March 6 - Lone Peak 66, Bingham 46
Story of the game: Tyler Haws scored 22 points and Lone Peak went
on a 22-2 run in the first quarter and that made the difference in the
Knights 5A semifinal win over Bingham.
Bingham's key moment: The Miners rallied, and eventually closed to
within 46-34 on baskets by Ben Clifford and Remington Peck, but they
could not get closer. Clifford finished with 15 points and Peck had 11.
Lone Peak's key moment: The Knights played their best game of the
tournament and dominated every statistical category. They silenced
Bingham's fans with their early effort. Dillon Smith added 14 points
and Brandon Reeves had 13.
Statistical notes: Smith had four three-pointers for Lone Peak. He hit
three of them in the first quarter. With the exception of the opening
quarter, the teams played pretty evenly.
What we learned from this game: Bingham didn't necessarily play
badly. It was just outplayed by the defending champions.
Next: Bingham finished the season 17-7. Lone Peak advanced to play
West Jordan March 7 in the title game.

March 4 - Bingham 66, Weber 57
Story of the game: Remington Peck scored 18 points and Bingham
took advantage of its depth to hold off a Weber squad in the
quarterfinals of the 5A state tournament.
Bingham's key moment: The game was close most of the way, but
Nate Girsberger started Bingham's 25-point fourth quarter with a
basket and a layup and the Miners built a 13- point lead. Bingham hit
9-10 shots in the fourth quarter.
Weber's key moment: The Warriors stayed with Bingham with their
hot outside shooting. Weber hit 9-20 shots from three-point range, a
couple of them during a 10-0 third-quarter run that tied the game. But
Weber ran out of gas at that point. Carson Fuller had 19 points and
Ryan Graves 15.
Statistical notes: Bingham had a big advantage inside, and
outscored Weber in the key 36-14. Bingham shot 70 percent in the
second half and 56 percent for the game.
What we learned from this game: Bingham escaped Weber's upset
attempt, and learned it needs to being its "A" game each night.

game March 6. Weber finished the season 10-13.

second quarter to built a 20-point halftime lead, and then a 10-1 run to

its loss. Bingham was mong the most impressive team's in the
opening round.

and Bingham outscored Hunter by the same amount in the second
half.

Jordan for the region title, and will earn a trophy. West Jordan,
however, won the coin flip and earned the No. 1 seed in the 5A state
tournament.
Next: Bingham opens the 5A state tourney against Northridge March

quarter, and extended it to 35-13 at halftime. They let up in the third
period, but blew the game open again late. Ben Clifford added 16

from Peck. Stelter had two for Copper Hills. Bingham outscored

including 12 in the pivotal fourth quarter, as Bingham edged Riverton
and moved into first place in Region 3.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners had a narrow lead most of the
game, but lost it in the fourth period when Riverton scored seven
straight points to take a 53-48 advantage. Peck then hit a pair of
three-pointers and Bingham made 5-6 free throws down the stretch.
Riverton's best moment: Riverton never gave up and Scott Friel, Ryan
Thomas and Garrett Gundestrup silenced the home crowd as it took

bombed away from the perimeter, making a season-high 12
three-point shots, to bury rival West Jordan in a key Region 3 contest.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners got hot early, and stayed hot.
They led 37-23 at halftime, and never gave in. The outside shooting
also opened the inside and Remington Peck added 16 points and
Ben Clifford had 12.
West Jordan's best moment: Reyes Gallegos matched Bingham's
shooting, with 23 points on five three-pointers. Actually, the Jags more
than matched Bingham on the perimeter, but couldn't match them
inside when that part of the Miners' offense opened.

lead was 22 points. The Jaguars are 3-3 in their last six games.
Mason Sawyer added 13 points for West Jordan. Jordan Weirick had
nine.

surprising, but the way they did it was. It showed how impressive this
team can be when it has good perimeter shooting.

Hunter the same night.

quarter and then hit enough of their free throws late to withstand the

ahead early. The Miners have won three straight.
Next: Bingham travels to play rival West Jordan on Jan. 30. Hunter
has Copper Hills at home the same night.

Jan. 16 - Riverton 41, Bingham 36

Gunderstrup's three-point shooting and Riverton's fourth-quarter
defense that allowed the Silverwolves to win their Region 3 opener
over Bingham.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners brought plenty of fans to this
road game and seemed headed for a win. Bingham got off to a 10-2
lead, but couldn't hold it. Remington Peck had 15 for the Miners.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves trailed 31-25 entering the
fourth quarter, but their defense forced eight turnovers after that

Hunter the same night.

held on to beat Bingham in battle of 5A powers.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners rallied in the fourth quarter,
going on a 12-0 run that narrowed the gap to three - 56-53 - but it
ended there. Shad Sommerville had 14 points and Ben Clifford
10.
Skyline's best moment: Bingham missed its first nine shots and that
helped the Eagles bolt to a 17-2 first-quarterlead. Skyline still led by
as many as 20 points until late in the third period.
Statistical notes: Bingham's rally was helped by eight three-point
baskets. Skyline hit 15-21 free throws, many of those in the fourth
quarter. Kevin Wagstaff added 12 points for Skyline.
What we learned from this game: Bingham had a height advantage,
but it was neutralized by Skyline's scrappy play. The Eagles'
first-quarter lead changed the game. This is the toughest part of
Bingham's season.
Next: Bingham starts Region 3 action Friday (Jan. 16) at Riverton.

night.

Jan. 9 - Bingham 52, Alta 44 (OT)
Story of the game: Jake Krahenbuhl scored 12 points, but it was
Bingham's defense that made the difference, holding Alta scoreless
in the five-minute overtime session and claiming the non-region

with Bingham to the end. Jordy Brown finished with 11 points and
Ammon Olsen had 10.
Statistical notes: Bingham was 14-20 from the free-throw line, while

What we learned from this game: Maybe there were a few Bingham
athletes who got some revenge after losing the 5A state football
championship to Alta. Like football, this was a great game that went
down to the end.
Next: Bingham takes on Skyline at home on Jan. 13. Alta opens
Region 2 play at Taylorsville Jan. 16.

Jan. 6 - Bingham 64, Hillcrest 28
Story of the game: Ben Clifford scored 18 points, but it was
Bingham's defense that dominated play in the Miners' easy
non-region win over Hillcrest.
Bingham's best moment: Bingham held a 21-10 halftime lead, but
the Miners' offense came alive in the third quarter and that started the
blowout. Remington Peck added 12 points for Bingham.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies pride themselves on their
defense, and were still in the game at halftime. Hillcrest needs
offensive help. Jeremy Ulrich had eight points.
Statistical notes: Top scorer Kyle Maughan had just four points for
Hillcrest. Ten points in a half won't win many games. Bingham hit
15-20 free throws (75 percent). The 64 points given up was a season
high for Hillcrest.
What we learned from this game: Bingham is a good team, and the
Maxpreps tourney may have made it better. Remember, they took two
teams, so even the JV players got to play.
Next: Bingham takes on rival Alta at home Jan. 9. Hillcrest entertains
Riverton Jan. 8.

trailed 33-22 at halftime, and made a small rally in the third quarter.

playing, and gaining experience, in this tournament.

seven blocked shots as Bingham upended College Park, Texas, in
overtime on the first day of Maxpreps Holiday Classic in Torrey Pines,
Calif.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners jumped to a 21-11 lead, but
then turnovers plagued the team and they had to rally to send it to
overtime, where they outscored College Park 11-7. Remington Peck
had 17 points and Blake Krahenbuhl 13.
College Park's best moment: Adam Rowe's nine steals keyed
College Park's defense, and they got back into the game. Garrett
Constance led College Park with 17 points, including three treys.
Statistical notes: Clifford hit 10-13 free throws, and Peck was 6-6.
Krahenbuhl had three treys for the Miners.
What we learned from this game: A big win for Bingham, but it
College Park had 23 steals, so the Miners had trouble dealing with

tournament a better team. College Park is from The Woodlands,
Texas, which is north of Houston.

Dec. 16 - Davis 77, Bingham 67
Story of the game: Trevor Daniels scored 25 points as Davis blew
through Bingham's defense and handed the Miners a surprising loss
on their home floor.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners apparently weren't ready to play.
They trailed 25-15 after the first quarter, but rallied to take a two-point
lead at halftime. Ben Clifford had 15 points and Remington Peck 10,
but this wasn't Bingham at its best.
Davis' best moment: The Darts improved to 2-2 with the win. Daniels
was on fire, and he had help. Jordan Welk had 14, and James
Cowser 13. All told, there were five players in double figures. This was
a great win for Davis, and could change its season.
Statistical notes: How do you figure this? Davis was 19-28 from the
free-throw line. Bingham was 7-11. The Miners gave up 77 points,
which was by far the most they've given up in any game this season.
What we learned from this game: Bingham didn't come to play.
Perhaps the Miners had their upcoming San Diego trip on their mind.
Plus, the Jordan win the other night was a biggie. Bingham isn't good
enough to win without giving an effort. That was proven tonight.
Next: Bingham is done until it plays in a five-day tournament in San
Diego after Christmas. Davis goes to West Jordan today (Dec. 17).

Dec. 12 - Bingham 44, Jordan 37
Story of the game: Ben Clifford scored 12 points and Shad
Sommerville had 11, including a pair of key free throws near the end,
as Bingham hung on to beat Jordan in the Miners' 100th anniversary
celebration game.
Bingham's best moment: The contest attracted a capacity crowd,
including several players from Bingham's former teams. It was a
hard-fought defensive battle and the Miners made the key plays in the
final quarter.
Jordan's best moment: Jordan Bernardo had 11 points and Kevin
Goldsmith 10 for the Beetdiggers, who suffered their first loss. This
game was close all the way. These teams could meet again in
post-season.
Statistical notes: Bingham led 14-11 at halftime. The teams found
their offenses a bit more in the second half. The Miners made just 4-8
free throws, so it was a good idea for Jordan to foul near the end. This
time, Bingham made the shots.
What we learned from this game: This was a good idea for Bingham
and the crowd had a clear affect on the game's outcome. This felt like
a playoff contest. Does Bingham ever lose to Jordan?
Next: Bingham plays Davis at home on Dec. 16. Jordan prepares for
its two-day tournament at home next weekend.

Dec. 9 - Bingham 80, Timpanogos 45
Story of the game: Blake Krahenbuhl and Ben Clifford scored 16
points apiece as Bingham blew out Timpanogos with a big second
half and claimed an impressive win in its first road game.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 30-19 at halftime, but blew
the home team out right away in the second half, pouring in 25
third-quarter points to turn this game into a rout. Bingham was able to
empty the bench later in the game.
Timpanogos' best moment: This was not a winnable game for the
Timberwolves, who fell behind early. Trevor Thomas had 12 points for
Timpanogos, including a pair of three-pointers.
Statistical notes: The game stats resembled Bingham's girls team.
Krahenbuhl had three treys. Nate Girsberger added 13 for the Miners,
who also shot a respectable 16-22 from the free-throw line in an
unfamilar gym.
What we learned from this game: Bingham is 3-0 and has been
impressive. This was a good road win, and is important because the
Miners' preseason schedule is filled with home games.
Next: Bingham returns home and will take on Jordan Friday.
Timpanogos travels to St. George to play in Dixie's tournament.

Dec. 5 - Bingham 59, Bountiful 55
Story of the game: Cody Steffensen scored 17 points and pulled
down 15 rebounds, including a big one after a missed free throw late
in the game, as Bingham rallied from a six-point deficit to upend
Bountiful.
Bingham's best moment: The Bingham defense had been lit up in
the third quarter, outscored 20-15, and trailed 44-38. But Steffensen
keyed the comeback. The Miners also hit 16-18 free throws and
snatched a win in front of the home fans.
Bountiful's best moment: Sean Carey, a 6-7 senior, led the Braves
with 22 points. Coach Mike Maxwell did not attend the game, so the
team was coached by his son, Larry Maxwell.
Statistical notes: Jeff Moncur backed up Carey with 11 points. Blake
Krahenbuhl and Michael Arnell had nine points apiece for Bingham.
What we learned from this game: Steffensen did not start the game,
so his output counts as "bench points." Bingham is a deep team. The
Miners lost a close one at Bountiful last season. We never learned
why coach Maxwell was not at the game. It would have been nice if the
Tribune article could have explained it.
Next: The Miners travel to Timpanogos on Dec. 9. Bountiful goes to
West the same night.

Dec. 2 - Bingham 54, Olympus 40
Story of the game: Size did matter as Bingham rode the scoring of
6-foot-5 Remington Peck and 6-8 Ben Clifford. Peck scored 17 points
and Clifford had 14 as the Miners took the early lead and never
relinquished it in both team's opener.
Bingham's best moment: Peck played a big role in the Miners'
football season, and showed little rust. He even hit a three-pointer.
Bingham led 26-17 at halftime, and didn't let Oly rally.
Oly's best moment: Like their football team, the Titans like the quick
score. Connor Brady nailed four treys, and seven of Oly's 12 baskets
came from the three-point line. Brady led Oly with 15 points, while
Spencer Hille had 11.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot 9-of-17 from the free-throw line.
That's not surprising this early in the season. Both teams will likely
improve dramatically in all parts of the game as the season
progresses.
What we learned from this game: Bingham has the enrollment and
coaching to always be a basketball force. The Miners were among the
late starters for basketball because they figured their football season
would last well into the post-season. Peck is a great athlete, and will
be fun to watch all season.
Next: Bingham will get a test Friday when it hosts 4A power Bountiful.
Oly has a week off before playing at Layton Dec. 9.
