Nov. 21 - Timpview 34, Cottonwood 28
Story of the game - RB Levi Te'o scored four touchdowns as
Timpview took advantage of a blocked punt to rally past
Cottonwood and claim its third straight 4-A state football title.
Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts trailed 21-7 at one point,
but QB Steve Romero hit WR Alo Moli a couple of times and RB Isi
Sofele shredded the Thunderbirds' defense to eventually gain a
28-21 lead. But Cottonwood never threatened after that.
Timpview's best moment - Trailing 28-21, Xavier Su'a Filo blocked
a punt that QB Casey Rumsey scored on a 10-yard run to tie the
game. Teo', who rushed for 85 yards on 24 carries and caught 3
passes for 110 yards, scored with over 10 minutes left to take the
lead. A missed extra point, though, helped this game go down to
the wire.
What we learned from this game - Cottonwood had its chances to
dethrone the mighty T-Birds. Afterward, Timpview coach
complimented Cottonwood, saying the Colts were the only team
that could match up with them.
Next - The championship game ends the Utah high school football
season.

Nov. 14 - Cottonwood 19, Pine View 14
Story of the game - RB Isi Sofele rushed for 139 yards and scored
three touchdowns, but it was the defense that made the big plays,
holding off a Pine View comeback that allowed Cottonwood to
advance to the 4-A title game.
Cottonwood's best moment - All of Sofele's scores came in the
first half, and the Colts led 19-0 at halftime. Pine View rallied, but
LB Jason Bilanzich stopped PV's Justin Ence on a fourth-down run
late in the game that finally secured the win.
Pine View's best moment - The Panthers had a great rallied (the
second time in three weeks an opponent has come back against
the Colts). Ence, who had 144 yardson 25 carries, ended up being
8 inches short of a first down at the Colts' 3-yard line.
What we learned from this game - We finally got the 4-A title game
we thought we would get, but it wasn't easy. Both Cottonwood and
Timpview have "chinks in their armor." Next week is the game the
Colts have been waiting for. We'll see which team shows up.
Next - Cottonwood advances to play Timpview in the 4-A final at
2:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The game will likely
define the careers for many seniors.

Nov. 7 - Cottonwood 44, Bonneville 7
Story of the game - QB Steve Romero passed for 290 yards and
three TDs, and the Colts defense came through with with an INT
return for a touchdown and a safety en route to an easy 4-A
quarterfinal victory over Bonneville.
Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts jumped out early. Romero
hit Spencer Larsen on a TD pass, and Isi Sofele scored on a short
run. It was 21-0 minutes later when sophomore James
Washington intercepted a screen pass and ran it in for a score.
Bonneville's best moment - Down 21-0, QB Todd Aubrey led the
Lakers on a long drive. Helped by two Colt personal foul penalties,
the Lakers scored on a short run by Austin Land.
What we learned from this game - We are moving closer to that
expected 4-A final between Timpview and Cottonwood. The Colts
just have to get by revenge-minded Pine View next.
Next - Cottonwood advances to the 4-A semifinals and will play
Pine View, a team it defeated 52-23 earlier this season. Bonneville
is done for the season.

Oct. 31 - Cottonwood 31, Orem 24
Story of the game - Isi Sofele ran for 124 yards and scored three
touchdowns, and QB Steve Romero threw for 250 yards, but the
real story was how Orem rallied in the fourth quarter and almost
took down the mighty Colts.
Cottonwood's best moment - The first 3/4 of the game belonged to
the Colts, who led 24-0 entering the final period. Cottonwood
dominated time of possession. In the first half, the Colts ran 45
plays, compared to 19 for Orem. The only thing they were missing
were big plays. Sofele's longest run, for example, was 13 yards.
Orem's best moment - The Tigers scored on the first play of the
fourth quarter, and never gave up. QB Josh Hamblin was on fire.
He completed several long throws, and made first downs on a
3rd-and-long and 4th-and-long to keep drives going. After Orem's
final drive failed, the Tiger fans who attended the game gave them
a standing ovation.
What we learned from this game - Who can really say if
Cottonwood overlooked Orem? But Coach Cecil Thomas said it
was a good wake-up call for the Colts. It was also good to see a
good first-round playoff game.
Next - Cottonwood advances and will play host to Bonneville on
Nov. 7 (for 4-A playoff pairings, click here). Orem is finished for the
season.

Oct. 23 - Cottonwood 49, Olympus 14
Story of the game - Isi Sofele ran for 141 yards and three TDs, and
QB Steve Romero tossed a couple of scoring passes to Alo Moli as
Cottonwood throttled Olympus in the regular-season finale for both
teams.
Cottonwood's best moment - This game was over early.
Cottonwood led 35-0 midway through the first quarter, scoring on
short drives. The Colts led 49-0 at halftime and reserves filled the
game in the second half.

Oly's best moment - Reserve QB Lance McGavin entered the game in the second half and threw TD passes to Spencer Hille and Will
Pannier.
.What we learned from this game - The Colts have been gearing up for post-season and Region 6 opponents haven't tested them much.
They are likely a shoe-in to reach the semifinals as their next two playoff games will be at home.
Next - Cottonwood advances to the 4-A playoffs, where it will play host to Orem. Olympus is done for the season.

Oct. 15 - Cottonwood 42, Granger 6
Story of the game - Isi Sofele ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns, and the Colts' defense was its usual self. The difference might
have been Cottonwood's special teams, which came through with a punt return for a touchdown by Kyle Aberton and a blocked punt return
by Mafua for another score.
Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts jumped to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter as Isi Sofele ran for a score and QB Steve Romero hit
Jason Lundquist for another TD. The special-teams scores came in the opening quarter, too.
Granger's best moment - This would have had to be a special night for Granger to have a chance. RB Manu Samani broke loose for a
48-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. The Lancers held Cottonwood to one score after halftime.
What we learned from this game - The Colts are riding high and have clinched the top spot in Region 6. They'll be playing at home in the
4-A playoffs and have their sights on Timpview.
Next - Cottonwood finishes the season with a home game against Olympus. Granger still has a chance for a playoff berth but has to beat
Cyprus.

Oct. 10 - Cottonwood 42, East 26
Story of the game - RB Isi Sofele rushed for 166 yards on 33 carries and Jason Bilanzich recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass
as Cottonwood built a big lead and handily beat East in a Region 6 game.
Cottonwood's best moment - Cottonwood led 7-0 when Bilanzich recovered a fumble and pitched it to teammate Jason Lundquist, who
ran for a score. On East's next play, the Leopards fumbled again and Bilanzich recovered. He pitched it (again) to a teammate, but he was
tackled.
East's best moment - Trailing 36-0, East rallied behind QB Danny Tuai, who threw touchdown passes to Andrew Williams and Taylor
Swensen, and also ran for two others.
What we learned from this game - Cottonwood will be the Region 6 champion. East now will likely have to beat rival West in order to earn
the No. 2 seed.
Next - Cottonwood travels to play Granger. East returns home to take on Cyprus.

Oct. 3 - Cottonwood 32, Highland 21
Story of the game - QB Steve Romero threw three long touchdown passes, which helped offset five turnovers, and the Colts built a big
lead and held on to beat Highland. The win set up what will likely be the Region 6 championship game next week.
Cottonwood's best moment - Romero had an off night, but his receivers (Alo Moli, Isi Sofele and Jason Lundquist) made him look good
with catches and long runs. The Colts' defense also played well as five turnovers would usually result in a loss for most teams.
Highland's best moment - The Rams' defense kept them in the game. Muli Kinikini and Peter Ferrin returned fumbles for touchdowns and
Highland picked off three Romero passes.
What was learned from the game - This was the first step in Cottonwood's bid for the region title. Next week will likely decide it.
Highland's scores were the first points the Colts have given up in region. The defense, however, was only responsible for giving up one
TD and it came against Cottonwood reserves.
Next - Cottonwood returns home to play East. Highland plays at Cyprus.

Sept. 26 - Cottonwood 40, West 0
Story of the game - Isi Sofele rushed for 138 yards and scored three touchdowns, and also showed his punt return talents as Cottonwood
roared to a 40-0 halftime lead and coasted to its Region 6 win over West.
Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts scored 26 points in the second quarter. QB Steve Romero was connecting on his passes, but
Sofele also was electric every time he touched the ball. The Colts held West to just one first down in the opening half.
West's best moment - Panthers coach Randy Schreiter admitted his team was outplayed the entire game. West did manage a decent
drive late in the game, but was turned away at the 2-yard line.
What was learned from the game - This was Cottonwood's third straight shutout win. The Colts are on a mission to win the 3-A title. This
was homecoming for Cottonwood, and now the Colts play at Highland, which handed the Colts their only region loss last year.
Next - Cottonwood plays at Highland. West returns home to take on Cyprus.

Sept. 19 - Cottonwood 37, Cyprus 0
Story of the game - QB Steve Romero passed for 165 yards and four TDs, and RB Isi Sofele had 130 yards rushing, but it was the Colts'
defense that turned this game into a rout.
Cottonwood's best moment - For the second straight week, a Region 6 opponent was no match for the Colts. Cottonwood led 28-0 at
halftime. The defense also got into the act, recording a fourth-quarter safety.
Cyprus' best moment - Not much to report. The Pirates were held to 12 total yards, and were shut out for the third time in four weeks. In
fact, they've not scored on their home field this season. Still, maybe East and Highland are the only region opponents that will be able to
give Cottonwood a game this season.
What was learned from the game - Cyprus scored 31 points last week, but Cottonwood is on a mission to win the 4-A state title. The
Colts did it with defense. These types of wins give coach Cecil Thomas a chance to let everyone play.
Next - The Colts return home to play West. Cyprus has another home game against Murray.
Links - The Deseret News had a reporter at the game. To read the D-News story, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune's brief, click
here.
Sept. 12 - Cottonwood 42, Murray 0
Story of the game - RB Isi Sofele ran for three touchdowns and caught a pass for another as the Colts had an easy time beating Murray in
their Region 6 opener. The Colts started reserve QB Crosby Jensen in the game as usual starter Steve Romero was sidelined for a team
indiscretion.
Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts led just 14-0 at halftime. But Jensen connected with Sofele on a 60-yard TD pass, then hit Alo
Moli for a 36-yard score to open up the game. Jensen was 6-for-10 for 145 yards for Cottonwood.
Murray's best moment - The Spartans knew they would need a miracle to win this game, and the defense fared well in the first half to
keep the game close. It's interesting that these two schools are just two miles apart but there is such a difference between them.
What was learned from the game - This was a "name the score" type of game. Cottonwood won it handily last year and seemed to take it
easy on its neighbor. The Colts are a candidate to win the 4-A title. Murray is obviously rebuilding.
Next - The Colts travel to play Cyprus in another Region 6 game. Murray will play host to East.
Links - There was no media coverage of the game. To read the Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune story, click

Sept. 5 - Cottonwood 52, Pine View 23
Story of the game - Steve Romero passed for 290 yards and Isi Sofele had 190 yards on 25 carries, as well as a 71-yard punt return as
the Colts won the battle of ranked 4-A teams in a convincing way.
Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts dominated from the start. In the first quarter, Sofele and Romero had TD runs and Romero
connected with WR Alo Moli on a 26-yard scoring pass.
Pine View's best moment - Much of Pine View's offensive yardage came in the second half on a couple of big plays. Running back Villiami
Hafoka had an 80-yard touchdown run and QB Justin Ence scored the team's first touchdown on a 68-yard run.
What was learned from the game? Cottonwood has been on fire since the start, and has the talent to roll through the season. UCLA
offensive coordinator Norm Chow and USC offensive line coach Pat Ruel both attended Friday's game.
Next - Cottonwood starts Region 6 play at winless Murray. Pine View plays at Las Vegas.

Aug. 29 - Cottonwood 40, Layton 36
Story of the game - Isi Sofele ran for 92 yards on 11 carries. More importantly, he had two TDs in the game's final minutes as Cottonwood
rallied to beat Layton in a battle between 4-A and 5-A powers. Layton held a huge lead in time of possession, but couldn't hold on to the
win.
Cottonwood's best moment - Coach Cecil Thomas said the team knows how to win in the fourth quarter. This game had everything, but it
was the Colts who seemed to have the better conditioning and rallied for the big win.
Layton's best moment - After Cottonwood ran the opening kickoff back for a TD, Layton returned the favor when Shea Kopecky tied the
game with a 97-yard return. Cottonwood led 26-7 at one point, but the Lancers rallied for a 10-point lead, then just seemed to quit.
What was learned from the game? Cottonwood believes it has a special team, and a win over a 5-A power on the road can only help the
Colts' momentum. It marked the second straight game the Colts' offense had scored 40 or more points.
Next - Cottonwood has another big game, playing host to Pine View. Layton plays at Jordan.
Links - The Deseret News had a reporter at the game. To read the game story, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune's article, click here.
Aug. 22 - Cottonwood 41, Clearfield 10
Story of the game - QB Steve Romero comes out in mid-season form, throwing for 266 yards and three touchdowns, including two to
Ryan Lundquist. Shifty running back Isi Sofele ran for 128 yards on 14 carries.
Cottonwood's best moment - Sofele takes a short pass from Romero in the second quarter, and squirts through the defense on a
60-yard run. When it appears he will be tackled, he laterals to 6-3, 275-pound lineman John Martinez, who rambles for five more before he
is tackled. It takes three guys to bring him down. Maybe more importantly ... how did a guy his size get downfield so quickly?
Clearfield's best moment - After Cottonwood's opening score in the first quarter, Justin Parkinson returns a kickoff 98 yards, but a penalty
nullifies the touchdown. It was a great run, but the flag hurt the Falcons' momentum. Future opponents should watch for Parkinson.
What was learned from the game? Cottonwood is probably as good - or better - than advertised. Romero and Sofele have a good
offensive line. The Colts have a tough preseason schedule, so it should prepare them well for Region 6. Clearfield isn't as bad as the
score indicated, but the Falcons lost interest in the second half.
Next - Cottonwood plays at 5-A power Layton. Clearfield is at home against Bountiful.
