BOUNTIFUL FOOTBALL - 2009
|
Oct. 30 - Bonneville 14, Bountiful 7 (OT)
Story of the game - Manaia Filiaga threw two touchdown passes to
Sage Stiremen and the Bonneville defense came up with four
turnovers, most at key times, as the Lakers edged Bountiful and
advanced in the 4A playoffs.
Bountiful's best moment - The Braves led most of the game,
thanks to a 16-yard run by RB Ben Lemon and their usual stiff
defense. Bonneville had just 142 yards of offense and six first
downs, but the turnovers were too much to overcome.
Bonneville's best moment - The Lakers took advantage of a
fumbled punt deep in Bountiful territory to score their first
touchdown. They also recovered a Bountiful fumble late in the game
when the Braves were in field-goal range.
What we learned from this game - This was a winnable game for
Bountiful, but the Braves couldn't do it. Their defense kept them in
the game, just like it has done all season. This was a tough way to
end the year.
Next - Bountiful finished with a 9-2 record. Bonneville advances to
the 4A quarterfinals at Dixie.

News also sent a photographer. To read the D-News story, click

Oct. 22 - Bountiful 27, Olympus 6
Story of the game - QB Tyler Talbot threw two touchdown passes,
and the Bountiful defense held Olympus to less than 100 yards total
offense to claim the Region 6 win and enter the 4A state playoffs
with a No. 2 seed.
Bountiful's best moment - After a scoreless first quarter, the Braves
scored two touchdowns and had a 14-0 lead at halftime. Bountiful's
defense never let Oly cross the goal line, and limited a region
opponent to one TD or less for the fifth time in six games.
Oly's best moment - The offense had a rough night. The Titans
scored their only touchdown on an 85-yard kickoff return by Jace
Peterson.
What we learned from this game - The Braves go into the
post-season with a lot of confidence in their defense. The bad news
is they don't get an opening-round home playoff game.
Next - Bountiful opens the 4A playoffs at Bonneville. Olympus
travels to Timpview.

D-News story, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Oct. 16 - Bountiful 46, Stansbury 7
Story of the game - QB Tyler Talbot threw three touchdown passes,
and the Bountiful defense also scored a couple of times as the
Braves buried Stansbury in a Region 6 game.
Bountiful's best moment - Bountiful led 15-0 after one quarter and
then made it 39-0 by halftime. This was a one-sided game and
Braves embarrassed the home team in their final home game of
the season.
Stansbury's best moment - Austin Butler scored on a 1-yard run to
prevent the shutout. The Stallions have been shut out twice this
season, but have scored late to prevent a shutout on several other
occasions.
What we learned from this game - Bountiful's 46 points was a
season high. Surprisingly, the Braves have not recorded a shutout
this season. If it was going to happen, it would have been tonight.
Next - Bountiful ends the regular season at Olympus. Stansbury
plays at rival Tooele.
Links - There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. There was no report in the Salt
Lake Tribune.
Oct. 9 - Highland 9, Bountiful 7
Story of the game - RB Toi Taufa rushed for 156 yards and a
touchdown, and the Highland defense held Bountiful its
lowest-scoring game of the season and took control of Region 6
with a victory.
Bountiful's best moment - The Braves had trouble moving the
football, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave the team new life,
and QB Ty Talbot hit Ryen Pope on a 59-yard touchdown pass that
tied the game. Helam Heimuli also helped by blocking a Highland
field goal late in the game.
Highland's best moment - The Rams dominated this game, but
were penalized repeatedly and missed three field goals. Highland
took advantage of a bad punt snap that resulted in a safety, and that
made the difference in the game.
What we learned from this game - This game could decide the
Region 6 title, but both teams will advance to the post-season. This
game was almost identical to last year's first round 4A playoff
matchup.
Next - Bountiful plays at Stansbury. Highland takes on Woods
Cross.

the game. To read the Deseret News article, click here. To view the
Salt Lake Tribune story, click here. To see the D-News photo

Sept. 30 - Bountiful 24, East 3
Story of the game - RB Mitch Johnson rushed for 74 and scored
three times, and the Bountiful defense kept East out of the end zone
in a convincing Region 6 victory.
Bountiful's best moment - The Braves weren't impressive early in
this locally televised game, and Johnson was the only ball carrier
on either team would had a good game. The Braves led 3-0 at
halftime and extended it to 17-3 after three quarters.
East's best moment - East' s scoring information was not
available. But the Leopards' defense did look good in slowing down
the Braves during the first half. It was still a game at halftime.
What we learned from this game - This was a good win for
Bountiful, which might have been looking ahead to next week's
game. The Braves learned something at halftime and came out
with much more fervor.
Next - Bountiful plays host to Highland. East has its homecoming
game against Skyline.
Links - There was no local media coverage of this game, but it was
on TV. To read the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt
Lake Tribune box score, click here.
Sept. 25 - Bountiful 23, Viewmont 21
Story of the game - QB Tyler Talbot passed for two touchdowns,
and kicker Spencer Mohlman booted a 23-yard field goal late in the
game to lead Bountiful to a narrow non-region win over rival
Viewmont.
Bountiful's best moment - After trailing 7-0, the Braves scored the
next three touchdowns, including a 75-yard pass play from Talbot to
Ryen Pope that gave the home team their first lead.
Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings got 172 yards rushing,
which is likely a season-high against Bountiful's defense. Jeremy
Lieber's 2-yard run gave Viewmont the lead, but the Vikings couldn't
hang on.
What we learned from this game - This was Bountiful's second
straight rivalry game, and the Braves won both. They now have to
play three of their next four games on the road.
Next - Bountiful plays at East in a Region 6 game. Viewmont goes
to Davis in Region 1.
Links - The Deseret News had a reporter at the game. To read the
D-News story, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,
Sept. 18 - Bountiful 14, Woods Cross 12
Story of the game - RB Ben Lemon ran 57 yards for a touchdown
with less than two minutes left, and then the Bountiful defense
stopped a last-second two-point conversion try in the final seconds
to beat Woods Cross for the 19th straight time.
Bountiful's best moment - It wasn't until Mitch Johnson's pass rush
forced WX QB Tyler Parson to throw an incompletion on the
two-point play attempt that the Braves could relax. This game was
close the entire way. Dillon Salazar had a big game defensively with
two interceptions.
WX's best moment - RB C.J. Corry had 103 yards on 24 carries,
including a first-quarter touchdown that gave the Wildcats the lead.
Bountiful led 7-6 late in the game until Lemon scored, but that gave
Woods Cross a chance to rally, and it almost did.
What we learned from this game - Tough game for Bountiful, but
the Braves emerged unscathed and unbeaten.
Next - Bountiful has a non-region home game against Viewmont.
Woods Cross travels to East.

had reporters at the game. To read the Deseret News, click here.

Sept. 11 - Bountiful 35, Tooele 6
Story of the game - Tyler Farr rushed for 139 yards and three
touchdowns - all of the scores came in the first quarter - as
Bountiful jumped to a big lead and cruised to a Region 6 win over
Tooele.
Bountiful's best moment - The Braves' offense was unstoppable in
the opening half. Tooele, meanwhile, never got anything going. The
Bountiful defense held the Buffaloes to 130 yards, and they didn't
score until the game had been decided.
Tooele's best moment - Milo Leakehe scored Tooele's only
touchdown, and prevented the shutout. The Buffaloes had
somewhat of a running game, but only completed two passes.
What we learned from this game - This was homecoming for
Bountiful, and it was a relatively easy win. The Braves have been
dominating in all four games so far, but it will get tougher next week.
Next - Bountiful plays host to rival Woods Cross. Tooele travels to
Highland.
Links - The Salt Lake Tribune and Davis County Clipper had
reporters at the game. To read the Tribune story, click here. To view
the Deseret News brief, click here. To see the Clipper article, click

Sept. 4 - Bountiful 40, Logan 7
Story of the game - Karl Folland, Conner Winters and Tyler Talbot
led Bountiful's energized defense, and Tyler Farr returned a kickoff
back for a touchdown for the second straight week as the Braves
won easily.
Bountiful's best moment - Farr quieted the Logan crowd with his
88-yard return to start the game. RB Ben Lemon added two short
TD runs and the Braves' defense got a safety, part of a 23-point
second quarter, that put the game away.
Logan's best moment - This was homecoming at Logan, but the
game didn't go well. QB Tyler Stevens threw for 241 yards, but
couldn't put the Grizzlies into the end zone until late in the game,
when RB D.J. Nelson scored on a 3-yard run.
What we learned from this game - This was a dominating
performance by Bountiful and boosted the Braves into the top 4A
team in the state, according to the Deseret News.
Next - Bountiful opens Region 6 play at home against Tooele.
Logan goes to Park City.
Links - Both Salt Lake newspapers had reporters at the game. To

Tribune article, click here.
Aug. 28 - Bountiful 35, Spanish Fork 7
Story of the game - Tyler Farr returned the second-half kickoff 90
yards for a touchdown, and the Bountiful defense held Spanish Fork
to just six yards total offense en route to a relatively easy non-region
win.
Bountiful's best moment - The Braves were disappointed they only
had a 14-0 lead at halftime, but Farr grabbed the kickoff to start the
third period and rambled all the way. That gave Bountiful the
cushion it needed.
Spanish Fork's best moment - The Dons' Blake Denning recovered
a Bountiful fumble on their 1-yard line, and then Spanish Fork drove
the length of the field to get on the scoreboard on a 4-yard run by
Tim Moala. Funny how Spanish drove 99 yards, but still had just six
yards of offense.
What we learned from this game - A good win for Bountiful,
although its offense was not early as impressive as the defense.
Last year, Bountiful had four shutout wins. This year's defense
could be just as good.
Next - Bountiful travels to play Logan in a non-region game.
Spanish Fork plays host to Orem.
Links - The Deseret News had a reporter and a photographer at the
game. To read the D-News story, click here. To view the Salt Lake
Tribune brief, click here. To check out the D-News photo gallery,

Aug. 21 - Bountiful 30, Lone Peak 9
Story of the game - Spencer Mohlman kicked three field goals and
Bountiful took advantage of eight Lone Peak turnovers to claim an
easier-than-expected win in the season opener for both teams.
Bountiful's best moment - Trailing 3-0, Bountiful scored on three of
its next four drives, thanks for Lone Peak turnovers that gave the
Braves the ball with short fields. Mitch Johnson and Ben Lemon
had touchdowns and the Braves never looked back.
Lone Peak's best moment - Kicker Ryne MacPherson nailed a
45-yard field goal with room to spare early in the second quarter to
give the Knights the lead. There wasn't much to cheer about after
that. The defense actually played decently, but you won't win games
with eight turnovers.
What we learned from this game - This was a good
confidence-building win for Bountiful against a 5A team. The Braves
were able to take advantage of what was given to them. There was
no doubt which was the sharper team.
Next - Bountiful takes on Spanish Fork in its home opener. Lone
Peak plays host to Mountain Crest.

game. To read the D-News story, click here. To access the Herald's
