Feb. 22 - Murray 39, Cyprus 38

Story of the game: Cade Bullough's basket with eight seconds left
was the difference as Murray held off Cyprus to clinch the No. 3
seed in Region 2.

Cyprus' highlights: The Pirates used the scoring of Marquis
Newman, who scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth period.
They had a chance to win the game, but suffered a turnover in the
final seconds.

Murray's highlights: The Spartans led most of the game, and held
a 31-23 advantage entering the fourth quarter. David Collette, who
was double and triple-teamed most of the night, fouled out in the
fourth quarter. The Spartans won on a well-executed play and
Bullough hit the shot he'll remember the rest of his life.

Statistical notes: Mike Lombardo's three-pointer in the fourth
quarter really made a difference in this game. The Cyprus defense
clearly was set up to try to stop Collette. This was the only game all
season in which he didn't score in double figures.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus has shown a lot of
improvement during the season, and Murray was fortunate to
escape with a win, which ended its three-game losing streak.

Feb. 19 - Cyprus 39, Skyline 37

Story of the game: Marquis Newman scored 14 points and
teammate Isaac Johnson nailed a game-winning basket with two
seconds left to lift Cyprus past Skyline in each team's final Region
2 game of the season.

Cyprus' highlights: This was probably the biggest win of the
season for Cyprus. The Pirates celebrated because the win put
Cyprus in a lot better position to earn a 5A state tourney berth. Jazz
White added eight points and Johnson had seven.

Skyline's highlights: This game didn't mean anything in the
standings to Skyline, except to go into the state tournament on a
winning note. The Eagle started slowly, but rallied from an 11-point
deficit to tie the game in the third period. Brian Orr and Jaden
Jackson were the top scorers with nine points each.

Statistical notes: Jackson had his streak of scoring in double
figures end at 11 straight games. He did have the game's only
three-pointer. Cyprus had a big advantage in fouls and earned its
third win in the last four games.

What we learned from this game: This was clearly an upset win
and showed the rejuvenation of this team. Cyprus now owns a
two-game lead over Granger with two games to play.

Feb. 12 - Cyprus 58, Cottonwood 47

Story of the game: Marcus Bryce had a big game, with 14 points
and 11 rebounds, as Cyprus won its second straight game and
moved into good position to earn Region 6's final state tournament
spot.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates pulled ahead 16-7 in the first
quarter and never trailed. Isaac Johnson added 10 points and
Marquis Newman had nine points and nine rebounds.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts fell behind early, but
battled back to trail by just five points at halftime. Vlad Malugin
came off the bench to score a career high 15 points. Daniel
Kristensen had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Statistical notes: Cyprus was 14-25 from the free-throw line.
Cottonwood was just 4-9. Cyprus was credited with 14 assists on
18 baskets, meaning the Pirates passed the ball well. Leading
scorer Korbin Dooley had seven points for Cottonwood.

What we learned from this game: This was a big win for the
Pirates, and marked the first time they beat a region team higher in
the standings. Perhaps playing six straight home games will pay
off.

Feb. 9 - Cyprus 60, Hunter 49

Story of the game: Landon Stauffer scored 13 points and Jazz
White had 10 as Cyprus blanked Hunter in the opening period and
went on to whip the Wolverines in a Region 2 game.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates never trailed, claiming an 11-0
lead by the end of the first period and building a 20-point margin at
one time. Cyprus emptied its bench and 10 players scored.

Hunter's best moment: Trailing 42-22, Hunter scored 27 points in
the final period to try to put a scare into the home team. Brett
Lunceford led with 15 points. The Wolverines nailed seven
three-point baskets.

Statistical notes: Stauffer and Colton Squire had a pair of
three-pointers for Cyprus. Squire has scored 29 of his 41 points
this season in the last four games. Hunter's 27-point effort in the
fourth quarter was its highest this season. Cyprus swept the
season series.

What we learned from this game: The Pirates needed this win,
and got it. They still have a chance to make the 5A state
tournament but need at least one more win to be safe.

Feb. 2 - West 55, Cyprus 39

Story of the game: Gatete Djuma had his best game of the
season, with 14 points and 12 rebounds, as West rallied to beat

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates started well, but fell apart after
that. Colton Squire had a season high 12 points. Marquis
Newman had eight points and eight assists.

West's best moment: The Panthers trailed after the first quarter,
but dominated afterward to build a 20-point lead. Tyrell Corbin had
13 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Jordan
Tanner added 12 points.

Statistical notes: This game was decided in the second and third
quarters, and West dominated. Both teams shot poorly from the
free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: The Pirates dropped their third
straight and their "hot streak" has apparently ended, even though
they're playing consecutive home games.

second straight 20+ game and fifth this season. Mitch Tate added
10 points.

Statistical notes: Cyprus shot 17-30 from the free-throw line.
Murray was 9-11. Cyprus trailed the entire game, yet made just
one three-pointer (by Austin Henriod). Murray outscored Cyprus
22-14 in the third quarter to build a 17-point lead.

What we learned from this game: The Pirates finished the first
half of the region season with a 2-4 record, and now has four
straight games at home. This is where Cyprus must make its
move.

enough. Isaac Johnson had 15 points and Landon Stauffer 13.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles scored a season high 29
points in the second quarter to earn a 41-28 lead. Jake Osterloh
had six rebounds as Skyline dominated that category.

had 17 points for Skyline. Marquis Newman had 10 points and a

lead. They really extended the margin in the final quarter. Cyprus
had a big advantage at the free-throw line.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers dominated the opening
quarter behind Deng Deng and Isaiah Tademy. This game was a
lot closer than the final score.

sources (Brennan Ray, Colton Squire and Johnson). Deng had 13

Dec. 12 - Taylorsville 47, Cyprus 44

line. Landon Stauffer and Marcus Bryce had six points each for
Cyprus. Jordan beat Taylorsville in the later game.

Dec. 1 - Highland 49, Cyprus 41

Story of the game - Sam Orchard scored 18 points as Highland
held off Cyprus, thanks to a big second quarter, in a non-region

three-pointers.

near the end. Basil Vetas had eight points and a team-high seven

and both teams were about 50 percent.
