Feb. 23 - Weber 39, Brighton 36

Story of the game: Katie Wahlen scored 14 points and Shay
Sorensen had 13 points and 15 rebounds as Weber blew past
Brighton with a big third quarter and eliminated the Bengals from
the 5A state tournament.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals held a 15-13 halftime lead
on the strength of their defense, which held Weber to two points in
the second quarter. Brighton also rallied in the fourth quarter,
scoring 19 of its 36 points in that span, but fell short.

Weber's best moment: The Warriors shot much better than
Brighton, and came out smoking after halftime, outscoring the
Bengals 13-2 in the third quarter to take a 26-17 lead. The Warriors
canned three treys, while Brighton had none.

Statistical notes: Brighton was the only No. 1 seed to be eliminated
in the first round. Weber advanced to play Bingham in the
quarterfinals. Katie Tominaga led Brighton with 13 points, while
Kylie Hirschi had nine.

What we learned from this game: The Bengals won their region
and improved dramatically from the previous year. All Region 2

second-half points, so they were never threatened. Brighton was
able to empty its bench.

just slowly extended the lead. Brighton made enough of its free
throws in the fourth quarter to hang on.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles tried to rally, but never
mounted a serious threat. One game after scoring a season-high
78 points, they score their season low.

Statistical notes: Brighton held Skyline to just two points in the
second quarter. Skyline was 1-4 from the free-throw line; Brighton
was 15-28. Hannah Bezdjian led Skyline with 11 points.

quarter. After Hillcrest rallied, Brighton did it again in the third period
and put the game away. Katie Tominaga added 16 points for
Brighton.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies got off to slow starts in the
first and third quarters, but played well outside of that. Hillcrest also
had trouble with its three-point shooting. Lexi Amundsen led with 15
points.

Statistical notes: Hillcrest gave up 60+ points for the second
straight game. Both teams shot about 50 percent from the

offense. Not many fouls were called in this game as Brighton was
2-4 from the free-throw line, and Jordan 4-7.

and scored more than half of their 32 points. They once trailed
22-11, but came back to cut the margin to 27-26. Hannah Benzdjian
was the leading scorer with 10 points.

Statistical notes: Brighton was 8-12 from the free-throw line, while
Skyline was 7-16. The loss ended Skyline's six-game win streak.

Lo'amanu led Taylorsville with 15 points. Saane Lo'amanu had 11.

Tominaga had 16 points to lead Brighton.

Rachel Gines and Nicole Newbold had eight points each for
Bingham. Kim Ringwood scored 11 for Brighton.

What we learned from this game: The loss was Brighton's third

Dec. 30 - Davis 55, Brighton 52

Story of the game: Ali Blake scored 16 points, including a steal and
layup in the final minute of the game, that ended up being the play
in Davis' non-region win over Brighton.

Brighton's best moment: The game was close all the way, but it
turned into a track meet during the second quarter, when 53 points
were scored. Katie Tominaga had a three-pointer with 1:28 left that
gave Brighton the lead, but it wasn't enough.

Davis' best moment: The game was full of defense, except for the
second quarter. It wasn't decided until Blake's basket with 21.8
seconds left. Brighton had a chance to win, but couldn't get a good
shot.

Statistical notes: Brighton hit only 6 of 18 free throws. Davis was
13-22. Shelbi Everett led the Bengals with 15 points. Tominaga had
14. McKenzie Garrett had 12 for the Darts.

What we learned from this game: Both teams are at .500 with
region play just around the corner. A region title isn't likely for either,
but a state tourney berth could happen.

Next: Brighton plays host to 5A power Bingham (again) on Jan. 6.
Davis goes to Weber the same night.

Dec. 18 - Bingham 39, Brighton 34

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie scored eight points, and Rachel
Gines had seven points and pulled down eight rebounds and
Bingham narrowly escaped its first loss was a non-region win over
Brighton.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals fell to 5-4, but gave it their
best shot. Katie Tominaga led Brighton with 11 points. The longer
they stayed in the game, the more they felt like they could compete.

Bingham's best moment: This was a close one. Bingham led most
of the game, but couldn't put the visitors away. The Miners were
ahead 29-22 and had to repulse Brighton's upset bid in the fourth
quarter.

Statistical notes: The 39 points tied a season low for Bingham on
offense. Taeja Afalava had seven points, but only seven players
scored for Bingham as the team couldn't empty the bench. The loss
ended Brighton's two-game win streak.

What we learned from this game: This was the last game before
Christmas break, and that might have made it more difficult to
concentrate on the game. Bingham can't afford an off night.

Next: Brighton is off until Dec. 30, when it plays at Davis. Bingham
plays Layton at home Dec. 31.

Brighton's best moment: Copper Hills was no match for the
Bengals, who led 14-2 after the first quarter, 28-6 at halftime and
43-11 after three quarters. Katie Tominaga was Brighton's
second-leading scorer with nine points.

Copper Hills' best moment: Twenty points aren't going to win many
games and is a season low for the Grizzlies. Ironically, nobody
scored more than one basket for the team.

Statistical notes: The Bengals had three treys, each by a different
player. This was the first game where Brighton could empty its
bench since the season opener against Viewmont.

What we learned from this game: This was a good
confidence-booster for the Bengals after suffering three straight
losses. It also was a road win.

the win. They kept Brighton at bay with a 20-point fourth quarter.

Statistical notes: Shelbi Everett had three treys for Brighton. The
Bengals also hit 17-29 free throws. In Brighton's last three losses,
the Bengals fell way behind in the first quarter.

outscored Lone Peak 19-10 in the third quarter to make this a
game. Kylie Hirschi was the top scorer for the third straight game
with 12 points.

Dec. 5 - American Fork 65, Brighton 36

Story of the game: Haley Holmstead scored 27 points and Kaycee
Mansfield added 20 as American Fork blew out Brighton in the first
half and coasted to a non-region win.

Brighton's best moment: Brighton played AF close to even in the
second half, when the game was already out of reach. Kylie Hirschi
led the Bengals with 12 points.

American Fork's best moment: The Bengals had no answer to
Holmstead and Mansfield. AF led 21-9 after one quarter and 41-18
at halftime. The Cavemen were able to empty the bench later.

Statistical notes: The 36 points were a season low, so AF's big
girls were making a different defensively, too. AF was 12-20 from
the free-throw line; Brighton was 4-8.

What we learned from this game: This was Brighton's first road
game, and the Bengals didn't handle it well. Of course, American
Fork is a good team, too. Brighton knows how much it needs to
improve to be among 5A's elite.

Dec. 4 - Brighton 47, Clearfield 44 (OT)

Story of the game: Kylie Hirschi scored a season-high 14 points as
Brighton nearly gave the game away in the fourth quarter, but came
back to beat Clearfield in a non-region game.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals led most of the game, but
scored just two points in the final period. It would have been easy to
give up, but they outscored the Falcons 6-3 in the extra session.

Clearfield's best moment: You have to credit Clearfield's
fourth-quarter defense. Clearfield trailed 28-18 at halftime.
Mackenzie Day scored a game-high 17 points for the Falcons.

Statistical notes: Part of Brighton's problem was the fact it shot
14-29 from the free-throw line. Shelbi Everett had 10 points for
Brighton.

What we learned from this game: The Bengals almost gave this
one away, but they didn't and now they have a 3-0 record. Who
knows? Maybe they learned something from this game.

Next: Brighton travels to play 5A power American Fork today (Dec.
5). Clearfield has a home game against Woods Cross Dec. 9.

boards). Jennifer Hamson also had 17 points. Nobody else scored
more than three points.

Statistical notes: The Bengals got three-point baskets from three
different players. Brighton was 8-16 from the free-throw line. PG
was 8-18. PG fell to 0-2 with the loss.

What we learned from this game: A second straight win to open
the season. That's good for the team's confidence, especially with
consecutive games coming up against some of the more-talented
Utah County schools.

Next: Brighton takes on Clearfield at home on Dec. 4. Pleasant
Grove has Orem at home Dec. 9.

Nov. 26 - Brighton 69, Viewmont 31

Story of the game: Kim Ringwood, Kylie Hirschi and Shelbi Everett
scored 15 points apiece as Brighton ran away from Viewmont in the
second half and claimed a season-opening victory.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals led 30-17 at halftime, then
turned on the offense and made the game a rout. The second half
really belonged to Brighton as it outscored Viewmont 39-14.

Viewmont's best moment: The Vikings' first game didn't go so well.
Nothing really stood out. Viewmont seemed to give up when the
score got out of reach.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot below average from the
free-throw line. Brighton was 13-23 and Viewmont 6-14.

What we learned from this game: A good season-opening win for
Brighton, and good for the team's confidence. Last year, the team
lost its first four games.

Next: Brighton takes on Pleasant Grove at home Dec. 2. Viewmont
travels to
Granger Dec. 3.
