Feb. 24 - Sky View 49, Cottonwood 22

Story of the game: Amy Andrus scored 19 points and Sky View broke
away from Cottonwood's stall tactic with full-court pressure and that
helped the Bobcats sew up the win in the first round of the 4A state
tournament.

Cottonwood's key moment: The Colts held on to the ball and it kept
them close in the first quarter. After a while, though, Cottonwood had
to play "catch up" and Sky View dominated. Fehi Fakailoatonga led the
Colts with eight points, while Angie Schwartz had seven.

Sky View's key moment: The heavily favored Bobcats grew frustrated
at having to play at a slower pace, and it wasn't until later that they
employed a full-court defense that caused turnovers. Sky View
outscored Cottonwood 26-7 in the second half. Kelsey Naylor added
10 points.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood didn't attempt a shot until three
minutes had passed in the game. The win improved Sky View's
record to 22-0. Cottonwood shot 3-20 in the second half.

What we learned from this game: The Colts felt slowing the tempo
was the only way they could compete, and it worked. Sky View had to
deal with that tactic twice earlier this season.

Next: Cottonwood is finished for the season. Sky View advanced to
play Payson.

Feb. 17 - Highland 42, Cottonwood 40

Story of the game: Anatoa Lauti scored nine points, but it was Chanel
Roe's rebound basket as time expired that gave Highland a victory
Cottonwood in the final Region 6 game for both teams.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts played well, but lost this
thriller. Angie Schwartz scored 12 points and Cottonwood outscored
Highland in every quarter but the third.

Highland's best moment: The Rams trailed 23-18 at halftime, but
came out quickly and outscored Cottonwood 16-5 in the third period.
The game was tied 40-40 when Roe scored the winning basket and
set off the Rams' celebration on Cottonwood's floor.

Statistical notes: Lauti had three treys for Highland. Cottonwood was
15-21 from the free-throw line; Highland was just 4-6. Fehi
Fakailoatonga had nine points for Cottonwood.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood last its final two
region games. Ironically, this was only their fourth "close" game of the
season (five points or less).

Next: Cottonwood and Highland both advance to the 4A state
tournament at SLCC. Cottonwood takes on 4A power Sky View on
Feb. 24.
Highland will play Mountain Crest.

Story of the game: Annie Canevari scored 10 points and Olympus hit
its free throws late in the game to rally past Cottonwood in a Region 6

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts played a good first half. They
were looking for an upset win that could move them up in the
standings. Alyssa Moreno led the Colts with 10 points, while
McKenzie Anderson had 10.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 22-18 at halftime, but came out
and dominated the third quarter to take a lead they never relinquished.
Heather Giffin added nine points and Amanda Diblee had eight.

Statistical notes: Oly was 13-20 from the free-throw line; Cottonwood
was just 4-11. Anderson had two three-pointers for Cottonwood. Oly
had none.

What we learned from this game: The loss put Cottonwood clinched
fifth place for Cottonwood since West already owns the tiebreaker
between the two schools.

home the same night.

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz scored 19 points and Fehi
Fakailoatonga added 16 as Cottonwood downed Cyprus and earned
its third straight Region 6 victory.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts are on a roll. They started
quickly, jumping to an 11-5 first-quarter lead and extending it to 25-11
at halftime. Schwartz was the Colts' big outside threat with three treys.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates made a nice rally in the third
quarter to cut the margin to eight points, but ran out of gas. Sanshae
Rasmussen had seven points to lead Cyprus in scoring.

Statistical notes: Cyprus' leading scorer, Kirstie Henriod, was held to
five points. It marked the first time this season she hasn't led the team
in scoring.

What we learned from this game: This is the time third time this
season Cottonwood has won three consecutive games. The Colts
have clinched a berth in the 4A state tournament.

home the same night.

game away by outscoring East 13-4 in the third period. Cottonwood
emptied its bench and 11 different players scored.

East's best moment: East was still in the game until it only managed
four points in the pivotal third quarter. Laura Kruse was the Leopards'
top scorer with nine points.

Statistical notes: East connected on just 2-10 free throws;
Cottonwood was 8-16. Jewel Peterson had eight points for
Cottonwood, including two three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: The win was Cottonwood's
second straight and now the Colts just need to win one more game to
clinch a 4A state tournament berth.

West the same night.

expanding the advantage until Granger rallied in the final period. The
win ended a two-game losing streak and started an "easy" portion of
their schedule where they need to win some games.

outscoring Cottonwood 16-10, but couldn't get close enough. Martha
Haiola had 12 points, while Ryna Leota added 10.

Cottonwood was 12-20. Haiola had three treys for Granger. Vahine

Jan. 30 - West 57, Cottonwood 48

Story of the game: Jolisha Branch had a season-high 14 points as
West broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and downed
Cottonwood to move into fourth place in Region 6.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts rallied from a 13-12 deficit to
take a three-point lead at halftime. Angie Schwartz topped Cottonwood
with 12 points, while Fehi Fakailoatonga had 11.

West's best moment: The game was tied 32-32 entering the fourth
period when the Panthers broke loose. Amy Christensen added 12
points and Ashley Quarles and Destynee Rios had 11.

Statistical notes: Quarles and Rios had three treys each as West had
seven for the game. West scored 25 points in the final quarter. West
was 8-13 from the free-throw line; Cottonwood was 14-21.

What we learned from this game: The loss dropped Cottonwood into
fifth place in region, and the state tournament only accepts the top five
teams.

Next: Cottonwood plays host to Granger on Feb. 3. West travels to
Highland the same night.

Jan. 27 - Murray 58, Cottonwood 48

Story of the game: Mariah Duran scored 13 of her season-high 26
points in the fourth quarter as Murray held off Cottonwood in a Region
6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts played well, but just couldn't
keep up with Murray in the final period. Angie Schwartz was
Cottonwood's top scorer with 17 points. Fehi Fakailoatonga added 12.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans led most of the game, holding
a 41-37 advantage entering the final quarter. Duran hit three of her
seven three-pointers in the final period. Lyndi Miller added 13 points.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was just 12-24 from the free-throw line;
Murray was 9-14. Murray had nine three-pointers. Angie Schwartz had
two of Cottonwood's four treys.

What we learned from this game: This was the last of three straight
road games for Cottonwood. The Colts lost to Murray by 25 points in
the opener, so perhaps they've improved.

Next: Cottonwood takes on West at home on Jan. 27. Murray plays
host to
Olympus the same night.

Jan. 23 - Cottonwood 63, Granger 34

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz, Fehi Fakailoatonga and Karlee
Paloukos scored 15 points apiece as Cottonwood jumped to a big
first-quarter and had no trouble beating Granger in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: Paloukos' total was a season high and
her four three-point baskets helped spur the Colts to a 21-6 lead after
the first quarter. They did it again - by the same amount - in the third
period to turn the game into a rout.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers trailed 54-25 and, with both
teams substituing freely, played Cottonwood even after that. Martha
Haiola was the only big scorer, with 22 points.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 11-20 from the free-throw line;
Granger was 7-13. The win ended a two-game losing streak for the
Colts.

What we learned from this game: It's the midway point of the Region
6 season and Cottonwood is in fourth place, which would be good
enough for a tournament berth.

same night.

Jan. 20 - Highland 57, Cottonwood 45

Story of the game: Chanel Roe scored 23 points and Mixsa Kafi
connected on six straight free throws late in the game to lift Highland
past Cottonwood in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts stayed close, and had a nice
run at Highland in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough. Fehi
Fakailoatonga had 11 points for Cottonwood.

Highland's best moment: The Rams led most of the way, but could
not put Cottonwood away until the end, when the Colts were forced to
foul. Highland hit 20-31 free throws.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 9-20 from the free-throw line.
Angie Schwartz had nine points for the Colts. Christobel Faka’osi had
nine for Highland. The win ended a streak of four straight close
games (2-2) for the Rams.

What we learned from this game: The loss dropped Cottonwood into
a tie for fourth place in the region standings. The top five will make it to
the state tournament.

Next: Cottonwood goes to Granger on Jan. 23. Highland plays at

Jan. 16 - Olympus 34, Cottonwood 18

Story of the game: Heather Giffin and Kaitlyn Adamson scored nine
points each, but it was the Titans' defense that suffocated Cottonwood
and allowed Olympus to claim the Region 6 victory.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts finally got some offense in the
fourth quarter, scoring half of their point total. Fehi Fakailoatonga had
eight points for Cottonwood.

Oly's best moment: Olympus jumped out to an 11-3 first-quarter lead
and then held Cottonwood to just two points in the second quarter.
The Colts simply couldn't score. Oly was never headed.

Statistical notes: The 18 points is a season low for Cottonwood. Oly
led 16-5 at halftime. Cottonwood also did not make a three-point
basket.

What we learned from this game: A win could have put Cottonwood
into a tie for first place, but it didn't happen. The Colts' defense played
well, but the offense struggled. Now the Colts need to avoid a letdown.

Next: Cottonwood plays at Highland on Jan. 20. Olympus plays host
to
West the same night.

Jan. 13 - Cottonwood 43, Cyprus 31

Story of the game: Fehi Fakailoatonga scored a season-high 17
points as Cottonwood rolled to a big first-half lead and downed
Cyprus in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts' defense won this game,
holding Cyprus to 10 first-half points. Angie Schwartz added nine
points.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates played evenly with Cottonwood in
the second half, but there wasn't much of a comeback. Kristie Henriod
scored 14 points for lead Cyprus.

Statistical notes: There weren't many fouls called in this game.
Cyprus was 4-5 from the free-throw line and Cottonwood 6-8. Angie
Schwartz had nine points, including a pair of three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: After a slow start, the Colts have
rebounded and are now 3-1 in region play. They've held their
opponents to an average of 30 points the last three games.

Next: Cottonwood takes on Region 6 leader Olympus at home Jan.
16.
Cyprus goes the West the same night.

Jan. 9 - Cottonwood 35, East 30

Story of the game: McKenzie Anderson scored 12 points as
Cottonwood held off East in a game that had several momentum
changes.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts leaped to a 15-6 lead, let East
back into the game, and then had another burst in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was full of defense. Angie Schwartz added seven
points.

East's best moment: The Leopards made a good rally in the second
quarter that got them back into the game. Sarah Tyler led East with
nine points.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot badly from the free-throw line.
Cottonwood had three treys, while East had none. Since the region
opener against Murray, the Colts have played good defense.

What we learned from this game: Anderson is the fifth different Colt
to lead the team in scoring at some point this season. The more
players that can do that, the better.

Next: Cottonwood travels to Cyprus on Jan. 13. East plays host to
West the same night.

Jan. 6 - Cottonwood 40, West 29

Story of the game: Erika Nash had 12 points and Fehi Fakailoatonga
had 11 as Cottonwood broke out early this time and raced to a
comfortable win over West in a Region 6 game.

Cottonwood's best moment: Unlike the last game, the Colts broke
out early, scoring against West's zone defense and claimed an 11-2
lead. That was enough because they played pretty evenly after that.

West's best moment: The Panthers only scored 10 points in the first
half, but Valencia Manu helped the get offense moving better after that.
The deficit, however, was just too large.

Statistical notes: West had four three-pointers as Manu and Rikie
Gregg each had two. West shot just two free throws, and made one.
Cottonwood's defense held to West to a season-low point total.

What we learned from this game: After looking badly in their first
game, the Colts came back and won one on the road. This early, it's
still hard to tell the better teams.

Next: Cottonwood returns home to play East on Jan. 9. West travels to
Murray the same night.

Jan. 2 - Murray 56, Cottonwood 31

Story of the game: Lyndi White scored 16 points and Ame Miller
added 15 as Murray blew past Cottonwood in the first half and rolled
to an easy win in both team's Region 6 opener.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts were out of this game early,
and sophomore guard Angie Schwartz was the team's only offense,
with 20 points.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans had their long-range shooting
working well as they hit eight three-point baskets. Miller had five
herself, and Mariah Duran had two.

Statistical notes: Murray shot well from the free-throw line, too, hitting
10-13 shots, while Cottonwood was 5-14. Murray led 17-6 after one
quarter and 31-15 at halftime.

What we learned from this game: This was a tough way for
Cottonwood to start the region season, especially at home. This was
the Colts' worst loss of the season.

Next: Cottonwood travels to West on Jan. 6. Murray goes to Olympus.

Dec. 18 - Cottonwood 31, Jordan 29

Story of the game: Erika Nash, Dev Smith and Alyssa Moreno scored
six points apiece and helped spirit a fourth-quarter comeback as
Cottonwood edged Jordan in the Colts' final non-region game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts trailed 23-16 entering the final
quarter, but outscored Jordan 15-6 to take the victory.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers almost had this one.
Luciana Soares was the offensive star with 12 points - on four three-
point baskets.

Statistical notes: Soares' three-pointers were the only ones in the
game. The Diggers' 29 points was a season low. Cottonwood shot 9-
22 from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: A good win for Cottonwood, and
the Colts' closest game this season. Cottonwood finished non-region
play with a 3-1 road record. Jordan fell to 1-7 overall with the loss.

Next: Cottonwood is done until it opens region play Jan. 2 against
Murray. Jordan plays at Kearns Dec. 30.

Dec. 16 - Sky View 70, Cottonwood 43

Story of the game: Amy Andrus scored 23 points and Taylor Rock had
12 as Sky View built a 31-15 halftime lead and buried Cottonwood
with a great offensive performance.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts' three-game win streak was
over early, and had trouble scoring in the first half. Schwartz led
Cottonwood with 14 points.

Sky View's best moment: Andrus was a major player on offense and
the Bobcats played great defense. They built a lead early and then
slowly increased it.

Statistical notes: The 70 points were - by far - the most Cottonwood
has given up this season. Rock had three treys for Sky View. Erica
Nash and McKenzie Anderson each had two for Cottonwood.

What we learned from this game: Sky View is unbeaten and will
likely be a force in the 4A state tournament. Cottonwood is not there
yet, and now knows how much it needs to improve.

Next: Cottonwood plays at Jordan Dec. 18. Sky View starts a Southern
Utah road trip the same night.

Dec. 12 - Cottonwood 39, Hillcrest 27

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz scored 18 points and Cottonwood
put together another nice defensive effort and beat Hillcrest in a non-
region game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts' defense was the key, holding
Hillcrest to just seven first-half points and taking a 12-point lead. The
second half had more offense and the teams played evenly.

Hillcrest's best moment: Lexi Amundsen had been Hillcrest's big
scorer, but she had six points tonight. The Huskies had just 10 field
goals and were 5-15 from the free-throw line. An off night.

Statistical notes: Schwartz had three treys for Cottonwood. The Colts
hit just 10-24 free throws. The teams combined to score 28 points in
the fourth quarter, which was more than the entire first half. Hillcrest's
27-point performance was a season low.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood has won three
straight games and is doing it with defense, holding opponents to an
average of 29.0 points per game.

Next: Cottonwood takes on 4A power Sky View at home Dec. 16.
Hillcrest returns home to play Hunter the same night.

Dec. 11 - Cottonwood 37, Juan Diego 19

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz scored nine points and McKenzie
Anderson had eight to lead Cottonwood past Juan Diego in a non-
region game.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts took a 15-6 lead at halftime,
and then found their offense a little more in the second half. Anderson
hit a pair of three-pointers and Schwartz had one.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle could never find its
offensive rhythm. Brittany Coffer had nine points, and Lauren Tieg
added seven. No other player scored.

Statistical notes: The 19 points scored is a season low for Juan
Diego, and perhaps of any team within Utah. Coffer had three treys -
the only three-pointers made by either team.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood earned its second
straight win and, ironically, both have been on the road. Juan Diego
suffered its third straight defeat.

Next: Cottonwood returns home to take on Hillcrest tonight (Dec. 12).
Juan Diego has a home game against Waterford Dec. 16.

Dec. 5 - Cottonwood 48, Alta 41

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz and Fehi Fakailoatonga scored 11
points apiece and Cottonwood continued to improve its shooting
prowess and earning its first win of the season.

Cottonwood's best moment: The game was always close, and the
Colts actually trailed 31-29 at the end of the third quarter. They
outscored Alta 19-10 in the final period, thanks mostly to their 19-24
shooting from the free-throw line.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led 20-17 at halftime, and kept a
narrow lead until the final quarter. Becca Baudoin led Alta with a
game-high 18 points, all of which came on three-point baskets.
Morrison added. 10.

Statistical notes: The shots didn't fall as well for Alta in the final
quarter. Alta was 9-17 from the line.

What we learned from this game: For Cottonwood, the Colts showed
improvement once again, and this time it resulted in a win. Perhaps
playing back-to-back games paid off.

Next: Cottonwood travels to Juan Diego for a Dec. 11 game. Alta goes
back-to-back (at Copper Hills Dec. 10 and then a home game against
Layton a day later).

Story of the game: Vega scored 14 points, mostly from three-point
land, as Kearns rallied with a big second quarter to beat Cottonwood
and earn its first victory of the season.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts started well, and shot far
better than they did in the first game. Cottonwood claimed a 14-11
lead. The Colts played great defense in the third quarter, too, limiting
Kearns to just four points.

Kearns' best moment: With Vega and Ostberg as outside-shooting
threats, the Cougars were able to spread Cottonwood's defense. It
took them a while to get going, but Kearns got the momentum when
their shots fell.

Statistical notes: Angie Schwartz was Cottonwood's top scorer with
12 points. Fehi Fakailoatonga added eight. Kearns hit 9-20 from the
free-throw line as the Colts had to foul late again.

What we learned from this game: This was a good road win for
Kearns, which was destroyed the first time it traveled (to Lone Peak).
Cottonwood also played better.

Next: Cottonwood travels to play Alta Dec. 5. Kearns goes to Granger
on Dec. 9.

Nov. 26 - Grantsville 44, Cottonwood 32

Story of the game: Grantsville picked up where it left off last year, as
Marisa Robbins scored 12 points the Cowboys' easy win in both
team's season opener at Grantsville.

Cottonwood's best moment: The fourth quarter. Down 38-15, the
Colts rallied behind McKenna Tait, who had nine points, and Alyssa
Moreno, who added eight.  The Colts knew this would a tough game
as Grantsville came to Cottonwood last year and won.

Grantsville's best moment: The Cowboys dominated from the start,
claiming an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and expanded it to 27-11 at
halftime. Grantsville was able to put its reserves in the game in the
second half.

Statistical notes: Kelsi Wells had 10 points for Grantsville, including
a pair of three-pointers. Cottonwood did not make a three-pointer,
even though it must have tried some after trailing during the game.
The Cowboys made just 3-9 free throws. Cottonwood was 8-13 from
the line.

What we learned from this game: Grantsville might be as good as
last year. The jury is still out on the Colts, but losing this game in the
manner they did is not promising.

Next: Cottonwood returns for its home opener against Kearns Dec. 4.
Grantsville takes on Judge Memorial on Dec. 2.
