Nov. 6 - Alta 37, Cottonwood 13

Story of the game - Quarterback Jordan Brown Brown passed for 424
yards, including 16 straight completions at one point, and the Hawks
broke away with a big third quarter to advance to the 5A state football
semifinals at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Cottonwood's best moment - With the exception of one turnover, the
Colts played a great first quarter, which ended tied 3-3. QB Crosby
Jensen found WR Tim Glenn open, and RB Nadan Hosea gained most
of his yardage.

Alta's best moment - Leading 16-6 at halftime, Alta scored three
straight touchdowns in the third quarter. The big play was a 70-yard TD
pass from Brown to Tyron Morris on a broken play. Brown consistently
found his receivers open in Cottonwood's secondary.

What we learned from this game - Cottonwood tested itself with a
tough schedule all season, and showed improvement from its 59-20
loss on opening night, but it wasn't enough. Alta's depth and WRs
made the difference.

Next - Cottonwood finished with an 8-4 record. Alta advances to play
Bingham in one 5A semifinal.

Oct. 30 - Cottonwood 23, Viewmont 7

Story of the game - Nadan Hosea rushed for 201 yards, and
Cottonwood's defense put the clamps on Viewmont, forcing two
second-half turnovers, to lift the Colts to a first-round win in the 5A
playoffs.

Cottonwood's best moment - This game was closer than the score
indicated. Cottonwood led just 10-7 until QB Crosby Jensen hit Hudson
on a 33-yard scoring pass with four minutes left. Hosea added another
TD in the final minutes. Viewmont's offense never mounted a serious
threat after halftime.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings only touchdown came on an
80-yard run by Anthony Tuli late in the second quarter that cut
Cottonwood's lead to 10-7. Viewmont had 96 yards total offense in the
second half, and most of it came on its first drive.

What we learned from this game - Cottonwood advanced with a
combination of offense and defense. Hosea was a workhorse, with 42
carries.

Next - Cottonwood will play at Alta Nov. 6. Viewmont is done for the
season.

Oct. 22 - Cottonwood 52, Cyprus 8

Story of the game - QB Crosby Jensen threw three first-quarter
touchdowns to Korbin Dooley, and Cottonwood blew out Cyprus to
clinch a first-round home game in the upcoming 5A playoffs.

Cottonwood's best moment - Jensen had TD passes to Chandler
Hudson and Tim Glenn as Cottonwood led 45-0 at halftime. The Colts
defense also dominated, holding Cyprus without a score until late in
the contest.

Cyprus's best moment - The Pirates scored in the fourth quarter on an
8-yard run by Albert Wolfgramm. Cyprus was complimented for helping
Cottonwood participate in a breast-cancer fundraiser, and both team's
supported by wearing pink in various parts of their uniform.

What we learned from this game - The Colts' offense has played well
the last two games, and that should help in the playoffs.

Next - Cottonwood plays host to Viewmont in the first round of the 5A
playoffs.
Cyprus is done for the season.

Oct. 16 - Cottonwood 54, Granger 0

Story of the game - RB Nadan Hosea rushed for 139 yards and QB
Crosby Jensen passed for two scores, but the difference was
Cottonwood's defense, which shut out Granger in a Region 2 game.

Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts dominated the game. They
were probably reeling from last week's loss. Hosea had a great game,
and he and Jensen put together a run-pass combination that Granger
couldn't stop. The 54 points was a season high for Cottonwood, and it
was the Colts' first shutout this season, too.

Granger's best moment - The Lancers were on a two-game winning
streak, but the offense couldn't manage any success in this game. It
was Granger's first shutout of the season.

What we learned from this game - The Colts won't win the Region 2
title this season, and that had to bother them. You can bet coach Cecil
Thomas had a lot to say and that seemingly inspired the team.

Next - Cottonwood plays host to Cyprus. Granger ends its season at
West.

Oct. 9 - Hunter 24, Cottonwood 14

Story of the game - La'au Tanuvasa rushed for 166 yards and Hunter
took advantage of several Cottonwood mistakes - penalties and
turnovers - and shocked the Colts to take over first place in Region 2.

Cottonwood's best moment - After Hunter went up 3-0 early, the Colts
moved the ball quickly and went ahead on a 39-yard touchdown run by
Nadan Hosea. The Colts didn't score again until the game had already
been decided.

Hunter's best moment - The Wolverines had good karma from the
beginning, when they recovered a Cottonwood fumble on the kickoff.
Hunter kept the ball for five minutes, then Jake Jex booted a field goal.
Hunter led 17-7 at halftime.

What we learned from this game - This result was a surprise, but it
shows that Cottonwood has to play hard to win every game. The
biggest difference between this year's team and last year has to be the
defense, which is giving up 25 points per game.

Next - Cottonwood travels to play Granger. Hunter goes to Skyline.

Sept. 30 - Cottonwood 32, West 9

Story of the game - Kyle Aberton returned the opening kickoff 80 yards
for a touchdown, and the Cottonwood defense didn't allow a point until
the fourth quarter en route to a Region 2 victory over the West Panthers.

Cottonwood's best moment - Aberton gave the Colts a 7-0 lead, and
also the momentum. Cottonwood had two long scoring drives - of 17
and 18 plays - and dominated time of possession. Stephen Carter
finished with 92 yards rushing, and Konisi Hosea had 73.

West's best moment - The Panthers finally broke through in the final
quarter when Tana ran 47 yards for a touchdown. Later, Alexander
Mitkus added a 34-yard field goal.

What we learned from this game - The Colts dominated along the
offensive and defensive lines. West took away much of Cottonwood's
short passing game, but the Colts seemed to adjust.

Next - Cottonwood travels to Hunter in a game that has implications.
West travels to Murray.

Sept. 25 - Cottonwood 43, Skyline 28

Story of the game - QB Crosby Jensen was hot, completing his first 16
throws, and ended the game with 323 yards passing and four
touchdowns as Cottonwood took sole possession of first place in
Region 2 with a homecoming win over Skyline.

Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts' defense finally stopped
Skyline in the second half, and the offense broke a 28-28 halftime
deadlock.

Skyline's best moment - The Eagles weren't able to move the ball as
efficiently as Cottonwood, but RB Algernon Brown compensated by
completing two long touchdown passes to Brian Orr on halfback option
plays. Orr finished with eight catches for 217 yards.

What we learned from this game - The outcome of this game will
likely play a big role in the region championship. Cottonwood proved to
be the better team, and its offense was unstoppable. RB Nadan
Hosea, however, was hurt and may be out 1-2 weeks.

Next - Cottonwood travels to play West. Skyline returns home to take on
Cyprus.

Sept. 18 - Bingham 45, Cottonwood 29

Story of the game - Braden Anderson returned the second-half kickoff
99 yards for a touchdown, and later picked up a fumble and rambled 70
yards that set up another score, as Bingham turned back Cottonwood
in a non-region game.

Cottonwood's best moment - RB Nadan Hosea had his best game of
the season, rushing for 203 yards on 29 carries. He also scored one
touchdown. QB Crosby Jensen threw two TD passes as the Colts
never gave up even after trailing 45-14.

Bingham's best moment - Cottonwood narrowed Bingham's lead to
17-14 at halftime, and seemingly had the momentum until Anderson
livened up the Miners' sideline with that kickoff return. That started a
21-point third quarter that put the game out of reach.

What we learned from this game - This was phase 2 of Cottonwood's
plan to compete with 5A's best, and the Colts came out on the short
end again. At least they know how much they need to improve to
challenge for the state title.

Next - Cottonwood starts its Region 2 schedule at home against
Skyline. Bingham takes on Kearns in its Region 3 opener.

televised locally, too. To read the Deseret News article,

Sept. 11 - Cottonwood 52, Murray 16

Story of the game - QB Crosby Jensen passed for four scores, and RB
Nadan Hosea ran for three more as Cottonwood rallied from an early
scare by Murray and beat their neighbors in a Region 2 game.

Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts were down 16-7, but then got
the offense going. They were unstoppable after that, and the defense
came alive, too. The tipping point was the second quarter, when
Cottonwood scored 35 points, showing it can explode likes its past
offenses did.

Murray's best moment - The Spartans are better than before, and
surprised a lot of people early. QB Dee Hamala threw a 20-yard TD
pass to Julian Moore and then outran Cottonwood's defense on a
59-yard run. Despite the loss, this game should help with Murray's
confidence.

What we learned from this game - Yes, the score indicates a blowout,
but it showed that times are changing in this "rivalry." This game may
have been difficult for Cottonwood to focus on because its schedule to
date has been so difficult.

Next - Cottonwood takes on 5A power Bingham in a non-region game.
Murray plays host to Granger in Region 2.

locally on radio. To read the Deseret News brief,

Sept. 4 - Cottonwood 35, Pine View 0

Story of the game - QB Crosby Jensen passed for 213 yards and three
touchdowns as Cottonwood convincingly defeated former 4A rival Pine
View - but at a cost. A fight broke out between the two teams late in the
game it will likely force the UHSAA to get involved.

Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts had a nice game of alternating
passes with runs by shifty running back Nadan Hosea, who finished
with 162 yards. Cottonwood's defense held Pine View in check,
dominating the line of scrimmage.

Pine View's best moment - This was coach Ray Hosner's 100th game
at Pine View and nothing went right. It's possible, however, that the
coaches for both teams used their experience to prevent the fight from
getting further out of hand.

What we learned from this game - Cottonwood used its physical play
to dominate, but also finished with over 170 yards in penalties (for the
second straight week), including several personal fouls. Coach Cecil
Thomas had to escort his first-team players off the field with seven
minutes left, and the reserves finished the game. One Pine View player
was ejected. We'll see how the UHSAA resolves this matter.

Next - Cottonwood opens Region 2 play at home against Murray. Pine
View plays host to Desert Hills.

Aug. 28 - Cottonwood 34, Sky View 20

Story of the game - QB Crosby Jensen passed for three touchdowns
and RB Stephen Carter rushed for 138 yards as Cottonwood built a big
lead and turned back Sky View in a non-region game.

Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts started early, as Spencer
Larsen's nice punt return set them up for their first touchdown.
Cottonwood led 28-0 in the second quarter and frustrated Sky View QB
Kyler Carlsen during that time.

Sky View's best moment - The Bobcats rallied  and made the game
interesting. They got a touchdown just before halftime and opened the
second half with another score. Carlsen was 21-52 passing, and ran
for 68 yards, but it was not enough.

What we learned from this game - The Colts earned their first win, but
they're still rusty. They missed several opportunities, and had 170
yards in penalties.

Next - Cottonwood travels to play Pine View. Sky View entertains
Jordan.

Aug. 21 - Alta 59, Cottonwood 20

Story of the game - Jordan Brown threw for 200 yards and two
touchdowns, and the Alta running game showed it was alive and well
as the Hawks welcomed Cottonwood to Utah's 5A ranks with a
decisive thrashing on their home field.

Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts were confident, but
overmatched. QB Crosby Jensen threw a couple of TD passes, and
Cottonwood closed the margin to 24-14 early in the third quarter, but
that was as close as it could get.

Alta's best moment - The Hawks' line dominated on both sides of the
ball. Brown ran for 57 on the game's first play and Alta led 14-0 just
minutes into the game. RB Bryan Finnerty ran for 107 yards on 16
carries, and Alta also intercepted a pass for a score.

What we learned from this game - This game was decided on the
line, and Alta won. The Hawks also mentioned how they were not
respected by Cottonwood, but who knows where they got that? It was a
good matchup, and I hope they play again.

Next - Cottonwood returns home to play Sky View. Alta travels to take
on another 5A rival -
Bingham.
