BRIGHTON BOYS BASKETBALL - 2008-09
|
March 2 - Lehi 50, Brighton 33
Story of the game:
Jacob Obioma
scored 17 points as
Lehi used a pair of
11-0 runs to surprise
Brighton in the
opening round
of the 5A state
tournament.
Brighton's best
moment: The
Bengals didn't play
their best and, after
earning an 8-4 lead,
had trouble with
Lehi's inside attack.
Brighton had
stretches where its
speed and
quickness paid
dividends, but it
had no answer to
Lehi.
Lehi's best moment:
Obioma, Will Walker
and reserve Josh
Scott controlled the
key, scoring 19 of
Lehi's 28 first-half points. The Pioneers had a 20- point lead in the
third quarter and were really never threatened. Walker had 11 points
and Scott had six.
Statistical notes: Lehi was 11-17 from the free-throw line; Brighton
was just 2-7. Neil Richards led Brighton with seven points. The
Bengals' 33 points was easily a season low.
What we learned from this game: Brighton didn't come ready to
play, and Lehi took advantage. This game was expected to be
close, but ended up disappointing.
Next: Brighton is done for the season. Lehi advanced to play West
Jordan March 4.

Feb. 24 - Brighton 79, Taylorsville 47
Story of the game: Will Cannon finished his Brighton High School
career with 21 points as the Bengals whipped Taylorsville on
"Senior Night."
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals dominated, helped by their
fast breaking offense that had Taylorsville on its heels. Cannon had
a great night, and got help from Sam Wunderli and Austin Hudson,
who added 11 points each. Brighton had 13 different players score.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors had their moments, and
Jordan Edgington was often in the right place at the right time and
finished with 16 points.
Statistical notes: Brighton led 42-28 at halftime. Brighton was
22-35 from the free-throw line; Taylorsville was 11-20. Brighton had
the only three-pointer in the game.
What we learned from this game: With the win, Brighton earned
the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 5A state tournament. The Bengals
are 6-3 since losing leading scorer Corbin Miller to injury.
Next: Brighton advances to the 5A state tourney and will play Lehi
March 2. Taylorsville is done for the year.

Feb. 20 - Brighton 69, Hillcrest 59
Story of the game: Neil Richards joined Sam Wunderli as
Brighton's leading scorers with 16 points as the Bengals beat
Hillcrest and kept their hopes alive of a Region 2 title.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed 29-20 at halftime, but
got their offense in gear in the second half. Allen Barker and Loi
Masina chipped in with season-highs for each (11).
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies owned the first half, jumping
to a 15-7 first-quarter lead. Kyle Maughan was the top scorer with
18 points, while Austin Jackson had 13 and Danny Thompson 10.
Statistical notes: The last two games have been Hillcrest's worst
defensive outings. Brighton scored 49 of its 69 points in the second
half. The Bengals were 25-29 from the free-throw line. Hillcrest had
four three-pointers, all from different players.
What we learned from this game: Brighton has to hope Alta loses
its season finale and it beats Taylorsville. That will likely result in a
four-way tie for first place, and a coin flip to determine seeding.
Next: Brighton ends the regular season at home against
Taylorsville on Feb. 24. Hillcrest travels to Skyline.

Feb. 13 - Jordan 74, Brighton 72
Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo had a season-high 28 points
and the Beetdiggers took advantage of a decent foul differential to
hold off Brighton and move into a tie for third place in Region 2.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals to a season-high 24 points
from Will Cannon and 20 points from Sam Wunderli. This was
Brighton's style of play, with plenty of offense, but there wasn't quite
enough defense.
Jordan's best moment: Bernardo put the Diggers on his back. He
was - by far - the leading scorer and Brighton couldn't stop him even
when it knew he was going to try to score. Jordan shot 70 percent
from the free-throw line.
Statistical notes: Jordan's 74 points was a season high. The
Diggers also won their third straight game. Kevin Goldsmith added
10 points for Jordan. Neil Richards had 11 points for Brighton. The
Bengals were 17-24 from the free-throw line; Jordan was 28-41.
What we learned from this game: Brighton has lost two straight
now and, while the Bengals have secured a 4A state tournament
berth, they need some wins to earn a good seed.
Next: Brighton goes to Hillcrest on Feb. 20. Jordan plays host to
Taylorsville the same night.

Feb. 10 - Alta 43, Brighton 42
Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 11 points and Nate
Nielsen had 10 as Alta held off Brighton in a key Region 2 game,
despite a poor night at the free-throw line.
Brighton's best moment: Brighton led 11-8 after the first quarter
and extended it to 18-12 following a Wunderli layup and a
three-pointer by Derek Newell. The Bengals had a chance to win,
but Moses Lotulelei's half-court missed at the buzzer.
Alta's best moment: Alta held a slight lead most of the second half,
but couldn't extend it due to its free-throw woes, going 4-15 and
missing three straight 1-and-1s in the final minutes. Still, the
defense played well and held Brighton to a season low.
Statistical notes: Alta won the season series, capturing both
games by one point. Brighton was 2-7 from the free-throw line. Alta
is 6-1 in games decided by five points or less.
What we learned from this game: The Bengals fell into second
place and now must defeat third-place Jordan or face the possibility
of falling lower in the standings.
Next: Brighton travels to Jordan on Feb. 13. Alta plays at Hillcrest
the same night.

Feb. 6 - Brighton 59, Skyline 53
Story of the game: Moses Lotulelei scored 13 points and
sophomore Austin Hudson came off the bench to get 11 points and
six rebounds as Brighton rallied to beat Skyline for the second time
this season in a Region 2 game.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed most of the game,
but got another great effort from Sam Wunderli (12 points, 11
rebounds) and Will Cannon, who fought off foul trouble to score five
quick points in the fourth quarter when Brighton finally pulled ahead.
Skyline's best moment: The Eagles started fast. Kevin Wagstaff
had the hot hand and Skyline took a 16-4 first-quarter lead. Wagstaff
finished with 23 points, including four three-point baskets. Casey
Taylor added 14 points.
Statistical notes: Brighton shot badly, but outrebounded Skyline
33-23. Three players fouled out. Brighton shot 24-30 from the
free-throw line, while Skyline was 7-12. Skyline's leading scorer,
Ryan Osterloh, had just six points.
What we learned from this game: Brighton rallied to win this game
when most people thought Skyline would avenge the loss to the
Bengals earlier this season. Brighton's playing good basketball,
even though leading scorer Corbin Miller might be out of the rest of
the season.
Next: Brighton takes on Alta at home Feb. 10. Skyline plays host to
Jordan the same night.

Feb. 3 - Brighton 64, Taylorsville 59
Story of the game: Will Cannon scored 21 points and Sam
Wunderli added 19 as Brighton rallied in the third quarter to edge
Taylorsville in a Region 2 contest.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed 30-27 at halftime, but
rallied to take a six-point lead in the third period. Cannon led the
way. He had four three-pointers as Brighton had seven baskets
from beyond the three-point line.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors took an 18-12 lead and
got a season-best scoring night of 23 points from Stevie McCloyn.
Jordan Edgington added 15 points and Tyson Taylor had a
season-best 11.
Statistical notes: Brighton was 17-31 from the free-throw line;
Taylorsville was 17-20. This was the second-straight game where
Cannon was the leading scorer.
What we learned from this game: Brighton is 4-1 and has now
won three straight games without its injured leading scorer - Corbin
Miller. Cannon has taken some of the scoring load off Wunderli and
had a great game tonight.
Next: Brighton returns home to play Skyline Feb. 6. Taylorsville
goes to Alta the same night.

Jan. 30 - Brighton 45, Hillcrest 30
Story of the game: Will Cannon scored 11 points and Sam
Wunderli added 10 as Brighton broke open a close game in the
third quarter and moved into a first-place tie in Region 2 with a win
over Hillcrest.
Brighton's best moment: The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but
Brighton went on a 15-3 run in the third quarter to break the game
open. The Bengals' defense has its best game of the season.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies' defense held Brighton to
three points in the second quarter and was playing its style of
game. Jeremy Ulrich was the top scorer with seven points.
Statistical notes: In all of Hillcrest's five wins, it has scored 40 or
more points. The Huskies had just 10 field goals. Leading scorer
Kyle Maughan had just five points. It was the first time Cannon was
the leading scorer.
What we learned from this game: Brighton won this game by
playing its style starting in the third quarter, and simply ran away
from Hillcrest. The Bengals are tied for first place, and looking good.
Next: Brighton plays at Taylorsville Feb. 3. Hillcrest has Skyline at
home the same night.

Jan. 23 - Brighton 61, Jordan 59
Story of the game: Xan Ricketts scored 17 points, and Sam
Wunderli added 16 points and 15 rebounds as Brighton held off
Jordan in a tough Region 2 game.
Brighton's best moment: With Miller out, this has become
Wunderli's team and he showed it. He also had five assists and
four blocked shots in the win. He even hit a three-pointer. Allen
Barker helped out with 11 points.
Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers stayed close all the way.
Colton Burgon had 19 points, while Jordan Bernardo and Curt
Follett added 16 each.
Statistical notes: Brighton was a pathetic 7-21 from the free-throw
line (in its own gym). Jordan was 14-21.
What we learned from this game: Brighton was lucky to win this
game, and wouldn't have if not for Wunderli, Ricketts and Barker.
This team could mold into something special, though, until Miller
gets back.
Next: Brighton plays host to Hillcrest Jan. 30. Jordan goes to
Taylorsville that same night.

Jan. 20 - Alta 54, Brighton 53
Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 19 points and Nate
Nielsen had 16, including the winning three-pointer with 1.6
seconds left, as Alta hung to beat rival Brighton in a Region 2 game.
Brighton's best moment: Playing without injured leading scorer
Corbin Miller, the Bengals used the scoring of Sam Wunderli, who
had 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, to rally and even take
the lead with 1:42 left.
Alta's best moment: The Hawks led most of the game, jumping to
a 20-9 advantage in the first quarter. Alta maintained that lead until
late in the game. Jed DeLeeuw added 11 for Alta.
Statistical notes: Brighton was 13-19 from the free-throw line. Alta
was 2-2. Xan Ricketts had nine points for Brighton.
What we learned from this game: After coming off a big win over
Skyline, the Bengals had a chance to do it again. Miller is supposed
to be out of action for perhaps four weeks.
Next: Alta takes on Hillcrest at home on Jan. 23. Brighton plays host
to Jordan the same night.

the game. To read the Tribune story, click here. To view the Deseret
News brief, click here. To see the Tribune's photo gallery, click here.
Jan. 16 - Brighton 62, Skyline 56
Story of the game: Corbin Miller scored a season-high 27 points
and Brighton grabbed a nice lead and then held off Skyline in its
Region 2 opener, ending the Eagles' 11-game win streak.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals quieted the home crowd by
opening a 19-9 lead. Miller had a great outing and Brighton was
helped by some injuries to Skyline. The Bengals hit just enough
free throws to hang on to the win.
Skyline's best moment: The Eagles made a decent comeback,
especially in the fourth quarter. Ryan Osterloh had 25 points,
including four three-pointers. Casey Taylor had 10. Davey Weixler
and Zeke Egan didn't play, due to injuries.
Statistical notes: Brighton hit just 16-32 free throws. The Bengals'
defensive efforts was their best in a while. Sam Wunderli had 10
points for Brighton. Kevin Wagstaff scored nine for Skyline.
What we learned from this game: This was the first time we've
seen Brighton's "potential." Miller was also impressive to watch as
he and Osterloh put on a show. We'll see if Brighton can keep it
going.
Next: Brighton travels to play Alta Jan. 20. Skyline goes to Jordan
the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 9 - Lone Peak 94, Brighton 72
Story of the game: It was the Tyler Haws show, as the 6-5 senior
scored 33 points and broke a school record with 19 rebounds in the
Knights' convincing non-region victory over Brighton.
Brighton's best moment: The only time the Bengals were in the
game was the first quarter when they took a 7-5 lead, but then forgot
to play defense. Austin Hudson led with 16 points and Corbin Miller
had 15.
Lone Peak's best moment: This is a special team, and Haws is a
special player. The Knights had a big third quarter and built a
25-point lead. Tannon Pederson backed up Haws with 16 points.
Statistical notes: Haws just missed the school record for most
points - 35. Ironically, the 94 points wasn't the most Brighton has
given up this season. That's not a good sign. Xan Ricketts had one
of his best games with 11 points.
What we learned from this game: Brighton is young, but they can
score. The problem was Lone Peak can score better. There are
probably a few Region 2 opponents who can do that, too.
Next: Brighton opens region play at unbeaten Skyline on Jan. 16.
Lone Peak starts Region 4 action at home against Spanish Fork
Jan. 14.

Jan. 8 - Brighton 79, Spanish Fork 64
Story of the game: Sam Wunderli and Corbin Miller scored 13
points apiece as Brighton blew out Spanish Fork with a big second
quarter in a non-region game.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals had a balanced scoring
attack. After taking a 23-17 first-quarter lead, Brighton outscored
Spanish Fork 24-5 in the second period to put the game away. Will
Cannon and Allen Barker added 10 points each.
Spanish Fork's best moment: Trailing 47-22 at halftime, the Dons
got their offense going and narrowed the gap a bit, but it wasn't
enough. Gavin Hales had 17 points and Travis Still 15.
Statistical notes: This was Brighton's first home game in a month.
The Bengals had great passing, and only four three-pointers.
Twelve players scored.
What we learned from this game: Brighton may be a better team
after going to the Gillette tournament, but then Spanish Fork may
not be a great barometer. The Dons are 2-9 so far this season.
Next: Brighton travels to play 5A power Lone Peak today (Jan. 9).
Spanish Fork opens Region 4 play at Lone Peak Jan. 14.

Dec. 31 - Bishop Gorman, Nev. 66, Brighton 65
Story of the game: Shabazz Muhammad scored on a layup with 12
seconds left and that proved to be the winning basket in Bishop
Gorman's win over Brighton in the third-place game at the Energy
Classic in Gillette, Wyo.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals actually led most of the
game. Corbin Miller found his shooting stroke with 22 points,
including four three-pointers. Moses Lotulelei had 14.
Bishop Gorman's best moment: Kylel Coleman had 22 points for
the Gaels. Anson Winder added 11 points and Muhammad 10.
Statistical notes: Brighton had a shot to win at the buzzer, but
missed. Sam Wunderli had just six points. Chadron (Neb.)
defeated Gillette 77-72 win the tourney title. Chadron is unbeaten
and has a 6-11 center.
What we learned from this game: The Bengals played in three
close games in this tournament. On the final day, the temperature
plunged to near-zero outside, and that seemed to affect a lot of the
teams.
Next: Brighton returns home to play Spanish Fork at home Jan. 8.
Links: There was no report by the Gillette newspaper, but the Las
Vegas Review-Journal had a small story. To read it, click here. To

Dec. 30 - Gillette, Wyo. 95, Brighton 87
Story of the game: Taran Brown scored 18 points and Garrett
Heusinkveld had 17 and Gillette hit its free throws in the final
quarter to lift the home team into the Energy Classic championship
game with a win over Brighton.
Brighton's best moment: This game was run-and-gun, and
Bengals did it well. Brighton shot 53 percent from the field and
made all of its free throws. Sam Wunderli led with 22 points and
Will Cannon had another good game with 18.
Gillette's best moment: The Camels had a big home crowd, and it
provided a lot of momentum. Gillette trailed 60-52, then went on a
15-0 run that gave it the lead. Gillette forced 17 Brighton turnovers
and a had big foul advantage.
Statistical notes: Brighton had 21 fouls; Gillette 13. Gillette hit 9-18
three-pointers; Brighton was 7-17. The Bengals were credited with

Centennial (Ore.) 68; Bismarck (N.D.) 54, Prairie (Wash.) 48, and
Chadron (Neb.) 55, Bishop Gorman (Nev.) 42.
What we learned from this game: Playing at Gillette is a tough
place to win. Brighton is learning to play at a faster pace, but the
defense needs to improve.
Next: Brighton will play Bishop Gorman, Nev. for third place in the
tournament. Gillette advances to take on Chadron (Neb.) for the title.

Dec. 29 - Brighton 83, Bismarck, N.D. 81
Story of the game: Moses Lotulelei rebounded Corbin Miller's shot
and put it in the basket just before the final buzzer sounded to lift
Brighton to an exciting win over Bismarck, N.D. on the first day of the
Energy Classic in Gillette, Wyo.
Brighton's best moment: The game was close all the way,
although Brighton usually had a small lead. The Bengals endured a
wild fourth quarter that wasn't decided until Lotulelei's rebound
basket. Brighton had a 35-22 rebound advantage in the game.
Bismarck's best moment: Esley Thorton scored 22 points, and it
was his fourth three-pointer with six seconds left that knotted the
score. Jalen Finley added 19 points and Caley Fox 17.

Brighton. Sam Wunderli had 14 points and seven rebounds.

win for Brighton, which got balanced scoring a fine rebounding
effort in a fast-paced contest.
Next: Brighton advances to play the home team - Gillette - in a
tourney semifinal today (Dec. 30). Bismarck will take on Prairie
(Wash.)

Dec. 19 - Brighton 75, Judge Memorial 70
Story of the game: Corbin Miller and Will Cannon provided a great
1-2 punch from the outside, scoring 23 and 17 points, as Brighton
rallied to beat Judge Memorial in a non-region game.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed 22-12 after the first
quarter, but then started a rally that lasted the rest of the game.
Miller and Cannon's output were both season highs. Brighton
scored 26 points in the third quarter.
Judge's best moment: Judge got off to a big lead, which had to
thrill the home crowd. Stallon Saldivar had 22 points, Dee Crandall
16 and Oliver Hughes 15.
Statistical notes: The 75 points was Brighton's high, and the most
Judge has given up, this season. Sam Wunderli and Xan Ricketts
had 12 apiece for Brighton. Miller and Cannon each had three treys.
What we learned from this game: This was the Bengals' second
straight win. Brighton now has momentum going into the
Christmas break.
Next: Brighton travels to Gillette, Wyo., to play in a tournament there
Dec. 29-31. Judge goes to Taylorsville Dec. 23.

Dec. 18 - Brighton 52, Clearfield 46
Story of the game: Corbin Miller scored 21 points as Brighton
rocketed to a big first-half lead and held off previously unbeaten
Clearfield in a non-region road game.
Brighton's best moment: Brighton led 15-8 after the first quarter
and 30-15 at halftime. Unlike previous game, the Bengals held the
lead, although the third quarter was difficult. Xan Ricketts and
Moses Lotulelei added eight each for Brighton.
Clearfield's best moment: Jordan Hansen had 15 and Alex Nelson
13 for Clearfield. The Falcons figured something out at halftime
because they controlled the third quarter, outscoring Brighton 16-9
and getting to within eight points.
Statistical notes: Miller had three treys. Again, he was the only
player to hit from the perimeter. Brighton was 7-17 from the
free-throw line, which isn't very good when you're trying to hold a
lead.
What we learned from this game: This was a signature win for
Brighton, and much needed. The Bengals don't have an easy
schedule and need to get another victory tonight.
Next: Brighton goes back-to-back and plays at Judge Memorial
tonight (Dec. 19). Clearfield goes to West on Dec. 30.

Dec. 12 - West Jordan 58, Brighton 49
Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 21 points and Weirick
and D.J. Tialavea controlled the rebounds in the second half as
West Jordan rallied with a huge third quarter to down Brighton in a
non-region game.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals were at their best in the first
quarter, racing to an 18-10 lead. Their passes were sharp, which
led to easy baskets. Corbin Miller also nailed three treys. They
looked sharp.
West Jordan's best moment: The third quarter belonged to the
Jags. Trailing 33-25, they rallied immediately. Reyes Gallegos
played big roles on offense and defense. They hit 10-14 shots
during that span and looked like a championship team.
Statistical notes: It was a tale of two games. Miller was 3-3 from
outside in the first half, then Gallegos' defense pushed him out and
he was just 1-5 after that. Tialavea had nine rebounds, while
Weirick had eight. Sam Wunderli played well for Brighton with 15
points and nine rebounds.
What we learned from this game: Brighton could have won this
game. The Bengals saw their potential in the first half. They had the
No. 1 team on their heels. Brighton needs someone to set good
screens for Miller on the perimeter.
Next: Brighton returns home to take on Highland next Wednesday
(Dec. 17). West Jordan plays host to Skyline the night before (Dec.
16).

Dec. 9 - Riverton 49, Brighton 46
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 18 points and Riverton shook
off a poor free-throw shooting night and managed to hold off
Brighton in the Bengals' gym.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals were down 24-18 at
halftime, but rallied in the third quarter to make this a game again.
Corbin Miller led the way with 17 points, including a pair of
three-pointers.
Riverton's best moment: After three "comfortable" wins, this
marked the first time the Silverwolves had to play a close game,
and they passed the test.
Statistical notes: After Friel, no other Riverton player was in double
figures. Sam Wunderli added 11 for Brighton, which shot a
respectable 8-11 from the line.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game, but
the Bengals came up short. The opportunities were there for the
home team, too.
Next: Brighton goes on the road to play West Jordan on Friday (Dec.
12). Riverton plays at Weber the same night.

Dec. 5 - Brighton 73, Layton 61
Story of the game: Corbin Miller scored 19 points and led four
players in double figures as Brighton got its offense going and
handed Layton a loss in the Lancers' season-opening game.
Brighton's best moment: The Miners had a 61-46 lead after three
quarters, which is great offensive output. Miller nailed four treys and
Xan Ricketts, Sam Wunderli and Will Cannon also got involved.
This was a big change from Brighton's first game.
Layton's best moment: The Lancers tried to stay with the home
team, and actually narrowed the gap in the fourth quarter. Taylor
Butler led Layton with 20 points, while Tanner Garner put in 17.
Statistical notes: Brighton hit six three-pointers (Miller had four),
which is a lot more than the first game. Ten days of practice helps
after a sorry taste of defeat.
What we learned from this game: In the opener, Bountiful focused
on Miller and frustrated him. This time, other players came through
and Layton had to extend its defense to try to cover them all.
Next: Brighton has another home game, this time against unbeaten
Riverton on Dec. 9. Layton returns home to take on Olympus the
same night.

Nov. 25 - Bountiful 61, Brighton 49
Story of the game: Christian Taylor scored 14 points, while
teammates Travis Parrish and A.C. Seljaas added 10 apiece as
Bountiful pulled away early in the second half and claimed a
season-opening road win at Brighton.
Brighton's best moment: Sophomore Corbin Miller gave Brighton
the lead early with a three-pointer, and the Bengals held a 15-12
advantage after the first quarter. After that, Bountiful's experience
probably came through.
Bountiful's best moment: Bountiful had three returning starters.
Brighton had none. Leading 25-22 at halftime, Bountiful went on a
9-2 run to start the third quarter, and Brighton was never able to
come within six points the rest of the game.
Statistical notes: Brighton hit just 13-of-48 shots for the game and
was 21-29 from the free-throw line. Miller was the only player in
double figures with 12. Bountiful was 21-49 from the field and 16-25
from the line. Seljaas had three treys.
What we learned from this game: After Miller hit his first of two
treys, he was held in the check the rest of the game. Unless
someone else steps up, Miller is going to get double-teamed.
Next: Brighton takes on highly touted Layton at home on Dec. 5.
Bountiful will play at defending 4-A champ Lone Peak Dec. 3.
