Feb. 24 - Olympus 84, Cyprus 60

Story of the game: Connor Brady scored 19 points and Corbin
Green had 17 as Olympus had its best offensive output of the
season in beating Cyprus in both team's Region 6 finale.

Olympus' best moment: The Titans slowly built their lead with
great perimeter shooting, much like they've done all year. Oly had
11 three-pointers and Cyprus couldn't keep up. Nicholas Paulos
had 14 points and Will Watkins 10.

Cyprus' best moment: Weston Warr tied his season high with 16
points as Cyprus stayed within 10 points at halftime. The Pirates
also hit from the outside, as Roman Sanchez had three of the
team's six three-pointers.

Statistical notes: The 84 points given up was the second-most
this season for Cyprus. Oly won its sixth straight game. Taylor
Jones had 11 points for the Pirates.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus finished tied with
Granger at the bottom of the Region 6 standings.

Next: Cyprus is finished for the season. Olympus advanced to the
4A state tourney and will play Orem on March 3.

Feb. 20 - Murray 63, Cyprus 60

Story of the game: Markus Duran scored 20 points as Murray
held off Cyprus and clinched at least a fourth-place position in the
Region 6 standings.

Cyprus' best moment: This was the Pirates' best offensive effort
of the season. They scored 26 points in the final period to make it
a game. Weston Warr was the top scorer with 14 points, while
Taylor Jones had 13.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans had a 26-23 lead at
halftime, and extended it to eight points going into the final period.
They withstood the Cyprus comeback by hitting enough free
throws. Ken Masic added 10 points.

Statistical notes: Cyprus is now 0-5 in games decided by three
points or less. The Pirates had four three-pointers, led by Roman
Sanchez with two. Duran and John Hunt had a pair of treys each
for Murray.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus played another tough
game, but just couldn't pull out the victory. That's been the story of
their season this year.

Next: Cyprus travels to Olympus on Feb. 24. Murray plays at
Cottonwood the same night.

Feb. 17 - East 55, Cyprus 52

Story of the game: Christian Brown scored 13 points, while Scott
Paulsen and Jeff Vargas had 10 each as East rallied to beat
Cyprus and keep its playoff hopes alive in a Region 6 game.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates had their best offensive output
in two months and took a 19-9 lead in the first quarter. Isaac
Johnson led Cyprus with 15 points, while Weston Warr had 14
and Marquis Newman 13.

East's best moment: The Leopards fell behind early, but rallied
with a 20-11 third-quarter spurt to pull ahead. The score went
back-and-forth and East hung on, despite shooting poorly from
the free-throw line.

Statistical notes: East was 18-33 from the free-throw line;
Cyprus was 15-21. Warr had three treys for Cyprus. East trailed
by as many as 13 points in the first quarter.

What we learned from this game: The Pirates had their best
offensive showing since Dec. 29 against Juan Diego. Cyprus is
playing without pressure now, and this might be a sign of things
to come.

Next: Cyprus travels to Murray on Feb. 20. East goes to Olympus
the same night.

Feb. 13 - West 67, Cyprus 38

Story of the game: Chris Barnes and Ricardo Saldana outscored
Cyprus by themselves, with 22 and 20 points, as West routed the
Pirates in a Region 6 game.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates stayed close in the first
quarter, but didn't have the offense to keep up with West. Weston
Warr and Marquis Newman had nine points apiece for Cyprus.

West's best moment: The Panthers led 34-22 at halftime, and
then blew the game open in the third period, outscoring Cyprus
18-4. Daniel Wray added 13 points as West avoided an upset
prior to its big matchup against Olympus.

Statistical notes: West won the season series and beat Cyprus
by about 30 points each time. West's Tyrell Corbin scored just
two points, which was his season low.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus lost its second straight
game, and every time it has scored in the 30s, it has been routed
by its opponent.

Next: Cyprus travels to East on Feb. 17. Olympus goes to West
the same night.

Feb. 10 - Cottonwood 61, Cyprus 47

Story of the game: Jake Nelson had a season-high 18 points,
including four three-pointers, as Cottonwood rallied in the second
half to down Cyprus in a Region 6 game.

Cyprus' best moment: Roman Sanchez had 15 points for the
Pirates, who played a good first half and stayed even. The
defense was porous after that. Nobody else reached double
figures.

Cottonwood's best moment: The game was tied 21-21 at
halftime before Cottonwood got its offense going. Nelson was the
key outscoring threat as the Colts scored 23 points in the third
quarter alone and end a two-game losing streak.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 13-16 from the free-throw line,
compared to 10-18 for Cyprus. Raymond Chavez had 14 points
and Tyson Reynolds 11 for the Colts.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus played tough, but
couldn't keep going for four quarters.

Next: Cyprus takes on West at home Feb. 13. Cottonwood plays
at
Olympus the same night.

Feb. 6 - Cyprus 47, Granger 38

Story of the game: Weston Warr led a balanced scoring attack
with 14 points as Cyprus held off Granger to earn its first Region
6 win of the season.

Cyprus' best moment: Warr, Marquis Newman and Taylor Jones
got the Pirates off to a good start, and they held on to the lead
throughout. Granger rallied, but the Pirates put it away in the
fourth quarter. Newman had 12 points and Jones 10.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers seem to have lost guard
T.J. Tapusoa as he missed the second consecutive game.
Granger made a nice comeback until it gave up 20 points in the
final period. Woul Koyom had 13 points and Tre Musgrow 10.

Statistical notes: Only five players scored for Granger; six for
Cyprus. Both teams shot free throws well. Cyprus held Granger to
just two first-quarter points. Cyprus' defensive effort (giving up 38
points) was a season best.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus and Granger are now
tied for the bottom spot in the standings, and will likely stay there.
However, this win could be a momentum-boost for the Pirates.

Next: Cyprus plays at Cottonwood Feb. 10. Granger has Olympus
at home the same night.

Jan. 30 - Highland 56, Cyprus 30

Story of the game: Spenser Bowen scored 14 points and Walker
Jensen added 10 off the bench, but it was Highland's defense
that made the difference in its Region 6 win over Cyprus.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates have been held to the 30s on
offense the last three games. The defense played well in the first
half and kept them in the game. Weston Warr had nine points,
including two three-pointers.

Highland's best moment: The Rams trailed 7-5 after the first
quarter, but outscored Cyprus 15-3 in the second period and
never trailed again. Highland found its offense in the second half.

Statistical notes: Highland had six three-point baskets, including
three by Bowen. Cyprus made just seven baskets all night.
Highland was 14-21 from the free-throw line; Cyprus was 14-23.

What we learned from this game: The question has to be asked:
Are the Pirates "mailing" it in? Cyprus hasn't even been
competitive lately. The next game will determine it.

Next: Cyprus has Granger at home on Feb. 6. Highland goes to
Olympus the same night.

Jan. 27 - Olympus 74, Cyprus 38

Story of the game: Corbin Green led the way with 15 points as
Olympus took a big lead early and then emptied its bench en
route to an easy Region 6 win over Cyprus.

Cyprus' best moment: This was never a winnable game. The
Pirates trailed the entire game. They needed either a great
offensive effort or a brilliant defense. Isaac Johnson had six
points for Cyprus.

Oly's best moment: The Titans' starters got this rout going early
and Oly took a 27-7 lead after one quarter. It was 44-18 at
halftime, and then the reserves took over. Eleven players scored
for Oly, and their hot outside shooting continued with eight
three-pointers.

Statistical notes: The 36-point difference was the biggest of any
Region 6 game this year. Connor Brady and Spencer Hille had 11
points each for Oly. The Titans were only 4-8 from the free-throw
line as they spent most of their time on the perimeter.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus is on an eight-game
losing streak and it wouldn't be surprising if the Pirates didn't win
another game. Why? The last two games, the team hasn't even
been competitive. Cyprus needs to find some inspiration.

Next: Cyprus travels to Highland on Jan. 30. Olympus is at Murray
the same night.

Jan. 23 - Murray 64, Cyprus 36

Story of the game: Markus Duran scored 17 points and John
Hunt had 13 as Murray roared past Cyprus with a big third quarter
and took its third straight Region 6 win.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates had trouble scoring. They had
just three points in the first quarter. Isaac Johnson led Cyprus
with nine points, and Weston Warr had seven.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 23-16 at halftime, but
then outscored Cyprus 25-5 in the third quarter to turn this contest
into a rout. Duran and Hunt had three treys each.

Statistical notes: Cyprus 36 points was its lowest since its
season opener. It was also a best for Murray's defense. Murray
was 9-11 from the free-throw line; Cyprus was 14-22.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus dropped to 0-6 and is
in last place in the region standings. It seems somewhat likely
the Pirates have that spot reserved unless something changes
soon.

Next: Cyprus goes to Olympus on Jan. 23. Murray plays host to
Cottonwood the same night.

Jan. 20 - East 55, Cyprus 49

Story of the game: Christian Brown led a balanced scoring attack
with 14 points as East held off Cyprus and won its second
Region 6 game of the season.

Cyprus' best moment: Weston Warr and Marquis Newman each
had a season-high 16 points for the Pirates, who rallied from a
29-21 halftime deficit and made a game of it.

East's best moment: The Leopards led most of the way, and
withstood a Cyprus comeback on the Pirates' home floor. Scott
Paulsen and Jeff Vargas added 12 and 11 points.

Statistical notes: Deng Deng had a pair of three-pointers (and
nine points) for East. The Leopards were 16-23 from the
free-throw line; Cyprus was 15-25. Taylor Jones had 10 points for
Cyprus.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus fell to 0-5 in region
and is in sole possession of last place. The Pirates played East
tough, but couldn't win another close game.

Next: Cyprus plays host to Murray on Jan. 23. East takes on
Olympus at home the same night.

Jan. 16 - West 76, Cyprus 45

Story of the game: Chris Barnes scored 24 points and led
West's fine-tuned offense to a convincing win over Cyprus in a
Region 6 game.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates were never in the game, but
played West pretty evenly in the second half. Marquis Newman
had 12 points for Cyprus.

West's best moment: The Panthers led 15-8 after the first
quarter and then 36-13 at halftime. Ricardo Saldana had 17
points, and Jordan Tanner and Tyrell Corbin 12 each.

Statistical notes: Despite being so far behind, Cyprus made just
one three-point basket. West was 7-10 from the free-throw line.
Cyprus 8-16. Barnes solidified his position as the region's
leading scorer.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus has lost five straight
games, but this was the first region game where it was not
competitive.

Next: Cyprus takes on East at home on Jan. 20. West travels to
play
Olympus the same night.

Jan. 13 - Cottonwood 48, Cyprus 45

Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds and Alo Moli scored 15
points apiece as Cottonwood won its second straight game and
moved near the top of the standings in Region 6.

Cyprus' best moment: The fourth-quarter rally was almost
enough, helped by the Colts' poor free-throw shooting. Weston
Warr had 13 points and Isaac Johnson got back into the offense
with 11, including three treys.

Cottonwood's best moment: Moli is getting more involved in the
offense, and it is helping the Colts' inside-outside game.
Cottonwood led 37-29 after three quarters and held off the
Pirates' comeback.

Statistical notes: The Pirates' fourth-straight loss. They have also
lost all three of their close games (three points or less).
Cottonwood was 9-19 from the free-throw line. It was Moli's
second straight "good" offensive showing.

What we learned from this game: The Pirates dropped to 0-3 in
region, and are now 0-3 at home - having the same success at
home the football team did. Region play will be full of close
games, and Cyprus needs to learn how to win those.

Next: Cyprus travels to play unbeaten West on Friday (Jan. 16).
Cottonwood returns home to take on Olympus the same night.

Jan. 9 - Granger 55, Cyprus 40

Story of the game: Granger's guard duo of Tre Musgrow and T.J.
Tapusoa combined for 31 points as the Lancers put together one
of their best games of the season and beat Cyprus in a Region 6
game.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates managed a fourth-quarter
rally, but it didn't amount to much. Cyprus didn't bring its "A" game
and it showed. Marcus Bryce led the way with 10 points.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers dominated from the start,
jumping to a 17-7 first-quarter lead and extending it to 44-35
entering the final period.

Statistical notes: Tapusoa had 16 points, while Musgrow had 15.
Woul Koyom added eight. Where was Cyprus' Isaac Johnson?
He didn't score. Did he play?

What we learned from this game: This was a disappointing loss
because it was a winnable game. In this region, there might be
only four or five of those for the Pirates.

Next: Cyprus has a home game against Cottonwood on Jan. 13.
Granger travels to Olympus the same night.

Jan. 6 - Highland 43, Cyprus 41 (OT)

Story of the game: Spenser Bowen scored 15 points and Jordan
Crayton had 12 as Highland hung on to beat Cyprus in overtime
after the Pirates engineered a huge rally in the fourth quarter.

Cyprus' best moment: Roman Sanchez and Marquis Newman
led the Pirates' rally. Cyprus outscored Highland 17-6 in the final
quarter to send the game to OT. Sanchez led Cyprus with 13
points, while Newman had 10.

Highland's best moment: The Rams led most of the game, even
pulling ahead 28-17 after the end of the third quarter. After Cyprus
rallied, Highland did a nice job and didn't give in.

Statistical notes: Highland's defense controlled the game until
the fourth quarter. The Rams led just 13-10 at halftime. Highland
hit just 4-9 free throws, which helped the Cyprus rally.

What we learned from this game: This was a tough loss for
Cyprus. The Pirates have to learn to win the close games, like
they did in the Logan tournament.

Next: Cyprus travels to Granger on Jan. 9. Highland returns home
to play
Olympus.

Jan. 2 - Woods Cross 85, Cyprus 48

Story of the game: Tyler Stahle and Jake West scored 18 points
apiece as Woods Cross put together a balanced offensive attack
and whipped Cyprus in a non-region game.

Cyprus' best moment: This game was never in doubt. Woods
Cross led 20-7 after one quarter and 44-20 at halftime. Isaac
Johnson had 14 points and Marquis Newman added 10.

Woods Cross' best moment: The Wildcats are usually led by
Stahle, but he had help from West, David Bitner (13 points), Peter
Howey (12) and Tyler Hall (11). Woods Cross was able to empty
the bench in the second half.

Statistical notes: This was the Wildcats' best offensive output
this season. Woods Cross is 2-2 against Region 6 foes. Cyprus
was 18-30 from the free throw line; Woods Cross was 10-18.
This game was moved from an earlier date due to weather
problems.

What we learned from this game: This was a tough loss. Cyprus
was on a two-game win streak from the Logan tournament, and
this game puts a damper on that going into region.

Next: Cyprus starts region play at home against Highland Jan. 6.
Woods Cross goes to Bountiful Jan. 14.

Dec. 30 - Cyprus 54, Juan Diego 48

Story of the game: Marquis Newman scored 12 points and
Weston Warr added 11 as Cyprus earned a big first-half lead and
then hung on to beat Juan Diego for third place in the LHS/CVE
Holiday Classic in Logan.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates led 17-7 after the first quarter
and stretched it to 33-17 at halftime. Isaac Johnson had 10 points
for Cyprus, including a pair of three-pointers.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle had a nice
third-quarter rally that made the game interesting. Mark Krueger
scored 17 points and Tyler Bauman 10.

Statistical notes: Cyprus made 15 of 18 free throws, which
helped stop Juan Diego's rally. The 54 points was a season high
for the Pirates. Other scores were: Jordan 63, Springville 61;
Pleasant Grove 71, Logan 56, and Timpanogos 50, Tooele 44.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus won two games at this
tournament, which had to be a huge event since it hadn't won a
game coming in. The Pirates now have some momentum going
into the Region 6 season.

Next: Cyprus plays at Woods Cross on Jan. 2. Juan Diego goes
to
Judge Memorial on Jan. 3.

Dec. 29 - Cyprus 49, Timpanogos 44

Story of the game: Taylor Jones scored 12 points and Cyprus
rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Timpanogos for
their first win at the LHS/CVE Holiday Classic in Logan.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates outscored Timpanogos 36-20
in the second half. Marquis Newman added 11 points, and
Weston Warr had 10.

Timpanogos' best moment: The Thunderbirds played well in the
first half, holding Cyprus to just 13 points. Andrew Eide led
Timpanogos with a game-high 15 points.

Statistical notes: Timpanogos made just 7 of 19 free throws.
Cyprus was 7-15. The Pirates made four three-point baskets.
Other scores were: Springville 75, Logan 56; Jordan 58, Pleasant
Grove 55, and Juan Diego 43, Tooele 40.

What we learned from this game: It took over a month since the
start of the season, but Cyprus has its first win. We'll see if this
momentum can propel the Pirates in the next game.

Next: Cyprus advances to the fifth-place game against Juan
Diego. Timpanogos will play Tooele for seventh.

Dec. 27 - Logan 63, Cyprus 51

Story of the game: Jeff Manning scored 14 points and Jordan
Roblyer had 13 as Logan put together a huge third quarter and
defeated Cyprus on the first day of the LHS/CVE Holiday Classic
in Logan.

Cyprus' best moment: Taylor Jones led all scorers with 22
points, including five three-pointers. The Pirates had nine treys
overall. Cyprus led 22-17 at halftime.

Logan's best moment: The Grizzlies outscored Cyprus 27-12 in
the third quarter. Reserve Sage Nyman scored six points in the
quarter, and also had three steals.

Statistical notes: Zach Skabelund had 12 points and Omar
McDade 10 for Logan. Jones was 5-8 from three-point range. The
Pirates' biggest lead was 25-18 early in the third quarter.

What we learned from this game: It has been three weeks since
Cyprus played last, and the Pirates fell to 0-4 with the loss. Other
games from this tourney were: Springville 55, Timpanogos 47;
Jordan 67, Tooele 45, and Pleasant Grove 78, Juan Diego 49.

Next: Cyprus will play Timpanogos on Monday (Dec. 29). Logan
will take on Springville.

Dec. 5 - Taylorsville 65, Cyprus 41

Story of the game: Daren Oakeson scored 14 points as
Taylorsville spread the scoring around. The Warriors jumped to a
big lead and dispatched Cyprus in a non-region game.

Cyprus' best moment: Taylor Jones led the Pirates with 11
points. After trailing 20-8 to start the second quarter, Cyprus
rallied to stay in the game at halftime. Jones, Trevor Stratton and
Weston Warr hit three-pointers for the Pirates.

Taylorsville's best moment: Jordan Edgington was the big
scorer in the Warriors' first two games, but he got a lot of help this
time. Stevie McCloyn added 13 points and Mike Staker had 11.

Statistical notes: It was 30-21 Taylorsville at halftime, but the
Warriors outscored Cyprus 14-4 in the third to put it away. Cyprus
was 5-13 from the free-throw line, while Tville was a pathetic 6-20
- on its home floor.

What we learned from this game: These teams are headed in
different directions. Cyprus still needs dramatic improvement in
order to contend in Region 6.

Next: Cyprus is off for two weeks before going to Woods Cross
on Dec. 19.
Taylorsville plays host to Kearns Dec. 9.

Dec. 3 - Judge Memorial 50, Cyprus 47

Story of the game: Dee Crandall scored 14 points, and Oliver
Hughes and Stallon Saldivar added 12 each as Judge held
off Cyprus and gave Jim Yerkovich his 600th career coaching
victory.

Cyprus' best moment: Isaac Johnson had 13 points for the
Pirates. Marquis Newman and Weston Warr had 10 each. This
was a much better game for Cyprus. While they fell behind early,
they rallied with a big third quarter that tied the game.

Judge's best moment: This one almost got away, but the
Bulldogs hit 11-13 free throws, including a couple down the
stretch, to hold on to the win. Judge led the entire game.

Statistical notes: Cyprus was just 1-2 from the free throw line,
which was a lot different from Judge. The Pirates were 6-12
against West Jordan, so their FT percentage is still at 50 percent.

What we learned from this game: Yerkovich has been coaching
for 43 years, and has turned down some college coaching
opportunities. Check out Saldivar's quote: "
We tried to keep our
minds off of it, but it was also motivation for us. But it was also
kind of a jinx tonight. We just want to win. It didn't matter where we
got it
."

Next: Cyprus travels to Taylorsville Friday night to play the
unbeaten Warriors.
Judge returns home to take on Jordan.

Nov. 25 - West Jordan 79, Cyprus 27

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 20 points and led three
players in double figures as West Jordan blew out Cyprus in an
embarrassing manner in the opening game for both teams.

Cyprus' best moment: This was a stinker. Marcus Bryce led
Cyprus with seven points, and Weston Warr had six. But Cyprus
couldn't score. The Pirates were down 27-2 after one quarter, and
45-8 at halftime. Not a good way to start the season.

West Jordan's best moment: Because the Jaguars had such a
big lead, they were able to empty their bench. Ten players scored
for West Jordan. This was a good confidence-builder.

Statistical leaders: Reyes Gallegos had 12 points for West
Jordan and Mason Sawyer added 10. The 27 points are a low for
any Utah boys team - so far - this season.

What we learned from this game: Let's go back and practice as
soon as possible. Fortunately, there's more than a month until
Region 6 season.

Next: Cyprus has plenty of time to eat some turkey and practice
before its Dec. 5 game at
Taylorsville. West Jordan has a home
game Dec. 3 against
Hillcrest.
