Feb. 23 - American Fork 67, Alta 52

Story of the game: Hayley Holmstead scored 23 points and Heather
Mansfield added 16 as top-ranked American Fork survived a scare
from Alta and advanced in the first round of the 5A state tournament.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks used their strong outside shooting
to stay with American Fork through the first half. McKenzie Morrison
led Alta with 15 points and Camilla Rueda had 12, but Becca
Beaudoin added 10 (two three-pointers) and Erin Foster had nine
(three treys).

American Fork's best moment: The Cavemen pulled away in the
third quarter, taking a 46-38 lead by the end of the period. AF had
trouble with their free-throw shooting, so also let Alta stay in the
game until late.

Statistical notes: Alta hit 12-15 free throws, while American Fork was
just 15-29. This was Alta's first game against a Utah County team
this season. The 67 points given up was the most since before
Christmas.

What we learned from this game: Alta finished the season with a
10-12 record, but it was marked improvement from last year. It
appears Region 2 suffered a "down" year as all four teams were
eliminated in the opening round.

Next: Alta is done for the season. American Fork advanced to play
Kearns.

Feb. 18 - Skyline 54, Alta 50

Story of the game: Hannah Bezdjian scored 17 points and pulled
down seven rebounds, including a couple late in the game that
resulted in key points, as Skyline held off Alta and claimed a No. 3
seed in the upcoming 5A state tournament.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks battled back from an early deficit.
Alta scored 26 points in the fourth quarter, and came within 52-50 on
baskets by Hayli Shurtz, Caitlin Arnett, Stephanie Stohel and Erin
Foster. McKenzie Morrison and Foster

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led the entire game, jumping to
a 14-2 first-quarter lead. Bezdjian had the big plays at the end,
grabbing offensive rebounds that kept Skyline ahead. Otherwise, the
game could have gone either way.

Statistical notes: Foster had three treys for Skyline, and Shurtz had
two. The Hawks hit 10-16 free throws, while Skyline was 7-15 - on its
home floor.

What we learned from this game: Skyline swept the season series
and earned the better seed in the 5A state tournament. The Hawks
fell to 10-11 with the loss.

Next: Both Alta and Skyline advance to the state tourney, which
begins Feb. 23 at Salt Lake Community College.

Feb. 13 - Alta 67, Hillcrest 50

Story of the game: Becca Beaudoin scored 21 points and Alta took
advantage of a huge difference in fouls to whip Hillcrest in a Region 2
game.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led just 14-12 after the first quarter,
but put the game away with two dominating quarters. Alta outscored
Hillcrest 22-6 in the second period and just kept going, eventually
leading by 30 points. Erin Foster had 17 points and McKenzie
Morrison 16.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies put together a nice rally in the
fourth quarter, outscoring Alta's reserves 19-7 to make the score
closer than it could have been.

Statistical notes: Alta hit 23-42 free throws, while Hillcrest was 9-17.
Beaudoin had five three-pointers for the Hawks.

What we learned from this game: It was "Senior Night" at Alta, and
the Hawks ended their home season on a good note. The next game
will determine seeding.

Next: Alta finishes the regular season at Skyline Feb. 18. Hillcrest
goes to
Brighton the same night.

Feb. 11 - Brighton 44, Alta 34

Story of the game: Kim Ringwood scored 14 points as Brighton led
the entire way and went on to down Alta and clinch the Region 2
championship.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks got 13 points from Erin Foster, who
also had three of Alta's five three-point baskets. Becca Beaudoin
added seven points.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals took a 10-5 lead in the first
quarter, and never relinquished it. Alta made a run late in the game,
but Brighton hit enough of its free throws to earn the win.

Statistical notes: Brighton was 14-23 from the free-throw line; Alta
was just 5-13. Kylie Hirschi added eight points for Brighton.

What we learned from this game: This was Alta's chance to move
into a tie for first place. Now, the Hawks have to recover to try to earn
the best seed they can for state.

Next: Alta has Hillcrest at home on Feb. 13. Brighton plays host to
Jordan the same night.

Feb. 6 - Alta 49, Taylorsville 38

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 14 points and Alta was
almost automatic at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter in its
Region 2 win over Taylorsville.

Alta's best moment: The hawks led 30-24 entering the fourth
quarter. Taylorsville was forced to foul, and Alta made their shots.
The Hawks ended up 21-23 from the free-throw line.

Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors played Alta tough, but
couldn't quite catch up and suffered their second straight loss.
Whitney Mitchell scored all of her 16 points in the second half. Athena
Mauga added 13.

Statistical notes: Taylorsville was just 3-10 from the free-throw line.
Mitchell nailed four three-pointers. Alta swept both games from
Taylorsville.

What we learned from this game: The win set up a big game
against Brighton next that could decide the region title.

Next: Alta plays Brighton at home on Feb. 11. Taylorsville goes to
Hillcrest the same night.

Feb. 4 - Alta 60, Jordan 38

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 18 points and Erin
Foster had 17 as Alta broke open a close game in the fourth quarter
and beat Jordan in a Region 2 game.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led the entire game, but Jordan
rallied in the third quarter to cut the margin to 33-27. Alta then
outscored Jordan 27-11 to turn the game into a rout. Becca Beaudoin
added 14 points.

Jordan's best moment: The Diggers trailed 24-12 at halftime, but
turned it into a game with their third-quarter run. Unfortunately, they
didn't have enough gas to continue. Bree Scuderi, Amy Sorensen and
Madison Naylor each had eight points.

Statistical notes: Both teams did not shoot well from the free-throw
line. Alta was 13-25 and Jordan just 2-10. Foster had four of Alta's
seven three-point baskets.

What we learned from this game: Alta's win was not a surprise, but
Jordan played tough and the game wasn't decided until the fourth
quarter.

Next: Alta plays at Taylorsville Feb. 6. Jordan has Hillcrest at home
the same night.

Jan. 30 - Skyline 51, Alta 49

Story of the game: Miquelle Askew scored 14 points, but it was
Whitney Jenkins' two free throws with 1.5 seconds that made the
difference in Skyline's Region 2 win over Alta.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks played tough, and this game went
back-and-forth. McKenzie Morrison and Becca Beaudoin were Alta's
1-2 punch with 18 and 17 points.

Skyline's best moment: This game was close throughout and both
teams played well. Alta chose to foul someone who wasn't having a
hot night (Jenkins had just four points), but it backfired. Hannah
Bezdjian added 12 points for Skyline.

Statistical notes: Skyline hit 10-15 free throws; Alta was 18-25.
Beaudoin had three treys for Alta, and Erin Foster had two.

What we learned from this game: This is another example of how
close these teams are. The ones that win the close battles will be at
the top. Not much separates them, however.

Next: Alta plays host to Jordan on Feb. 4. Skyline returns home to
take on
Hillcrest the same night.

Jan. 23 - Alta 72, Hillcrest 46

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 25 points and Alta's
shooters poured it on from the perimeter as the Hawks whipped
Hillcrest in a Region 2 game.

Alta's best moment: While Morrison was scoring from the inside, the
Hawks nailed seven three-pointers and just kept building their lead.
Alta led by 22 going into the final quarter and Hillcrest couldn't stop it.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies had a tough time making
shots, and got a lot of their points from the free-throw line, where they
were 20-32. Lexi Amundsen was the top scorer with 18 points.

Statistical notes: The 72 points was the most Hillcrest has given up
since its season opener. Erin Foster added 11 points for Alta, while
Becca Beaudoin had 10. Hillcrest did not have a three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: The Hawks may not have a
winning overall record, but they're sitting pretty on top of the Region 2
standings. They've also beaten their closest competitors.

Next: Alta plays host to Skyline on Jan. 30. Hillcrest goes to Brighton
the same night.

Jan. 21 - Brighton 44, Alta 41

Story of the game: Kylie Hirschi scored a season-high 24 points as
Brighton took a small lead in the first half and held off Alta in a
Region 2 game.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks got their offense going in the
second half behind McKenzie Morrison, who had 22 points. Becca
Beaudoin added 10 points.

Brighton's best moment: The first half was full of defense and
Brighton had a 16-10 advantage at intermission. Katie Tominaga
added eight points.

Statistical notes: Only three players actually scored for Alta. The
Hawks outscored Brighton 31-28 in the second half. Brighton hit
14-27 free throws, while Alta was 16-21.

What we learned from this game: Brighton knocked Alta off its
first-place perch, something the boys team couldn't quite do and now
four teams are tied with 2-1 records. So far, close games have been
the norm in region play.

Next: Alta goes to Hillcrest on Jan. 23. Brighton plays at Jordan the
same night.

Jan. 16 - Alta 42, Taylorsville 39

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 13 points and Erin
Foster had 12 as Alta held off Taylorsville and moved to 2-0 in Region
2 play.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led just 9-8 after the first quarter, but
stretched it to 20-12 at halftime. Taylorsville made a nice rally late, but
Alta hit just enough free throws to hold on to the win.

Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors rally was mostly due to Siu
and Saane Lo'amanu, who led the team in scoring with 13 and 11
points.

Statistical notes: Alta hit five three-point baskets, while Taylorsville
nailed four. The Hawks were 9-14 from the free-throw line;
Taylorsville was 7-13. The 39 points given up was a season best for
Alta's defense.

What we learned from this game: There isn't much difference
between some of these teams and the ones who win the close
games will be at the top of the standings.

Next: Alta plays at Brighton on Jan. 21. Taylorsville has a home game
against
Hillcrest the same night.

perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line in overtime, to lift Alta to a
narrow overtime win over Jordan in their Region 2 opener.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks trailed most of the first half, but
rallied to tie it and send the game to overtime. Morrison's free-throw
shooting made the difference as Alta outscored Jordan 13-7 in the
extra session.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers had their outside shooting
eye as Bree Scuderi scored 24 points, including five treys, and
Luciana Soares had three baskets from long range, too.

Statistical notes: Alta was 18-26 from the free-throw line, while
Jordan was just 3-11. Amy Sorensen had 12 points for Jordan. Arnett
had 11 for Alta.

What we learned from this game: The Hawks moved to 1-0 in
region play with this narrow victory. The new season starts and Alta
can use the experience it has gained. Alta actually has fared well in
close games.

to
Hillcrest the same night.

Jan. 6 - West Jordan 47, Alta 38

Story of the game: Taylor Johnson scored 13 points and Gabriella
Rodriguez had 12 as West Jordan rallied with a big fourth quarter
and earned its first victory of the season.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led most of the game, and still had
a chance late due to West Jordan's poor free-throw shooting.
McKenzie Morrison led Alta with 14 points.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed 34-30 entering the
final quarter, but dominated with a 17-4 run. Kortni Atkinson added 10
points for West Jordan.

Statistical notes: Alta's 38-point total was a season low for West
Jordan's defense. Alta was 10-15 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was 11-23. Atkinson and Rodriguez had a pair of
three-pointers each.

What we learned from this game: This was a tough loss and it
moves Alta into Region 2 play on a downer. The good news is the
Hawks don't start with the tougher teams.

Next: Alta starts region play Jan. 14 at Jordan. West Jordan has a
home game against 5A power
Bingham.

Dec. 30 - Alta 53, Clearfield 48

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 19 points as Alta
continued its tour of Region 1 teams and won for the first time,
beating Clearfield.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks jumped ahead 17-10 after the first
quarter, but Clearfield crept back and it was close until Alta won it at
the end. Erin Foster and Arnett had 10 points apiece.

Clearfield's best moment: The Falcons rallied in the second quarter,
outscoring Alta 15-10 and making it a two-point game. Britlie
Silvester had 15 points for Clearfield, which dropped to 4-4 on the
season.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot 9-18 from the free-throw line. Alta
had four three-pointers; Clearfield had three. Foster led Alta with two
treys.

What we learned from this game: The win ended a four-game
losing streak for Alta, which was 1-3 against Region 1 schools.

Dec. 22 - Weber 73, Alta 64

Story of the game: Katie Wahlen scored 19 points and Shea
Sorenson had 17 as Weber dominated the first and third quarters
and that was enough to hand Alta its fourth straight loss.

Alta's best moment: McKenzie Morrison had 18 and Becca Boudoin
15 for the Hawks, which made good runs at Weber in the second and
fourth periods, but it was not enough.

Weber's best moment: Each team seemed to control two quarters,
but Weber was more impressive. Wahlen was Weber's outside
scoring threat with three treys. The Warriors improved to 3-4 with the
win.

Statistical notes: The Hawks had a big advantage at the free-throw
line, hitting 23-28 compared to 11-16 for Weber. Beaudoin had three
treys for Alta.

What we learned from this game: Alta has lost all three games to
Region 1 opponents, with Clearfield next. The Hawks' last win
seems like a long time ago.

Next: Alta returns home to play Clearfield Dec. 20. Weber plays host
to
Skyline the same day.

Dec. 18 - Riverton 70, Alta 35

Story of the game: Dani Lockhart scored 15 points and Bri Campbell
had 14 as Riverton blew out Alta in the first quarter and never looked
back.

Alta's best moment: Riverton led 25-5 after the first quarter and
38-18 at halftime, meaning the Hawks matched in the second
quarter. That was the only time. McKenzie Morrison had 12 points for
Alta.

Riverton's best moment: While Lockhart and Campbell were the
leading scorers, the Silverwolves had balanced scoring. Nine players
scored as they were able to empty their bench.

Statistical notes: Ashley Hildreth added 10 for Riverton, and Shelby
Ostler and Chelsea Sorenson had nine each. The 35-point win was
Riverton's biggest this year.

What we learned from this game: Alta played another member of
5A's elite - at home - and was blown out. The Hawks have a ways to
go.

Next: Alta plays at Weber on Dec. 22. Riverton returns home to take
on Bear River the next day.

Dec. 15 - Fremont 55, Alta 41

Story of the game: Ashley Russell scored 16 of her 19 points in the
second half as Fremont was able to build a lead and turn back Alta in
a non-region game.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks trailed 20-12 at halftime, but were
able to get some offense going in the second half. Trouble was, so
did Fremont. Erin Foster had a season-high 18 points.

Fremont's best moment: The first half was a game of defense, then
both teams showed their offense - and Fremont won both matches.
Hales backed up Russell with 15 points.

Statistical notes: Foster had three treys for the Hawks. Russell had
three for Fremont. The Silverwolves stayed unbeaten with the win.

What we learned from this game: Fremont is also among 5A's elite,
it seems, and Alta played a lot tougher than last time. Leading
scorers McKenzie Morrison only had five points, and Becca Boudoin
was held to three.

Next: Alta returns home to take on another 5A power - Riverton - on
Dec. 18. Fremont takes on Weber a day later.

Dec. 11 - Layton 50, Alta 49

Story of the game: Addi Moore scored 11 points and Jacqoy Lee had
10 as Layton used a second-half rally to eliminate a 10-point deficit
and beat Alta on the Hawks' home court.

Alta's best moment: Alta led 32-22 at halftime, but then had troubles
on offense in the second half. McKenzie Morrison had 17 points and
Becca Boudoin 15.

Layton's best moment: Layton was able to rally, and had six
three-point baskets from three different players. The Lancers also hit
10-12 free throws and improved to 4-1 with the win.

Statistical notes: It was Layton's second one-point win this season,
and Alta continued its trend to win one, and then lose one. The
Hawks shot a respectable 17-22 from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: The loss to Bingham showed that
Alta is not among 5A's elite, but could still earn a playoff berth. But
they need to win close games like this.

Next: Alta plays at Fremont on Dec. 16. Layton has a home game
against Bountiful the same night.

Dec. 10 - Alta 59, Copper Hills 40

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 15 points and Becca
Boudoin had 10 as Alta ran off to a big lead and claimed a
comfortable road win over Copper Hills.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks dominated the first and fourth
quarters. Alta led 19-9 after the opening period, and the lead stayed
about that much until they ran up the score in the final minutes, too.
Stohel, Erin Arnett and Rueda had eight points apiece.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies were playing "catch-up"
from the beginning, and never really threatened Alta. Copper Hills
dropped to 0-4 with the loss. Tiffany Crused led all scorers with 17
points.

Statistical notes: Both teams only hit one three-pointer apiece, and
they shot comparably well from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: Alta simply had more talent on the
basketball court than Copper Hills. There was no doubt about that
from the start.

Next: Alta returns home to take on Layton tonight (Dec. 11). Copper
Hills entertains Brighton Dec. 12.

Dec. 5 - Cottonwood 48, Alta 41

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz and Fehi Fakailoatonga scored
11 points apiece and Cottonwood continued to improve its shooting
prowess and earning its first win of the season.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led 20-17 at halftime, and kept a
narrow lead until the final quarter. Becca Baudoin led Alta with a
game-high 18 points, all of which came on three-point baskets.
McKenzie Morrison added 10.

Cottonwood's best moment: The game was always close, and the
Colts actually trailed 31-29 at the end of the third quarter. They
outscored Alta 19-10 in the final period, thanks mostly to their 19-24
shooting from the free-throw line.

Statistical notes: The shots didn't fall as well for Alta in the final
quarter. Alta was 9-17 from the line.

What we learned from this game: For Cottonwood, the Colts
showed improvement once again, and this time it resulted in a win.
Perhaps playing back-to-back games paid off.

Next: Alta goes back-to-back (at Copper Hills Dec. 10 and then a
home game against Layton a day later).
Cottonwood travels to Juan
Diego Dec. 10.

Dec. 4 - Alta 44, Snow Canyon 42

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison's basketball and free throw
late in the game spelled the difference and enabled Alta to rally for a
non-region victory over Snow Canyon.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks trailed 19-8 after the first quarter,
but slowly rallied to make it a game after halftime. Morrison finished
with 17 points to lead Alta. Becca Beaudoin added 13.

Snow Canyon's best moment: This was the Warriors' season
opener, and Taylar Barney got the team off to a great start. She
finished with 21 points.

Statistical notes: Alta rallied in the middle two quarters. There was
little scoring in the fourth period, with Alta holding a 7-5 edge. The
Hawks hurt themselves at the free throw line, where they were just
8-20.

What we learned from this game: This was a big win because it
allowed Alta to bounce back from the harrowing loss to Bingham.
Something was probaby said at halftime because it made a big
difference.

Next: Alta plays tonight (Dec. 5) at Cottonwood. Snow Canyon travels
to Springville the same night.

Dec. 2 - Bingham 86, Alta 38

Story of the game: Taeja Afalava scored 15 points and Nicole Yazzie
added 11 as Bingham jumped to a huge 32-4 first-quarter lead and
embarrassed Alta in a non-region game.

Alta's best moment: Probably when the final buzzer sounded, and
they could run into the locker room. The Hawks were even outscored
27-21 in the second half by Bingham reserves. Erin Foster led Alta
with 14 points.

Bingham's best moment: This game was over early. Thirty-two
points in a quarter will probably be a season high for any Utah team,
but the Miners had 34 against Hillcrest. This allowed the Miners to
empty their bench again. Bingham had 13 different players score.

Statistical notes: Yazzie was Bingham's outside shooting threat with
two treys. Bingham hit 15-21 free throws, while Alta was 6-12.

What we learned from this game: Bingham is a dangerous team,
and Alta has to just forget about it and regroup for the next one. The
Miners have opened the season with two huge routs on opponent's
floors. Is there a possibility of peaking too early?

Next: Alta has Snow Canyon at home on Dec. 4. Bingham takes on
Weber in its own gym the same night.

Nov. 25 - Alta 51, Olympus 49

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 15 points and helped
engineer a six-point rally in the final two minutes to lift Alta to a
non-region win over Olympus in both team's season opener.

Alta's best moment: Alta led most of the game, but let it get away in
the final quarter. Trailing 47-41 with about two minutes to play, the
Hawks roared back. It was an impressive victory for the road team.

Oly's best moment: The Titans finally pulled together in the fourth
quarter and thought they were going to get a comeback win, only to
let it slip away. Amanda Diblee led Oly with 14, while Carly Duckworth
added 11.

Statistical notes: This game was won at the free-throw line, where
Alta hit 11-13 charity shots. Oly was 14-25. Alta outscored Oly 21-11
in the second quarter and held a 31-24 halftime lead.

What we learned from this game: It was each team's first game, but
Alta had a more crisp beginning. The Hawks did the fundamentals
well.

Next: Alta travels to play 5A power Bingham on Dec. 2. Olympus has
Provo at home the same day.
