March 2 - Copper Hills 67, Brighton 57

Story of the game: Steven Larson scored 11 of his game-high 28
points in the fourth quarter as Copper Hills held off Brighton in one
of the biggest upsets on opening day of the 5A state tourney.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies avenged a loss in the
season opener, and led by 20 points (34-14) in the first half. Larson
had help from teammate Steven Cordova, who had 22 points.
Copper Hills played much better defense this time and picked up
some much-needed momentum.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed by double digits for
most of the first half, but rallied behind senior Sam Wunderli to
actually take the lead entering the fourth quarter. Brighton had an
18-2 run at one point.

Statistical notes: Larson and Cordova combined for 50 points. The
Grizzlies also had a big advantage at the free-throw line. Only seven
players scored for Brighton.

What we learned from this game: Brighton was expected to
challenge for the 5A state title. Instead, Copper Hills emerged the
time to beat. It was Brighton's only home loss all season.

Story of the game: Steven Cordova scored 23 points and Steven
Larson had 20 as Copper Hills wore down Taylorsville and clinched
third place in Region 3.

Copper Hills' best moment: Cordova and Larson had a great

just 3-11. Cordova had three treys for Copper Hills.

What we learned from this game: The Grizzlies won their second
straight and appear to be on their way to the 5A state tourney. This
is a team to avoid in the state tourney. For a 3 seed, they could be
dangerous.

Dec. 1 - Brighton 89, Copper Hills 82

Story of the game: Sam Wunderli started off the season on a high
note, scoring a career-high 33 points, as Brighton held off Copper
Hills in a game that included a furious fourth quarter.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies were in the game the
entire way, and got 27 points from Steven Cordova and 25 from
Steven Larson. Tyler Faalogo was the team's main outside threat
with a pair of three-pointers.

Brighton's best moment: Brighton's senior starters played a big
role as the Bengals were able to score 31 points in the final quarter
to stave off the Grizzlies' rally. Corbin Miller had 18 points, including
four treys. Austin Hudson had 16 points inside.

Statistical notes: Brighton had seven three-pointers, and Wunderli
even had a pair. Only seven players scored for each team in this
high-scoring game.

What we learned from this game: Both of these teams will
probably be near the top of their regions this year. This was a fun
game to watch, and had all of the excitement of a post-season
contest.

Nov. 24 - Copper Hills 51, Bonneville 42

Story of the game: Steven Larson scored 19 points and Steven
Cordova had 16 as Copper Hills blew out Bonneville with a big
second quarter and hung on to win its season-opening game.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies trailed after one quarter,
but outscored Bonneville 17-3 in the second period to take a
12-point lead. Cordova was the team's outside-scoring threat with
four three-pointers.

Bonneville's best moment: Bonneville started slowly. The Lakers
scored 30 of their 42 points in the second half. Jaden Welsh had 15
points, including three treys.

Statistical notes: Copper Hills shot just 50 percent (9-18) from the
free throw line. Cordova was the only Grizzly to hit from three-point
range.

What we learned from this game: It was the first game of the
season, and any win is a good one. Larson and Cordova seemed
to develop a good inside-outside game.
