Nov. 13 - Bingham 28, Alta 19
Story of the game - RB Harvey Langi led a balanced attack, and
the Bingham defense dominated the line of scrimmage, but it still
took a couple of trick plays for the Miners to hold off Alta and
advance to the 5A championship game.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks couldn't maintain a running
game, but QB Jordan Brown put on his best show, passing for 341
yards and three scores. Alta also had no turnovers, but missed a
couple of key FG's early and then had to play catch up in the
second half.
Bingham's best moment - The Miners had been preparing for this
game since last year's contest (a 21-19 Alta victory) ended. They
had several big plays, including a fake punt, a Tim Tebow-type
pass for a score and a long Langi run that put the game out of
reach. Bingham's defense won the game, though.
What we learned from this game - Most folks will look at this as
the 5A championship between the two best teams. Alta and
Bingham treated fans to another great game, with several highs
and lows.
Next - Alta ended its season with a 10-3 record. Bingham
advanced to play Davis in the 5A title contest.

Nov. 6 - Alta 37, Cottonwood 13
Story of the game - Quarterback Jordan Brown Brown passed for
424 yards, including 16 straight completions at one point, and the
Hawks broke away with a big third quarter to advance to the 5A
state football semifinals at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Alta's best moment - Leading 16-6 at halftime, Alta scored three
straight touchdowns in the third quarter. The big play was a
70-yard TD pass from Brown to Tyron Morris on a broken play.
Brown consistently found his receivers open in Cottonwood's
secondary.
Cottonwood's best moment - With the exception of one turnover,
the Colts played a great first quarter, which ended tied 3-3. QB
Crosby Jensen found WR Tim Glenn open, and RB Nadan Hosea
gained most of his yardage.
What we learned from this game - The Hawks dominated, thanks
for their receivers. Morris caught three passes for 166 yards, Zach
Liston was 8-173 and Skyler Mayne 8-80. The defense held
Cottonwood in check.
Next - Alta advances to play Bingham in one 5A semifinal.
Cottonwood finished with an 8-4 record.

Oct. 30 - Alta 38, Fremont 14
Story of the game - Taylor Eyring led Alta's potent rushing attack
with 99 yards, and the Hawks defense came alive to stuff Fremont
in the second half en route to a decisive first-round win in the 5A
playoffs.
Alta's best moment - Trailing 14-12, QB Jordan Brown led Alta on
late scoring drive in the second quarter to give the Hawks the lead
at halftime. Alta dominated after that. The defense held Fremont to
minus (-41) yards rushing and that decided the game.
Fremont's best moment - QB Brody Garr threw a couple of TD
passes, including one on a fake field goal, as Fremont put a scare
into Alta through most of the first half. Garr threw for 216 yards, but
that was the team's only offense.
What we learned from this game - Alta simply controlled the line
of scrimmage, on offense and defense, and wore down Fremont in
the second half. Still, it was a good game for a while.
Next - Alta advances to play host to Cottonwood next week in the
5A quarterfinals. Fremont finished the season with a 6-5 record.

Oct. 23 - Alta 23, Pleasant Grove 20 (OT)
Story of the game - Vance Bingham booted a 37-yard field in the
final seconds of regulation, and then nailed a 40-yarder in overtime
as Alta edged Pleasant Grove and earned the top seed from
Region 4 in the upcoming 5A playoffs.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks trailed most of the game, but at
least QB Jordan Brown was on the field again and they stayed
close until Bingham was ready. With the win, Alta earned its fifth
straight region title.
PG's best moment - Reserve QB Donny Lewis had a nice game,
and gave his team a chance to win. PG got the ball first in overtime,
but its field goal attempt was blocked by Alta's Brayden Payne.
What we learned from this game - Alta's big players came
through. Alta trailed 20-10 in the fourth quarter, but Brown led a
couple of drives with pinpoint passing, and that proved to be
enough to earn the win.
Next - Alta advances to the 5A playoffs and will play host to Weber.
Pleasant Grove travels to Riverton.

photographers there. To read the Deseret News story, click here.

Oct. 16 - Alta 49, Hillcrest 7
Story of the game - Boston Handley had another nice game,
throwing for two touchdowns and running for another, and Zack
Eyring anchored Alta's rushing attack, as the Hawks had no trouble
beating Hillcrest in a Region 4 game.
Alta's best moment - This game was never in doubt. The Hawks
led 42-0 at halftime. This was probably Handley's last game as the
starter, as QB Jordan Brown is likely to return for next week's big
game at Pleasant Grove that will decide the Region 4 crown.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies were overmatched, and
knew that going into the game. They had just four first downs and
38 yards of offense. Bridger Dallimore scored the team's
touchdown.
What we learned from this game - This was one of those "name
the score" type games. There was little chance of an upset, even if
Alta might have been looking forward to next week. Handley
appears to be the guy who will take over Alta's QB duties next year
as a senior. The only bad news is Parker Hausknecht was injured,
and that will hurt.
Next - Alta plays at Pleasant Grove. Hillcrest ends its season at
home against American Fork.
Links - There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Oct. 9 - Alta 37, American Fork 21
Story of the game - Boston Handley had another big night,
throwing for 249 yards and four touchdowns, as Alta went to
American Fork had no trouble earning the Region 4 win.
Alta's best moment - Hanley had three scoring passes in the first
half, and his fourth TD throw gave Alta a 37-6 lead. Skyler Mayne
was his favorite receiver, with five catches for 121 yards.
American Fork's best moment - The Cavemen rallied behind
Cade Zarbock's two fourth-quarter scores to make the game
appear respectable. Zarbock scored on a fumble return, then
caught a 61-yard TD pass from QB Chase Hansen.
What we learned from this game - Alta is in position to still win
the Region 4 title, which will likely be decided in the game Oct. 23
at Pleasant Grove. The question is will Jordan Brown be back?
Does Alta really need him?
Next - Alta plays Hillcrest at home. American Fork takes on
Brighton.

Sept. 30 - Alta 47, Riverton 7
Story of the game - QB Boston Handley, starting in place of the
injured Jordan Brown, threw four touchdown passes and Alta's
defense held Riverton in check en route to a decisive non-region
victory.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks dominated in all facets of the
game. Besides Handley's big game, Alta's Parker Hausknecht
returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown, and the team also
recorded a safety.
Riverton's best moment - With the usually-potent offense unable
to help, Conner Evans returned a kickoff 95 yards for Riverton's
only score. Cole Osborne had 13 tackles for the defense.
What we learned from this game - If Riverton is the second-best
team in Region 3, there might be a real talent disparity. Alta coach
Les Hamilton didn't know which QB to start, but Handley was the
big winner. Brown has a separated shoulder. No word when he
will return.
Next - Alta gets back to Region 4 play at American Fork. Riverton
takes on Taylorsville.
Links - The Deseret News had a reporter at the game. To read the
D-News story, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Sept. 25 - Alta 23, Lone Peak 7
Story of the game - Jordan Brown passed for 237 yards, before
leaving the game with an injury, and the defense played probably
its most impressive game of the season as Alta bounced back
from last week's loss to beat Lone Peak.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks dominated from the start, forcing
a fumble on Lone Peak's first play, and then Brown hit Zach Liston
on a 31-yard scoring pass to take the lead. Alta never trailed, and
Lone Peak never scored until the final play of the game.
Lone Peak's best moment - The Knights avoided the shutout
when QB Tannon Pedersen hit Chase Lindsley on a 10-yard TD
pass. Lone Peak's defense did not allow a point in the second half.
What we learned from this game - Alta is back in the Region 4
hunt, and dropped Lone Peak out of first place. The rest of the
region appreciated that, too. Alta's defense really made a
statement. The only bad point was too many penalties.
Next - Alta travels to Riverton in a non-region game. Lone Peak
plays host to American Fork.

game, and the D-News sent a photographer. To read the D-News

Sept. 18 - Brighton 21, Alta 10
Story of the game - RB Sosake Takai ran for 160 yards and
Brighton's defense forced three turnovers, and stopped the Hawks
twice on fourth down, en route to a Region 4 win that ended a
five-game losing streak in the series.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks moved the football, especially in
the first half, but hurt themselves with a pair of fumbles. Going
against the wind in the second quarter, QB Jordan Brown hit Zach
Liston on a 35-yard touchdown pass that cut the margin to 14-10.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals' defense, led by Ricky
Heimuli, was on the field a lot in the second half, and came up with
stops every time. Soph QB Andy Jones scored on an 8-yard keeper
to give Brighton a 21-10 lead, and the offense held on to the ball
the last six minutes of the game.
What we learned from this game - This region is tough, and
showed that any team can be beaten. Alta's running game was not
a factor on this night, and Brown was the team's only offensive
threat.
Next - Alta is 1-1 in region and returns home to play Lone Peak.
Brighton is off.

I was there, too. To read the Deseret News story, click here. To

Sept. 11 - Alta 48, Jordan 20
Story of the game - Alta QB Jordan Brown had a field day against
Jordan's defense, throwing for almost 400 yards and leading the
Hawks to 620 yards of offense in a convincing Region 4 victory.
Alta's best moment - After giving up a first-quarter TD, Alta scored
27 straight points and that eliminated Jordan's running attack.
Brown was able to throw for big yards, and averaged over 20 yards
per completion.
Jordan's best moment - QB Alex Hart had a big game, but he had
to throw short. WR Braden Hammond set a state record with 20
receptions for 175 yards, and all three of Jordan's TDs.
What we learned from this game - The Hawks have developed a
habit of beating Jordan, but this game was a rout compared to last
year's 38-36 nail-biter. Alta simply had no trouble moving the ball
against Jordan's defense.
Next - Alta improved to 1-0 in region and plays at Brighton next.
Jordan has its homecoming game against American Fork.

Deseret News article, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
brief, click here.
Sept. 4 - Alta 31, Timpview 15
Story of the game - Jordan Brown passed for two touchdowns,
and ran for another, and the Alta defense came through with
several big plays as Alta beat Timpview in this much-hyped contest
between last year's 5A and 4A champions.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks put this game away in the
second quarter. Brown had both of his scoring tosses during this
time, and Parker Hausknecht and Nik Wolford helped stop
Timpview's drives. Those were important as Alta was able to score
each time it got the ball in the opening half.
Timpview's best moment - The Thunderbirds' highlights came at
the start and end of the game. QB Trevor Brown engineered a
six-minute TD drive to give Timpview the initial lead. Later, Ofa Latu
intercepted a Brown pass to set up the team's other score.
What we learned from this game - This is Timpview's second last
(both to 5A teams), so maybe the T-Birds aren't the same team
they have been. It was a good win for Alta, which played the most
difficult schedule it could to prepare for the rest of the season.
Next - The fun doesn't stop for the Hawks, who play rival Jordan to
open Region 4 play. Timpview also starts region action at
Mountain View.

Aug. 28 - Bingham 38, Alta 34
Story of the game - RB Harvey Langi put on a show, running for
189 yards, and adding 116 receiving, as Bingham did want it
hadn't been able to do in past games with Alta - rally. The Miners
ended a three-game losing streak to the Hawks by outscoring
them 24-7 in the second half to earn the win.
Alta's best moment - Hawks QB Jordan Brown was unstoppable
in the first half. He had 279 yards passing before halftime, and
Austin Lee's 40-yard interception return gave Alta a 28-14 lead at
intermission.
Bingham's best moment - The Miners gained momentum in the
second half and, when Langi scored on a 24-yard run to tie the
game in the fourth quarter, Bingham was on a roll. The Miners led
38-27 until Alta scored on a long pass late in the game.
What we learned from this game - This isn't a bad loss for Alta
because it's likely just a tuneup for the 5A state playoffs. If there is
a concern, it's the defense, which should be good enough to avoid
having to get into shootouts with opponents.
Next - Alta plays in another big game - against Timpview. Bingham
travels to Texas to play national power Trinity.

Aug. 21 - Alta 59, Cottonwood 20
Story of the game - Jordan Brown threw for 200 yards and two
touchdowns, and the Alta running game showed it was alive and
well as the Hawks welcomed Cottonwood to Utah's 5A ranks with
a decisive thrashing on their home field.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks' line dominated on both sides of
the ball. Brown ran for 57 on the game's first play and Alta led 14-0
just minutes into the game. RB Bryan Finnerty ran for 107 yards on
16 carries, and Alta also intercepted a pass for a score.
Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts were confident, but
overmatched. QB Crosby Jensen threw a couple of TD passes,
and Cottonwood closed the margin to 24-14 early in the third
quarter, but that was as close as it could get.
What we learned from this game - Once again, Alta seems
loaded. Where do they get their players? Krypton? Brown did a nice
job, but Alta has talent everywhere. Alta is No. 1 until someone
knocks them off.
Next - Alta travels to play rival Bingham in another great 5A
matchup. Cottonwood returns home to play Sky View.
