March 3 - Bountiful 70, Cottonwood 44

Story of the game: Sean Carey scored 17 points as Bountiful
dominated Cottonwood from the beginning, grabbing a 22-4
first-quarter lead and coasting to the 4A state tournament win.

Cottonwood's key moment: The Colts played tough after the first
quarter, but were outshot, outrebounded and outhustled most of
the time. Jake Nelson was the top scorer with nine points,
including two three-pointers.

Bountiful's key moment: The Braves shot 55 percent from the field,
outrebounded Cottonwood 36-15 and forced 21 turnovers.
Bountiful played crisp in this tourney opener and impressed a lot of
people.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood's 44-point total was a season low.
Bountiful was 8-9 from the free-throw line; Cottonwood was 6-7.
After the first quarter, the Colts were outscored by only 48-40. The
teams played earlier this season and Bountiful won 61-59.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood was a longshot to
get a first-round win. The Colts had the worst record and, while this
game was over early, they got good tourney experience for next year.

Next: Cottonwood is done for the season. Bountiful advanced to
play Mountain View Feb. 5.

Feb. 24 - Murray 89, Cottonwood 70

Story of the game: Markus Duran put in an MVP-type performance,
scoring 27 points, as Murray buried Cottonwood in its Region 6
finale for its fourth straight victory.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts can also shoot the ball.
Tyson Reynolds led the way with 26 points and Cottonwood had 10
treys. Raymond Chavez had 16 and Jake Reynolds 14.

Murray's best moment: The game was close until the Spartans
really got their offense going in the second half, pouring in 56
points in that span. Duran had five of his team's 11 three-pointers.
Ken Masic and Wyatt Woodard added 14 points apiece.

Statistical notes: Murray's 89-point effort was its season best.
Duran finished the season as Region 6's top scorer. Murray
outscored Cottonwood 34-26 in the final quarter.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood got a state tourney
berth, so that's a big plus over last year. The Colts will need to
improve, however, to get past the first round.

Next: Cottonwood takes on Bountiful in the opening round of the 4A
state tourney March 3.
Murray drew unbeaten Provo.

Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds scored 20 points, including
four three-pointers, as Cottonwood rallied in the fourth quarter to
beat Granger in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts trailed 40-36 entering the
final period, but outscored Granger 27-12 in that span. Cottonwood
had a big free-throw advantage on Granger's home court.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers played a great first half, and
held a 27-21 lead. Tre Musgrow was Granger's top scorer with 13
points, while Woul Koyom had 11 and Cody Thorup 10.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 25-34 from the free-throw line;
Granger was 5-13. Raymond Chavez had 15 points and Alo Moli 10
for the Colts. Cottonwood had eight three-pointers; Granger had
five.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood needed this win
because it put the Colts one game ahead of East with one to play.

Next: Cottonwood plays host to Murray in the regular-season finale
Feb. 24.
Granger finishes at West the same night.

Feb. 17 - Highland 56, Cottonwood 55

Story of the game: Spenser Bowen scored 14 points and Latu
Heimuli added 11 as Highland tipped in a missed shot at the
buzzer and held off Cottonwood in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts rallied in the fourth quarter,
and scored 25 of their points in that eight-minute span. Tyson
Reynolds had 17 points and Alo Moli 16 for Cottonwood.

Highland's best moment: The Rams trailed after the first quarter,
but outscored Cottonwood 17-5 to take a halftime lead. Bowen had
four three-pointers for Highland.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood hit 22-26 free throws, while
Highland was just 13-23. Jake Nelson had 10 points for the Colts,
including two three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood is tied with East for
the final playoff spot, and East holds the tiebreaker. The Colts need
to win at least one of their final two games.

Next: Cottonwood travels to Granger on Feb. 20. Highland plays
host to
West the same night.

Feb. 13 - Olympus 73, Cottonwood 42

Story of the game: Spencer Hille scored a season-high 20 points,
but it was the Titans' defense that held Cottonwood to its worst
offensive game of the season in the Region 6 win.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts were never in this game,
and suffered their worst loss of the season. Raymond Chavez and
Alo Moli were the top scorers with nine points apiece.

Olympus' best moment: The Titans' defense started quickly,
holding Cottonwood to just three points in the first quarter. When
Oly's offense kicked in soon after, this game was over. Corbin
Green had 12 points and Connor Brady had 11.

Statistical notes: This was Oly's second straight 30+ win. Oly had
eight three-pointers, while Cottonwood had four.

What we learned from this game: The Colts need to win at least
one game to have a chance to earn a berth in the 4A state
tournament. Two wins would clinch it.

Next: Cottonwood takes on Highland at home Feb. 17. Olympus
travels to play
West.

Feb. 10 - Cottonwood 61, Cyprus 47

Story of the game: Jake Nelson had a season-high 18 points,
including four three-pointers, as Cottonwood rallied in the second
half to down Cyprus in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The game was tied 21-21 at halftime
before Cottonwood got its offense going. Nelson was the key
outscoring threat as the Colts scored 23 points in the third quarter
alone and end a two-game losing streak.

Cyprus' best moment: Roman Sanchez had 15 points for the
Pirates, who played a good first half and stayed even. The defense
was porous after that. Nobody else reached double figures.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 13-16 from the free-throw line,
compared to 10-18 for Cyprus. Raymond Chavez had 14 points
and Tyson Reynolds 11 for the Colts.

What we learned from this game: The Colts just need to stay
ahead of East to earn a 4A state tourney berth, and they have
comparable schedules.

Next: Cottonwood plays at Olympus on Feb. 13. Cyprus takes on
West at home.

Feb. 6 - East 68, Cottonwood 57

Story of the game: Christian Brown scored 22 points and three
teammates also scored in double figures as East pulled away
from Cottonwood early and moved into a tie for the fifth - and last -
playoff spot in Region 6.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts were down by 15 points
entering the final period, but Tyson Reynolds led a comeback that
had the home crowd sweating. Reynolds finished with 20 points,
including three treys. Jake Nelson added 15.

East's best moment: East led from the start, jumping to a 16-5
advantage by the end of the first period. Brown led the Leopards'
offense with five three-pointers. Jeff Vargas, Deng Deng and
Andrew Williams had 10 points apiece.

Statistical notes: East had a huge advantage at the free-throw line,
hitting 25-40 of shots, compared to 11-22 for Cottonwood. East's
top two scoring games of the season have been against the Colts.

What we learned from this game: The Colts had a chance to
virtually clinch a post-season berth, but let it get away. Now,
Cottonwood and East are tied, and there is no clear tiebreaker
advantage. The Colts have an advantage in the schedule, however.

Next: Cottonwood takes on Cyprus at home on Feb. 10. East plays
at rival
West the same night.

Jan. 30 - West 54, Cottonwood 46

Story of the game: Tyrell Corbin scored 17 points, Chris Barnes
had 13 and Ricardo Saldana 12 as West turned back Cottonwood
in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts tried to rally in the second
half. They hit seven three-point baskets, but couldn't cut into the
lead. Alo Moli played one of his best games of the season and led
Cottonwood with 22 points.

West's best moment: The Panthers led 25-16 at halftime. This
wasn't a perfect game by any means. West shut down certain part
of Cottonwood's offense, but could not bury the Colts because of its
poor free-throw shooting.

Statistical notes: West was 13-28 from the free-throw line;
Cottonwood was 7-11. Tyson Reynolds had 15 points for
Cottonwood, including three treys. Moli had two treys, too.

What we learned from this game: The loss dropped Cottonwood
to 4-4 and the Colts are tied for fourth place in region. The Colts are
still in decent shape, and have East and Cyprus next.

Next: Cottonwood goes to East on Feb. 6. West plays host to
Murray the same night.

Jan. 27 - Cottonwood 69, Murray 65

Story of the game: Raymond Chavez's long-range shooting might
have been the difference as Cottonwood pulled away in the third
quarter and hung on to beat Murray in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The game was tied 28-28 at halftime,
but Cottonwood outscored Murray 23-16 in the third quarter. Chavez
led the way with four three-point baskets. Tyson Reynolds added
14 points.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans tried to rally in the fourth
quarter, but couldn't get close enough. Markus Duran had 23 points
and John Hunt had 13 for Murray.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 20-32 from the free-throw line;
Murray was 16-19. This was Cottonwood's second straight win on
Murray's home floor. Ken Masic had just six points for Murray.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood's win boosted the
Colts ahead of Murray and into fourth place in the region standings.

Next: Cottonwood plays West at home Jan. 30. Murray has a home
game against
Olympus.

Jan. 23 - Cottonwood 53, Granger 42

Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds scored 15 points and
Raymond Chavez had 12 as sharp-shooting Cottonwood held off
Granger in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts led just 33-30 entering the
fourth quarter, and Granger seemed to have the momentum.
However, the Cottonwood hit its free throws, ending up 13-15 from
the line, and hung on to the win.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers took the lead early, but
relinquished it in the second quarter. They made several runs at
Cottonwood, led by Tre Musgrow's 16 points, but couldn't catch up
and had to foul at the end.

Statistical notes: Alo Moli, Korbin Dooley and Jake Nelson had six
points each for Cottonwood. Granger shot well from the line, too,
hitting 16-20. Reynolds had three treys, while Chavez had two.

What we learned from this game: This is a game Cottonwood had
to win if it has post-season hopes, and it did it in the right way.
Cottonwood has shooters, and they shot well here.

Next: Cottonwood travels to Murray Jan. 27. Granger has a home
game against
West.

Jan. 20 - Highland 48, Cottonwood 46

Story of the game: Spenser Bowen did it again, racking up 17
points, including the go-ahead basket with 39 seconds left as
Highland rallied to beat Cottonwood in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts got contributions from
almost everyone who played. Tyson Reynolds led Cottonwood with
11 points. The Colts had a chance to win late, but turned the ball
over.

Highland's best moment: The Rams trailed most of the game, but
picked up its defense in the fourth quarter. Bowen and Walker
Jensen, who had yet another season-high (14 points), pulled
Highland back into the game with their outside shooting.

Statistical notes: The game was a three-point fest: Cottonwood
had eight treys, and Highland had seven. The Colts played well
considering the game was played at Highland's preferred pace.

What we learned from this game: This was a tough loss for
Cottonwood, but it may not hurt too badly. The Colts are likely going
after the region's last tournament berth.

Next: Cottonwood has Granger at home on Jan. 23. Highland plays
at
West the same night.

Jan. 16 - Olympus 71, Cottonwood 53

Story of the game: Will Watkins tied his season high with 20
points as Olympus grabbed an early lead and had little trouble
dispatching Cottonwood to stay unbeaten in region.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts scored just 10 points in the
first quarter, but hit eight three-pointers to make the final more
respectable. Raymond Chavez had 15 points and Tyson Reynolds
13.

Oly's best moment: The Titans had a balanced scoring attack with
four players in double figures. They jumped to a 16-6 first-quarter
lead, and ended up hitting 27-41 free throws, which was enough to
hold off the Colts' comeback.

Statistical notes: Chavez had four of Cottonwood's eight
three-point baskets. The Colts hit just 9-19 free throws - in their
own gym. Connor Brady had 15 points, Corbin Green 14 and Nick
Paulos 10 for Oly.

What we learned from this game: This game was potentially an
upset, but the Colts fell behind early and never mounted a threat.
Cottonwood's two region losses have been by what will likely end
up being the two best teams.

Next: Cottonwood goes to Highland on Jan. 20. Olympus plays
host to
West the same night.

Jan. 13 - Cottonwood 48, Cyprus 45

Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds and Alo Moli scored 15 points
apiece as Cottonwood won its second straight game and moved
near the top of the standings in Region 6.

Cottonwood's best moment: Moli is getting more involved in the
offense, and it is helping the Colts' inside-outside game.
Cottonwood led 37-29 after three quarters and held off the Pirates'
comeback.

Cyprus' best moment: The fourth-quarter rally was almost enough,
helped by the Colts' poor free-throw shooting. Weston Warr had 13
points and Isaac Johnson got back into the offense with 11,
including three treys.

Statistical notes: The Pirates' fourth-straight loss. They have also
lost all three of their close games (three points or less).
Cottonwood was 9-19 from the free-throw line. It was Moli's second
straight "good" offensive showing.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood is playing a
different style of basketball with Moli more involved, and it has two
wins to show for it. The schedule does get tougher, but the Colts
will play a role in the region's outcome.

Next: Cottonwood returns home to play Olympus Friday (Jan. 16).
Cyprus goes to the West the same night.

Jan. 9 - Cottonwood 81, East 73

Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds scored 20 points and Alo Moli
had a season-high 18 as Cottonwood took advantage of a big foul
differential and beat East for its first win of the season.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts moved the ball well and,
for the first time, had a decent inside game and it resulted in a win.
Cottonwood led 39-36 at halftime, but extended it to 10 points by
the end of the third quarter. Jake Nelson added 15 points.

East's best moment: East shot well from the perimeter, knocking
down 10 three-pointers, and made a nice rally in the fourth quarter.
Christian Brown led the Leopards with 20 points. Deng Deng had
15.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 31-47 from the free-throw line;
East finished 15-24. The Colts' 81 points was a season high. East
also had a season-high number of points.

What we learned from this game: It took until Jan. 9, but
Cottonwood has a win, and now the Colts are right back in the
middle of the region race.

Next: Cottonwood travels to play Cyprus on Jan. 13. East plays
host to rival
West the same night.

Jan. 6 - West 83, Cottonwood 56

Story of the game: Chris Barnes scored a season-high 28 points
as West broke open a close game in the second half and went on
to rout Cottonwood in each team's Region 6 opener.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts played tough in the first
half, and held a 41-39 halftime lead. Raymond Chavez had 15
points and Tyson Reynolds 13. Tim Glen helped out with nine
points, all on three-pointers.

West's best moment: No doubt about it. The Panthers got a scare,
but the defense picked up and held Cottonwood to just 15
second-half points. West outscored the Colts 27-6 in the final
quarter. Tyler Jackson had a season-high 15 for West.

Statistical notes: Barnes dominated the inside against the smaller
Colts. While Cottonwood hit eight three-pointers, West countered
with 10. Jackson had five treys by himself. Daniel Wray had 15
points and Ricardo Saldana 12.

What we learned from this game: The Colts had an upset in mind,
but they needed to play a full game to finish the job. Cottonwood
will beat someone, though. It's a matter of time.

Next: Cottonwood plays East at home on Friday (Jan. 9). West
travels to
Murray the same night.

Dec. 30 - Bountiful 61, Cottonwood 59

Story of the game: Travis Parrish scored 25 points and pulled
down nine rebounds as Bountiful grabbed a big lead early and
then held off Cottonwood in a non-region game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts had their outside-shooting
game working. The Colts rallied behind 20 points by Tyson
Reynolds, who also had three treys.

Bountiful's best moment: Christian Taylor backed up Parrish with
19 points. The Braves led 21-7 after the first quarter. Bountiful was
18-26 from the free-throw line, and needed those down the stretch.

Statistical notes: Alo Moli had 11 points for Cottonwood. Bountiful
dominated the key and hit just one three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood is 0-6 going into
Region 6 play, and must open against unbeaten West. This could
be a long season.

Next: Cottonwood plays at West on Jan. 6. Bountiful has a home
game against Viewmont Jan. 2.

Dec. 12 - Northridge 60, Cottonwood 57

Story of the game: Tyce Bockwoldt scored 21 points and led a
huge comeback as Northridge rallied to edge Cottonwood in a
non-region game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts were rolling in the first
quarter, jumping to a 23-10 lead. Raymond Chavez led Cottonwood
with 13 points, while Alo Moli had nine.

Northridge's best moment: That must have been some halftime
talk because the Knights came out strong. They outscored
Cottonwood 24-10 and trailed just 47-46. The last quarter was
quite a battle. Tanner Hendry added 14.

Statistical notes: There were a lot of fouls called. Cottonwood
finished a respectable 16-21 from the line, while Northridge was
20-33.

What we learned from this game: It's another loss, and the Colts
are now 0-5. It's possible that the potential excitement of winning
their first game could be a detriment. Cottonwood will win a game.
It's just a matter of time. Also, when nine players score in almost
every game, it will pay off at some point.

Next: Cottonwood is off until it plays at Bountiful Dec. 30.
Northridge improved to 3-2 and plays at
Hillcrest Friday (Dec. 19).

Dec. 9 - Skyline 73, Cottonwood 64

Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh scored 28 points as Skyline built
an early lead and shook off a Cottonwood comeback attempt to
claim a non-region road win.

Cottonwood's best moment: Cottonwood trailed 48-37 entering
the final quarter, but kept the game close with a flurry of three-point
baskets. Tyson Reynolds and Zach Ziegler led the Colts with 11
points each.

Skyline's best moment: Osterloh had the hot hand, and helped the
Eagles build an early lead. Kevin Wagstaff added 10 points, but the
real key was Skyline's ability to hit 17-23 free throws.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood canned 10 three-point baskets
during the game, compared to Skyline's four. Reynolds led the way
with three baskets from long range, while Ryan Lindquest and Tim
Glen had two each.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood has already proven
it can shoot from long range. It hasn't proven it can win. The
schedule hasn't been easy, but it has been all at home. It won't get
easier. This could be a long season for the Colts.

Next: Cottonwood has a week off before playing at Northridge on
Dec. 16.
Skyline has a home game against Juan Diego Friday.

Dec. 5 - Hillcrest 55, Cottonwood 50

Story of the game: Kyle Maughan led the way with 18 points, but it
was a key event with 6:03 left that resulted in two ejections and six
consecutive free throw attempts by Hillcrest that paved the way for
the Huskies to capture this physical non-region game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts are not particularly big, and
didn't want to play Hillcrest's slow style, so they extended their
defense full court, which resulted in 25 Husky turnovers. Raymond
Chavez had 13 points for Tyson Reynolds added 10. Zack Ziegler
also played well off the bench.

Hillcrest's best moment: Trailing 31-28, Cottonwood's Alo Moli
and Maughn got tangled up battling for a rebound, and a skirmish
took place. Moli and a Cottonwood assistant coach were tossed.
Maughan made 1-2 FTs, and Jeremy Ulrich nailed four straight.
Hillcrest never trailed after that.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was whistled for 25 fouls and
Hillcrest hit 28-43 shots from the FT line. Hillcrest had a 31-24
rebounding edge.

What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game, and
the scuffle, ejections and technicals didn't have to happen. If they
hadn't, this game could have turned out differently.

Dec. 2 - Spanish Fork 90, Cottonwood 72

Story of the game: Breck Lewis scored 20 points as Spanish Fork
jumped to an early lead and beat Cottonwood in a three-point
shooting demonstration by both teams.

Cottonwood's best moment: Tyson Reynolds scored 20 for
Cottonwood and Raymond Chavez had 18. The Colts hit 10
three-point baskets, but didn't seem to play much defense. How do
you give up 90 points in 32 minutes?

Spanish Fork's best moment: Lewis is only 6-foot-3, but he's the
Dons "big man." He scored a lot, but he also was able to dish to
his teammate outside. Taylor Jones had 14 points, Ren
Williamson and Gavin Hales 13 and Adam Duke 12.

Statistical leaders:  Check this out. Cottonwood hit 12
three-pointers, but was just 6-of-17 from the free-throw line.
Spanish Fork did the same: 10 treys, but just 16-30 from the line.

What we learned from this game: This game got out of hand for
Cottonwood. The Colts have shown they like to shoot, but this
became a track meet and Spanish Fork won decisively. Hillcrest
won't let the Colts play this week Friday.

Next: Cottonwood takes on Hillcrest at home on Friday (Dec. 5).
Spanish Fork plays at Mountain View the same night.

Nov. 25 - Taylorsville 49, Cottonwood 47

Story of the game: Jordan Edgington scored 20 points as the
Warriors held off a Cottonwood comeback to take the narrow
non-region road win in both team's season opener.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts lived at the three-point line
as 10 of their 15 field goals were from beyond the arc. Cottonwood
hit two straight near the end to narrow the gap to two points. But,
with the home crowd on its feet, they couldn't get closer.

Taylorsville's best moment: This was a good opening game, and
was close the entire way. Led by Edgington and Andrew Stephens,
who had 11 points, Taylorsville led by eight late in the game and
held on.

Statistical leaders: Neither team could shoot free throws.
Taylorsville was 11-21 and Cottonwood 7-14. The game was tied
23-all at halftime. Tyson Reynolds led the Colts with nine points,
while Ivan Barisic and Raymond Chavez had seven.

What we learned from this game: The Colts have pretty much a
new team this year, and this was a "winnable" game. Cottonwood
has to develop more inside play, and win future close games.
There will be plenty in Region 6 play.

Next: Cottonwood takes on Spanish Fork at home on Tuesday.
Taylorsville
has a home game against Granger.
