, and had Alta worried. Kyle Maughan led Hillcrest with
nine points, and the Huskies even managed a couple of
three-pointers.

Statistical notes: Alta was 8-16 from the free-throw line; Hillcrest
was 11-19. Jordy Brown added eight points for Alta, which swept
the season series.

What we learned from this game: Alta is in first place, and has a
two-game lead. The only team that worries the Hawks is Skyline.
Alta's last two games are at home.

Next: Alta plays host to Skyline on Feb. 20. Hillcrest takes on
Brighton at home.

Feb. 10 - Alta 43, Brighton 42

Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 11 points and Nate
Nielsen had 10 as Alta held off Brighton in a key Region 2 game,
despite a poor night at the free-throw line.

Alta's best moment: Alta held a slight lead most of the second
half, but couldn't extend it due to its free-throw woes, going 4-15
and missing three straight 1-and-1s in the final minutes. Still, the
defense played well and held Brighton to a season low.

Brighton's best moment: Brighton led 11-8 after the first quarter
and extended it to 18-12 following a Wunderli layup and a
three-pointer by Derek Newell. The Bengals had a chance to win,
but Moses Lotulelei's half-court missed at the buzzer.

Statistical notes: Alta won the season series, capturing both
games by one point. Brighton was 2-7 from the free-throw line.
Alta is 6-1 in games decided by five points or less.

What we learned from this game: The Hawks are in sole
possesion of first place and, since they own the tiebreaker with
Brighton, basically have a two-game lead with three to play.

Next: Alta plays at Hillcrest on Feb. 13. Brighton travels to Jordan
the same night.

Feb. 6 - Alta 56, Taylorsville 51

Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 18 points, and led Alta's
outside-shooting success, as the Hawks recorded their second
straight five-point win - this time over Taylorsville - and stayed in
first place in Region 2.

Alta's best moment: Taylorsville led most of the first half, but the
Hawks tied the game at halftime. Their defense kicked in the third
quarter and that made the difference. Nate Nielsen had 10 points
for Alta.

Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors put together an 18-12
first-quarter advantage as Daren Oakeson and Stevie McCloyn
had the hot hands. They also stayed close at the end, but couldn't
cut into the margin.

Statistical notes: Oakeson had 16 points for Taylorsville; McCloyn
had 15. Alta had five three-pointers, while Taylorsville had just
one. Ironically, it was also Taylorsville's second straight five-point
loss.

What we learned from this game: The Hawks are tied for first
place and will settle it at Brighton Feb. 10. Region 2 has been
pretty competitive this season.

Next: Alta travels to Brighton on Feb. 10. Taylorsville has Hillcrest
at home the same night.

Feb. 3 - Alta 58, Jordan 53

Story of the game: Jed DeLeeuw scored 16 points, but it was
Javon Goodman who took over the offense in the fourth quarter as
Alta rallied to beat rival Jordan in a Region 2 game.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks trailed 41-39 entering the final
period, but Goodman scored six points as Alta took the lead and
hit enough free throws to hold on to it. Jordy Brown added 11
points.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers were at home and -
once again - had a lot of fan support and a great home-court
advantage. Jordan took an 18-14 lead and actually was ahead
most of the game. Jordan Bernardo led with 15 points.

Statistical notes: Alta was 10-14 from the free-throw line, while
Jordan was only 9-18. Alta had four three-pointers; Curt Follett had
both of Jordan's treys.

What we learned from this game: Alta moved to 4-1 in region and
is still tied for first place. This was a good road win. However, last
year Alta won at Jordan and the Diggers returned the favor at Alta.

Next: Alta plays host to Taylorsville on Feb. 6. Jordan goes to
Hillcrest the same night.

Jan. 30 - Skyline 58, Alta 42

Story of the game: Kevin Wagstaff scored 18 points and Ryan
Osterloh added 15, but it was Skyline's defense that held Alta
scoreless in the first quarter and the Eagles earned the much-
needed win.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks didn't play with the same
intensity early in the game as their opponent. They scored 24 of
their 42 points in the fourth period. Jordy Brown had 14 points and
Ammon Olse nadded 12.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led 11-0 after the first period,
and hit enough of their free throws late in the game to keep a good
margin, despite a spirited Alta rally. Casey Taylor added 14 points.

Statistical notes: Alta was 0-7 from the field in the first quarter,
and committed six turnovers. Skyline shot 60 percent (18-30) for
the game, while Alta was at 34 percent (13-38).

What we learned from this game: The Hawks hadn't played in a
week and perhaps they were rusty? They made a nice rally at the
end, but missed a great opportunity. The region is now up for
grabs.

Next: Alta goes to Jordan on Feb. 3. Skyline plays at Hillcrest the
same night.

Jan. 23 - Alta 35, Hillcrest 33

Story of the game: Jed DeLeeuw led the way with 12 points as
Alta hung on to beat Hillcrest and stay in first place in Region 2.

Alta's best moment: Playing at Hillcrest's pace, the Hawks took a
22-13 lead into halftime, but had to withstand the Huskies' rally.
Ammon Olsen and Jordy Brown added eight points apiece.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies made a nice rally to make
this an exciting game in the final minutes. The defense had its
best game of the season. Kyle Maughan led Hillcrest with 14
points.

Statistical notes: Alta was just 6-12 from the free-throw line;
Hillcrest was 10-16. In Hillcrest's two best defensive efforts, it
hasn't won either. Hillcrest outscored Alta 20-13 in the second half.

What we learned from this game: Coming off an exciting win
against Brighton, and with Skyline next, the Hawks hung on. It
shows you can't look past any region team.

Next: Alta travels to Skyline Jan. 30. Hillcrest goes to Brighton the
same night.

Jan. 20 - Alta 54, Brighton 53

Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 19 points and Nate
Nielsen had 16, including the winning three- pointer with 1.6
seconds left, as Alta hung to beat rival Brighton in a Region 2
game.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led most of the game, jumping to
a 20-9 advantage in the first quarter. Alta maintained that lead until
late in the game. Jed DeLeeuw added 11 for Alta.

Brighton's best moment: Playing without injured leading scorer
Corbin Miller, the Bengals used the scoring of Sam Wunderli, who
had 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, to rally and even take
the lead with 1:42 left.

Statistical notes: Brighton was 13-19 from the free-throw line. Alta
was 2-2. Xan Ricketts had nine points for Brighton.

What we learned from this game: Alta moved to 2-0 in Region 2
play and is in sole possession of first place.

host to
Jordan the same night.

Jan. 16 - Alta 55, Taylorsville 44

Story of the game: Jed DeLeeuw scored 16 points and Ammon
Olsen had 12 as Alta pulled away from Taylorsville in the second
quarter and opened the Region 2 season with a win.

Alta's best moment: Alta led 19-15 after one quarter, then
outscored Taylorsville 21-7 in the second period to earn an
18-point halftime lead. The Hawks coasted after that, hitting 13-16
free throws to prevent a comeback.

Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors played OK in the first
quarter, and fans hoped this might end their three-week swoon.
Jordan Edgington had 16 points and Stevie McCloyn 13.

Statistical notes: The Hawks had four three-pointers, led by
Deleeuw with a pair. Taylorsville hit 11-14 free throws, so both
teams shot well from the line. This was DeLeeuw's second
nice-scoring game in the last three. He has become a nice
scoring threat.

What we learned from this game: Alta opens region with a win
and, since Taylorsville is no longer showing signs of being a
threat, it appears the league title will be between Alta, Skyline,
Jordan and perhaps Brighton.

Next: Alta plays Brighton at home Jan. 20. Taylorsville travels to
Hillcrest.

Jan. 9 - Bingham 52, Alta 44 (OT)

Story of the game: Jake Krahenbuhl scored 12 points, but it was
Bingham's defense that made the difference, holding Alta
scoreless in the five-minute overtime session and claiming the
non-region victory.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks had balanced scoring and
stayed with Bingham to the end. Jordy Brown finished with 11
points and Ammon Olsen had 10.

Bingham's best moment: The game was close throughout, but
the Miners pulled away in overtime. It was 44-all at the end of
regulation, but Alta couldn't score in the extra session. Ben Clifford
finished with 10 points, and Nate Girsberger and Shad
Sommerville had nine.

Statistical notes: Bingham was 14-20 from the free-throw line,
while Alta was 5-9.

What we learned from this game: Maybe there were a few
Bingham athletes who got some revenge after losing the 5A state
football championship to Alta. Like football, this was a great game
that went down to the end.

Next: Alta opens Region 2 play at Taylorsville Jan. 16. Bingham
has a home game against
Skyline Jan. 13.

Jan. 7 - Alta 54, American Fork 43

Story of the game: Jed DeLeeuw scored a season-high 17 points
as Alta pulled away from American Fork in the second quarter and
scored a methodical non-region victory.

Alta's best moment: The game was tied 7-7 after the first quarter,
but Alta pulled away in the second period by outscoring the
Cavemen 16-9. That was enough because the lead forced AF to
foul late and Alta hit its free throws to claim the win. Nate Nielsen
added 13 points.

American Fork's best moment: The Cavemen are winless, but
they played well most of the game and stayed with Alta. Tanner
LeBaron led AF with 12 points, while Ryker Mathews had 10.

Statistical notes: Alta had a big advantage at the free-throw line,
but hit only 11-27 free throws (41%). LeBaron had three treys for
AF, while DeLeewu led Alta with two.

What we learned from this game: This should have been a rout
for Alta, but American Fork stayed in the game. It still got Alta back
on the winning track. Only time will tell if this game prepared Alta
for their next game.

Next: Alta travels to play Bingham Jan. 9. American Fork starts
Region 4 play at
Lehi Jan. 14.

Jan. 6 - Pleasant Grove 74, Alta 59

Story of the game: C.J. Wilcox had a season-high 39 points and
the Pleasant Grove defense clamped down on Alta in the second
quarter as the Vikings rolled to the non-region win.

Alta's best moment: After being held to 17 first-half points (only
six in the second quarter), Alta had 42 points in the second half.
Nate Nielson had 15 points and Jordy Brown 13.

Pleasant Grove's best moment: Wilcox was on fire from the start,
and the Vikings took control by outscoring Alta 22-6 in the second
quarter. Wilcox scored from everywhere. He had five three-pointers.

Statistical notes: The 74 points was the most Alta has given up
this season. Turnover statistics were not available, but the Hawks
had several in the second quarter. Alta was 18-27 from the
free-throw line; PG was 19-31.

What we learned from this game: This was a "trap" game
because the Hawks were feeling good about themselves after the
Texas road trip, and have rival Bingham approaching. Wilcox is
all-state potential.

Next: Alta plays host to American Fork tonight (Jan. 7). Pleasant
Grove opens Region 4 play Jan. 14 against Timpanogos.

Dec. 31 - Alta 65, Bastrop, Texas 58

Story of the game: Javon Goodman scored 14 points and Alta put
forth a fine defensive effort, holding off Bastrop, Texas, in the
second game of its Texas road trip.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks grabbed a big lead in the first
half and then, for the second straight night, had to withstand a
comeback attempt. Alta led 54-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Bastrop's best moment: Guard E.J. Fleming provided a lot of
fireworks, scoring 30 points and leading Bastrop's fourth quarter
rally, where they outscored Alta 28-11. Josiah Monroe had 12.

Statistical notes: Nate Nielsen and Jed Deleeuw had 10 points
each for Alta. Jordan Black and Jordy Brown had nine apiece.

What we learned from this game: Bastrop was not among the
better teams from Texas, but the Hawks still learned how to
protect a lead.

Next: Alta returns to Utah and plays at Pleasant Grove Jan. 6.

Dec. 30 - Alta 70, Wagner, Texas 66

Story of the game: Jordy Brown had a season-high 23 points and
Nate Niilsen added 17 as Alta built a big lead and then held off a
late rally by the home team.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks outscored Wagner 21-8 in the
second quarter and claimed a 38-20 halftime advantage.
Wagner's comeback didn't begin until the fourth quarter. Ammon
Olsen had nine points for Alta.

Wagner's best moment: The Thunderbirds outscored Alta 27-15
in the final quarter, thanks mostly to a flurry of three-point baskets.
Wagner had 10 treys in the game. Eddie Ortiz and Jordan
Clarkson led the team in scoring with 14 points apiece.

Statistical notes: Alta had a big advantage in the foul differential,
but didn't help itself by shooting 14-26 from the free-throw line. By
comparison, Wagner was 8-9.

What we learned from this game: This was a the first game of a
Texas road trip for the Hawks. Wagner, which is from the San
Antonio area, dropped to 13-5 overall.

Dec. 22 - Alta 51, Weber 40

Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 17 points and the
Hawks played another crisp game, handing Weber a non-region
loss on the Warriors' home floor.

Alta's best moment: The last few minutes of the game, the
Hawks went to the free-throw line. Alta finished the game 17-20
from the line, so Weber was unable to manage a late rally.

Weber's best moment: Weber was in the game, and actually led
for most of the first three quarters. It was 23-22 at halftime. Guard
Ryan Graves led Weber with 14 points.

Statistical notes: This game was a free-throw fest, as both teams
made more charity shots and actual baskets. Javon Goodman
backed up Olsen with 10 points. Graves had four treys for the
Warriors.

What we learned from this game: Alta is playing good,
fundamental basketball. Olsen is emerging as the scoring leader.
What happened to Jordy Brown? He managed just two points in
this game.

Next: Alta is off for Christmas, then heads to Texas to play a
couple of games. Weber opens Region 1 play at Syracuse Jan. 9.

Dec. 19 - Alta 65, Viewmont 49

Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 20 points as Alta broke
open a close game in the second quarter and rolled to a
non-region victory over Viewmont.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks outscored Viewmont 15-4 in the
second quarter, which turned a 15-11 lead to 29-15. Nate Nielsen
had 13 for Alta.

Viewmont's best moment: The Vikings rallied with 25 points in
the fourth quarter, but Alta kept the lead in double digits the entire
time. Kyle DeHart led Viewmont's balanced attack with 10 points.

Statistical notes: Alta made 12-14 free throws. The Hawks shot
well, and played a clean game - their second straight. Nielsen had
Alta's only three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: This was Alta's second straight
impressive home win. The Hawks are playing good basketball in
only their fifth game of the season.

Next: Alta travels to play Weber on Monday (Dec. 22). Viewmont
goes to Bountiful on Jan. 2.

Dec. 17 - Alta 69, Olympus 61

Story of the game: Ammon Olsen led five players that scored in
double figures as Alta blew out to a 23-point lead at one point
before holding off Olympus in a non-region game.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks were great in the first half,
dominating the visitors in virtually all parts of the game. At halftime,
it was 40-21 and the lead grew in the third quarter before Oly
began to rally.

Oly's best moment: The Titans cut the lead late in the third quarter
and then made a slight run at Alta in the fourth. Corbin Green led
with 17 points, followed by Joe Bourne and Connor Brady with 11
each.

Statistical notes: Olympus was 17-18 from the free-throw line.
Alta's 69 points was a season high - by far. So far, their two home
wins have been comfortable.

What we learned from this game: Alta keeps improving. Their
starting five played well tonight. Coach Barker wanted to remind
everyone that a lot of his players were still playing football three
weeks ago.

Next: Alta goes to Weber on Dec. 22. Olympus has its first home
game of the season against
Skyline Friday (Dec. 19).

Dec. 16 - Lone Peak 53, Alta 48

Story of the game: Tyler Haws scored 19 of his 23 points in the
second half as Lone Peak held off Alta in a non-region game.

Alta's best moment: This was a breakout game for Jordy Brown,
who scored 18 points for the Hawks. Alta was in this game all the
way to the end. And, unlike the last game, the team played much
cleaner and made fewer mistakes.

Lone Peak's best moment: Haws is an all-state player and takes
control in each game. What might have won this game for Lone
Peak is the fact it made 17-18 free throws.

Statistical notes: Alta made 8-14 free throws. Big difference right
there. Nate Nielsen added 12 points for the Hawks, who lost their
first game. Haws averages 24.8 points per game.

What we learned from this game: No loss is good, but this
wasn't bad. Lone Peak will be in the 5A state tournament, and the
Hawks lost by five on their opponent's home floor. Lone Peak will
need scoring from other players if it's going to win the title this year.

Next: Alta comes home to play Olympus tonight (Dec. 17). Lone
Peak takes on
Juan Diego at home Friday (Dec. 19).

Dec. 12 - Alta 34, Davis 25

Story of the game: Nate Nielsen scored 12 points as Alta
captured its home opener for Davis in what coach Jim Barker said
was just the opposite of the team's first game.

Alta's best moment: Overall, the game was ugly. Defense ruled
and was helped by a lot of offensive mistakes by both teams. Alta
led 10-7 at halftime. Jordan Brown and Ammon Olsen led the way.
Brown hit four straight free throws, and he and Olsen had several
steals.

Davis' best moment: James Cowser led Davis with eight points,
while Jordan Welk had six. Davis started slowly, but still managed
to stay in the game. The Darts fell to 1-2.

Statistical notes: Alta had a big advantage at the free-throw line,
convering 16-27, although it missed seven straight at one point in
the fourth quarter. Nielsen was the Hawks' outside threat, nailing
two treys.

What we learned from this game: Alta is 2-0 and managed to win
a game that it may not have deserved. The team has a ways to go,
and will need to improve dramatically to beat Lone Peak.

Next: The Hawks travel to 4A power Lone Peak on Tuesday (Dec.
16). Davis goes to
Bingham the same night.

Dec. 9 - Alta 52, Spanish Fork 48

Story of the game: Javon Goodman scored 18 points and Ammon
Olsen added 13 as Alta rallied in the second half to edge Spanish
Fork and claim a victory in its season opener.

Alta's best moment: This game was close all the way. The
Hawks trailed 29-27 at halftime, but had an offensive third quarter
to take the lead, and then played defense down the stretch.

Spanish Fork's best moment: The Dons had a big advantage,
playing their fourth game. Spanish Fork claimed the early lead, but
couldn't hang on to it. Taylor Jones had 12 points and Breck Lewis
10 for the Dons.

Statistical notes: A great game. Spanish Fork hit 9-13 free throws,
compared to 12-21 for Alta.

What we learned from this game: It looks like Olsen will play a
big role on the basketball team, just like he did in football.
Opponents will recognize that, so Alta needs others to step up.

Next: Alta has its home opener Friday against Davis. Spanish
Fork plays host to 4A power Provo the same night.
