Feb. 27 - Jordan 52, Cottonwood 49

Story of the game: Kevin Goldsmith scored 11 of his 15 points in the
second half as Jordan held off Cottonwood in a first round 5A state
tournament game and end a four-game losing streak.

Cottonwood's highlights: The Colts played without F Vlad Malugin,
who was injured and sorely missed. Korbin Dooley, Parker Vassau
and Rollin Carter had timely baskets. Raymond Chavez tried to make
the tying three-pointer and may have been fouled, but no call.

Jordan's highlights: The Diggers' experience showed. Goldsmith
came alive, Joe Mero hit a couple of key free throws in the final
minute and the defense stopped a three-point attempt. All this was
needed to end their own doubts from losing four straight games.

Statistical notes: Jordan's Nate Monson did a nice job defending
Daniel Kristensen, who struggled to find good shots. Cottonwood
committed 22 turnovers. The Colts made 6-13 three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: The Colts had their chances, but
couldn't advance. They finished with a losing record, but felt like one
of 5A's top teams regardless.

Feb. 23 - Cottonwood 61, West 46

Story of the game: Tim Glenn led a balanced-scoring effort with 13
points as an inspired Cottonwood team celebrated "Senior Night"
with a convincing Region 2 victory over West, ending the Panthers'
17-game win streak.

Cottonwood's highlights: The Colts took a 12-2 lead, forcing eight
West turnovers in the opening quarter. Cottonwood withstood West's
rally, and made enough free throws late to actually extend the lead.
Korbin Dooley had 11 points and Parker Vassau 10.

West's highlights: The Panthers didn't come ready to play, and it
showed. They scored the game's first basket, then flopped. Jordan
Tanner led a second-quarter rally with three treys, and finished with
13 points. Gatete Djuma had 12 points, including a pair of dunks.

Statistical notes: Djuma finished with 15 rebounds, and West
controlled the boards, 39-25. West also committed 22 turnovers.
Leading scorer Tyrell Corbin had just five points and was 1-9 from
the field. Vassau had a nice game, and has really come on lately.

What we learned from this game: This was a big win for
Cottonwood, and probably the highlight so far this season. The Colts
can be one of the state's best teams when all is aligned, and they
are certainly have the most depth.

Feb. 19 - Cottonwood 70, Hunter 63

Story of the game: Korbin Dooley sparked Cottonwood's fast break,
scoring a career-high 32 points, as the Colts beat Hunter in a Region
2 contest.

Cottonwood's highlights: The game was tied at halftime, but Dooley
kept the Colts' offense moving. He received some great passes from
Tim Glenn and Jason Lundquist, and got help off the bench from
Parker Vassau and Vlad Malugin, who had 15 and 12 points.

Hunter's highlights: The Wolverines' offense had really come alive
lately behind Brandon Peterson and Austin Hernandez, who each
had 14 points. Hernandez was especially hot from the perimeter and
finished with four treys. As a team Hunter had 11.

Statistical notes: Hernandez hit consecutive three-pointers during
Hunter's second-quarter rally. Free-throw shooting hurt the Colts
again. They were 6-13, compared to 6-7 for Hunter. Arlen Smith didn't
play.

What we learned from this game: The Colts clinched fourth place
with the win. They can't go any higher because Murray holds the
tiebreaker. Cottonwood's goal now is a winning season.

Feb. 16 - Skyline 60, Cottonwood 51

Story of the game: Jaden Jackson had one of his best games of the
season, scoring 28 points and controlling the offense with his
ballhandling, as Skyline bounced Cottonwood in a Region 2 game.

Cottonwood's highlights: The Colts fell behind early, but rallied to
within four points by the end of the third quarter and then tied the
game 34-34. Korbin Dooley came alive in the second half and
scored 13 points. Daniel Kristensen and Vlad Malugin had 11 each.

Skyline's highlights: Jackson ended Cottonwood's fourth-quarter

six-point lead. He also made almost all of his free throws down the
stretch. Brian Orr added nine points and James Tingey eight.

Statistical notes: Jackson shot 10-11 from the free-throw line and
Skyline was 20-24 from the stripe. Skyline jumped to a 9-2 lead to
start the game. Kristensen had eight rebounds and Malugin seven.

because Cyprus was also beaten. Still, four losses in five games
has to concern coach McConnell.

points and nine rebounds.

quarter and never trailed. Isaac Johnson added 10 points and
Marquis Newman had nine points and nine rebounds.

Cottonwood was just 4-9. Cyprus was credited with 14 assists on 18
baskets, meaning the Pirates passed the ball well. Leading scorer
Korbin Dooley had seven points for Cottonwood.

play region leaders Skyline and West in two of their last three games.

free-throw line. Deng had three treys for Granger. Glenn's 12 points

Story of the game: David Collette scored 14 points and Riley
Grandinetti had another good game with 11 as Murray edged
Cottonwood for its fourth straight Region 2 victory.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts scored just two points in the
opening quarter and trailed throughout. Daniel Kristensen (nine
points) and Korbin Dooley (eight) led Cottonwood on a comeback,
but poor shooting doomed them.

Murray's best moment: Collette, Grandinetti and Cade Bullough
were a nice combination in this otherwise defensive battle. Murray's
defense played well and Collette was a force inside. Bullough
finished with nine points.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood shot just 7-19 from the free throw line.
Murray was 12-20. Grandinetti nailed a pair of three-pointers. He is
averaging 10.5 ppg over the last four games.

the game got Cottonwood within 44-41. Arlen Smith was the top

West's best moment: The Panthers' trapping defense, and the
inside play of Gatete Djuma created problems for Cottonwood. After
the Colts closed to within three points, West ended the game on a
9-0 run. Djuma had nine points and Tana Afeaki eight.

Statistical notes: Ray Chavez, who averaged 10.2 ppg last year,
hasn't scored in double figures in 10 games. West's Cheney Doane

line Cottonwood was just 5-12.

What we learned from this game: The Colts had a chance to really
make a move in the Region 2 standings, but fell short. They are tied
for second place at the halfway point.

season. Cottonwood outscored Hunter 21-11 in the fourth period and

inside presence. Andrew Togiai led with 15 points, followed by
Wesley Wright (14) and Brady Wright (13).

Statistical notes - Only five players scored for Taylorsville, but the
Wright brothers had good games. Nine different players scored for
Cottonwood, which seemed to have the deeper bench.

What we learned from this game - Taylorsville made a nice run at
Cottonwood near the end but, after a timeout, the Colts held on to the
ball and then found Glenn for a nice layup that was a
difference-maker. Cottonwood had too many turnovers, but did hang
on.
