Feb. 27 - American Fork 68, Bingham 48

Story of the game: Haley Holmstead scored 27 points and Kaycee
Mansfield had a perfect night shooting and finished with 15 as
American Fork wore down Bingham and advanced to the 5A state
championship game.

Bingham's key moment: The deeper Miners played right with
American Fork for the entire first half. But they couldn't keep up with
the Cavemen's 61 percent shooting, as well as their rebounding
and defensive efforts. Taeja Afalava led Bingham with 12 points.

American Fork's key moment: The Cavemen outrebounded
Bingham 31-23, had more assists (15-5) and steals (9-3). The
game was close until AF blew the game open in the fourth quarter.

Statistical notes: American Fork outscored Bingham 22-10 in the
final period. Dezz Ramos, Maddie Hind and Nicole Yazzie had
seven points each for Bingham. The Miners only made one
three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: Bingham has been dominating
opponents, but got a dose of its own medicine this time.

Next: Bingham is done for the season. American Fork advanced to
play
Riverton in the 5A final.

Feb. 26 - Bingham 53, Weber 24

Story of the game: Dezz Ramos scored 11 points and Chalese
Fankhauser had 10, but it was Bingham's defense that held
Weber without a basket the entire first half in the 5A state
tournament win.

Bingham's key moment: The Miners' defense was phenomenal,
and that helped Bingham grab a 26-6 halftime lead. Coach
Rasmussen emptied the bench in the second half and 18 players
got a chance to play.

Weber's key moment: The Warriors had played Bingham earlier in
the season, but they were clearly frustrated. They didn't reach
double figures until late in the third quarter. Weber shot 17 percent
for the game.

Statistical notes: Bingham led 48-10 at the end of the third quarter.
Shay Sorensen had nine points and 10 rebounds for Weber.
Bingham was 20-29 from the free-throw line; Weber was 10-26.

What we learned from this game: Bingham is in the semifinals
and, with a win, could be headed for another match up with
Riverton in the finale.

Next: Bingham plays top-ranked American Fork Feb. 27. Weber is
done for the year.

Feb. 23 - Bingham 62, Layton 34

Story of the game: Taeja Afalava and Nicole Yazzie scored 12
points apiece as Bingham ran Layton ragged, using 12 players in
whipping the Lancers in their 5A state tournament opener.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners dominated from the
beginning, leading 15-6 after the first quarter and 36-14 at halftime.
They limited Layton to 20.5% shooting. Eleven players scored for
Brighton, and the team seemed to scare the other squads outside
Region 3.

Layton's best moment: The Lancers rallied in the fourth quarter,
but it was far too late. Addie Moore led Layton with 11 points,
including a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.

Statistical notes: Bingham shot just under 50 percent from the
field. Yazzie had a pair of three-pointers for the Miners. These
teams played earlier this season (Dec. 31) and Bingham won
66-44.

What we learned from this game: The Miners destroyed Layton
and gained a lot of respect from opponents who were watching the
game.

Next: Bingham advances to play Weber on Feb. 26. Layton is done
for the season.

Feb. 17 - Bingham 73, Hunter 31

Story of the game: Taeja Afalava led a balanced scoring attack
with 11 points and eight rebounds as Bingham buried Hunter in
the both team's regular-season finale.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners dominated every region
team, except Riverton. They ran to a big lead, and filled the game
with a mix of players, like they had all season. Bingham led 17-7
after one quarter and outscored Hunter 25-7 in the third period.

Hunter's best moment: This was never a winnable game for the
Wolverines, even on "Senior Night," their last home game. Iosua
was Hunter's top scorer with 11 points.

Statistical notes: Bingham was 17-23 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 11-24. Bingham had 14 players score. Innie Pataialii
had two three-pointers for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: Bingham is ready for state. The
Miners earned a No. 2 seed, but will be a scary team for any team
to face.

Next: Bingham opens the 5A state tournament against Layton Feb.
23.
Hunter is done for the year.

Feb. 12 - Bingham 52, Copper Hills 27

Story of the game: Dezz Ramos scored nine points, and Nicole
Yazzie had five points, seven rebounds and eight assists as
Bingham emptied its bench in an easy Region 3 win over Copper
Hills.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 21-8 after the first quarter
and 37-12 at halftime. The outcome was never in doubt as they
held their second straight opponent to just 27 points.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies rallied in the fourth
quarter to try to make the score more respectable. Kim Bohne had
five points for Copper Hills.

Statistical notes: Bingham was 18-27 from the free-throw line;
Copper Hills was 4-11. Bingham led 48-14 before the Grizzlies
came back.

What we learned from this game: Bingham finishes the season
with the region's two doormats and the outcome was not
surprising. These games are tuneups for state.

Next: Bingham plays at Hunter Feb. 17 to end the regular season.
Copper Hills ends at home against Riverton the same night.

Feb. 10 - Bingham 53, Kearns 27

Story of the game: Rachel Gines scored 12 points and pulled
down eight rebounds as Bingham's defense dominated and that
helped the Miners clinch at least second place in Region 3 with the
victory.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 22-7 at halftime and
didn't let Kearns reach double figures until midway through the
third quarter. Nicole Yazzie scored seven points and dished out 10
assists.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars were never in the game, but
did play more competitively in the second half. Brooke Larsen led
Kearns with nine points.

Statistical notes: Thirteen different players scored for Bingham.
The Miners were 13-17 from the free-throw line; Kearns was 10-17.
The Cougars had just eight field goals.

What we learned from this game: This shows again how much of
a difference there is between Riverton and Bingham, and the rest
of the region.

Next: Bingham plays host to Copper Hills on Feb. 12. Kearns has
Hunter at home the same night.

Feb. 5 - Riverton 56, Bingham 36

Story of the game: Alle Finch scored 15 points and Shelby Ostler
had 12 as Riverton pulled away from Bingham in the third quarter
and put itself in great position to win the Region 3 title.

Bingham's best moment: Bingham took an 11-10 lead after the
first quarter, but couldn't hold it. Malorie Dixon had 10 points and
Taeja Afalava added nine.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 21-17 at halftime,
but came out and outscored Bingham 16-6 in the third quarter to
put the game away. Shaye Murphy added 10 points.

Statistical notes: Riverton had five three-point baskets; Bingham
had none. The teams shot about the same from the free-throw line.
Riverton swept the season series and held Bingham to its season
low on offense each time.

What we learned from this game: Riverton has a two-game lead,
and owns the tiebreaker, with three games remaining. Riverton is
unbeaten, so that statistic probably won't matter anyway.

Next: Riverton plays at Hunter Feb. 10. Bingham takes on Kearns
at home the same night.

Jan. 29 - Bingham 79, West Jordan 45

Story of the game: Nicole Newbold scored 14 points and pulled
down eight rebounds and Bingham used its usual team effort to
whip West Jordan in a Region 3 game.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners had 14 players score this
time. They led 18-4 after the first quarter and were never
challenged. This team has so much depth its scary.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars lost their third straight,
and did play competitively, despite the score. Gabriella Rodriguez
had 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

Statistical notes: Bingham continued to add to its lead, even while
playing reserves and JV players. Bingham was 23-34 from the
free-throw line; West Jordan was 10-22. Four different Miner
players hit three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: Bingham is getting warmed up
again for its upcoming Region 3 title game at Riverton. Those
teams are - by far - the class of the league.

Next: Bingham plays at Riverton Feb. 5. West Jordan plays Hunter
at home the same night.

Jan. 27 - Bingham 79, Hunter 32

Story of the game: Rachel Gines led a balanced scoring attack
with 10 points as Bingham blasted Hunter and emptied its bench
in the process. Eighteen different players scored for Bingham in
this Region 3 game.

Bingham's best moment: The outcome of this game was never in
doubt. Bingham led 20-9 after the first quarter and 46-19 at
halftime. This had to be a record for most players on the bench at
one time.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines battled the best they could,
but the difference in these programs is just too much. Iosua was
Hunter's top scorer with 10 points.

Statistical notes: Bingham was 19-27 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was just 1-4. Utu Bloomfield had nine points for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: There are a couple of teams in
Region 3 that just can't compete with Bingham and Riverton, and
the obvious happens. At least coach Rasmussen emptied his
bench and even found JV players

Next: Bingham plays host to West Jordan on Jan. 29. Hunter goes
to
Copper Hills the same day.

Jan. 22 - Bingham 62, Copper Hills 10

Story of the game: Camille Tua had nine points and Maddie Hind
eight as Bingham kept Copper Hills scoreless in the second and
third quarters and rolled to an easy Region 3 victory.

Bingham's best moment: Bingham led 22-2 after the first quarter
and held the Grizzlies scoreless until the fourth period. That may be
a record. The Miners cleared their bench. At one point, the score
was 46-2.

Copper Hills' best moment: It would probably have to be the fourth
quarter, when the Grizzlies scored eight of their 10 points. This had
to be a tough - even embarrassing - loss.

Statistical notes: The 10 points was a season best, of course, for
Bingham's defense. Brittany Hackworth was the Grizzlies top
scorer with three points - a single three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: Bingham and Riverton are at
the top of the league, and Copper Hills and Hunter are at the
bottom. There is a big space in-between.

Next: Bingham plays host to Hunter on Jan. 27. Copper Hills goes
to
Riverton the same night.

Jan. 20 - Bingham 63, Kearns 54

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie scored 21 points as Bingham
pulled away in the second half and beat Kearns, despite a
35-points effort from the Cougars' Brooke Larsen.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led only 29-28 at halftime,
but slowly build the lead after intermission. Freshman Dezz Ramos
added 13 for Bingham, which was coming off its first loss of the
season.

Kearns' best moment: Larsen was on fire. Her effort was more
than double her previous best. The Cougars stayed with Bingham
the entire game, and were helped by the Miners' poor free-throw
shooting.

Statistical notes: The 54 points given up was a season-worst for
Bingham's defense. The Miners hit just 7-19 from the free-throw
line; Kearns was 12-27. Ramos had three treys for Kearns.

What we learned from this game: The loss to Riverton may have
stung Bingham rather badly, but Kearns isn't a bad team. This was
the first time we've seen Larsen play like this.

Next: Bingham travels to play Copper Hills on Jan. 22. Kearns
goes to
Hunter the same night.

Jan. 15 - Riverton 49, Bingham 34

Story of the game: Dani Lockhart scored 21 points and Chelsea
Sorenson had 14, but it was Riverton's defense that made the
difference in the Silverwolves' win over Bingham in their first
Region 3 showdown.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners' offense had trouble, as
shown by their 34 points. They fell behind early, but an 11-2 run in
the second quarter made it a game again. Nicole Yazzie led
Bingham with eight points.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves went to Bingham and
gained respect immediately by taking a 10-4 first-quarter lead.
After Bingham narrowed it, they slowly built the lead again.

Statistical notes: Riverton's Alle Finch had nine points and four
blocked shots. Bingham had over 20 turnovers. Lockhart was the
rebound leader with 11.

What we learned from this game: This has become a good rivalry,
but Riverton now has beaten the Miners three straight times (twice
last  year). It's Bingham's first loss this year. Let's see how hungry
Bingham becomes when they meet again Feb. 5.

Next: Bingham travels to play Kearns Jan. 20. Riverton takes on
Hunter at home the same night.

Jan. 13 - Bingham 65, West Jordan 30

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie led a balanced scoring attack with
14 points as Bingham built a big lead early, substituted freely, and
whipped West Jordan in each team's Region 3 opener.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 14-2 after the first quarter
and 32-9 by halftime. Fourteen different players scored for
Bingham, who were never in danger of losing this game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars played better in the
second half, scoring 21 of their 30 points. Their offense has been
better lately, but this was never a winnable game.

Statistical notes: The 30 points given up was a season best for
Bingham's defense. So far, eight of Bingham's 12 games have
been routs (20 points or more).

What we learned from this game: This was the region opener and
it wasn't a surprise. In fact, it was a break. Bingham's biggest
game is coming up.

Next: Bingham takes on Riverton at home Jan. 15. West Jordan
goes to
Hunter the same night.

Jan. 7 - Bingham 53, Pleasant Grove 42

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie scored 16 points and Maddie
Hind added 10 as Bingham fought off a Pleasant Grove rally with a
big third quarter and stayed unbeaten so far this season.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 13-4 after the first
quarter, but Pleasant Grove went on a 12-0 run to take the lead.
Yazzie hit three straight free throws late in the quarter to regain the
momentum and Bingham then outscored PG 21-9 in the third
period to take a commanding lead.

Pleasant Grove's best moment: The Vikings' 12-0 run was
impressive. Not only did PG put up the points, but they held
Bingham scoreless until 1:08 remained the period. Jennifer
Hamson led PG with 17 points.

Statistical notes: Bingham had a huge advantage at the free-throw
line, canning 20-30 shots. PG was just 3-11. Yazzie had three of
the Miners' five treys.

What we learned from this game: Bingham ended the preseason
with an 11-0 record and we'll find out soon if it is the favorite to win
Region 3.

Next: Bingham opens the region season Jan. 13 at West Jordan.
Pleasant Grove goes to Spanish Fork Friday (Jan. 9).

Jan. 6 - Bingham 62, Brighton 45

Story of the game: Taeja Afalava led a balanced scoring attack
with 10 points as Bingham dominated the third quarter and
whipped Brighton for the second time in three weeks.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led just 28-23 at halftime, but
outscored Brighton 18-6 in the third quarter. Bingham had 12
players score, so fatigue never sent in and it got the win.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals tried to rally in the fourth
quarter ... to no avail. The third quarter made the difference. Katie
Tominaga had 16 points to lead Brighton.

Statistical notes: Bingham had two treys; Brighton had none.
Rachel Gines and Nicole Newbold had eight points each for
Bingham. Kim Ringwood scored 11 for Brighton.

What we learned from this game: The Miners improved to 10-0
with the win, and did it with a team effort. That was probably a good
idea since Bingham plays again tonight.

Next: Bingham travels to Pleasant Grove tonight (Jan. 7). Brighton
goes to
Taylorsville Jan. 14.

Dec. 31 - Bingham 66, Layton 44

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie scored 19 points as Bingham
pulled away in the second quarter and ended 2008 with yet another
non-region win.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners outscored Layton 19-8 in the
second quarter to build a 16-point halftime lead. The Lancers
couldn't get any closer. Malorie Dixon added 11 points and Dezz
Ramos had eight.

Layton's best moment: Lee had 14 points to lead Layton, which
suffered its second loss. The Lancers had more free-throw
opportunities than Bingham, but it didn't translate into a win.

Statistical notes: Layton was 17-30 from the line, while Bingham
was 12-20. Eleven players scored for the Miners. The game ended
a streak in which Bingham had six of seven games at home.

What we learned from this game: Bingham is still unbeaten and
headed toward Region 3 play on a roll. The Miners' teamwork is
impressive.

Next: Bingham plays at Brighton Jan. 6. Layton takes on Fremont at
home the same night in a Region 1 game.

Dec. 18 - Bingham 39, Brighton 34

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie scored eight points, and Rachel
Gines had seven points and pulled down eight rebounds and
Bingham narrowly escaped its first loss was a non-region win over
Brighton.

Bingham's best moment: This was a close one. Bingham led
most of the game, but couldn't put the visitors away. The Miners
were ahead 29-22 and had to repulse Brighton's upset bid in the
fourth quarter.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals fell to 5-4, but gave it their
best shot. Katie Tominaga led Brighton with 11 points. The longer
they stayed in the game, the more they felt like they could compete.

Statistical notes: The 39 points tied a season low for Bingham on
offense. Taeja Afalava had seven points, but only seven players
scored for Bingham as the team couldn't empty the bench.

What we learned from this game: This was the last game before
Christmas break, and that might have made it more difficult to
concentrate on the game. Bingham can't afford an off night.

Next: The Miners are off until Dec. 31, when the play Layton at
home.
Brighton travels to Davis Dec. 30.

Dec. 16 - Bingham 60, Davis 37

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie had 12 points and Maddie Hind
11, but it was Bingham's second-half defense that helped the
Miners continue their unbeaten season with a non-region road win
over Davis.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners trailed 12-9 after the first
quarter, but got their offense in gear to take a halftime lead. In the
second half, the defense improved, holding Jordan to just seven
points each quarter and that turned this contest into a rout.

Davis' best moment: The Darts came out and gave Bingham a
game, marking the first time this season the Miners trailed after the
first period. Allison Blake led Davis in scoring with 15 points.

Statistical notes: Bingham outscored Davis 15-7 in each of the
final two quarters. The Miners hit 18-26 free throws, one of their
best percentages this season. Freshman Dezz Ramos had 10
points for Bingham. Davis' 37 points on offense was a season low
- by far.

What we learned from this game: A good road win for Bingham,
although there was a "scare" early. At least the Miners are getting
well-prepared for region play. This won't be their last scare.
Bingham is probably helping other teams improve, knowing how
well they have to play to compete.

Next: Bingham returns home to take on Brighton Dec. 18. Davis
travels to Clearfield Dec. 19.

Dec. 12 - Bingham 69, Jordan 45

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie came back from her one-game
scoring "slump," lighting up the scoreboard with 20 points, as
Bingham turned up its defensive pressure in the second half and
rolled past Jordan in a non-region game.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 36-29 at halftime, but
held Jordan to 16 second-half points. Eleven players scored for
Bingham. Rachel Gines backed up Yazzie with 15 points.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers dropped to 1-5, but they
gave it their best shot. Steph Burt led Jordan with 10 points and
Luciana Soares Bree Scuderi added nine apiece.

Statistical notes: Jordan hit 15-17 free throws. This was Jordan's
third game in three nights. Yazzie had four three-pointers for the
Miners.

What we learned from this game: The games are getting better,
but Bingham is still 6-0. Yazzie proved why she is an all-state
candidate (again) by coming back with a big game.

Next: Bingham travels to play Davis on Dec. 16. Jordan goes to
Mountain View the same night.

Dec. 9 - Bingham 39, Syracuse 36

Story of the game: Post players Rachel Gines and Taeja Afalava
scored 10 points apiece as Bingham avoided its first loss by
holding off Syracuse in a non-region game.

Bingham's best moment: This was the Miners' first close game
this season. Bingham led just 16-10 at halftime as Syracuse was
able to dictate the game tempo.

Syracuse's best moment: The Titans fell to 5-1 with the loss, but
they earned Bingham's respect. Kiana Fonua and Butler led
Syracuse with nine points each.

Statistical notes: Leading scorer Nicole Yazzie had just two points.
The offensive point total was a season low. Bingham did play great
defense to hold Syracuse to just 10 first-half points. Eight players
still scored for the Miners.

What we learned from this game: Bingham has become a
"marked" team due to its success. The Miners will likely get their
opponent's best shot from now on. They can't take a night off.

Next: Bingham finishes its four-game homestand against Jordan
Dec. 12. Syracuse travels to Mountain Crest the same night.

Dec. 6 - Bingham 66, Spanish Fork 46

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie led a balanced scoring attack with
16 points, including three three-pointers, as Bingham ran to a big
lead and turned back Spanish Fork in a non-region game.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners had a big second quarter,
turning a 13-6 lead into a 34-17 halftime advantage. The teams
played evenly in the second half, but Bingham filled the contest with
reserves.

Spanish Fork's best moment: A good effort by the Dons to keep
this game relatively close. Spanish Fork tried to slow the game, but
it got away in the second quarter. Erin Redd led the Dons with 13
points.

Statistical notes: Brynlie Neilson had three treys for Spanish Fork,
which fell to 1-3. Rachel Gines had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Maddie Hind had six boards. Spanish Fork had a big advantage at
the free throw line, hitting 19-30 shots. Bingham was just 9-16.

What we learned from this game: This was a slower-paced game
- again - but Bingham still had little trouble. The schedule gets a
little tougher now.

Next: Bingham takes on Syracuse on Dec. 9. Spanish Fork has
Payson at home the same night.

Dec. 4 - Bingham 62, Weber 33

Story of the game: Mallory Dixon scored 10 points and led 12
players who scored for Bingham in the Miners' easy non-region
victory over Weber on their home floor.

Bingham's best moment: Bingham didn't reach its past scoring
amounts, but this game was still never in doubt. The Miners led
16-6 after the first quarter and 30-12 at halftime. Bingham was able
to substitute freely throughout most of the second half.

Weber's best moment: The Warriors can be proud to know that
they held Bingham's scoring machine to a season low (to date).

Statistical notes: Weber hit just 5-14 free throws, leaving available
points off the scoreboard. Maddie Hind led Bingham in rebounding
with six. Dixon had three steals.

What we learned from this game: It looks like opponents are
going to try to slow the game in order to stay with Bingham. We've
already seen that you can't outscore them. We'll see how creative
opponents can become.

Next: Bingham has begun a series of four straight home games.
Next is Spanish Fork Dec. 6. Weber plays at Roy tonight (Dec. 5).

Dec. 2 - Bingham 86, Alta 38

Story of the game: Taeja Afalava scored 15 points and Nicole
Yazzie added 11 as Bingham jumped to a huge 32-4 first-quarter
lead and embarrassed Alta in a non-region game.

Bingham's best moment: This game was over early. Thirty-two
points in a quarter will probably be a season high for any Utah
team, but the Miners had 34 against Hillcrest. This allowed the
Miners to empty their bench again. Bingham had 13 different
players score.

Alta's best moment: Probably when the final buzzer sounded, and
they could run into the locker room. The Hawks were even
outscored 27-21 in the second half by Bingham reserves. Erin
Foster led Alta with 14 points.

Statistical notes: Yazzie was Bingham's outside shooting threat
with two treys. Bingham hit 15-21 free throws, while Alta was 6-12.

What we learned from this game: Bingham is a dangerous team,
and Alta has to just forget about it and regroup for the next one. The
Miners have opened the season with two huge routs on opponent's
floors. Is there a possibility of peaking too early?

Next: Bingham heads home to take on Weber on Dec. 4. Alta has
Snow Canyon at home the same night.

Nov. 25 - Bingham 98, Hillcrest 53

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie scored 19 points and 10 players
scored for Bingham, as the Miners turned on their offense in the
third quarter and routed Hillcrest in the season opener for both
teams.

Bingham's best moment: This was an impressive offensive
showing. The Miners were one basket from 100 points. They led
41-28 at halftime, but outscored Hillcrest 34-11 in the third quarter.

Hillcrest's best moment: Kelsey Heard led the Huskies with 24
points. This game ended up resembling a track meet, and Hillcrest
couldn't keep up. You can bet the defense will get a lot of work in
practice

Statistical notes: 98 points will likely be a season high for ANY
Utah basketball team - boys or girls. This game was a foul fest,
too, with 79 free throws being taken.

What we learned from this game: Bingham has something going,
but it has to make certain it doesn't peak too early.

Next: Bingham travels to play Alta on Dec. 2. Hillcrest goes to
Salem Hills the same night.
