Oct. 23 - American Fork 51, Hillcrest 35
Story of the game - RB Cade Zarbock rushed for 157 yards, and
American Fork returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, which was
enough for the Cavemen to hold off Hillcrest in a Region 4 game.
Hillcrest's best moment - Huskies' QB Tanner Kemp had a great
game, throwing for 300 yards and four touchdowns. Connor Phelps
had a great night punting, averaging over 50 yards per kick.
American Fork's best moment - Zarbock and Ethan Wright
answered Hillcrest touchdowns in the second quarter by returning
the ensuing kickoff for scores. That proved to be the difference in
the game.
What we learned from this game - This was a wild contest. The
teams combined for 39 points in the last three minutes of the
second quarter. The win was AF's first in region, and saddled the
Huskies into last place, but they went down fighting.
Next - The season is over for both teams.

Oct. 16 - Alta 49, Hillcrest 7
Story of the game - Boston Handley had another nice game,
throwing for two touchdowns and running for another, and Zack
Eyring anchored Alta's rushing attack, as the Hawks had no trouble
beating Hillcrest in a Region 4 game.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies were overmatched, and
knew that going into the game. They had just four first downs and
38 yards of offense. Bridger Dallimore scored the team's
touchdown.
Alta's best moment - This game was never in doubt. The Hawks
led 42-0 at halftime. This was probably Handley's last game as the
starter, as QB Jordan Brown is likely to return for next week's big
game at Pleasant Grove that will decide the Region 4 crown.
What we learned from this game - This was one of those "name
the score" type games. There was little chance of an upset, as
Hillcrest has been beaten up (injuries, etc...) to mount a threat. In
five region games, the Huskies have been outscored (on average)
by 50-8.
Next - Hillcrest ends its season at home against American Fork.
Alta travels to Pleasant Grove.

Oct. 9 - Kearns 14, Hillcrest 7
Story of the game - QB J.R. Finai had touchdown passes to
Sammy Sweat and Justin Brower, and the Kearns defense held
Hillcrest to just 114 yards total offense and claimed the non-region
win.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies scored first on a 12-yard
run by Trae Kranz, and played Kearns tough the entire game. Liam
Smith had 16 tackles, including two sacks, and forced two Kearns
fumbles.
Kearns' best moment - The Cougars didn't let Hillcrest score again
after the first quarter, and broke a two-game losing streak with their
second-best performance of the season. The offense also held on
the ball, allowed Hillcrest to just 36 plans, and seven first downs.
What we learned from this game - This was a non-region game,
but it would have been good for Hillcrest's confidence to earn a win.
The Huskies face two tough foes to end the season.
Next - Hillcrest travels to play Alta. Kearns plays host to Copper
Hills.

Sept. 30 - Brighton 49, Hillcrest 10
Story of the game - Sosake Takai ran for 162 yards and caught an
80-yard touchdown pass from QB Derek Newell as Brighton rallied
from an early deficit and blew past Hillcrest in a Region 4 game.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies got off to a fast start. QB
Tanner Kemp hit Matt Pecht on an 80-yard TD pass to get things
started, and Hillcrest added a 28-yard field goal by Jeff Brown.
Brighton's best moment - The Bengals trailed 10-0, and then
dominated the Huskies defensively. Brett Grant had a pair of pass
interceptions. Newell had a couple of short TD runs as Brighton led
28-10 at halftime.
What we learned from this game - The Huskies had the
momentum early, but then lost it and was dominated after that. They
couldn't run, and Kemp was only 6-23 passing with three
interceptions.
Next - Hillcrest has its homecoming game against Kearns.
Brighton plays host to Pleasant Grove.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune

Sept. 25 - Jordan 56, Hillcrest 3
Story of the game - Alex Hart threw six touchdown passes and
helped Jordan score almost at will in the first half as the
Beetdiggers routed Hillcrest in a Region 4 game.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies actually scored first on a
33-yard field goal by Jeff Brown. That was their only score of the
game. At least Hillcrest stopped the Diggers from scoring in the
fourth quarter.
Jordan's best moment - Hart was dominating, passing for 340
yards and he also ran for a score. Hart's favorite receiver was
Braden Hammond, who caught three touchdown passes.
What we learned from this game - This is not a good sign as
Hillcrest has been routed in its first three region games. Coach Kirk
Merhish knew the region would be difficult, but this is too much.
Next - Hillcrest takes on Brighton at home. Jordan travels to
Pleasant Grove.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Sept. 18 - Lone Peak 49, Hillcrest 9
Story of the game - QB Tannon Pedersen threw three touchdowns
and ran for another and Lone Peak took advantage of three pass
interceptions to bury Hillcrest in a Region 4 game.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies trailed 35-0 until Tanner
Kemp found Matt Augustyn open on a 28-yard touchdown pass.
Hillcrest's defense also recorded a safety.
Lone Peak's best moment - The Knights were able to move the
football, and averaged seven yards per carry every time they ran it.
The 35-point "mercy rule" kept the scoring from getting out of hand
in the second half.
What we learned from this game - Hillcrest was dominated again
by a fellow Region 4 team, and it's top tackler, Nick Merhish, was
injured and his future is uncertain.
Next - Hillcrest travels to play Jordan. Lone Peak must play at Alta.
Links - There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Sept. 11 - Pleasant Grove 48, Hillcrest 10
Story of the game - QB Dallas Lloyd threw four touchdown passes,
and led Pleasant Grove's offense to 556 yards total offense in an
easy Region 4 victory over Hillcrest.
Hillcrest's best moment - There wasn't much. The Huskies were
dominated and didn't score their touchdown until late in the game
Tanner Kemp hit Matt Pecht on a 35-yard scoring pass. Kemp was
9-33 passing.
Pleasant Grove's best moment - Lloyd had a great game, but he
had plenty of help on offense. Defensively, PG held Hillcrest to just
six first downs, and four of those came by penalty.
What we learned from this game - The outcome of this game was
never in doubt. Hillcrest never even tried to start a running game,
and Kemp was under pressure every time he tried to throw.
Next - Hillcrest returns home to play Lone Peak. Pleasant Grove
faces West Jordan in a non-region game.

Herald's story, click here. To see the Deseret News brief, click here.

Sept. 4 - Hillcrest 41, Lehi 0
Story of the game - QB Tanner Kemp threw for 307 yards and four
touchdown passes, and Nick Merhish intercepted a pass and
returned it for a score as Hillcrest whipped Lehi in a non-region
contest.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies started early, as Kemp hit
Bridger Dallimore on a 73-yard scoring pass to get the rout started.
Kemp and the Huskies had their best game of the season, both
offensively and defensively. Hillcrest intercepted four Lehi passes.
Lehi's best moment - Lehi QB Palmer Page threw short,
completing 16 of 34 passes for only 120 yards. The Pioneers had
just one first down in the opening half. By that time, Hillcrest owned
a 20-0 lead.
What we learned from this game - While the win was a good one,
it likely won't stand up because Lehi is having a down year and
Hillcrest has to face Region 4 foes from now on. Still, any win is a
good win and could build the Huskies' confidence.
Next - Hillcrest opens region play at Pleasant Grove. Lehi starts
Region 7 action at Timpanogos.

Aug. 28 - Hillcrest 27, Murray 21
Story of the game - QB Tanner Kemp threw for 247 yards and two
touchdowns as Hillcrest grabbed a big lead and held off rival Murray
in a non-region game.
Hillcrest's best moment - Danny Thompson had a huge night,
catching 11 passes for 127 yards, and intercepting a pair of passes
on defense, as the Huskies took a 21-7 halftime lead.
Murray's best moment - The Spartans made it interesting at the
end. QB Dee Hamala passed for 158 yards and ran for 61 more.
Murray rallied within 27-21 in the third period, but could not get any
closer.
What we learned from this game - The Huskies earned their first
win and, while it's over lowly Murray, it still counts as a win. This is a
rivalry game, so records don't matter. This is a quality win, and
should generate some confidence for the Huskies.
Next - Hillcrest travels to play Lehi. Murray will take on another rival,
Taylorsville, in a non-region game.
Links - There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Aug. 21 - Olympus 10, Hillcrest 7
Story of the game - Running back Terry Isaia rushed for 124 yards
and senior QB Spencer Harris had 99 more, but it was kicker
Stephen Hendriks and sophomore DB Cole Benson who won this
game for Olympus in the season opener on a hot August night.
Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies' defense played well at
times, stopping Oly on fourth down THREE times, including once
on a fake punt deep in Oly territory late in the game. Hillcrest's only
score came on a 61-yard TD pass from QB Tanner Kemp to WR
Danny Thompson.
Oly's best moment - In the first half, Harris was replaced by
sophomore QB Scott Porter, who looked good until he was hit by
Hillcrest's Nick Merhish and left for the game. Harris led Oly's
offense in the second half with several good runs and that allowed
the Titans to control the ball, running 32 plays to Hillcrest's 15.
What we learned from this game - This was a winnable game,
and there may not be that many of those this season. Bridger
Dallimore played well, but did not make the big play when he had
the opportunity. Danny Thompson and Nick Merhish had good
games, but it's obvious that Hillcrest will need its players to make
great plays in order to win games.
Next - Hillcrest travels to play Murray in another non-region game.
Olympus plays Skyline in the "Battle of Boot" contest at home.

I was there, too. To read the Deseret News article, click here. To
