Feb. 24 - Highland 58, East 34
Story of the game: Highland's outside shooting trio of Spenser
Bowen, Taylor Brightwell and Walker Jensen combined for 37 points
as the Rams whipped East for its fifth straight win.
East's best moment: The Leopards were never able to get their
offense going. They made just nine field goals the entire game and
were left out of the postseason. Senior Taylor Swenson led with nine
points.
Highland's best moment: The Rams led from the beginning, and
pushed the margin to 10 points by halftime. Highland blew out East
in the final quarter for the big margin. Bowen finished with 16 points
and Brightwell had 12.
Statistical notes: Jensen had nine points for Highland. The Rams
finished 8-1 at home, 1-2 on neutral sites and 6-3 on the road.
Highland was 18-27 from the free-throw line; East was 14-17.
What we learned from this game: If East would have won this game,
the Leopards would have earned a state berth. When it was apparent
that wasn't going to happen, Highland was able to pile it on.
Next: East is finished for the season. Highland will play Woods
Cross in the opening round of the 4A state tourney March 3.

Feb. 20 - Olympus 64, East 36
Story of the game: Connor Brady and Will Watkins led a balanced
scoring effort with 12 points apiece as the Olympus defense throttled
East and the Titans earned their fifth straight win.
East's best moment: The Leopards were never in the game, and
their post-season chances were hurt, too. Andrew Williams was
East's top scorer with eight points.
Olympus' best moment: The Titans led 27-16 at halftime, but
outscored East 22-4 in the third quarter to put the game away. Oly
cleared its bench and 10 players scored in the final home game of
the season.
Statistical notes: East's worst offensive outputs in region play both
came against Olympus. Oly had five three-pointers, led by Nicholas
Paulos with two. Corbin Green had 11 points and Paulos 10 for Oly.
What we learned from this game: East is one game behind
Cottonwood the final state tournament berth. The Colts play Murray,
while East takes on Highland. The Leopards must win that game
and hope Cottonwood loses. East has the tiebreaker against
Cottonwood.
Next: East plays host to Highland on Feb. 24. Olympus travels to
Cyprus the same night.

Feb. 17 - East 55, Cyprus 52
Story of the game: Christian Brown scored 13 points, while Scott
Paulsen and Jeff Vargas had 10 each as East rallied to beat Cyprus
and keep its playoff hopes alive in a Region 6 game.
East's best moment: The Leopards fell behind early, but rallied with
a 20-11 third-quarter spurt to pull ahead. The score went
back-and-forth and East hung on, despite shooting poorly from the
free-throw line.
Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates had their best offensive output in
two months and took a 19-9 lead in the first quarter. Isaac Johnson
led Cyprus with 15 points, while Weston Warr had 14 and Marquis
Newman 13.
Statistical notes: East was 18-33 from the free-throw line; Cyprus
was 15-21. Warr had three treys for Cyprus. East trailed by as many
as 13 points in the first quarter.
What we learned from this game: East and Cottonwood are tied for
the final playoff berth in Region 6, and East owns the tiebreaker. The
Leopards, however, have a more difficult schedule.
Next: East plays at Olympus on Feb. 20. Cyprus travels to Murray at
the same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Feb. 13 - Murray 67, East 64
Story of the game: Ken Masic had the hot hand this time, scoring a
season-high 24 points, as Murray rallied to beat East and move into
sole possession of fourth place in Region 6.
East's best moment: The Leopards scored 26 points in the second
quarter, and grabbed the momentum. Christian Brown scored 19
points and Jeff Vargas 18 for East.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 17-9 after the first quarter,
but let the game get away in the second period. They rallied and
finally took the lead in the fourth quarter. Markus Duran added 15
points.
Statistical notes: Murray was 19-31 from the free-throw line; East
was 11-18. Murray has a chance to finish the regular season above
.500.
What we learned from this game: East had a chance to pull off this
win, which would have done wonders for its post-season chances.
East probably needs two more wins to reach the state tourney.
Next: East takes on Cyprus at home Feb. 17. Murray goes to Granger
the same night.

Feb. 10 - West 76, East 55
Story of the game: Ricardo Saldana, Tyrell Corbin, Chris Barnes and
Jordan Tanner all scored in double figures as West celebrated its
95th year of the West-East rivalry with a convincing Region 6 win.
East's best moment: The Leopards played tough in the first quarter,
but couldn't keep up after that. Scott Paulsen had 14 points, and
Christian Brown and Jeff Vargas had 11.
West's best moment: The game was 16-16 after one quarter, but
West blew it open after that, taking a 38-25 halftime lead. The game
was played at West's preferred faster pace. Saldana was the top
scorer with 16 points.
Statistical notes: East shot barely 50 percent from the free-throw
line. West swept the season series. The loss ended East's
two-game win streak. Both teams had five three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: East's hope for an upset didn't
last very long on this night. Each team received awards from West's
booster club regarding the long rivalry. The teams will play in different
regions next year.
Next: East travels to Murray on Feb. 13. West plays at Cyprus the
same night.

Feb. 6 - East 68, Cottonwood 57
Story of the game: Christian Brown scored 22 points and three
teammates also scored in double figures as East pulled away from
Cottonwood early and moved into a tie for the fifth - and last - playoff
spot in Region 6.
East's best moment: East led from the start, jumping to a 16-5
advantage by the end of the first period. Brown led the Leopards'
offense with five three-pointers. Jeff Vargas, Deng Deng and Andrew
Williams had 10 points apiece.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts were down by 15 points
entering the final period, but Tyson Reynolds led a comeback that
had the home crowd sweating. Reynolds finished with 20 points,
including three treys. Jake Nelson added 15.
Statistical notes: East had a huge advantage at the free-throw line,
hitting 25-40 of shots, compared to 11-22 for Cottonwood. East's top
two scoring games of the season have been against the Colts.
What we learned from this game: This was a big win because now
East has a chance to reach the post-season. That has to be a huge
momentum boost for a team that won just two games all of last year.
Cottonwood, however, has a schedule advantage.
Next: East travels to rival West on Feb. 10. Cottonwood takes on
Cyprus at home the same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Jan. 30 - East 63, Granger 52
Story of the game: Sophomore Jack Larson scored a season-high
18 points to help East pull away from Granger in the second quarter
and earn the Region 6 victory.
East's best moment: East trailed 9-7 at the end of the first quarter,
but outscored Granger 18-7 to take a nine-point halftime lead, which
it never relinquished. Jeff Vargas added 13 points and Scott Paulsen
had 10.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers made a nice rally in the fourth
quarter. Granger played without guard T.J. Tapusoa. Tre Musgrow led
Granger with 19 points and Woul Koyom added 17, including three
treys.
Statistical notes: East had a big advantage at the foul time. The
Leopards were 22-34 from the line; Granger was just 7-13. Granger
had five three-point baskets; East had just one. The Leopards
leading scorer, Christian Brown, had just five points.
What we learned from this game: This was a good win for East, and
now the Leopards are just one game out of fifth place, which is
where it needs to be to earn a 4A post-season berth.
Next: East has Cottonwood at home on Feb. 6. Granger plays at
Cyprus the same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Jan. 27 - Highland 53, East 46
Story of the game: Walker Jensen led a balanced scoring attack with
10 points as Highland pulled away from East in the third quarter and
beat its Salt Lake rival in a Region 6 game.
East's best moment: The Leopards trailed the entire game and
Christian Brown and Jeff Vargas were the team's only real scoring
threats. Brown had 16 points and Vargas 11.
Highland's best moment: The Rams led 27-19 at halftime, but
outscored East 15-8 in the third quarter to take a commanding lead.
Jensen provided a nice effort off the bench, and gave Highland
another outside scoring threat.
Statistical notes: Jordan Crayton had nine points for Highland, while
Spenser Bowen and Latu Heimuli added eight. Four different Ram
players hit three-pointers and 10 players scored.
What we learned from this game: The Leopars are losing to the
teams ahead of them, and beating the lower-tiered ones. That won't
work if they want to reach the post-season. East needs at least one
other scorer and must win its next two games to have a chance.
Next: East travels to Granger on Jan. 30. Highland plays Cyprus at
home the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Jan. 23 - Olympus 36, East 35
Story of the game: Nick Paulos scored 10 points and Spencer Hille
had nine as Olympus somehow avoided East's upset bid with a
narrow Region 6 victory.
East's best moment: The Leopards had a marvelous game plan and
it worked. Christian Brown led East with 13 points. If they had
managed any sort of offense in the fourth quarter, they would have
won.
Oly's best moment: The Titans had to develop a new game plan,
and they did it with defense, and managed to win. Oly trailed 33-27
entering the fourth quarter, but outscored East 9-2 to win it.
Statistical notes: Paulos and Brown each had three treys to lead
their team. Oly was 8-14 from the free-throw line; East was 3-7. The
36 points was a season low for Oly.
What we learned from this game: How did Oly win this game? This
had upset written all over it, but Paulos, Hille and a little bit of luck did
it. Maybe this will inspire East.
Next: East goes to Highland on Jan. 27. Oly returns home to play
Cyprus the same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Jan. 20 - East 55, Cyprus 49
Story of the game: Christian Brown led a balanced scoring attack
with 14 points as East held off Cyprus and won its second Region 6
game of the season.
East's best moment: The Leopards led most of the way, and
withstood a Cyprus comeback on the Pirates' home floor. Scott
Paulsen and Jeff Vargas added 12 and 11 points.
Cyprus' best moment: Weston Warr and Marquis Newman each had
a season-high 16 points for the Pirates, who rallied from a 29-21
halftime deficit and made a game of it.
Statistical notes: Deng Deng had a pair of three-pointers (and nine
points) for East. The Leopards were 16-23 from the free-throw line;
Cyprus was 15-25. Taylor Jones had 10 points for Cyprus.
What we learned from this game: This was East's second region
victory, which eclipses the total it had all of last season. East is also
3-4 in road games.
Next: East returns home to play Olympus on Jan. 23. Cyprus plays
host to Murray the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Jan. 16 - Murray 70, East 49
Story of the game: Markus Duran scored 21 points and Ken Masic
added 15 as Murray pulled away from East in the second half and
earned its first Region 6 win.
East's best moment: The Leopards stayed close in the first half, and
were actually in the game until the final period. Christian Brown had
15 points, including three treys, while Jeff Vargas had 14.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led just 31-29 at halftime, but
outscored East 39-20 in the second half. Murray helped itself by
hitting 13-15 free throws, many of those down the stretch, to make
this game look like a rout.
Statistical notes: Murray had lost four straight games. Duran had
four three-pointers for Murray. Scott Paulsen had nine points for
Murray. The Leopards have now lost three straight.
What we learned from this game: The top five teams from Region 6
will make the 4A state tournament. East may end up battling
Cottonwood and Granger for that last spot.
Next: East travels to Cyprus on Jan. 20. Murray returns home to take
on Granger the same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Jan. 13 - West 62, East 56
Story of the game: Daniel Wray and Ricardo Saldana led a balanced
scoring attack with 16 points each as West blew out East with a big
third quarter and then hung on to claim the Region 6 win.
East's best moment: The Leopards had a nice fourth-quarter rally,
and this time Christian Brown got some scoring help. East outscored
West 24-16 in the final period. Jeff Vargas led with 17 points.
West's best moment: It was a close first half, with West taking a
26-24 lead into halftime. West outscored East 20-8 in the third
quarter. Chris Barnes added 14 points and Tyrell Corbin 13.
Statistical notes: Brown finished with 15 points for East, and Andrew
Williams had 12. The third quarter is proving to be West's most
dominant this season. Only six players scored for the Panthers.
What we learned from this game: East lost its second straight, but
there were three players scoring in double figures. That might be a
first for this season.
Next: East has a home game against Murray Friday (Jan. 16). West
returns home to play Cyprus the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Jan. 9 - Cottonwood 81, East 73
Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds scored 20 points and Alo Moli
had a season-high 18 as Cottonwood took advantage of a big foul
differential and beat East for its first win of the season.
East's best moment: East shot well from the perimeter, knocking
down 10 three-pointers, and made a nice rally in the fourth quarter.
Christian Brown led the Leopards with 20 points. Deng Deng had 15.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts moved the ball well and, for
the first time, had a decent inside game and it resulted in a win.
Cottonwood led 39-36 at halftime, but extended it to 10 points by the
end of the third quarter. Jake Nelson added 15 points.
Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 31-47 from the free-throw line;
East finished 15-24. The Colts' 81 points was a season high. East
also had a season-high number of points.
What we learned from this game: East didn't have an answer to
Cottonwood's inside-outside game. This was a winnable game, and
the Leopards couldn't do it.
Next: East plays host to rival West on Jan. 13. Cottonwood goes to
Cyprus the same night.
Links: The local media did not cover the game. To read the Deseret
News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click
here.
Jan. 6 - East 38, Granger 35
Story of the game: Christian Brown scored 16 points, including five
three-pointers, as East hung on to edge Granger in their Region 6
opener.
East's best moment: This was a defensive-minded game, but East
slowly extended its lead every quarter. This game went down to the
end, but it was Brown and his long-range shooting that made the
difference.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers made a run at East in the
fourth quarter, but fell just short. The loss was Granger's fourth
straight. The Lancers need to find more offense. Woul Koyom led
with nine points.
Statistical notes: East was just 4-11 from the free-throw line, and it
almost cost it the game. Tre Musgrow led Granger with eight points.
T. J. Tapusoa had seven
What we learned from this game: This was a big win for East and it
puts it into the league lead. The Leopards seem to like close games.
Let's see if they can win them.
Next: East travels to Cottonwood on Jan. 9. Granger plays host to
Cyprus the same night.

Dec. 20 - Canyon View 62, East 61
Story of the game: Christian Brown led a second-half comeback with
a season-high 30 points, but it wasn't enough as host Canyon View
escaped with a narrow non-region win at the Utah Summer Games
Invitational at SUU.
East's best moment: Brown was on fire, from all over the court. He
nailed six three-point baskets and helped East come back from a
46-39 deficit. This was his best output of the year. He was named
East's MVP of the tourney.
Canyon View's best moment: Richard Munford scored 20 points and
led a balanced scoring attack as four Canyon View players reached
double figures. The Falcsons also benefited from a free-throw
advantage, where they connected on 17-31 shots.
Statistical notes: Jeff Vargas had 11 points for East. He was the only
other Leopard player in double figures. It was Canyon View's third
straight win and improved its record to 4-2.
What we learned from this game: Two close games - one win and
one loss - has to be good for East because it's just another way it
prepares the Leopards for region play. It was also the first time
Brown really cut loose. He now averages 18.1 points per game.
Next: East is off until it opens Region 6 play at home against Granger
Jan. 6.

Deseret News brief, click here.
Dec. 19 - East 55, Cedar 52
Story of the game: Christian Brown scored 19 of his 21 points in the
first half, and Jeff Vargas nailed two big free throws in the final
seconds to lift East past Cedar in the first round of the Utah Summer
Games Invitational at SUU.
East's best moment: Cedar led 45-40, but East outscored the
Redmen 15-7 in the final period. With Brown covered most of the
time, the Leopards' Vargas and Scott Paulsen came through.
Cedar's best moment: Joel Einfeldt had 14 points, including eight in
the third quarter when Cedar grabbed the lead. Cedar outscored
East 21-14 during that time.
Statistical notes: Brown had two three-pointers for East. The
Leopards made 15-21 from the free throw line, compared to 8-10 for
Cedar. The loss dropped Cedar to 1-5.
What we learned from this game: East got its second win, which
matches their win total for last season.
Next: East plays another Cedar-area team, Canyon View, today (Dec.
20). Cedar will take on Murray.

the Spectrum story, click here. To read the Deseret News brief, click
here. There was no report in the Salt Lake Tribune.
Dec. 16 - Copper Hills 68, East 53
Story of the game: Preston Stelter scored 14 points, but it was the
Copper Hills defense that came alive, holding East to just four points
in the second quarter, and the Grizzlies claimed the non-region road
win.
East's best moment: Christian Brown scored 23 points, which was
his season high. Still, the Leopards could only rally in the fourth
quarter, when the game was out of reach. Jeff Vargas had 14.
Copper Hills' best moment: Leading 20-15 after the first period,
Copper Hills put the clamps on East's offense. By halftime, it was
33-19. Steven Larson had 11 points, while Tyler Faalogo and
Chandler Allen added eight.
Statistical notes: This was the second straight "good" game by
Copper Hills, which hit 18-21 free throws in an unfamiliar gym. East
was 14-30 from the line. Brown had four three-point baskets in the
loss.
What we learned from this game: East seems headed for another
disappointing season. This game was over by halftime, and the
Leopards have the same record as they did at this time last season.
Next: East travels to Cedar City to play in a two-day tournament at
SUU, starting Friday (Dec. 19). Copper Hills plays at Sky View on
Thursday (Dec. 18).

Dec. 10 - Tooele 59, East 56
Story of the game: Tanner Stuart's basket with six seconds to play
gave Tooele the lead and the Buffaloes didn't give it up en route to a
narrow non-region win over East.
East's best moment: Christian Brown had 14 points for East, which
trailed 28-25 at halftime. Brown had a big third quarter as the
Leopards narrowed the margin and even led by 40-35 at one point.
Tooele's best moment: The Buffaloes made the clutch plays when it
was needed. After Stuart scored, Tooele stopped East and the
Leopards were forced to foul. Brock Haskell made both shots with
2.3 seconds left.
Statistical notes: Tooele made 11-14 free throws, compared to 3-8
for East. Stuart and Taylor Hunt had 11 apiece for Tooele. For East,
Jeff Vargas added 12 points and Scott Paulsen 11.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game for the
Leopards, who need to win these types because they'll get a big
share of them in region play.
Next: East returns home to take on Copper Hills Dec. 16. Tooele
plays host to Ogden Friday (Dec. 12).
Links: The Salt Lake media did not cover the game, but the Tooele
Transcript was there. To read the Transcript story, click here. To read

Dec. 5 - East 53, Park City 32
Story of the game: Jeff Vargas scored 13 points and Christian Brown
added 12 as East pulled away in the fourth quarter and turned this
non -region road game into a rout.
East's best moment: The fourth quarter. East led 38-28 going into
the final period, but outscored Park City 15-4 for the rest of the game.
Scott Paulsen also had 10 points for the Leopards.
Park City's best moment: The Miners needed a big effort to win, and
didn't get it. Tony Epperson had 13 points for the Miners, including
three treys. Ben Portwood put in 10. Park City fell to 0-3 with the loss.
Statistical notes: Nine players scored for East, showing the
Leopards were able to empty their bench in the final quarter. Park
City had just nine field goals, and was 9-21 from the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: East beat Park City last year, one
of the Leopards' two wins. This was a road game, though, and East
played well to win it.
Next: East travels to Tooele on Dec. 10. Park City has a home game
against Ogden the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of the game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Dec. 3 - Skyline 47, East 36
Story of the game: Kevin Wagstaff scored 17 points, and Skyline
finally broke loose in the final two minutes, to escape from rival East
with a narrow non-region victory.
East's best moment: The game was close all the way. East led 12-8
after the first quarter, and it was tied 19-all at halftime. Christian
Brown was East's top scorer with 10 points, including two
three-pointers.
Skyline's best moment: It now seems like the Eagles ruled the
second half, although it was tough to notice it at the time. Skyline
outscored East 28-17 over the final two quarters, but a lot of that
came in the last couple of minutes. Ryan Osterloh added 13 for
Skyline.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot less than 50 percent from the
free-throw line (Skyline 11-23 and East 5-11). East lost a close game
to Skyline last year - 57-52.
What we learned from this game: Another tough loss for the
Leopards, who are 0-2 and headed in the same direction as last
year. That can happen with a tough non-region schedule. The
question is how well will it prepare them for Region 6?
Next: East travels to play Park City, a team it defeated last year, on
Friday (Dec. 5). Skyline returns home to take on Highland the same
night.

Nov. 25 - Judge Memorial 63, East 51
Story of the game: Dee Crandall scored 18 points and Stallon
Saldivar took up where he left off last season with 15 points and 11
rebounds as Judge built a first-half lead and held on to beat East in
both team's season opener.
East's best moment: The Leopards didn't quit. Despite being down
by 20+ points, they rallied in the fourth quarter. Christian Brown led
the way with 17 points.
Judge's best moment: The two teams were tied 11-11 after the first
quarter, but Judge blew out the Leopards after that, outscoring 22-9
in the second stanza and adding to it in the third. Four different
players hit three-point baskets for the Bulldogs.
Statistical notes: Judge had a big advantage at the free-throw line,
hitting 17-25 shots, compared to 3-7 for East. Some of that might
have been because East had to foul near the end.
What we learned from this game: Judge lost some big talent, but
may have just reloaded. The Bulldogs' preseason schedule will tell a
lot, and so far it appears they could challenge for the 3A title again.
We'll see.
Next: East has a home game against Skyline on Dec. 3. Judge
travels to play Hillcrest on Dec. 2.
