GRANGER BOYS BASKETBALL - 2008-09
|

Feb. 24 - West 60, Granger 43
Story of the game: Senior Ricardo Saldana had one of his best
games of the season, scoring 20 points, as West took care of
Granger on "Senior Night" and ended a two-game losing streak.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers did not have an inside game
and relied on the shooting of guard Tre Musgrow, who finished with
a season-high 23 points. Sophomore Alden Algic had six.
West's best moment: The Panthers started slowly, trailing 13-10
after the first quarter, but dominated after that. Tyrell Corbin added
15 points and West's defense - once again - throttled the visitors.
Statistical notes: West finished the regular season 9-2 at home.
Leading scorer Chris Barnes had just six points. West was 11-15
from the free-throw line; Granger was just 3-5. Algic had two
three-pointers for Granger.
What we learned from this game: Granger battled, but West is one
of the few Region 6 teams that has more athletic ability than the
Lancers. They don't match up well.
Next: Granger is done for the season. West opens the 4A state
tourney March 3 against Sky View.

Feb. 20 - Cottonwood 63, Granger 52
Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds scored 20 points, including four
three-pointers, as Cottonwood rallied in the fourth quarter to beat
Granger in a Region 6 game.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers played a great first half, and
held a 27-21 lead. Tre Musgrow was Granger's top scorer with 13
points, while Woul Koyom had 11 and Cody Thorup 10.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts trailed 40-36 entering the
final period, but outscored Granger 27-12 in that span. Cottonwood
had a big free-throw advantage on Granger's home court.
Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 25-34 from the free-throw line;
Granger was 5-13. Raymond Chavez had 15 points and Alo Moli 10
for the Colts. Cottonwood had eight three-pointers; Granger had five.
What we learned from this game: Granger lost its last home game
of the season and finished 2-8 on its home floor.
Next: Granger finishes at West on Feb. 24. Cottonwood takes on
Murray at home the same night.

Feb. 17 - Murray 68, Granger 50
Story of the game: John Hunt led a balanced scoring effort with 14
points and Murray pulled away from Granger in the fourth quarter
and downed the Lancers in a Region 6 game.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers put forth a good effort in a
losing cause. Tre Musgrow had 19 points, Woul Koyom added 14
and Austin Scott had 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 45-39 entering the fourth
quarter, but outscored Granger 23-11 in the final period. Murray had
four players in double figures, and nailed eight three-pointers.
Statistical notes: Markus Duran had 13 points; Wyatt Woodard had
12 and Ken Masic 11. Scott's 10 points was a season high.
What we learned from this game: Granger lost both times to
Murray, but seemed to match up well with Spartans and played
tough in each game.
Next: Granger takes on Cottonwood at home on Feb. 20. Murray
plays host to Cyprus the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Feb. 13 - Highland 57, Granger 34
Story of the game: Spenser Bowen scored 14 points, but it was
Highland's defense that dominated, holding Granger scoreless in
the first quarter en route to a decisive Region 6 victory.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers played evenly with Highland
in the second half, scoring 27 of their 34 points. Woul Koyom was
Granger's top scorer with 11 points.
Highland's best moment: The Rams took a 14-0 lead after the first
quarter, and advanced the margin to 29-7 at halftime. Nick Orchard
had a season-high nine points, as did Taylor Brightwell.
Statistical notes: Five of Granger's 14 field goals were
three-pointers. Granger was 1-5 from the free-throw line. Nine
players scored for Highland, which emptied its bench in the game.
What we learned from this game: The Lancers suffered their 10th
straight loss and have to find themselves again. It's not likely when
you consider the opponents they still have to face.
Next: Granger takes on Murray at home on Feb. 17. Highland plays
at Cottonwood the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Feb. 10 - Olympus 70, Granger 39
Story of the game: Spencer Hille had a season-high 15 points as
Olympus blew out Granger early and claimed the easy win in a
Region 6 game.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers were never in this game,
although they played close to even in the second half. Tre Musgrow
had 12 points and Woul Koyom 10.
Oly's best moment: The Titans started fast, jumping to a 23-4
first-quarter lead, and then expanded it from there. Hille led four
players in double figures as Granger couldn't keep up. Connor
Brady had 14 points.
Statistical notes: Olympus reserves outscored Granger 26-22 in
the second half. Will Watkins had 11 points and Corbin Green 10
for Olympus. Oly won the season series and both games were
routs.
What we learned from this game: Granger's T.J. Tapusoa is no
longer with the team. It wasn't great with him, but it's even worse
without him.
Next: Granger travels to Highland on Feb. 13. Olympus plays host
to Cottonwood the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Feb. 6 - Cyprus 47, Granger 38
Story of the game: Weston Warr led a balanced scoring attack with
14 points as Cyprus held off Granger to earn its first Region 6 win of
the season.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers seem to have lost guard T.J.
Tapusoa as he missed the second consecutive game. Granger
made a nice comeback until it gave up 20 points in the final period.
Woul Koyom had 13 points and Tre Musgrow 10.
Cyprus' best moment: Warr, Marquis Newman and Taylor Jones
got the Pirates off to a good start, and they held on to the lead
throughout. Granger rallied, but the Pirates put it away in the fourth
quarter. Newman had 12 points and Jones 10.
Statistical notes: Only five players scored for Granger; six for
Cyprus. Both teams shot free throws well. Cyprus held Granger to
just two first-quarter points. Cyprus' defensive effort (giving up 38
points) was a season best.
What we learned from this game: Cyprus and Granger are now
tied for the bottom spot in the standings, and will likely stay there.
However, this win could be a momentum-boost for the Pirates.
Next: Granger has Olympus at home on Feb. 10. Cyprus plays at
Cottonwood the same night.

Jan. 30 - East 63, Granger 52
Story of the game: Sophomore Jack Larson scored a season-high
18 points to help East pull away from Granger in the second quarter
and earn the Region 6 victory.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers made a nice rally in the
fourth quarter. Granger played without guard T.J. Tapusoa. Tre
Musgrow led Granger with 19 points and Woul Koyom added 17,
including three treys.
East's best moment: East trailed 9-7 at the end of the first quarter,
but outscored Granger 18-7 to take a nine-point halftime lead,
which it never relinquished. Jeff Vargas added 13 points and Scott
Paulsen had 10.
Statistical notes: East had a big advantage at the foul time. The
Leopards were 22-34 from the line; Granger was just 7-13. Granger
had five three-point baskets; East had just one. The Leopards
leading scorer, Christian Brown, had just five points.
What we learned from this game: Granger has lost six straight
games, and this was a winnable game for the Lancers. Next week
will decide if the Lancers will be a factor, or wither away.
Next: Granger plays at Cyprus on Feb. 6. East has Cottonwood at
home the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 27 - West 60, Granger 37
Story of the game: Chris Barnes scored 18 points and West added
another scoring threat in Tyler Jackson as the Panthers whipped
Granger in a Region 6 game.
Granger's best moment: This was one of those rare occasions
where the Lancers played a team with as much - or more -
athleticism. Not sure this was a winnable game. Tre Musgrow had
10 points; T.J. Tapusoa had nine.
West's best moment: West jumped on Granger early. Playing on
the Lancers' home floor, the Panthers took a 17-7 lead after the first
quarter and were never threatened. Ricardo Saldana had 11 points
for West.
Statistical notes: West was 9-13 from the free-throw line; Granger
was just 3-9. Each team had five three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: Granger has lost five in a row,
but the next two games are winnable. The Lancers need a winning
streak to build momentum in order to reach the post-season.
Next: Granger takes on East at home on Jan. 30. West plays at
Cottonwood the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 23 - Cottonwood 53, Granger 42
Story of the game: Tyson Reynolds scored 15 points and Raymond
Chavez had 12 as sharp-shooting Cottonwood held off Granger in a
Region 6 game.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers took the lead early, but
relinquished it in the second quarter. They made several runs at
Cottonwood, led by Tre Musgrow's 16 points, but couldn't catch up
and had to foul at the end.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts led just 33-30 entering the
fourth quarter, and Granger seemed to have the momentum.
However, the Cottonwood hit its free throws, ending up 13-15 from
the line, and hung on to the win.
Statistical notes: Alo Moli, Korbin Dooley and Jake Nelson had six
points each for Cottonwood. Granger shot well from the line, too,
hitting 16-20. Reynolds had three treys, while Chavez had two.
What we learned from this game: Granger fell to 1-5 in region with
the loss, and has little chance of making the post-season.
Next: Granger has a home game against West on Jan. 27.
Cottonwood travels to Murray the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 20 - Murray 55, Granger 43
Story of the game: David Collette had his best game of the season,
leading a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, as Murray pulled
away from Granger in the fourth quarter and won its second straight
game.
Granger's best moment: This was a winnable game for the
Lancers, but they couldn't hold on. Tre Musgrow had 16 points and
T.J. Tapusoa 12 for Granger.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans trailed 36-35 entering the
final quarter, but outscored Granger 20-7 after that. Markus Duran
added 11 points and Ken Masic and John Hunt each had 10.
Statistical notes: Oddly, Granger had six three-pointers, while
Murray had just three. Granger scored just 16 points in the second
half.
What we learned from this game: Murray picked up a
much-needed win and is now moving into the middle of the pack
and, perhaps, a post-season berth.
Next: Granger travels to Cottonwood on Jan. 23. Murray plays at
Cyprus the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 16 - Highland 55, Granger 41
Story of the game: Spenser Bowen had the hot hand for the
second straight game, wracking up 21 points as Highland turned
back Granger in a Region 6 game.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers played good defense and
Woul Koyom was more of a threat offensively, tying teammate T.J.
Tapusoa for scoring honors with 14 points each.
Highland's best moment: Bowen was hot from the outside, nailing
five three-point baskets as the Rams built a 33-25 lead after three
quarters and then hit their free throws down the stretch. Walker
Jensen had a season-high 10 points.
Statistical notes: Highland hit 22-29 free throws, many of those in
the final period. The Rams had seven three-pointers. Tre Musgrow
had eight points for Granger.
What we learned from this game: Highland has a good defense,
but Granger only scored 14 points in the first half. That's Highland's
style of play. The only way Granger was going to win was to
establish its own style.
Next: Granger goes to Murray on Jan. 20. Highland returns home to
play Cottonwood the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 13 - Olympus 71, Granger 46
Story of the game: Corbin Green scored 19 points and Olympus
went on a 21-0 scoring run in the second quarter to claim a
convincing Region 6 victory over Granger.
Granger's best moment: After trailing big at halftime, Granger
matched Oly in the second half. Tre Musgrow led the Lancers with
15 points.
Oly's best moment: Teamwork can beat Granger, and Oly has
it. The Titans led 10-6 after the first quarter, but it was 39-14 at
halftime. Connor Brady had 12 points and Will Watkins 11.
Statistical notes: Oly made eight three-pointers in the game. Green
and Brady had three each. Both teams shot well from the free-throw
line. Twenty-nine points in a quarter is a season high for Oly.
What we learned from this game: Granger may have athleticism,
but its 1-on-1 style of play doesn't work well against team efforts,
which Oly has. This was a dominating performance by Oly.
Next: Granger has a home game against Highland on Friday (Jan.
16). Oly travels to play Cottonwood.
Links: There were no local reporters covering the game, but the Salt
Lake Tribune sent a photographer. To read the Deseret News brief,

Jan. 9 - Granger 55, Cyprus 40
Story of the game: Granger's guard duo of Tre Musgrow and T.J.
Tapusoa combined for 31 points as the Lancers put together one of
their best games of the season and beat Cyprus in a Region 6
game.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers dominated from the start,
jumping to a 17-7 first-quarter lead and extending it to 44-35
entering the final period.
Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates managed a fourth-quarter rally,
but it didn't amount to much. Cyprus didn't bring its "A" game and it
showed. Marcus Bryce led the way with 10 points.
Statistical notes: Tapusoa had 16 points, while Musgrow had 15.
Woul Koyom added eight. Where was Cyprus' Isaac Johnson? He
didn't score. Did he play?
What we learned from this game: The win ended a four-game
losing streak. It was a dominating victory. Granger has the talent to
be a force in Region 6. Not sure if that will happen, though.
Next: Granger travels to play Olympus on Jan. 13. Cyprus has a
home game against Cottonwood the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 6 - East 38, Granger 35
Story of the game: Christian Brown scored 16 points, including five
three-pointers, as East hung on to edge Granger in their Region 6
opener.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers made a run at East in the
fourth quarter, but fell just short. The loss was Granger's fourth
straight. The Lancers need to find more offense. Woul Koyom led
with nine points.
East's best moment: This was a defensive-minded game, but East
slowly extended its lead every quarter. This game went down to the
end, but it was Brown and his long-range shooting that made the
difference.
Statistical notes: East was just 4-11 from the free-throw line, and it
almost cost it the game. Tre Musgrow led Granger with eight points.
T. J. Tapusoa had seven
What we learned from this game: Granger needs to be worried. It
can't be losing to East and expect to be a candidate to win the
Region 6 title. The Lancers are in trouble.
Next: Granger plays host to Cyprus on Jan. 9. East travels to
Cottonwood the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 2 - Skyline 53, Granger 42
Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh scored 14 points and Casey
Taylor had a season-high 13 as Skyline finally pulled away from
Granger in the fourth and stayed unbeaten following the non-region
win.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers hung in there. T.J. Tapusoa
scored 14 points, Tre Musgrow 12 and Austin Smith had 10 points.
The Lancers' outside shooting also accounted for five three-point
baskets.
Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led just 37-34 going into the
final quarter, but outscored Granger 16-8 to win it. Skyline couldn't
breathe easy until the end.
Statistical notes: Only five players scored for Granger. The Lancers
were 11-16 from the free-throw line, while Skyline was 9-15. Davey
Weixler had nine points for Skyline.
What we learned from this game: This game was closer than
most people expected. Still, it was the Lancers' third straight loss
going into region.
Next: Granger opens Region 6 play at East on Jan. 6. Skyline goes
to Judge Memorial the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Dec. 23 - Copper Hills 57, Granger 42
Story of the game: Steven Cordovia and Steven Larson scored 14
points apiece as Copper Hills used its outside shooting talents to
jump to a big lead and coast to an easy win over Granger in a
non-region game.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers played without T.J. Tapusoa,
who could not play after being ejected from the team's last game.
Tre Musgrow led Granger with 16 points. It was 49-25 after three
quarters before Granger rallied in the fourth.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies put this game away early.
Cordovia, Casey Hughes and Kaden Anselmo had three-pointers
early and Copper Hills took a 13-2 lead. It was 37-16 halftime and,
for all practical purposes, the game was over.
Statistical notes: Cordovia had three treys for Coppers Hills, which
had six overall. Granger had two threes. Both teams shot just over
50 percent from the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: This was a good win for the
Grizzlies, and the second straight team to teach Granger a lesson.
Next: Copper Hills plays host to Syracuse on Dec. 30. Granger
plays at Skyline Jan. 2.
Links: The Deseret News had a reporter at the game. To read the
D-News story, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune box score,
Dec. 20 - Riverton 55, Granger 35
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 11 points and was the pivot
man in Riverton's offense that shot 50 percent from the field in its
easy non-region win over Granger in the Jordan tournament.
Riverton's best moment: This game was never in doubt. Riverton's
teamwork showed and worked far better than Granger's
one-on-one approach. The Silverwolves limited Granger to 25.7
percent shooting (9-35).
Granger's best moment: Guard T.J. Tapusoa hit a three-pointer to
start the game, but the hot-tempered player was whistled for three
first-half fouls and was ejected late in the second quarter. He was
never a factor. Tre Musgrow led the Lancers with 12 points.
Statistical notes: Granger shot 1-11 from the field in the third
quarter. Riverton outrebounded Granger 30-24 with Friel and Ryan
Thomas leading with seven. Woul Koyom had seven for Granger.
What we learned from this game: Granger has individual talent,
but there is no teamwork on offense. Too many players tried to do it
by themselves, and Riverton took advantage.
Next: Granger plays host to Copper Hills on Tuesday (Dec. 23).
Riverton travels to Layton the same night.

there. To read my game blog, click here. To read the Deseret News
brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click here.
Dec. 19 - Granger 50, Jordan 49
Story of the game: T.J. Tapusoa scored 17 points, including an
off-balance three-point basket as time expired, to lift Granger to a
thrilling non-region win over Jordan in the first round of the Jordan
tournament.
Granger's best moment: The game was close the entire time.
Tapusoa's 17 points was a season high. He also had help as
teammate Woul Koyom added 16.
Jordan's best moment: Colton Burgon had 17 points for the
Beetdiggers, while Curt Follett had 15. Follett was Jordan's outside
shooting threat, with three treys.
Statistical notes: Jordan led 41-38 entering the final quarter.
Jordan Bernardo, the Diggers' leading scorer, had just four points.
Both teams shot about the same from the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: This was a huge win for
Granger, which was coming off a disappionting loss to Woods
Cross. The Lancers now can feel like "giant killers."
Next: Granger plays Riverton tonight (Dec. 20) at the final of the
Jordan tourney. Jordan plays Lehi in the first game.
Links: There were no reporters at the game, but the Salt Lake
Tribune sent a photographer. To read the Deseret News brief, click

Trib's photo gallery, click here.
Dec. 16 - Woods Cross 55, Granger 30
Story of the game: Tyler Stahle scored 24 points and the Woods
Cross defense held Granger to just 10 first-half points - as a team -
in the Wildcats' thrashing of the Lancers in a non-region game.
Granger's best moment: Maybe the Lancers were rusty? It had
been 11 days since the last played. The highlight for Granger would
have to be in the second half, when the game was already decided.
T.J. Tapusoa and Woul Koyom led the Lancers with seven points
apiece.
Woods Cross'' best moment: The Wildcats improved to 4-2 on the
season with a dominating performance. While Stahle kept up his
scoring pace, the Wildcats' defense was impressive, too.
Statistical notes: Woods Cross led 26-10 at halftime, and was able
to empty its bench. Granger made just eight field goals, of which
three were from long range.
What we learned from this game: Woods Cross is the same team
that lost to West last week, so the Lancers have to be concerned
about what they might face in Region 6 play.
Next: Granger plays host Jordan in the first round of the two-day
Jordan tourney, which starts Friday (Dec. 19). Woods Cross returns
home to take on Tooele tonight (Dec. 17).

the Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune
article, click here.
Dec. 5 - Granger 52, Kearns 35
Story of the game: Tre Musgrow scored 18 points and Granger
pulled away in the fourth quarter to gain its first victory of the season.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers led just 29-23 going into the
fourth quarter, then found their offense and added 23 more to their
total. Austin Scott added 12 points for Granger.
Kearns' best moment: Still not a good offensive showing for the
Cougars. They fell behind 10-4 in the first quarter, but rallied to
make it a game until the end.
Statistical notes: Scott was Granger's outside threat, putting in
three treys. The Lancers had a big advantage from the free-throw
line, likely because Kearns had to foul at the end.
What we learned from this game: This was a convincing win for
the Lancers, who now have 11 days off until their next game. Plenty
of time to correct a few things.
Next: Granger returns to action Dec. 16 with a home game against
Woods Cross. Kearns plays at Taylorsville Dec. 9.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune
article, click here.
Dec. 2 - Taylorsville 68, Granger 48
Story of the game: The Lancers had no answer to Jordan
Edgington, as the 6-foot-5 senior scored 31 points in the Warriors'
convincing home win.
Granger's best moment: Tre Musgrow led the Lancers with 17
points. Cody Thorup had 13 and T.J. Tapusoa 11. Granger is a
smaller, quicker team and yet has not learned how to handle bigger
players.
Taylorsville's best moment: The difference was the second half.
Taylorsville led just 26-20 at intermission. Edgington was the
Warriors only player who scored in double figures. Even though
Granger knew who was going to score, it couldn't stop him.
Statistical leaders: The Lancers have some shooters again. They
were 15-21 from the free throw line. Granger actually led 8-7 after
the first quarter.
What we learned from this game: Last year's team didn't impress
anyone in their first game either. It just shows the team has a lot to
learn. It's a long season.
Next: Granger travels to Kearns for a Friday night (Dec. 5) game.
Taylorsville has a home game against Cyprus the same night.
