Brighton 1, Viewmont 0 (OT)
Oct. 22 - Brighton 1, Viewmont 0 (OT)

Story of the game - McKenna Kimball's goal in the second overtime
was the only score of the match, and that enabled Brighton to edge
Viewmont and win the 5A girls state soccer championship at Rio
Tinto Stadium.

Brighton's highlights - The match seemed headed for a shootout
until Kimball's shot went in and send the Brighton sideline into
pandemonium. Kimball scored just four goals all year. Brighton got
its seventh shutout win in the last eight games.

Viewmont's highlights - The Vikings played tough defense on
Brighton's Stephanie Verdoia and almost won it, despite barely
making the postseason. Viewmont almost won it a few minutes
earlier but Ali Forsberg's shot was pushed away by Brighton
goalkeeper Natalie Stoven.

What we learned from this game - This was a great match decided
by defense and gave Brighton its sixth girls state soccer title and first
since 2005.

Next - Both teams ended their season since this was the title
contest.

Oct. 19 - Brighton 3, Davis 0

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia buried three goals - her third
hat trick this season - and the Bengals' defense shut out another
opponent - en route to a convincing win in the semifinals of the 5A
state tournament.

Brighton's highlights - Verdoia scored her first goal just three
minutes into the match, and the score stayed 1-0 at intermission.
She added her second goal midway through the second half and
then finished it off just before the end.

Davis' highlights - The Darts were the Region 1 champion and had
a 17-1 record entering the game. Erin Swenson, Katelyn McLeod,
Kendra Bailey and Kenzie Harrison each had shot attempts that
missed.
A week after the game, the Salt Lake Tribune printed a nice
recap of the Darts' season.

What we learned from this game - The Bengals reached the
championship game for the second time in three seasons, and are
doing with Verdoia's offense and a lot of team defense.

Next - Brighton plays Viewmont 22 at Rio Tinto Stadium for the 5A
title. Davis finished the year with a 17-2 record.

Oct. 14 - Brighton 3, Bingham 0

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia scored twice and Brighton's
defense showed its recent improvement, recording its fifth shutout in
the last six games, in beating Bingham in a 5A tournament
quarterfinal game.

Brighton's highlights - The Bengals led 1-0 at intermission, and
then Myers and Verdoia scored again later to send Brighton to the 5A
semifinals. The Bengals were anxious about this match because
the quarters is where they lost last year.

Bingham's highlights - The Miners played Brighton tough earlier,
and Liz Christensen had a couple of scoring chances here.
Bingham finished the season 11-5-1.

What we learned from this game - With Alta out of the way, the
pressure is really on Brighton to win it all, and the Bengals fared
well. The defense has really come on lately.

Next - Brighton plays Davis Oct. 19 at Juan Diego's field. Bingham is
done for the season.

Oct. 12 - Brighton 2, Layton 0

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia and Lindsay Castleton
scored goals as Brighton downed Layton in the first round of the 5A
state tournament.

Brighton's highlights - Playing at home, the Bengals got off to a slow
start, but Verdoia's goal midway through the first half seemed to give
the team momentum. Castleton scored early in the second half and
Brighton never felt threatened.

Layton's highlights - The Lancers didn't threaten Brighton
goalkeeper Natalie Stoven often. They passed the ball well, but the
shots they did get weren't high-percentage shots. Abbey Kennedy
saved a goal when she sneaked behind her keeper and stopped a
shot that would have made the score 3-0.

What we learned from this game - Brighton escaped, and did not
realize it until afterward, when the Bengals found out that every other
Region 1 team had defeated their Region 4 opponent, which also
meant Alta lost. Finishing first in Region 4 paid big dividends here.

Next - Brighton advanced to the quarterfinals, and will have a home
match against Bingham Oct. 14.

Oct. 7 - Brighton 4, Hillcrest 1

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia, Sass Kellogg, McKenna
Kimball and Jocelyn Loomis each scored second-half goals as
Brighton pulled away from Hillcrest and captured the Region 4 title.

Brighton's highlights - All of the Bengals' success came in the
second half, and the final moments saw tears of joy as they stayed
undefeated and earned the region trophy on their home field.

Hillcrest's highlights - The Huskies played tough once again and
had Brighton worried for quite a while. Hillcrest finished the year
5-10 and missed the playoffs, so this was its final game of the
season.

What we learned from this game - There was a lot of relief shown
following this match as Brighton finally secured one of its
season-long goals. The next step is the state tournament and
nemesis Alta will be on the other side of the bracket.

Next - Brighton will play host to Layton in the 5A tourney's first round
Oct. 12. Hillcrest was done for the year.

Oct. 5 - Brighton 1, Jordan 0

Story of the game - Jocelyn Loomis scored just her second goal all
season, and Natalie Stoven came up with a couple of big saves near
the end of the game to secure Brighton's Region 4 win over Jordan.

Brighton's highlights - The teams were tied 0-0 at intermission,
which set up an exciting end to this match. The win secured at least
a tie for the region title for the Bengals.

Jordan's highlights - Next to Alta, Jordan gave Brighton its best
matches of the region season. The Diggers have hopes for a playoff
berth, and played with a lot of energy.

What we learned from this game - Brighton avoided another upset
with this close win and the Bengals are excited to have a chance at a
region title, which was one of their goals for the season.

Next - Brighton finishes its regular season with a home game
against Hillcrest Oct. 7. Jordan has a home match against American
Fork the same day.

the Deseret News brief,

Sept. 30 - Brighton 5, American Fork 0

Story of the game - Sydney Myers had her best match of the season,
scoring three times, and Stephanie Verdoia added two goals as
Brighton broke open a close game in the second half and claimed
the Region 4 win.

Brighton's highlights - The Bengals held possession of the ball
most of the game, but only Verdoia could score in the first half. Later,
Brighton pushed across three goals in less than 10 minutes to
break the match open. Goalkeepers Natalie Stoven and Tamara
Braun combined for the shutout.

American Fork's highlights - Cavemen coach Becca Murdock
praised her team for keeping the game close in the first half. She
was particularly impressed with her keeper, Mackenzie Empey, who
was busy the whole afternoon.

What we learned from this game - Brighton recorded its second
straight shutout and biggest (five goals) win of the season.

Next - Brighton has a home match against Jordan Oct. 5. AF plays
host to Hillcrest the same day.

Sept. 28 - Brighton 4, Pleasant Grove 0

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia had her second hat trick this
season, and Audrey Guzy scored for the first time to lead Brighton
past Pleasant Grove in a Region 4 game.

Brighton's highlights - Verdoia put the Bengals on her back and put
this game away early. Brighton led 3-0 at halftime and coach Vance
emptied her bench. Natalie Stoven, Tamaryn Braun and Emma
Eckstrom each had time in goal and combined for the shutout.

PG's highlights - Goals have been hard to come by in region and PG
was silenced again. The Vikings won just one region game all year
and averaged 1.1 goals per game.

What we learned from this game - This is the "easier" part of
Brighton's schedule and the Bengals are the state's top team after
beating Alta. They have a target on their backs but are handling it
well.

Next - Brighton finished the regular season with three straight home
games, starting Sept. 30 against American Fork. PG goes to Jordan
the same day.

Sept. 21 - Brighton 2, Lone Peak 1

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia and Jocelyn Loomis scored
second-half goals as Brighton rallied to defeat Lone Peak and stay
undefeated on the season.

Brighton's highlights - The score was 0-0 at intermission, and then
Lone Peak got the home crowd excited by scoring first. That seemed
to ignite the Bengals, who got a goal by Verdoia three minutes later.
Midway through the half, Loomis rebounded Verdoia's shot for the
lead.

Lone Peak's highlights - Makenzie Lundquist turned away a lot of
first-half shots, and then McKenna Fox's header off Allie Hale's long
shot put the Knights in the lead. Lone Peak had several attempts
late in the match, but couldn't score.

What we learned from this game - After losing 3-0 at Brighton
earlier this season, Lone Peak believed it had improved enough to
win this match. Brighton didn't let it get away.

Next - Brighton has a week off before playing at Pleasant Grove.
Lone Peak goes to Jordan Sept. 23.

Sept. 16 - Brighton 3, Alta 2

Story of the game - Sydney Myers' first goal of her Brighton career
couldn't have come at a better time. It was the winning shot that
carried Brighton to an overtime win over Alta and propelled the
Bengals into first place in Region 4.

Brighton's highlights - Myers took a pass from Stephanie Verdoia
and nailed the shot (something she did in practice frequently).
Verdoia and Amanda Jensen had scored for the Bengals earlier, but
Alta rallied to send the match into overtime.

Alta's highlights - Kim Thurman gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead on their
home field, and then Megan Lloyd added another score that tied the
match. Alta suffered its first loss of the season.

What we learned from this game - The 2-2 tie between these
teams last month was disappointing for each of them, so at least
this had an outcome. Don't be surprised if they meet again later.

Next - Brighton plays at Lone Peak Sept. 21. Alta takes on
Montgomery, Calif., in a home match over the weekend.

Links - Both Salt Lake newspapers had reporters at this game. To

unavailable online.

Sept. 14 - Brighton 1, Hillcrest 0

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia scored the game's only goal
and helped Brighton escape Hillcrest's upset bid with a Region 4
victory.

Brighton's highlights - After a scoreless first half, Verdoia gave
Brighton the lead. Natalie Stoven picked up the team's third straight
shutout, and fourth already this season.

Hillcrest's highlights - The Huskies lost their fourth straight, but may
have picked up some confidence by giving Brighton won its toughest
games so far this year.

What we learned from this game - Brighton have have been looking
forward to its next game - a rematch at Alta. The Bengals and Hawks
are undefeated and still tied for first place in region.

Next - Brighton travels to Alta Sept. 16 in what might be the game of
the year. Hillcrest goes to Jordan.

Links - There was no local media coverage of this match. For the
Deseret News brief,

Sept. 10 - Brighton 2, Jordan 0

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia and Courtney Shill each
scored a goal, and Natalie Stoven recorded the team's
second-straight shutout as Brighton held off Jordan in a Region 4
game.

Brighton's highlights - Verdoia's score gave Brighton a 1-0 lead at
intermission, and Shill helped give the Bengals some breathing
room. This was a close match, unlike the previous two games.

Jordan's highlights - The Beetdiggers scored six goals against
Pleasant Grove two days earlier, but couldn't find the net this time.

What we learned from this game - After giving up two goals in the
second half against PG, the Bengals' defense has stepped up and
silence their last two opponents.

Next - Brighton has a home match against Hillcrest Sept. 14. Jordan
travels to American Fork the same day.

Links - There was no local media coverage of this match. For the
Deseret News brief,

Sept. 8 - Brighton 4, American Fork 0

Story of the game - Kelcie Douglas scored two goals and Sass
Kellogg and Stephanie Verdoia had one each as Brighton blanked
American Fork in a Region 4 game.

Brighton's highlights - The Bengals led 1-0 at intermission but got
hot in the second half and put the game away quickly. Goalkeepers
Natalie Stoven and Tamaryn Braun combined for the team's second
shutout this season.

American Fork's highlights - The Cavemen are in a rebuilding year,
and were pleased to stay with the Bengals in the first half. AF has
some offensive issues, however, and were shut out for the second
straight game.

What we learned from this game - Brighton now appears to be on a
roll. The Bengals remained undefeated and stayed with Alta at the
top of the region standings.

Next - Brighton plays at Jordan on Sept. 10. AF goes to Hillcrest the
same day.

Links - There was no local media coverage of this match. For the

Sept. 2 - Brighton 5, Pleasant Grove 2

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia had a hat trick, scoring three
times and helping Brighton built a big lead, en route to convincing
victory over Pleasant Grove in a Region 4 matchup.

Brighton's highlights - The Bengals led 3-0 at intermission, as
Verdoia, Maddie Adams and Lindsay Castleton helped them tie their
highest offensive output this year.

PG's highlights - The Vikings' came alive in the second half, scoring
both of their goals. PG lost its fourth straight, but can at least claim to
have at least made this a game for a while.

What we learned from this game - Brighton was able to empty its
bench with another nice home win. The offense was more in tune
after a week reprieve from games.

Next - Brighton has another break, going to American Fork on Sept.
8. PG has a home match against Jordan the same day.

Aug. 26 - Brighton 3, Lone Peak 0

Story of the game - Amanda Jensen, Courtney Shill and Stephanie
Verdoia scored goals as Brighton bounced back from its emotional
match against Alta with a shutout win over Lone Peak.

Brighton's highlights - Natalie Stoven earned her first shutout of the
season. The Bengals led 1-0 at intermission, but picked up some
momentum shortly after that and put Lone Peak away.

Lone Peak's highlights - The Knights came into the match on a roll,
with a four-game win streak but were blanked for the first time this
season.

What we learned from this game - Brighton was still battling itself
and its inability to beat Alta two days prior. The Bengals righted the
ship and earned their first region win.

Next - Brighton has a home match against Pleasant Grove Sept. 2.
Lone Peak plays host to Jordan Aug. 31.

Links - There was no local media coverage of this match. For the
Deseret News brief,

Aug. 24 - Brighton 2, Alta 2 (tie)

Story of the game - Sass Kellogg and Stephanie Verdoia scored
goals in an exciting first half, then the defenses dominated, which
resulted in a disappointing tie between Brighton and Alta in their
Regin 4 opener.

Brighton's highlights - Playing on their home field with a good-sized
crowd, the first half was full of big plays. After intermission, Sydney
Myers got a shot past Alta's goalie, but the ball took an odd hope and
went wide of the post.

Alta's highlights - Kim Thurman and Courtney Nance had the
Hawks' goals and, while the team's passing was good, they didn't
get any high-percentage shots on Brighton's goal after intermission.

What we learned from this game - The tie means this matter isn't
settled, and both teams will go on through region tied for first place
until they meet again.

Next - Brighton has a home match against Lone Peak Aug. 26. Alta
takes on American Fork.

the Deseret News sent a photographer. To read the D-News story,

Aug. 19 - Brighton 1, Bingham 1 (tie)

Story of the game - McKenna Kimball and Chantee Renouard had
the game's only goals as Brighton and Bingham battled to a tie in a
non-region game.

Brighton's highlights - Kimball's score came in the second half in
this defensive matchup and was one of the few times the Bengals
were held to a single score. This game would also be precursor of
things to come as both teams made the 5A state tournament.

Bingham's highlights - Renouard was a four-year starter for
Bingham, and this was her first goal of the year. The Miners were
known for their defense throughout the year and recorded eight
shutouts.

What we learned from this game - This was another tough match
for the Bengals, who would later play Bingham again in the state
tournament.
Bingham's new coach also attracted attention in the
local media.

Next - Brighton plays host to defending 5A champ Alta Aug. 24 in its
first Region 4 match. Bingham opens its region play at home the
same day against Taylorsville.

the Deseret News brief,

Aug. 17 - Brighton 3, Juan Diego 1

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia scored twice, and McKenna
Kimball added a key insurance goal late in the match as Brighton
downed Juan Diego in a non-region contest.

Brighton's highlights - Verdoia continued her hot start, scoring her
fourth and fifth goals of the season. The game was tied 1-1 at
intermission, but goalie Natalie Stoven helped keep the Soaring
Eagle scoreless after that.

Juan Diego's highlights - Emily Bruder, who had an amazing 35
goals during the season, got Juan Diego's lone score. The Soaring
Eagle started the year 1-4, playing mostly bigger schools, but came
back to win the 3A state title.

What we learned from this game - This was another difficult
opponent for Brighton, although we didn't know how tough they
would be at the time.

Next - Brighton travels to Bingham Aug. 19. Juan Diego has
Springville at home the same day.

Links - There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief,

Aug. 13 - Brighton 5, Riverton 1

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia and Courtney Shill each had
a pair of goals to help Brighton build a nice lead and beat Riverton in
the Bengals' home opener.

Brighton's highlights - The Bengals led 2-0 at intermission and then
extended the margin. The team's five goals would eventually tie for
its season high during the season. McKenna Kimball added
Brighton's other score.

Riverton's highlights - Baileigh Petty had Riverton's lone score. She
scored just once all last year, but finished this season with five.
Riverton fell to Alta in its opener, but would eventually dominate
Region 3 and make the 5A state tournament.

What we learned from this game - This was more like it. For
Brighton, it was an offensive explosion and felt a whole lot better
than the opener two days earlier.

Next - Brighton plays host to Juan Diego Aug. 17. Riverton has
Hillcrest at home the same day.

Links - There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief,

Aug. 11 - Brighton 1, Bountiful 1 (tie)

Story of the game - Stephanie Verdoia and Alexis Peterson scored
goals for their respective teams, and that enabled Brighton  to open
the girls soccer season with a tie against Bountiful.

Brighton's highlights - Verdoia was the team's leading scorer last
season and she started exactly where she left off. The Bengals were
a little rusty, with only a few practices before this game, but learned a
lot about themselves.

Bountiful's highlights - Peterson had just two goals last season, but
Bountiful was one of the top 4A teams with a 14-4 record. The
Braves also benefited from having played their first game the day
before.

What we learned from this game - Coach Tennille Vance figured
this would be a tough match. Besides having already played,
Bountiful was stoked to play its only 5A opponent on the schedule.

Next - Brighton has its first home match against Riverton Aug. 13.
Bountiful starts its season quickly, with its third match in three days
against Park City.
