Oct. 31 - Mountain Crest 49, Cyprus 7
Story of the game - QB Jake Kuresa passed for 193 yards and
three touchdowns, and Alex Knowles added 129 yards rushing as
the Mustangs scored on all six possessions they had in the first half
and whipped Cyprus in a 4-A playoff game.
Cyprus' best moment - Trailing 49-0, the Pirates scored on a
56-yard touchdown pass from QB Chris Peel to Tyrel Hardman. The
Pirates could never establish a running game, and were held to
minus-2 yards on the ground.
Mountain Crest's best moment - The Mustangs went deep into the
4-A playoffs last year, and used that experience to jump to a big lead
early. They scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters, and the
"mercy rule" went into effect after halftime to allow the clock to run
faster.
What was learned from the game - Cyprus knew this was going to
be a tough game, playing Region 5's top team on its home field.
Region 5 won two of its three playoff games Friday.
Next - Cyprus is done for the season. Mountain Crest advances and
will play host to Dixie.

Oct. 23 - Cyprus 34, Granger 21
Story of the game - A big win for Cyprus. Trent Dea and Jordan
Pulou rushed for two touchdowns each as Cyprus rallied the fourth
quarter to beat Granger and advance to the 4-A playoffs.
Cyprus' best moment - This was the Pirates' finest moment, and it
quelled the problems they have had on their home field. Their
offense scored a season-high 34 points. The game was tied 21-21
entering the fourth quarter, and Cyprus put it away.
Granger's best moment - The Lancers scored a big plays, like an
80-yard pass from QB Brentt Phillips to Tali Houma and Manu
Samani's 40-yard run. Granger ran out of gas in the fourth quarter.
What was learned from the game - Cyprus did what it needed to do
to win the game, and make the 4-A playoffs. Coach Sonny Sudbury
hopes this will provide a big momentum boost because
post-season won't be easy.
Next - Cyprus advances to play at Mountain Crest in a 4-A playoff
game. Granger's season is over.

Oct. 15 - East 20, Cyprus 6
Story of the game - East's Ryan Shipp had 111 yards and two
touchdowns, and teammate Sunia Tautiola rambled 79 yards for
another score as the Leopards took charge in the second half to
claim a Region 6 home win over Cyprus.
Cyprus' best moment - Albert Wolfgramm scored the Pirates' only
touchdown on a 10-yard run in the second quarter. The extra point
was missed, but the Pirates were within 7-6 at halftime.
East's best moment - Tautioli had his long run in the third quarter,
and Shipp had a 56-yard scamper a few minutes later. The defense
played well all day, limiting Cyprus to just that one score.

Mountain Crest's Alex Knowles runs for a big gain while George Thomas
of Cyprus tries to catch up.
What was learned from the game - A win would have assured Cyprus of a 4-A playoff berth. Now, the Pirates will have to earn it by
beating Granger.
Next - Cyprus returns home to play west-side rival Granger. East travels to play West.

Oct. 10 - Highland 35, Cyprus 0
Story of the game - Muli Kinikini returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Highland played great defense and blocked a field goal
en route to a shutout Region 6 victory over Cyprus.
Cyprus' best moment - Not much to tell. There's something about the Pirates' home field as they are 1-3 there, with three shutout
losses. Cyprus is in a battle for the last playoff berth offered in the region.
Highland's best moment - QB Nick Orchard rushed 10 times for 70 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown run. The Rams led 21-0 at
halftime, and Kinikini's kickoff return led off the third quarter. Bridger Walzer had 90 yards on just four carries.
What was learned from the game - Maybe we can blame the schedule, but there's something odd about being blanked three out of four
games at home. The Pirates need at least one win in their last two games.
Next - Cyprus travels to East. Highland returns home to take on West.

Oct. 3 - West 35, Cyprus 21
Story of the game - Tana Afeaki rushed for 227 yards and QB Daniel Wray completed 10 of 15 passes for 125 yards as the Panthers
shook off last week's loss to Cottonwood with an impressive win over Cyprus in a Region 6 game.
Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates offense was on fire in the second quarter, as they matched West by putting 21 points on the
scoreboard to go into halftime tied. Cyprus didn't score in the second half.
West's best moment - This was Afeaki's best game of the season, and it was helped by Wray's ability to throw the football. The defense
also came alive as Foueti Afeaki returned an interception for a touchdown.
What was learned from the game - This was a tough loss. We knew this would likely be a good game. The Pirates face tough
opponents in the next two weeks.
Next - Cyprus has a home game against Highland. West plays host to Murray.

Sept. 26 - Cyprus 16, Murray 14
Story of the game - George Thomas rushed for 125 yards and scored two touchdowns, and Andy Rodriguez kicked an 18-yard field goal
with :09 remaining to lift Cyprus to an exciting homecoming win over Murray in a Region 6 game.
Cyprus' best moment - Trailing 14-13 with the hometown crowd on its feet, the Pirates drove down to the 1-yard line before Rodriguez
split the uprights. It was a perfect way to end the evening. It also gave Rodriguez a chance to make up for a missed extra point earlier.
Murray's best moment - This might have been the Spartans' best game this season. Dee Hamala and Tyler Prestwich scored
touchdowns for Murray, which equaled its best point total this season. Losing is never easy, but the Spartans have hope.
What was learned from the game - Like last year, it was another close win for Cyprus. Even better, the Pirates scored for the first time
on their home field. The schedule gets tougher, but Cyprus is in good position.
Next - Cyprus travels to play West. Murray returns home for a game against Granger.
Links - There was no local media coverage of the game. To read the Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune's

Sept. 19 - Cottonwood 37, Cyprus 0
Story of the game - QB Steve Romero passed for 165 yards and four TDs, and RB Isi Sofele had 130 yards rushing, but it was the Colts'
defense that turned this game into a rout.
Cyprus' best moment - Not much to report. The Pirates were held to 12 total yards, and were shut out for the third time in four weeks. In
fact, they've not scored on their home field this season. Still, maybe East and Highland are the only region opponents that will be able to
give Cottonwood a game this season.
Cottonwood's best moment - For the second straight week, a Region 6 opponent was no match for the Colts. Cottonwood led 28-0 at
halftime. The defense also got into the act, recording a fourth-quarter safety.
What was learned from the game - Cyprus scored 31 points last week, but Cottonwood is on a mission to win the 4-A state title. The
Colts did it with defense. These types of wins give coach Cecil Thomas a chance to let everyone play.
Next - Cyprus has another home game, taking on Murray at homecoming. Cottonwood returns home to play West.

Cyprus 31, Olympus 15
Story of the game - The Pirates found their offense - right away. George Thomas and Trent Dea scored two touchdowns apiece as
Cyprus roared past Cyprus in their Region 6 opener at Olympus.
Cyprus' best moment - After being shut out two straight games, the Pirates jumped on Oly immediately. Helped by two long runs by
Thomas, Cyprus went 82 yards to go ahead 7-0. After an interception, Dea stretched across the end zone to make it 14-0.
Olympus' best moment - The Titans can score quickly, making it 14-7 when QB Spencer Harris hit Spencer Hille on a 71-yard TD pass.
Harris was later hurt, and was replaced by Lance McGavin. When you lose your starting QB, it's never a good thing.
What we learned from this game - It's ironic that Cyprus has won its two road games, and lost both games at home. Coach Sonny
Sudbury said "the kids came to play." Next week, they'll need that same attitude against Cottonwood.
Next - The Pirates return home to play 4-A power Cottonwood. Olympus travels to play West. Both are Region 6 games.

Juan Diego 33, Cyprus 0
Story of the game - Zach Kinniger rushed for 105 yards and two TDs and Tyler Morales had 98 yards and a pair of scores as Juan
Diego handed Cyprus its second straight shutout loss.
Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates are obviously having trouble with their offense. They trailed 26-0 at halftime, and held Juan Diego to
just one second-half TD.
Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle dominated, and that was especially evident in the first half. Juan Diego was able to
score quickly a couple of times as QB Brian May hooked up with Jacob Doughty on a 62-yard score and Morales had a 56-yard run.
What was learned from the game? Defense may win championships, but not if the offense isn't scoring. The Pirates are finished with
non-region play and will need to score if it has any chance to play win against their next two opponents.
Next - Cyprus starts Region 6 action with a game at Olympus. Juan Diego travels to Wasatch in a non-region contest.

Aug. 29 - Kearns 20, Cyprus 0
Story of the game - Kearns reserve RB Toa Afatasi ran for 88 yards on 18 carries as the Cougars' defense shut down Cyprus in a game
married by a brawl the resulted in three players being tossed from the game.
Cyprus' best moment - This probably won't go down as one of the Pirates' best moments. It was their home opener, and the offense
couldn't score. In addition, games that have brawls aren't respected. It will be an interesting week of practice for coach Sonny Sudbury's
team.
Kearns' best moment - The Cougars say they aren't very deep, but Afatasi came off the bench and was the team's rushing hero. In
addition, Kearns seemed to wear down the Pirates and it showed. Lastly, the Cougars' staff was able to make the right calls as coach
Bill Cosper had to leave the field after complaining of headaches.
What was learned from the game? Cyprus has a 1-1 record, and certainly the team's motivation has been reduced following this game.
But Sudbury has been there before, and this team will likely rally for next week's game.
Next - Cyprus plays at home again - this time against 3-A power Juan Diego. Kearns has a home game against Alta.

Aug. 22 - Cyprus 17, Tooele 14
Story of the game - When two old-school coaches get together you have to expect an old school game between linemen. But Cyprus QB
Chris Peel threw the football more than expected. In the end, it was a 26-yard field goal that decided the game, a close win for Cyprus for
the second straight year.
Cyprus' best moment - Trailing 14-10, Peel hit Vinny Maribelle on a short touchdown pass to erase the deficit and give the Pirates the
comeback victory.
Tooele's best moment - Jordan Biorge had a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give the hometown crowd a boost. It was the
first time Tooele had the lead. Fans were on the edge of their seats the rest of the game.
What was learned from the game? This game was two teams trying to get to know themselves and it ended up being a hard-fought win
for Cyprus, and a tough loss for Tooele, just like last year. Good teams win close games. Cyprus learned that last year, and it ended up
giving them a playoff berth.
Next - Cyprus has its season opener against Kearns. Tooele has another home game against West.
