Oct. 27 - Jordan 35, Brighton 30
Story of the game - QB Alex Hart and WR Braden Hammond
teamed up for four touchdown passes, but it was Jordan's defense
that stole the show as the Beetdiggers beat Brighton again and
advanced into the 5A playoffs.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals seemed ready to play this
time. Ricky Heimuli played, and made a big difference on the line.
Stephen Robinson returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a
touchdown and Zane Smith caught a 65-yard TD pass from Jace
Felix.
Jordan's best moment - Trailing 7-0, Hart led Jordan to three
straight touchdown drives. He methodically moved the team
downfield with short passes, then surprised Brighton with a nice
touch on fly patterns down the sidelines. Bill Vavau made a nice
play returning a blocked punt, and Grant Gary returned a fumble for
a score.
What we learned from this game - Jordan won the game, and
deserved it. Brighton was known for its defense, but Jordan's
defense was the difference in this game.
Next - Brighton is done for the season. Jordan advanced to play
Bingham in the 5A playoffs.

I was there, too. To read the Deseret News story, click here. To view
the Salt Lake Tribune article, click here. To read my game blog, click

Oct. 23 - Jordan 28, Brighton 20
Story of the game - QB Alex Hart threw for 328 yards, and Jordan
took advantage of a muffed punt in the fourth quarter to beat
Brighton and force a tiebreaker to decide the No. 4 seed in the
region.
Brighton's best moment - After Jordan went ahead 7-0, Brighton
pulled a reverse on the kickoff and Sosaia TaKai ran 90 yards for a
touchdown to tie the game. The Bengals' offense only had one first
down in the opening half, so this play kept them in the game.
Jordan's best moment - The Beetdiggers have been all about
offense all season, but the defense came to play tonight. They
constantly stuffed Brighton on the line. Two of Brighton's three
touchdowns came on big plays.
What we learned from this game - Coach Ryan Bullett said flatly
that his team was not inspired to play this game, and it showed.
Ricky Heimuli was also held out due to injury, and that made a
difference.
Next - Brighton and Jordan will play again Tuesday at 5 p.m. at
Hillcrest High. The winner will take on Bingham next Saturday in the
5A playoffs.

Oct. 14 - Brighton 35, American Fork 12
Story of the game - Stephen Robinson had his best game of the
season, catching two touchdown passes on offense, and returning
an interception 72 yards on defense, as Brighton belted American
Fork in a Region 4 game.
Brighton's best moment - Brighton led 14-0 at halftime, thanks to a
3-yard run by RB Sosaia TaKai and a 58-yard TD pass from QB
Derek Newell to Robinson with less than a minute left. Newell
added a 5-yard scoring run at the start of the third quarter and
Brighton had a big lead.
American Fork's best moment - QB Chase Hansen connected
with Cade Zarbock a couple of times for American Fork's scores.
Hansen threw for 184 yards, but AF had trouble running on the
Bengals.
What we learned from this game - Newell had a great game,
completing 8 of 10 passes for 243 yards. TaKai finished with 112
yards on 19 carries. WR Jace Felix also had a good game with
three catches for 103 yards.
Next - Brighton plays host to Jordan. American Fork travels to
Hillcrest.

game. To read the Herald story, click here. To view the D-News
article, click here. To see the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click here.
Oct. 9 - Pleasant Grove 12, Brighton 7
Story of the game - Jeff Harris scored on a 7-yard run with 10
minutes left, and the Pleasant Grove defense did the rest, putting
away Brighton and keeping the Vikings undefeated and in first place
of Region 4.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals scored first, and led most
of the game, thanks to a 71-yard pass from QB Derek Newell to
Zane Smith. However, Brighton was unable to do anything after that,
and mustered only 62 yards additional offense.
PG's best moment - The Vikings rallied later in the first quarter and
scored on a 15-yard pass from Dallas Lloyd to D.J. Doman. PG's
highlight was its defense after that, constantly harassing Brighton
and preventing the Bengals from any further scores.
What we learned from this game - Brighton has a great defense,
but apparently not quite enough offense to be considered a 5A
championship contender. The Bengals sacked Lloyd five times and
had two interceptions.
Next - Brighton travels to American Fork. Pleasant Grove goes to
Lone Peak.

Salt Lake papers sent photographers. To read the Deseret News

Sept. 30 - Brighton 49, Hillcrest 10
Story of the game - Sosaia TaKai ran for 162 yards and caught an
80-yard touchdown pass from QB Derek Newell as Brighton rallied
from an early deficit and blew past Hillcrest in a Region 4 game.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals trailed 10-0, and then
dominated the Huskies defensively. Brett Grant had a pair of pass
interceptions. Newell had a couple of short TD runs as Brighton led
28-10 at halftime.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies got off to a fast start. QB
Tanner Kemp hit Matt Pecht on an 80-yard TD pass to get things
started, and Hillcrest added a 28-yard field goal by Jeff Brown.
What we learned from this game - Brighton could have been
looking past this game, but rebounded quickly. Chris Finau had one
carry, a 50-yard TD run. The Bengals' defense also forced Kemp
into a bad night passing.
Next - Brighton plays host to Pleasant Grove. Hillcrest has its
homecoming game against Kearns.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Sept. 18 - Brighton 21, Alta 10
Story of the game - RB Sosaia TaKai ran for 160 yards and
Brighton's defense forced three turnovers, and stopped the Hawks
twice on fourth down, en route to a Region 4 win that ended a
five-game losing streak in the series.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals' defense, led by Ricky
Heimuli, was on the field a lot in the second half, and came up with
stops every time. Soph QB Andy Jones scored on an 8-yard keeper
to give Brighton a 21-10 lead, and the offense held on to the ball the
last six minutes of the game.
Alta's best moment - The Hawks moved the football, especially in
the first half, but hurt themselves with a pair of fumbles. Going
against the wind in the second quarter, QB Jordan Brown hit Zach
Liston on a 35-yard touchdown pass that cut the margin to 14-10.
What we learned from this game - This region is tough, and
showed that any team can be beaten. TaKai impressed a lot of
people, and showed a great stiff-arm ability.
Next - Brighton is off until Sept. 30, when it plays at Hillcrest. Alta
has a home game against Lone Peak.

I was there, too. To read the Deseret News story, click here. To view

Sept. 11 - Lone Peak 23, Brighton 7
Story of the game - Kyson Flake scored two touchdowns, including
a 21-yard pass interception return in the first first half, as Lone
Peak's defense showed Brighton it was just as impressive and
ended the Bengals' win streak.
Brighton's best moment - After trailing 13-0 at halftime, Brighton
held Lone Peak without a first down in the third quarter, but couldn't
muster a rally until later. QB Derek Newell hit Thomas Thorup on a
36-yard TD pass. Sosaia TaKai had 101 yards rushing.
Lone Peak's best moment - This was Lone Peak's homecoming
game, and the Knights were also fired up to show they had a
decent defense, too. They gave up almost 400 yards, but only let
Brighton score once.
What we learned from this game - The Bengals now have been
scored upon, so perhaps they can just concentrate on winning.
They can't afford another loss. We'll know soon if this team is for
real.
Next - Brighton plays Alta in its homecoming game. Lone Peak
travels to Hillcrest.

game and the D-News sent a photographer. To read the D-News

Sept. 4 - Brighton 31, Hunter 0
Story of the game - Sophomore QB Andy Jones passed for 167
yards and two touchdowns, and Sosaia TaKai had a good night
rushing but, once again, Brighton's defense stole the show with
another dominating performance.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals' physical defense set the
tone for the game, limiting Hunter to less than 50 yards of offense. It
took a while for Brighton to wear down its opponents. It led just 10-0
at halftime.
Hunter's best moment - In the first half, the Wolverines matched
Brighton's physical play and it was still a game. But Hunter's
offense has not reached its peak and has only scored three points
the last two games.
What we learned from this game - Brighton has outscored its
opponents 110-0 after three games and has been noticed.
Because of that, its opponents won't classify the Bengals as an
automatic win. After being down for a few years, Brighton is back.
Next - Brighton opens the Region 4 season at Lone Peak. Hunter
starts Region 2 action at West.

News story, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune article, click

Aug. 28 - Brighton 55, Taylorsville 0
Story of the game - Darren Later rushed for 144 yards and Sosaia
TaKai added 94, but the real story was Brighton's defense, which
showed last week was no fluke and held its opponent scoreless for
the second straight game.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals' line play was outstanding,
as Taylorsville was never able to mount a drive, and finished with
zero yards passing (no completions). Brighton had 355 yards
rushing.
Taylorsville's best moment - Before and after the game. Certainly
not during it. This was a learning experience for the Warriors, who
learned how far they have to go to compete.
What we learned from this game - Brighton grabbed some
attention with its shutout win over Davis, but this only amplifies it.
This team has come a long way since last season, but it will need
to in order to compete in its new region.
Next - Brighton travels to play Hunter in its last non-region game.
Taylorsville travels to Murray.

the game. To read the Trib's article, click here. To view the Deseret
News brief, click here. To see the Trib's photo gallery, click here.
Aug. 21 - Brighton 24, Davis 0
Story of the game - Derek Newell and Darren Later led the offense,
and the Brighton defense intercepted three Davis passes and went
on to post an impressive non-region win over the Darts in the
season opener for both teams.
Brighton's best moment - After a slow start, the Bengals
dominated the second quarter and led 17-0 at halftime. Later
scored a touchdown on a 34-yard run, then Newell hit Zane Smith
for a score. After an interception, Anthony Mares nailed a field goal
for the big halftime advantage.
Davis' best moment - The Darts were bottled up, and had few
bright points. RB Tanner Hinds was a workhorse, but never broke
free, and QB Gavin Fowler had a tough day. It was a lot different
than last year's opener, when Fowler made headlines.
What we learned from this game - A great win for Brighton, and a
confidence-builder. The Bengals have been down for a few years,
but this could be the year they show marked improvement and even
challenge.
Next - Brighton travels to play Taylorsville. Davis starts its region
season with a game at Clearfield.

game. To read the D-News story, click here. To view the Salt Lake
Tribune's brief, click here. To check out the D-News photo gallery,
