           HILLCREST BOYS BASKETBALL
Feb. 24 - Skyline 54, Hillcrest 40

Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh and Kevin Wagstaff scored 15
points apiece as Skyline built an early lead and kept Hillcrest at bay in
the final Region 2 game for both teams.

Hillcrest's best moment: Curtis Blackmore and Austin Jackson had
their best scoring efforts of the season. Blackmore finished with 17
points and Jackson had 15.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles took a 13-5 lead in the first
quarter and were never threatened. Davey Weixler added 13 points for
Skyline.

Statistical notes: Hillcrest was 10-16 from the free-throw line; Skyline
was 7-13. Jackson and Blackmore had two three-pointers each for
Hillcrest. Kyle Maughan had just four points.

What we learned from this game: The Huskies beat Taylorsville
twice in region play this season, but couldn't quite pull off any upsets.
The season was pretty comparable to last year.

Next: Hillcrest is done for the year. Skyline advanced to the 5A state
tournament and will play Pleasant Grove March 2.

Feb. 20 - Brighton 69, Hillcrest 59

Story of the game: Neil Richards joined Sam Wunderli as Brighton's
leading scorers with 16 points as the Bengals beat Hillcrest and kept
their hopes alive of a Region 2 title.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies owned the first half, jumping to
a 15-7 first-quarter lead. Kyle Maughan was the top scorer with 18
points, while Austin Jackson had 13 and Danny Thompson 10.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed 29-20 at halftime, but
got their offense in gear in the second half. Allen Barker and Loi
Masina chipped in with season-highs for each (11).

Statistical notes: The last two games have been Hillcrest's worst
defensive outings. Brighton scored 49 of its 69 points in the second
half. The Bengals were 25-29 from the free-throw line. Hillcrest had
four three-pointers, all from different players.

What we learned from this game: Hillcrest seems to be moving
away from its original game plan of playing good defense. Now, it's
trying to outscore teams and that isn't working either.

Next: Hillcrest ends its season Feb. 24 when it travels to Skyline.
Brighton
plays host to Taylorsville.

Feb. 13 - Alta 44, Hillcrest 31

Story of the game: Nate Nielsen scored 11 points and Ammon Olsen
and Jed DeLeeux added 10 each as Alta out-defensed Hillcrest and
ended the Huskies' chances of post-season play.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies played their game in the first
half, and had Alta worried. Kyle Maughan led Hillcrest with nine points,
and the Huskies even managed a couple of three-pointers.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led 23-20 at halftime, but limited
Hillcrest to three points in the third quarter and blew the game open.
Alta didn't shoot free throws well, but still held its lead late in the game.

Statistical notes: Alta was 8-16 from the free-throw line; Hillcrest was
11-19. Jordy Brown added eight points for Alta, which swept the
season series.

What we learned from this game: The Huskies have two games
remaining, and they could do some damage to an opponent's region
seed. Hillcrest is a "spoiler" now.

Next: Hillcrest takes on Brighton at home Feb. 20. Alta plays host to
Skyline the same night.

Feb. 10 - Hillcrest 63, Taylorsville 59

Story of the game: Curtis Blackmore had a season-high 14 points
and Kyle Maughan added 13 as Hillcrest held off Taylorsville and kept
its post-season hopes alive.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies trailed 28-25 at halftime, but
outscored Taylorsville 18-9 in the third quarter to take the lead. The
fourth quarter was an offensive festival, but Hillcrest hit 17-24 free
throws for the game.

Taylorsville's best moment: This was the Warriors' last best chance
to earn a Region 2 victory. Jordan Edgington had 18 points and Stevie
McCloyn 17, but their fourth-quarter rally wasn't enough.

Statistical notes: Hillcrest's 63 points was a season high. Austin
Jackson had 11 points for the Huskies. Surprisingly, Hillcrest did not
have a single three-point basket. Tyson Taylor had 14 points for
Taylorsville.

What we learned from this game: The Huskies swept the season
series with Taylorsville, and now face the unlikely task of having to win
the rest of their games to reach the 5A state tournament.

Next: Hillcrest takes on Alta at home Feb. 13. Taylorsville plays host to
Skyline the same night.

Feb. 6 - Jordan 67, Hillcrest 49

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo led a balanced scoring attack
with 13 points as Jordan buried Hillcrest in a Region 2 game for the
second time this season and virtually clinched a 5A state tournament
berth.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies still had a chance in the first
half, but Jordan seemed to figure out their defense after that. Kyle
Maughan led Hillcrest with 15 points and Curtis Blackmore had 10.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers led 29-21 at halftime, but
then poured it on in the third quarter to take a 19-point lead. Kevin
Goldsmith and Curt Follett had 12 points; Colton Burgon had 11.

Statistical notes: Jordan beat Hillcrest 61-41 earlier. These two wins
were the most lopsided of any Region 2 game this season. Jordan hit
20-26 free throws; Hillcrest was 13-20. Bernardo had two
three-pointers; Bubba Pecht had a pair for Hillcrest.

What we learned from this game: Jordan has a two-game lead on
Hillcrest for the last state tourney berth, and owns the tiebreaker. One
more win - or a Hillcrest loss - will clinch it.

Next: Jordan travels to play Skyline Feb. 10. Hillcrest goes to
Taylorsville the same night.

Feb. 3 - Skyline 53, Hillcrest 23

Story of the game: Kevin Wagstaff scored 20 points, but it was
Skyline's defense that played its best game of the season en route to
an easy Region 2 win.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies' defense played well in the first
period, but with such a big deficit at halftime, Hillcrest had to adjust its
game plan. Curtis Blackmore ended up with 12 points and Kyle
Maughan had eight.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles' defense dominated, and never
let Hillcrest get into its game plan. Skyline led 8-4 after the first
quarter, but dominated the second period and took a 21-6 advantage
into halftime.

Statistical notes: Ryan Osterloh had 13 points for Skyline, and
Jaxson Judkins added 11. Wagstaff and Judkins had three treys each.
The 23 points given up was Skyline's best effort this season.

What we learned from this game: This might have been a good
place for an upset, but Skyline didn't let it happen. In fact, the Eagles
taught Hillcrest a lesson in defense.

Next: Skyline goes to Brighton on Feb. 6. Hillcrest plays host to
Jordan the same night.

Jan. 30 - Brighton 45, Hillcrest 30

Story of the game: Will Cannon scored 11 points and Sam Wunderli
added 10 as Brighton broke open a close game in the third quarter
and moved into a first-place tie in Region 2 with a win over Hillcrest.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies' defense held Brighton to three
points in the second quarter and was playing its style of game.
Jeremy Ulrich was the top scorer with seven points.

Brighton's best moment: The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but
Brighton went on a 15-3 run in the third quarter to break the game
open. The Bengals' defense has its best game of the season.

Statistical notes: In all of Hillcrest's five wins, it has scored 40 or
more points. The Huskies had just 10 field goals. Leading scorer Kyle
Maughan had just five points. It was the first time Cannon was the
leading scorer.

What we learned from this game: The Huskies played a great first
half, and had Brighton frustrated. That ended quickly after halftime.
Hillcrest still needs to find a scorer. Maughan can't do it all the time.

Next: Hillcrest has Skyline at home on Feb. 3. Brighton plays at
Taylorsville the same night.

Jan. 23 - Alta 35, Hillcrest 33

Story of the game: Jed DeLeeuw led the way with 12 points as Alta
hung on to beat Hillcrest and stay in first place in Region 2.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies made a nice rally to make this
an exciting game in the final minutes. The defense had its best game
of the season. Kyle Maughan led Hillcrest with 14 points.

Alta's best moment: Playing at Hillcrest's pace, the Hawks took a
22-13 lead into halftime, but had to withstand the Huskies' rally.
Ammon Olsen and Jordy Brown added eight points apiece.

Statistical notes: Alta was just 6-12 from the free-throw line; Hillcrest
was 10-16. In Hillcrest's two best defensive efforts, it hasn't won
either. Hillcrest outscored Alta 20-13 in the second half.

What we learned from this game: The Huskies need to upset a few
region foes to make the post-season, and they had a chance here.
They can't miss these opportunities.

Next: Hillcrest goes to Brighton on Jan. 30. Alta travels to Skyline the
same night.

Jan. 20 - Hillcrest 53, Taylorsville 41

Story of the game: Kyle Maughan scored 18 points and Hillcrest
nailed 17-18 free throws in the fourth quarter and claimed its first
Region 2 victory of the season.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies led most of the game by
playing their style, which includes tough defense. Late in the game,
Taylorsville was forced to foul and Hillcrest made them pay for it.

Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors stayed close until near
the end, but their normal scorers were not coming through. Daren
Oakeson ended up leading the team with 11 points.

Statistical notes: Hillcrest was 25-31 from the free-throw line for the
game. Bridger Dallimore backed up Maughan with 10 points. Jordan
Edgington had eight points and Stevie McCloyn seven for Taylorsville.

What we learned from this game: Hillcrest sent Taylorsville to the
region cellar. The Huskies improved their record to 3-2 at home,
showing they do have a home-court advantage.

Next: Hillcrest travels to play Alta Jan. 23. Taylorsville goes to Skyline
the same night.

Jan. 16 - Jordan 61, Hillcrest 41

Story of the game: Colton Burgon led a balance scoring attack with
18 points as Jordan opened the Region 2 season with a convincing
home win over Hillcrest.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies didn't maintain a threat, which
is rare for them. Curtis Blackmore led Hillcrest with 10 points. The
Huskies trailed the whole game, but only had one three-point basket.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers established their offense
early, which is rare against a defensive-minded Hillcrest team. Jordan
hit 22-29 free throws, many of those down the stretch, to even expand
the lead.

Statistical notes: Jordan's 61 points was the second most Hillcrest
has given up this season. Jordan Bernardo had 14 points, while Curt
Follett had 12 and Kevin Goldsmith 11. Bernardo had three treys.

What we learned from this game: The Huskies gave up 19 points in
the first quarter. That shows they weren't ready to play. This team
needs to improve quickly or it's headed for the region cellar.

Next: Hillcrest takes on Taylorsville at home on Jan. 20. Jordan plays
host to
Skyline the same night.

Jan. 13 - Hillcrest 41, Kearns 38

Story of the game: Kyle Maughan scored 14 points as Hillcrest shook
off Kearns' comeback attempt and claimed a road victory in both
team's final non-region game.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies jumped to a 12-4 first-quarter
lead, but Kearns whittled it down and then tied it with a big third
quarter. Curtis Blackmore added eight points and Hillcrest made just
enough free throws to hold on to the win.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars made a nice comeback after
trailing most of the game. Justyn Searle had eight points, Fatu Moala
seven and Toby Thacker seven, including a couple of three-pointers.

Statistical notes: Hillcrest was 11-18 from the free-throw line; Kearns
about the same at 13-21. The game was tied 30-30 entering the
fourth period. Moala had a trey for Kearns, too.

What we learned from this game: Both of these teams will likely have
trouble against their region competition, which starts Friday. Playing
good defense is the best way to earn a few wins.

Next: Hillcrest opens Region 3 play Friday (Jan. 16) at Jordan. Kearns
has its Region 2 opener the same night against
Copper Hills.

Jan. 8 - Riverton 46, Hillcrest 45

Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 20 points, including two free
throws with 14 seconds remaining that ended up making the
difference in Riverton's narrow win over Hillcrest.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies scored 30 of their 45 points in
the second half, so clearly something was learned at halftime. Kyle
Maughan had his best game in a while with 19 points. Jeremy Ulrich
and Curtis Blackmore added eight each.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 24-15 at halftime, but
Hillcrest clawed back. Riverton simply isn't the team it used to be - not
yet anyway. This is a game it could have lost, but Friel came through
in the clutch.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot free throws well. Riverton was
16-22, while Hillcrest was 13-17. Riverton is 3-0 in close games
(decided by three points or less).

What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game for
Hillcrest, and a good comeback from its previous game. Still, the
Huskies are now 3-7 and looking more like they might end up playing
more of a "spoiler" role in region play.

Next: Hillcrest plays at Kearns Jan. 13. Riverton starts region play at
home against
Bingham Jan. 16.

Jan. 6 - Bingham 64, Hillcrest 28

Story of the game: Ben Clifford scored 18 points, but it was
Bingham's defense that dominated play in the Miners' easy
non-region win over Hillcrest.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies pride themselves on their
defense, and were still in the game at halftime. Hillcrest needs
offensive help. Jeremy Ulrich had eight points.

Bingham's best moment: Bingham held a 21-10 halftime lead, but
the Miners' offense came alive in the third quarter and that started the
blowout. Remington Peck added 12 points for Bingham.

Statistical notes: Top scorer Kyle Maughan had just four points for
Hillcrest. Ten points in a half won't win many games. Bingham hit
15-20 free throws (75 percent). The 64 points given up was a season
high for Hillcrest.

What we learned from this game: Hillcrest is looking like last year.
Its 3-6 record is not impressive, and the Huskies won't be Riverton
next. The defense can't have an off night and expect to win.

Next: Hillcrest entertains Riverton Jan. 8. Bingham takes on rival Alta
at home Jan. 9.

Dec. 19 - Hillcrest 41, Northridge 37

Story of the game: Austin Jackson and Jeremy Ulrich scored key
points in the final minute to allow Hillcrest to hold off Northridge in a
non-region game and end a three-game losing streak.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies rallied from a one-point deficit
entering the final quarter. They outscored Northridge 16-11 in that
span. Jackson led Hillcrest with nine points.

Northridge's best moment: Tyce Bockwoldt had 12 points for the
Knights, who are 3-3.

Statistical leaders: Hillcrest held Northridge to single digits in every
quarter but one. Curtis Blackmore had seven points and Kyle
Maughan six.

What we learned from this game: This game was close all the way.
Hillcrest won the way it wanted to do it - a low-scoring, defensive
battle with all of its players involved. Eight players scored for the
Huskies.

Next: Hillcrest is off until Jan. 6, when it plays at Bingham. Northridge
has a home game against Bonneville Dec. 30.

Dec. 18 - Highland 55, Hillcrest 43

Story of the game: Taylor Brightwell had a season-high 19 points,
including five three-points baskets, as Highland did something it
hasn't done all season - with with offense - and beat Hillcrest.

Hillcrest's best moment: Kyle Maughan had 22 points for Hillcrest.
He kept the Huskies in the game in the first half. Hillcrest led 21-20 at
intermission. Curtis Blackmore added 10 points.

Highland's best moment: In a game between teams with two fine
defenses, Brightwell was the difference. The Rams outscored
Hillcrest 35-22 in the second half. Hillcrest couldn't keep up.

Statistical leaders: The teams shot about the same from the
free-throw line. Highland's 55 points was a season high. Spenser
Bowen scored 13 for Highland.

What we learned from this game: Hillcrest has lost three straight
games and, in their last four, the game's outcome has not been in
doubt. Unless something changes soon, this team won't reach the
postseason.

Next: Hillcrest takes on Northridge tonight (Dec. 19) at home.
Highland
travels to San Diego Dec. 26 to play in a tournament there.

Dec. 16 - Clearfield 36, Hillcrest 20

Story of the game: Jordan Hanson almost outscored Hillcrest by
himself, tallying 17 points to lead Clearfield past the Huskies in a
defensive-oriented game.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies scored just six points in the
first half, so it was probably after that when they played evenly with
Clearfield. Twenty points is embarrassing, but Clearfield is 5-0. Don't
know how embarrassing yet.

Clearfield's best moment: Holding a team to 20 points, including six
in the first half, is a feather in your cap. If the Falcons kept these kinds
of records, this might be listed. Clearfield led 20-6 at halftime.

Statistical notes: The game was tied 4-4 after one quarter, but the
Falcons blew it open. Hillcrest had just seven baskets, and two were
three-pointers by Jeremy Ulrich.

What we learned from this game: How do you score just 20 points in
a game? When I first saw this score, I thought it was a typo or a girls
game. Is Hillcrest a Jekyll & Hyde team?

Next: Hillcrest plays at Highland on Thursday (Dec. 18). Clearfield
has a home game against
Brighton the same night.

Dec. 12 - Copper Hills 57, Hillcrest 41

Story of the game: Steven Larson scored 19 points and Copper Hills
blew out Hillcrest in the first and third quarters en route to a
convincing home victory.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies played well in the second
quarter, and their offense came alive in the final period. Curtis
Blackmore led the way with 13 points. Kyle Maughan, the team's
leading scorer, had just seven.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies jumped out to a 16-5 lead.
Then, after Hillcrest rallied, they did it again with a big third period.
Copper Hills prevented a comeback by hitting 12-14 free throws down
the stretch.

Statistical notes: Myles Spencer backed up Larson with 11 points.
Kaden Anselmo added nine. Spencer was the Grizzlies' outside
shooting threat with three treys.

What we learned from this game: After an 8-day layoff, this was a
good win. Copper Hills played well, so all those practices seem to
have paid dividends.

Next: Hillcrest fell to 2-3 overall and goes to Clearfield next Tuesday
(Dec. 16).
Copper Hills travels to East the same night.

Dec. 5 - Hillcrest 55, Cottonwood 50

Story of the game: Kyle Maughan led the way with 18 points, but it
was a key event with 6:03 left that resulted in two ejections and six
consecutive free throw attempts by Hillcrest that paved the way for the
Huskies to capture this physical non-region game.

Hillcrest's best moment: Trailing 31-28, Cottonwood's Alo Moli and
Maughn got tangled up battling for a rebound, and a skirmish took
place. Moli, teammate Eric Pauni and a Cottonwood assistant coach
were tossed. Maughan made 1-2 FTs, and Jeremy Ulrich nailed four
straight. Hillcrest never trailed after that.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts are not particularly big, and
didn't want to play Hillcrest's slow style, so they extended their
defense full court, which resulted in 26 Husky turnovers. Raymond
Chavez had 13 points for Tyson Reynolds added 10. Zack Ziegler also
played well off the bench.

Statistical leaders: Cottonwood was whistled for 25 fouls and
Hillcrest hit 28-43 from the FT line. Hillcrest had a 31-24 rebounding
edge.

What we learned from this game: A good win for the Huskies. It
could have gone either way. Coach Brad Tingey might have saved a
pair of turnovers when he called timeout when Hillcrest was having
trouble getting the ball across midcourt against Cottonwood's press.

Next: Hillcrest travels to Copper Hills for a Dec. 12 game. Cottonwood
has another home game against
Skyline Dec. 9.

Dec. 3 - West Jordan 49, Hillcrest 35

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick and Reyes Gallegos almost
outscored Hillcrest by themselves, putting in 17 points apiece, as
West Jordan's defense proved to be better than the Huskies in the
non-region win.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies did something right in the third
quarter, when they frustrated West Jordan into only seven points and
cut the margin to six points. Hillcrest's defense is its strong point, but
wasn't enough to stay with West Jordan.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 26-18, but Hillcrest
bottled them up in the third quarter and narrowed the gap. West
Jordan broke lose in the final eight minutes, outscoring Hillcrest 16-8
and won the game going away.

Statistical leaders: Hillcrest likes to slow the game, play good
defense and limit possessions. Still, some scoring is required and
the Huskies need to be better in that area. Through three games,
they're averaging just 45.3.

What we learned from this game: Last year, Hillcrest played tough
defense and still finished 6-15. If this team is going to be more
successful, how will it be different? Better defense? More offense?
Last year's team averaged 42 ppg.

Next: Hillcrest travels to play neighborhood rival Cottonwood on Friday
(Dec. 5).
West Jordan plays at Pleasant Grove the same night.

Dec. 2 - Hillcrest 52, Judge Memorial 45

Story of the game: Curtis Blackmore scored 13 points and Kyle
Maughan added 12, but it was Hillcrest's defense and rebounding
ability that denied Judge coach Jim Yerkovich his 600th career win.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies' defense was at its best in the
fourth quarter. Judge shot 32 percent for the game, but just 17 percent
in the final period. Shooting like that, it's not possible to make much of
a comeback.

Judge's best moment: Stallon Saldivar led the way with 20 points and
Dee Crandall had nine. Crandall had a lot more in the Bulldogs' first
game, and needs to take the pressure off Saldivar. Judge scored 16
points in the fourth quarter, despite its shooting problems.

Statistical leaders: No three-point baskets for Hillcrest. Also, Judge
hit just 18-32 from the free-throw line. Austin Jackson, Maati Lao and
Jeremy Ulrich had six points apiece for the Huskies.

What we learned from this game: While the focus might been on
Yerkovich, it was Hillcrest's defense that shined. Hillcrest's basketball
history is not that impressive, but defense wins titles and will keep the
Huskies in games, so this win means something.

Next: Hillcrest hits the road for four straight games, starting tonight
(Dec. 3) at
West Jordan. Judge plays at Cyprus tonight, too.

Links: Both Salt Lake newspapers had reporters and photographers
at this game, probably hoping to catch Yerkovich winning his 600th.

Nov. 25 - Woods Cross 53, Hillcrest 49

Story of the game: Three-year starter Tyler Stahle scored 18 points,
leading three players in double figures, as Woods Cross rallied in the
third quarter to edge Hillcrest in the season opener for both teams.

Hillcrest's best moment: That was probably the first quarter when
Kyle Maughan led the way in helping Hillcrest build a 17-10 lead.
Maughan finished with a game-high 20 points.

Woods Cross' best moment: The Wildcats chipped away at the lead
in the second quarter and then their defense clamped down on
Hillcrest after halftime, holding them to just three points in the third
quarter. That was enough to build a four-point lead, which they held
on to at the end.

Statistical leaders: Bridger Dallimore backed up Maughan with eight
points, including a pair of three-pointers. Curtis Blackmore added six
points. The Huskies hit 14-21 free throws, compared to 20-27 for
Woods Cross.

What we learned from this game: A narrow loss, but a loss
nonetheless. Hillcrest started slowly last year and never really
recovered. With the schedule it plays, the Huskies have to win the
close ones.

Next: Hillcrest returns home to take on defending 3A champ Judge
Memorial on Dec. 2. Woods Cross travels to Viewmont on Dec. 3.
