-----5A state tournament-----
March 2 - vs. Davis (L 51-54)
* - Region 3 games
Home games in CAPS
March 2 - Davis 54, Copper Hills 51
Story of the game: Jordan Welk and Trevor Daniels scored 16 points
apiece as Davis rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Copper Hills in the
opening round of the 5A state tournament.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies trailed early, but rallied in
the second and third quarters to take the lead. The fourth quarter was
back-and-forth. Steven Larson had a big day with 13 points, while
Preston Stelter had 10.
Davis' best moment: The Darts were down, but regained the
momentum and the lead thanks to its improved defense and
free-throw shooting.
Statistical notes: Davis hit 17-25 free throws, compared to just 9-17
for Copper Hills. The Darts had five three-pointers; Copper Hills had
two, both by Stelter.
What we learned from this game: Copper Hills was the underdog
and put a good scare into Region 1's top team. Region 3, as a whole,
played well in the first round.
Next: Copper Hills is finished for the season with an 11-11 record.
Davis advanced to take on Pleasant Grove.

Feb. 24 - Riverton 49, Copper Hills 37
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 21 points and Riverton took
advantage of a big foul differential to turn back Copper Hills in the
regular season finale for both teams.
Copper Hills' best moment: After taking a 14-11 first-quarter lead, the
Grizzlies had trouble scoring, managing just 12 points in the middle
two quarters. Tyler Faalogo was the top scorer with eight points.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves trailed after the first
quarter, but dominated after that. This was a physical game and
Riverton had to win it from the free-throw line, where they hit 20-29
shots. Garrett Gundestrup added 11 points.
Statistical notes: Preston Stelter and Kaden Anselmo had a pair of
three-pointers for Copper Hills. Gundestrup had two for Riverton. The
win avenged an earlier loss at Copper Hills Jan. 27.
What we learned from this game: Copper Hills could have lost its 5A
state tourney berth if Hunter had beaten Bingham, but that didn't
happen. This year is certainly an improvement from last year.
Next: Copper Hills will play Davis March 2 in the first round of the 5A
state tourney. Riverton will take on Clearfield the same day.

Feb. 20 - Copper Hills 57, Hunter 53
Story of the game: Junior center Steven Larson scored 15 points and
pulled down nine rebounds as Copper Hills held off Hunter in a
Region 3 game and put itself in good position to capture the fourth -
and last - 5A state tournament berth.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies led 17-9 after the first
quarter and extended the margin to 31-18 at halftime. Copper Hills hit
enough of its free throws to hold on to the win and avenge a 59-41
defeat to Hunter last month.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines didn't give up. Led by
sharpshooter Jeff Poole, who had a game-high 22 points, Hunter had
the Grizzlies' home crowd nervous during a 22-point fourth quarter.
Fernando Perez backed up Poole with 13 points, while A.J. Pataialii
had 12..
Statistical notes: Copper Hills was 15-26 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 13-22. Hunter's Magik Givens, who had 27 against
Kearns, was scoreless.
What we learned from this game: Copper Hills is now in sole
possession of fourth place in Region 3 with one game to play. The
Grizzlies also clinched a winning season.
Next: Copper Hills finishes the regular season at Riverton on Feb. 24.
Hunter travels to Bingham.

Story of the game: Remington Peck scored 20 points as Bingham
pulled away early and downed Copper Hills to keep its one-game
lead in Region 3.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies got 15 points from Myles
Spencer, and rallied to get within 12 points by the end of the third
quarter. Tyler Faalogo had 11 points and Preston Stelter 10.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners took a 13-4 lead in the first
quarter, and extended it to 35-13 at halftime. They let up in the third
period, but blew the game open again late. Ben Clifford added 16
points and Blake Krahenbuhl 10.
Statistical notes: Bingham had six three-pointers, including three
from Peck. Stelter had two for Copper Hills. Bingham outscored
Copper Hills 23-10 in fourth quarter and that resulted in the big final
margin.
What we learned from this game: A win against Bingham wasn't
expected. The game that will decide Copper Hills' fate is coming up
next.
Next: Copper Hills takes on Hunter at home on Feb. 20. Bingham
plays host to West Jordan the same night.

Feb. 10 - West Jordan 68, Copper Hills 50
Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 20 points and Reyes
Gallegos had 19 as West Jordan broke loose in the fourth quarter and
beat Copper Hills in a Region 3 game.
Copper Hills' best moment: Preston Stelter was the Grizzlies' biggest
offensive threat. He had 18 points, including four three-pointers.
Nobody else was in double figures.
West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 44-40 after the third
quarter, but outscored Copper Hills 24-10 in the final period. Tyson
Holt and Mason Sawyer added 10 points apiece.
Statistical notes: The Grizzlies shot just eight free throws. There were
11 three-pointers in the game.
What we learned from this game: Copper Hills came close in this
upset attempt. The Grizzlies are still in fourth place, but that Feb. 20
game against Hunter is what will decide everything.
Next: Copper Hills has Bingham at home Feb 13. West Jordan plays
host to Riverton the same night.

Feb. 6 - Copper Hills 48, Kearns 38
Story of the game: Tyler Faalogo scored 17 points and Preston
Stelter added 15, including the first eight of the game, as Copper Hills
downed Kearns in a Region 3 game.
Copper Hills' best moment: Stelter provided most of the offense as
the Grizzlies took a 10-2 first-quarter lead. It was 32-16 going into the
final quarter, and they hit 9-13 free throws to prevent the Cougars'
comeback from getting any closer.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars scored 22 of their 38 points in
the fourth quarter. Fatu Moala led with nine points, while three others
had six points.
Statistical notes: Kearns had just nine points at halftime. Stelter had
three treys for Copper Hills. Both teams shot well (about 70 percent)
from the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: Copper Hills had to win this game
to keep its hopes alive of reaching the 5A state tournament. That berth
will likely come down to the Feb. 20 game against Hunter.
Next: Copper Hills goes to West Jordan Feb. 10. Kearns takes on
Bingham at home the same night.

Jan. 30 - Hunter 59, Copper Hills 41
Story of the game: Jeff Poole scored 22 points and A.J. Pataialii
added 12 as Hunter surprised Copper Hills in a Region 3 game.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies didn't come ready to play.
They were outscored 38-26 in the second half, so never did rally.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines never trailed. Hunter led
21-15 at halftime and just added to it in the second half. Poole was
the big outside threat with four three-pointers.
Statistical notes: Copper Hills' leading scorer, Preston Stelter, had
just two points. Myles Spencer had 12 points to lead the Grizzlies.
Copper Hills hit just 9-21 free throws. Kevin Williams chipped in nine
points for Hunter.
What we learned from this game: Awwww, man. Copper Hills was
coming off a big win over Riverton and then the Grizzlies wasted it by
losing to Hunter. Well, at least it was a road game. They'll get another
chance, but they better not waste it.
Next: Copper Hills has Kearns at home on Feb. 6. Hunter plays host
to West Jordan the same night.

Jan. 27 - Copper Hills 50, Riverton 46 (OT)
Story of the game: Tyler Faalogo scored 12 of his 20 points in the
fourth quarter, including a layup that sent the game into overtime, and
that propelled Copper Hills to its biggest win of the season over
Riverton.
Copper Hills' best moment: The game was close throughout, and
Faalogo put the team on his shoulders and had a season-best night.
Riverton was able to stop the Grizzlies' usual scorers. Myles Spencer
added 10 points.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves played good defense, as
usual, but just couldn't pull away from their rivals. Scott Friel led with
14 points.
Statistical notes: This was a defensive battle, with plenty of fouls and
free throws. Both teams shot about the same from the free-throw line.
The game was tied 43-43 at the end of regulation.
What we learned from this game: This win separates Copper Hills
from the lower-tier teams in the region (Hunter, Kearns) and puts it in
better position to earn a berth in the 5A state tournament.
Next: Copper Hills plays at Hunter Jan. 30. Riverton takes on Kearns
at home the same night.

Jan. 23 - Bingham 70, Copper Hills 54
Story of the game: Shad Sommerville led a balanced scoring attack
with 14 points as Bingham raced past Copper Hills with a big second
quarter and claimed the Region 3 win.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies tried a furious rally in the
fourth quarter. They scored 24 points, but they were just too far behind
at the time to get close, and had to foul at the end. Tyler Faalogo led
Copper Hills with 16 points.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners were able to shoot well from
the outside. Nate Girsberger had four treys by himself and the team
had eight overall. Bingham led just 11-10 after the first quarter, but
extended it to 31-18 at halftime.
Statistical notes: Girsberger and Ben Clifford had 13 points.
Remington Peck added 10. Bingham was 16-30 from the free-throw
line; Copper Hills was 18-28.
What we learned from this game: Copper Hills gave up 70 points,
which was a season high. This team can make the post-season, but
it needs to play better defense and perhaps upset a team or two.
Next: Copper Hills plays host to Riverton on Jan. 27. Bingham travels
to Hunter the same night.

Jan. 20 - West Jordan 51, Copper Hills 47
Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 19 points and led a huge
fourth-quarter rally as West Jordan avoided an upset and edged
Copper Hills in a Region 3 game.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies got their home crowd into
the game early by outscoring West Jordan 13-4 in the first quarter.
This was their chance to show they belong in the upper echelon of the
region, but it didn't pan out. Preston Stelter had 17 points.
West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed the entire game,
and had a 35-28 deficit to make up in the final quarter, but they
outscored Copper Hills 23-12 to do it. Tyson Holt added 12 points.
Statistical notes: Stelter had five three-pointers for Copper Hills. West
Jordan was 14-24 from the free-throw line; Copper Hills was 8-13.
What we learned from this game: Oh so close. Stelter got hot early,
but the Griz couldn't close the deal. They're not far away, though.
Next: Copper Hills goes to Bingham on Jan. 23. West Jordan plays at
Riverton the same night.

Jan. 16 - Copper Hills 43, Kearns 28
Story of the game: Myles Spencer and Steven Cordovia scored 10
points apiece, but it was the Copper Hills defense that won this
game, holding Kearns to a season-low point total.
Copper Hills' best moment: The game was tied 6-6 after one quarter,
but the Grizzlies got their offense going after that. Copper Hills held
Kearns to single digits in each quarter.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars lost their third straight game it's
clearly the offense that is having trouble, averaging just 31.6 points
during that stretch. Justyn Searle led with nine points.
Statistical notes: Preston Stelter had nine points for Copper Hills. Not
many fouls were called as Copper Hills was 6-8 from the free-throw
line, and Kearns 2-6. Kearns is 0-4 at home this season.
What we learned from this game: Both of these teams are facing an
uphill battle in region, but Copper Hills has potential. The Grizzlies are
8-4 and have some momentum. Let's see where it takes them.
Next: Copper Hills plays West Jordan at home Jan. 20. Kearns goes
to Bingham the same night.

Jan. 10 - Copper Hills 46, Springville 45
Story of the game: Preston Stelter scored 14 points and Alex
Shedden added 12 and Copper Hills hit enough of its free throws late
in the game to edge Springville in a non-region game.
Copper Hills' best moment: This game was close the entire way. It
was tied 26-26 at halftime. Stelter and Steven Cordova had a pair of
three-pointers for the Grizzlies, who hit just 8-16 free throws.
Springville's best moment: The Red Devils hadn't played since Dec.
30, but stayed right with the home team. Alex Mortensen led
Springville with 17 points.
Statistical notes: This game was originally scheduled for Dec. 19, but
cancelled due to poor road conditions (snowstorm). Statistically, the
difference in this game might have been three-point shooting, where
the Grizzlies made five and Springville two.
What we learned from this game: The Grizzlies won their last two
games and go into Region 3 play on a win streak.
Next: Copper Hills travels to Kearns on Jan. 16. Springville goes to
Payson Jan. 13.

Jan. 9 - Copper Hills 46, Taylorsville 28
Story of the game: Steven Larson scored 16 points and pulled down
10 rebounds and Copper Hills held its opponent scoreless in the
third quarter en route to a non-region win over the team formerly
known as Taylorsville.
Copper Hills' best moment: The game was tied 22-22 at halftime,
then the Grizzlies took over. Copper Hills ended a two-game losing
streak in impressive fashion. To hold a team scoreless for eight
minutes is rare.
Taylorsville's best moment: What has happened to this team? That's
three straight "embarrassing" defeats. The Warriors led 14-8 after the
first quarter, then were outscored 38-14 the rest of the way. Jordan
Edgington led with nine points - well below his average.
Statistical notes: Copper Hills had three treys; Taylorsville none. That
means there was no outside scoring threat. The 28 points was a
season low for the Warriors.
What we learned from this game: Games like this might happen
once in a while. When the other team doesn't really want to play, you
take it and run.
Next: Copper Hills has a "makeup" game tonight (Jan. 10) against
Springville. Taylorsville opens Region 2 play at home against Alta Jan.
16.

Story of the game: Lance Hansen scored 18 points as Uintah
dominated the middle two quarters and went on to upset Copper Hills
in a non-region game.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies led 16-15 after one quarter
and seemed headed for the win they expected. Copper Hills also
made a good rally in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough. Steven
Larson led with 11 points and Preston Stelter had 10.
Uintah's best moment: The Utes improved to 6-4 overall, and this
was their only game against a 5A opponent. Josh Ewell backed up

the stretch. Copper Hills was just 5-11. Kaden Anselmo had eight
points for Copper Hills. Stelter and Anselmo had two three-pointers
for the home team.
What we learned from this game: This was an upset, and a great
win for Uintah. In fact, it might be one of their best memories of the
season. Copper Hills must play its best each game or the same thing
might happen in the future.
Next: Copper Hills plays host to Taylorsville Jan. 9. Uintah opens
Region 10 play at home against Wasatch the same night.

Jan. 2 - Lehi 56, Copper Hills 52
Story of the game: Will Walker scored 27 points and hit some key
free throws down the stretch as Lehi hung on to defeat Copper Hills in
a non-region game.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies rallied from their early
deficit, using Steven Cordova's 20 points and Tyler Faalogo's 14.
Copper Hills also had eight three-point baskets.
Lehi's best moment: The Pioneers jumped to a huge 22-6 lead, but
Copper Hills got back into it. The game was close in the fourth
quarter, but Lehi took advantage of its fine free-throw shooting to hang
on to the win.
Statistical notes: Lehi hit 25 of 30 free throws, many late in the game
by Walker and Corey Smith, who had 11 points. Copper Hills only
scored four points in the first quarter.
What we learned from this game: A tough loss for the Grizzlies. Not
much else to say at this time.

tonight at home.

used its best free-throw shooting of the season to turn back Syracuse

quarters and connected on 18-23 free throws, many of them down the
stretch, to earn the victory. Kaden Anselmo had nine points.
Syracuse's best moment: The Titans made a nice comeback attempt
in the final quarter. Braden Hamblin had 20 points for Syracuse.
Gallegos had 13.
Statistical notes: Syracuse was just 6-17 from the free-throw line.
The Titans scored just seven points in the third quarter, but held
Copper Hills to 10. The Titans fell to 1-6.
What we learned from this game: This game was close most of the
way, and Copper Hills earned its second straight win.

1play Jan. 9 at home against Weber.

Story of the game: Steven Cordova and Steven Larson scored 14
points apiece as Copper Hills used its outside shooting talents to
jump to a big lead and coast to an easy win over Granger in a
non-region game.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies put this game away early.
Cordovia, Casey Hughes and Kaden Anselmo had three-pointers
early and Copper Hills took a 13-2 lead. It was 37-16 halftime and, for
all practical purposes, the game was over.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers played without T.J. Tapusoa,
who could not play after being ejected from the team's last game. Tre
Musgrow led Granger with 16 points. It was 49-25 after three quarters
before Granger rallied in the fourth.
Statistical notes: Cordova had three treys for Coppers Hills, which
had six overall. Granger had two threes. Both teams shot just over 50
percent from the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: This was a good win for the
Grizzlies, and the second straight team to teach Granger a lesson.
Next: Copper Hills plays host to Syracuse on Dec. 30. Granger plays
at Skyline Jan. 2.

benefited a huge foul differential to turn back Copper Hills in a
non-region game.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies made a run at Sky View in
the second half. Trailing 26-19 at halftime, Copper Hills rallied behind
Steven Larson and Tyler Faalogo.
Sky View's best moment: The Bobcats jumped ahead 13-7 after the
first quarter and never trailed again. Late in the game, Sky View shot

Statistical notes: Copper Hills was only 4-11 from the line. Eric
Berntson had nine points points and four blocked shots for Sky View.
Copper Hills had four three-pointer, including two by Preston Stelter.
What we learned from this game: This was a tough game, and not
just on the court. The team had to drive through a bad snowstorm up
and back to Smithfield. Sky View had a definite home-court advantage.
Next: Copper Hills returns home to take on Springville today (Dec.
19). Sky View will play host to Morgan on Dec. 30.

Dec. 16 - Copper Hills 68, East 53
Story of the game: Preston Stelter scored 14 points, but it was the
Copper Hills defense that came alive, holding East to just four points
in the second quarter, and the Grizzlies claimed the non-region road
win.
Copper Hills' best moment: Leading 20-15 after the first period,
Copper Hills put the clamps on East's offense. By halftime, it was
33-19. Steven Larson had 11 points, while Tyler Faalogo and
Chandler Allen added eight.
East's best moment: Christian Brown scored 23 points, which was
his season high. Still, the Leopards could only rally in the fourth
quarter, when the game was out of reach. Jeff Vargas had 14.
Statistical notes: This was the second straight "good" game by
Copper Hills, which hit 18-21 free throws in an unfamiliar gym. East
was 14-30 from the line. Brown had four three-point baskets in the
loss.
What we learned from this game: A good win - and on the road - for
the Grizzlies, who are now 3-1. The preseason schedule doesn't look
too strong, so Copper Hills is looking for wins, and momentum, going
into region play.
Next: Copper Hills plays at Sky View on Thursday (Dec. 18). East
travels to Cedar City to play in a two-day tournament at SUU.

Dec. 12 - Copper Hills 57, Hillcrest 41
Story of the game: Steven Larson scored 19 points and Copper Hills
blew out Hillcrest in the first and third quarters en route to a
convincing home victory.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies jumped out to a 16-5 lead.
Then, after Hillcrest rallied, they did it again with a big third period.
Copper Hills prevented a comeback by hitting 12-14 free throws down
the stretch.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies played well in the second
quarter, and their offense came alive in the final period. Curtis
Blackmore led the way with 13 points. Kyle Maughan, the team's
leading scorer, had just seven.
Statistical notes: Myles Spencer backed up Larson with 11 points.
Kaden Anselmo added nine. Spencer was the Grizzlies' outside
shooting threat with three treys.
What we learned from this game: After an 8-day layoff, this was a
good win. Copper Hills played well, so all those practices seem to
have paid dividends.
Next: Copper Hills travels across the valley Tuesday (Dec. 16) to play
East. Hillcrest fell to 2-3 overall and goes to Clearfield the same night.

Dec. 4 - Northridge 64, Copper Hills 59
Story of the game: Blake Smithing scored 15 points and Northridge
benefited a huge foul discrepancy to hold off Copper Hills in a
non-region game on the Knights' home floor.
Copper Hills' best moment: Preston Stelter led Copper Hills with 14
points, while Kaden Anselmo had 11. Almost all of their points came
from three-point range, and they keyed a fourth-quarter comeback that
came up short.
Northridge's best moment: The Knights blew the game open with a
big second quarter, outscoring the Grizzlies 18-9. Northridge had a
good inside game for the second straight game.
Statistical notes: Northridge was 22-28 from the free-throw line, while
Copper Hills was a horrible 4-16. If the Grizzlies shoot 50 percent
from the line, this is a different game.
What we learned from this game: Copper Hills relied too much on its
outside game. While the Grizzlies nailed nine three-point baskets,
they are losing the inside battle and that's often where games are
won. Region mate Riverton went to Northridge and won handily last
week.
Next: Copper Hills has some time off before playing its home opener
against Hillcrest Dec. 12. Northridge travels to Mountain Crest Dec. 9.

Nov. 25 - Copper Hills 49, Bonneville 46
Story of the game: Guards Tyler Faalogo and B.J. Cavar scored 10
points apiece as the Grizzlies shook off a slow start and captured a
road win over Bonneville in the season opener for both teams.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies led 6-4 after the first quarter,
but both teams seemed to find their offense after that. Eight players
scored for Copper Hills, which seemed to help the team avoid foul
problems.
Bonneville's best moment: Connor Stephens had 13 points for
Bonneville, which fell early and never seemed to maintain a point
spurt. The Lakers did hit four three-point baskets in their own gym.
Statistical notes: Copper Hills was just 8-15 from the free-throw line,
compared to 12-18 for Bonneville. Steven Cordova added six points
for CH and Chandler Allen had five. Both had CH's only three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: It's always nice to start the season
with a road win, especially a narrow one.
Next: Copper Hills has a little time off before going up to Northridge
for a Dec. 4 game. Bonneville takes on Ogden Nov. 26.
