Feb. 17 - Murray 45, Granger 39

Story of the game: Eleni Saltas scored 15 points and Maddy
Woodard added 11 as Murray ran off to a big lead and held on to beat
Granger to capture the Region 6 championship.

Granger's best moment: Vahine Tuigamala and Mary Lavekihelotu
led Granger's fourth-quarter rally. Tuigamala finished with 14 points
and Lavekihelotu had 10. Granger held Murray to just two points in
the final quarter.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans led just 11-10 after one
quarter, but built a 14-point margin after the second and third
periods. Murray had its outside shooters working with five three-
pointers.

Statistical notes: The teams shot comparably at the free-throw line.
Granger did not have a three-point basket. Mariah Duran had nine
points for Murray.

What we learned from this game: The loss means Granger finished
the season in the Region 6 cellar, but it was an improvement from
last year.

Next: Granger is done for the season. Murray advances to play Orem
in the 4A state tournament Feb. 24.

Feb. 13 - Highland 67, Granger 33

Story of the game: Chanel Roe scored 18 points as Highland blew
out Granger and clinched third place in Region 6.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers played tough in the first
quarter, but couldn't find the offense to keep up with Highland after
that. Vahine Tuigamala was Granger's top scorer with 11 points.

Highland's best moment: The Rams led 13-11 after the first quarter,
but blew the game open by outscoring Granger 21-6 in the second
period. Kave Lea'aetoa added 10 points as 11 players scored for
Highland.

Statistical notes: Highland's defense harassed Granger all night as
the Lancers' top scorers, Martha Haiola and Mary Lavekihelotu, were
held to one basket each. The 34-point margin was Highland's
biggest all season.

What we learned from this game: After a tough loss to Olympus, the
Lancers didn't seem prepared for this game. It has been a difficult
season and the end is just one game away.

Next:  Granger finishes its season by traveling to Murray Feb. 17.
Highland goes to Cottonwood the same night.

Feb. 10 - Olympus 58, Granger 57

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 20 points as Olympus
rallied from a big first-quarter deficit to edge Granger in a Region 6
game.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers dominated the first half and
seemed confident heading into halftime. Mary Lavekihelotu led with
22 points and Vahine Tuigamala had 15.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 18-7 after the first quarter and
still were 10 points behind at halftime. They scored 41 of their 58
points in the second half. Kainoa Bowman added 15 points.

Statistical notes: Granger hit seven three-pointers in the game. This
was the Lancers' best offensive output of the season. All of
Bowman's points came on three-pointers for Olympus.

What we learned from this game: Despite their records, Oly had a
tough time with Granger, winning by only two points in their other
game.

Next: Granger has Highland for its last home game on Feb. 13.
Olympus plays host to Cottonwood the same night.

Feb. 6 - Cyprus 59, Granger 53 (OT)

Story of the game: Kirstie Henriod scored 29 points, including a
perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line in overtime, to lift Cyprus past rival
Granger in a Region 6 game.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers were hoping to win their first
home since early December. Vahine Tuigamala and Martha Haiola
had good games. Tuigamala had 18 points and Haiola 16.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates trailed by four points entering the
fourth quarter, but rallied to tie the game, 47-47. Ashlyn Mulford had
10 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

Statistical notes: Granger was 11-30 from the free-throw line;
Cyprus was 20-32. Haiola had four three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: Granger played tough, but
couldn't quite pull this one off. The Lancers' last three games are the
top three teams in the region.

Next: Granger travels to Olympus on Feb. 10. Cyprus plays at
Cottonwood the same night.

Feb. 3 - Cottonwood 43, Granger 38

Story of the game: Erika Nash scored 12 points as Cottonwood took
a 11-point lead going into the fourth quarter and held on to beat
Granger in a Region 6 game.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers played well in the final period,
outscoring Cottonwood 16-10, but couldn't get close enough. Martha
Haiola had 12 points, while Ryna Leota added 10.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts led from the start, and just
expanding the advantage until Granger rallied in the final period. The
win ended a two-game losing streak and started an "easy" portion of
their schedule where they need to win some games.

Statistical notes: Granger was 7-21 from the free-throw line;
Cottonwood was 12-20. Haiola had three treys for Granger. Vahine
Tuigamala had eight points for Granger.

What we learned from this game: Granger was mathematically
eliminated for post-season play with the loss.

Next: Granger has Cyprus at home on Feb. 6. Cottonwood plays at
East the same night.

Jan. 30 - Granger 50, East 36

Story of the game: Mary Lavekihelotu scored a season-high 21
points to lead Granger to its first Region 6 victory over the season
over East.

Granger's best moment: Granger led 21-20 at halftime, but pulled
away in the second half. The Lancers built their lead to nine points by
the end of the third quarter. Ryna Leota added 13 points and Martha
Haiola had 10.

East's best moment: The Leopards led 9-8 after the first quarter and
stayed right with Granger. Liz Fetzer was East's top scorer with 13
points.

Statistical notes: East connect on just 10-29 free throws; Granger
was 13-23. East won by 15 points earlier this season on Granger's
home floor.

What we learned from this game: East and Granger are now tied in
the region standings, and it now seems obvious that both teams
won't reach the 4A state tournament.

Next: Granger plays at Cottonwood on Feb. 3. East is at Olympus the
same night.

Jan. 27 - West 51, Granger 42

Story of the game: Amy Christensen and Destynee Rios scored 12
points apiece, but it was Granger's defense that made the difference
in the second half of West's Region 6 victory.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers took a 14-10 lead at the end
of the first quarter, but had trouble scoring after halftime. Martha
Haiola paced Granger with 11 points, while Mary Lavekihelotu had 10.

West's best moment: The Panthers trailed 29-27 at halftime, but
held Granger to single digits in each quarter. Ashley Quarles added
10 points for West.

Statistical notes: West was 7-17 from the free-throw line; Granger
was 4-12. Rios had three treys for West, and Quarles had two.
Haiola had two treys for Granger.

What we learned from this game: The loss was Granger's ninth
straight, but the Lancers were competitive. Let's see if Granger can
win a region game.

Next: Granger is at East on Jan. 30. West travels to Cottonwood the
same night.

Jan. 23 - Cottonwood 63, Granger 34

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz, Fehi Fakailoatonga and Karlee
Paloukos scored 15 points apiece as Cottonwood jumped to a big
first-quarter and had no trouble beating Granger in a Region 6 game.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers trailed 54-25 and, with both
teams substituing freely, played Cottonwood even after that. Martha
Haiola was the only big scorer, with 22 points.

Cottonwood's best moment: Paloukos' total was a season high and
her four three-point baskets helped spur the Colts to a 21-6 lead
after the first quarter. They did it again - by the same amount - in the
third period to turn the game into a rout.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 11-20 from the free-throw line;
Granger was 7-13. The win ended a two-game losing streak for the
Colts.

What we learned from this game: This was Granger's eighth
straight loss, and the defeats are by wider margins now, even though
the opponents are not any better. It's possible Granger is losing
confidence.

Next: Granger plays at West on Jan. 27. Cottonwood travels to Murray
the same night.

Jan. 20 - Murray 53, Granger 30

Story of the game: Maddy Woodard and Mariah Duran scored 11
points each as Murray raced to a big lead early and eased to its
Region 6 win over Granger.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers offense got rolling, but it
wasn't until the fourth quarter. Martha Haiola had a season-high 20
points.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 10-2 after the first quarter
and 24-7 at halftime. Duran had three treys to get the offense rolling.
It was Murray's fourth straight win.

Statistical notes: Granger was 5-10 from the free-throw line; Murray
was 3-7, so there weren't many fouls called in this game. Murray had
six three-point baskets.

What we learned from this game: Granger is pretty much eliminated
from post-season play. With their 0-6 record, the Lancers would have
to win the rest of their games to have a chance.

Next: Granger has Cottonwood at home on Jan. 23. Murray travels to
Cyprus the same night.

Jan. 16 - Highland 52, Granger 50 (OT)

Story of the game: Christobel Faka’osi hit a three-pointer at the
buzzer in overtime to lift Highland to an exciting victory over Granger in
a Region 6 game.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers made a nice comeback. They
trailed 27-17 at halftime, but just kept chipping away at Highland's
lead. Martha Haiola led Granger with 16 points.

Highland's best moment: The game was tied 44-44 going into the
extra session. Faka'osi had five of Highland's eight points in OT. The
win was the Rams' most exciting this season and helped make up
for the one-point loss to Murray on Tuesday.

Statistical notes: Granger was a terrible 6-20 from the free-throw
line. Chanel Roe had 10 points for Highland and Vaiola Lea’aetoa
had nine. Four of Highland's five region games have been decided
by three points or less.

What we learned from this game: The loss dropped Granger to 0-5
in region play. Unless a big winning streak starts soon, the Lancers
will stay in the region basement.

Next: Granger plays host to Murray on Jan. 20. Highland plays host to
Cottonwood the same night.

Jan. 13 - Olympus 46, Granger 44

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 17 points, and she and
Amanda Diblee keyed a huge fourth-quarter rally that enabled
Olympus to beat Granger for its fourth straight win.

Granger's best moment: This was the Lancers' game to win ... until
the fourth quarter. Granger got 13 points from Mary Lavekihelotu.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 33-21 entering the final
period, but Diblee hit a pair of big three-point baskets that sparked
the rally. Diblee finished with 12 points.

Statistical notes: The Lancers were 3-11 from the free-throw line,
which may have Oly's rally. Martha Haiola had nine points for
Granger, which lost its fifth straight.

What we learned from this game: Wins may be tough now that
Granger has its spot in the region cellar.

Next: Granger goes to Highland for a game Jan. 16. Oly travels to
Cottonwood the same night.

Jan. 9 - Cyprus 62, Granger 51

Story of the game: Kristie Henriod led a balanced scoring attack with
16 points as Cyprus pulled away from Granger in the second quarter
and hung on for its first Region 6 victory.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers narrowed the gap in the third
quarter, thanks to the scoring of Vahine Tuigamala. Their offense
fizzled in the fourth quarter.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates trailed 18-17 after the first
quarter, but dominated the second period to take a nine-point lead.
Ashlyn Mulford had 14 points.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot free throws badly. Granger was
10-26, and Cyprus 16-34. Kelly Uriarte and Emma Matuauto had 11
points each for Cyprus.

What we learned from this game: The Lancers are on a losing
streak. It's at four straight now and needs to stop before they get too
far behind in region.

Next: Granger returns home to take on Olympus on Jan. 13. Cyprus
has yet another home game - this time against
Cottonwood.

Jan. 6 - East 44, Granger 29

Story of the game: Liz Fetzer scored a season-high 16 points as
East built a small lead and slowly expanded it throughout the game.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers played evenly with East in the
second and third quarters, but the other periods made the difference.
Martha Haiola led the Lancers with nine points, while Vahine
Tuigamala had eight.

East's best moment: The Leopards took the lead early, claiming a
10-4 first-quarter lead, and never relinquished it. East hit 8-14 free
throws, which was enough down the stretch to hold on to the win.

Statistical notes: Granger once again shot poorly from the free-throw
line, hitting just 8-22. The 29 points was a season low and the best
defensive effort by East.

What we learned from this game: This was Granger's third straight
loss and its starting the Region 6 season 0-2. This is not a good
sign.

Next: Granger goes to Cyprus on Jan. 9. East plays at Cottonwood
the same night.

Jan. 2 - West 37, Granger 31

Story of the game: Amy Christensen scored 11 points and West took
advantage of Granger's poor free-throw shooting, especially in the
fourth quarter, to earn a win in both team's Region 6 opener.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers made a nice rally in the fourth
quarter and attacked the basket. They hit only 2-13 free throws in the
fourth quarter and 8-25 for the game.

West's best moment: The Panthers took the lead for good in the
second quarter in this defensive-minded game. Valencia Manu
backed up Christensen with eight points.

Statistical notes: Martha Haiola and Vahine Tuigamala scored 10
points each for Granger. West was 8-14 from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game for
Granger. It just didn't happen because the Lancers need more free-
throw practice.

Next: Granger takes on East at home on Jan. 6. West has a home
game against
Cottonwood the same night.

Dec. 19 - Hillcrest 63, Granger 46

Story of the game: Kelsey Heard scored 14 points and Caitlin Sharp
had 13 as Hillcrest got balanced scoring for the first time this season
and bounced Granger in a non-region game.

Granger's best moment: Once again, Mary Lavekihelotu was
missing. This time, the Lancers had a better offensive response, but
it wasn't enough. Martha Haiola led with 14 points and Vahine
Tuigamala had 12.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies led just 26-25 at halftime, but
really came around in the second half. Lexi Amundsen and Hannah
Thompson had 10 points apiece for Hillcrest.

Statistical notes: Hillcrest's 63 points was a season high, and the
most given up by Granger. The Lancers shot a season best 13-23
from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: This was Granger's last game
before region play, and the Lancers are in good shape as long as
Lavekihelotu is on the court.

Next: Granger is off until it plays host to Region 6 foe West on Jan. 2.
Hillcrest travels to West Jordan Dec. 30.

Dec. 16 - Granger 44, Tooele 34

Story of the game: Things are back to normal for Granger as Mary
Lavekihelotu scored 13 points and Granger put together a great third
quarter to beat Tooele and end its two-game losing streak.

Granger's best moment: Trailing 18-15, the Lancers outscored
Tooele 14-3 during the third quarter to earn a big lead. Martha Haiola
added 11 points for Granger.

Tooele's best moment: Still winless Tooele had a nice defensive
effort that gave them the lead going into halftime. This was the
Buffaloes' best chance for a victory since their season opener.
Sharon Lyman led Tooele with 14 points.

Statistical notes: Granger had 15 points in the first half, then
matched it in each of the third and fourth quarters. Granger hit 7-16
free throws, which is its best percentage all season.

What we learned from this game: It's good to get back to winning
and doing it in a familiar manner. Tooele is not a good team, so
playing the Buffaloes ended up being well-timed.

Next: Granger has a home game against Hillcrest Dec. 19. Tooele
travels to Southern Utah Dec. 18-19 for a two-game road trip.

Dec. 12 - Ogden 54, Granger 23

Story of the game: Olivia Newman scored 14 points and Ogden took
advantage of Mary Lavekihelotu's absence to roll to an easy non-
region win over Granger.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers weren't the same team with
their scoring leader. They scored just two points in the second
quarter and fell behind 29-12. Ryna Leota led with six points.

Ogden's best moment: The outcome of this game was never in
doubt. Ogden emptied its bench in the fourth quarter and even its
reserves were dominating Granger.

Statistical notes: Granger's free-throw woes continued. The Lancers
were 0-7 from the line. They did connect on three treys, however. Keri
Lammert was Ogden's three-point threat with a pair of treys.

What we learned from this game: Don't know what happened to
Lavekihelotu, but it's a good example of why Granger needs others to
step up when necessary.

Next: Granger travels to play Tooele on Dec. 16. Ogden has a home
game against Wasatch the same night.

Dec. 9 - Kearns 58, Granger 48

Story of the game: Brooke Larsen scored 16 points and Dallas Vega
and Micalee Orton had 10 points apiece as Kearns handed Granger
its first loss of the season in a non-region game.

Granger's best moment: Mary Lavekihelotu led Granger with 20
points and Vahine Tuigamala had 14. The Lancers, however, didn't
have their usual third-period rally. Instead, Kearns extended its lead.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars led from the start and held a 31-
20 halftime advantage. Kearns was efficient and played a good
game. Vega was the Cougars' primary outside shooting threat with
two three-pointers.

Statistical notes: Kearns scored 19 points in the first quarter, which
is the most Granger has given up all season. The Cougars also hit
12-20 from the free-throw line. Once again, Granger was sub-50
percent at 6-15.

What we learned from this game: The Lancers suffered their first
loss, and were outplayed. At some point, the free-throw problems are
going to cost them a game.

Next: Granger travels to play Ogden Dec. 12. Kearns goes to
Farmington, N.M. to play in the Webb Toyota Invitational Dec. 18-20.

Dec. 3 - Granger 57, Viewmont 46

Story of the game: Vahine Tuigamala and Martha Haiola scored 14
points apiece to lead Granger to its third straight victory with a non-
region home win over Viewmont.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers showed a lot more offense
and - once again - made their move with an impressive third quarter.
Tuigamala also had 11 rebounds for Granger.

Viewmont's best moment: The Vikings fell to 0-2 with the loss, but
did mount a nice rally in the fourth quarter. Jasmine Godfrey had 14
points, Alyssa Smith 12 and Tyler McFarland 10 for Viewmont.

Statistical notes: Once again, Granger shot poorly from the free-
throw line (10-29), but it didn't make a difference. Mary Lavekihelotu
had nine points for the Lancers.

What we learned from this game: Granger got scoring help for
Lavekihelotu and it made a difference. The Lancers are now 3-0 on
the season.

Next: Granger takes on neighborhood rival Kearns on Dec. 9.
Viewmont has a home game against
Hillcrest Dec. 5.

Dec. 2 - Granger 34, Waterford 27

Story of the game: Mary Lavekihelotu - once again - led Granger in
scoring with 14 points as the Lancers - once again - dominated the
third quarter and claimed a non-region road victory.

Granger's best moment: In two games, the third quarter has
become the Lancers' time. Granger led 16-9 at halftime, but
outscored Waterford 13-5 to build an insurmountable lead.

Waterford's best moment: Lanie Ward scored 11 points and had
nine rebounds. She also led a nice fourth-quarter rally to make the
score appear closer.

Statistical notes: Granger was 5-14 from the free-throw line, which
is lousy but slightly better than its first game.

What we learned from this game: This was another defensive
battle, but 34 points aren't going to win many games. Still, Granger is
2-0 and who can complain about that? Lavekihelotu has become
Granger's scoring star.

Next: Granger returns home to play Viewmont tonight (Dec. 3).
Waterford has a home game against
Lehi Dec. 4.

Nov. 25 - Granger 44, Park City 37

Story of the game: Mary Lavekihelotu scored 19 points and grabbed
six rebounds as Granger pulled away from Park City in the third
quarter and held on to defeat the Miners in both team's season
opener.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers led just 21-19 at halftime, but
Lavekihelotu hit a couple of three-pointers and that gave Granger the
margin it needed. No other player scored in double figures.

Park City's best moment: This was a winnable game, and the
Miners hung with Granger in every quarter but the third. Laurel Kasel
had a game-high 16 points for Park City.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot horribly from the free-throw line.
Park City was 10-32 and Granger was 6-22.

What we learned from this game: The Lancers won. The Lancers
won. This was a big win since the team finished without a victory last
year.

Next: Granger travels to play Waterford on Dec. 2. Park City has a

Juan Diego the same night.
