Feb. 24 - Bingham 66, Hunter 48
Story of the game: Remington Peck scored 19 points and Ben
Clifford had 13 as Bingham raced to an early lead and held off
Hunter to clinch a share of the Region 3 title.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines rallied in the second
quarter, and cut the 15-point margin down to nine by halftime, but
couldn't get any closer. A.J. Pataialii was the leading scorer with 14
points, while Jeff Poole had 13.
Bingham's best moment: It was "Senior Night" at Bingham and the
Miners went after Hunter early, claiming a 21-6 lead after the first
quarter. Bingham was never threatened, and had its outside
shooting working as the team nailed seven three-pointers.
Statistical notes: Hunter was 10-12 from the free-throw line, while
Bingham was just 7-15. Ironically, the score was 33-24 at halftime
and Bingham outscored Hunter by the same amount in the second
half.
What we learned from this game: Hunter needed to win this game
to make the state tournament. Since Copper Hills lost, the
Wolverines would have won the tiebreaker.
Next: Hunter is done for the season. Bingham opens the 5A state
tourney March 1 against Northridge.

Feb. 20 - Copper Hills 57, Hunter 53
Story of the game: Senior center Steven Larson scored 15 points
and pulled down nine rebounds as Copper Hills held off Hunter in a
Region 3 game and put itself in good position to capture the fourth -
and last - 5A state tournament berth.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines didn't give up. Led by
sharpshooter Jeff Poole, who had a game-high 22 points, Hunter
had the Grizzlies' home crowd nervous during a 22-point fourth
quarter. Fernando Perez backed up Poole with 13 points, while A.J.
Pataialii had 12.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies led 17-9 after the first
quarter and extended the margin to 31-18 at halftime. Copper Hills
hit enough of its free throws to hold on to the win and avenge a
59-41 defeat to Hunter last month.
Statistical notes: Copper Hills was 15-26 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 13-22. Hunter's Magik Givens, who had 27 against
Kearns, was scoreless.
What we learned from this game: Hunter's only chance to reach
the postseason is if it beats Bingham and Copper Hills loses. If
they finish tied, a playoff game is likely.
Next: Hunter travels to Bingham on Feb. 24. Copper Hills plays at
Riverton the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune

Feb. 13 - Hunter 56, Kearns 46
Story of the game: Majik Givens scored a season-high 27 points
as Hunter rallied to beat Kearns and move into a tie for fourth place
in the Region 3 standings.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines trailed 10-6 after the first
quarter, but rallied to take a six-point halftime lead, and they
extended it from there. Givens had the hot hand, and was the only
Hunter player in double figures.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars bottled up Hunter's top scorer,
Jeff Poole, and stayed close throughout. Fatu Moala had 12 points
and Justyn Searle had 11 as Kearns had its best offensive output in
two months.
Statistical notes: Hunter hit 13-17 free throws; Kearns was just
6-13. The loss clinched Kearns' spot in the region cellar.
What we learned from this game: The win set up next week's
game at Copper Hills that will likely decide who gets the fourth - and
last - state tournament bid from Region 3.
Next: Hunter plays at Copper Hills Feb. 20. Kearns takes on
Riverton at home the same night.

Feb. 10 - Riverton 58, Hunter 45
Story of the game: Scott Friel took over, scoring a season-high 27
points as Riverton rallied to beat Hunter in a Region 2 game.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines were looking for an upset,
and put a scare into the favored Silverwolves. Fernando Perez led
Hunter with 12 points, while Jeff Poole had 11.
Riverton's best moment: After losing two of three and trailing after
one quarter, Friel got the Silverwolves going. They led 27-24 at
halftime, and then slowly pulled away to earn the 13-point win.
Statistical notes: Riverton was 11-14 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 9-16. Garrett Gundestrup had 13 points, including two
three-pointers. Riverton won the season series, but neither game
was easy.
What we learned from this game: Riverton clinched a 5A
tournament berth with the win, and now must play out the season to
determine its seeding.
Next: Hunter takes on Kearns at home on Feb. 13. Riverton goes to
West Jordan the same night.

Feb. 6 - West Jordan 81, Hunter 67
Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 28 points as West
Jordan outshot Hunter and downed the Wolverines a Region 3
contest that moved the Jaguars back into a tie for second place.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines have been turning up their
scoring potential lately. They stayed right with West Jordan and
always threatened to rally. Jeff Poole led four players in double
figures with 22 points.
West Jordan's best moment: West Jordan led 40-36 at halftime
between these two offensive juggernauts, but came out in the third
period and took a commanding advantage. Gallegos had a lot of
help as Mason Sawyer had 15 points, Jordan Weirick 14 and Tyson
Udy 11.
Statistical notes: A.J. Pataialii had 14 points for Hunter, while Majik
Givens had 13 and Kevin Williams 12. Both teams shot well from
the free-throw line; West Jordan was 19-22 and Hunter perfect at
13-13. West Jordan's 81 points was a season high.
What we learned from this game: This was Hunter's chance to pull
off a second straight upset, but it didn't happen. The Wolverines still
have a chance to reach the post-season, but must at least beat
Copper Hills Feb. 20 and hope the Grizzlies don't upset anyone.
Next: Hunter goes to Riverton on Feb. 10. West Jordan plays host to
Copper Hills the same night.

Jan. 30 - Hunter 59, Copper Hills 41
Story of the game: Jeff Poole scored 22 points and A.J. Pataialii
added 12 as Hunter surprised Copper Hills in a Region 3 game.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines never trailed. Hunter led
21-15 at halftime and just added to it in the second half. Poole was
the big outside threat with four three-pointers.
Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies didn't come ready to play.
They were outscored 38-26 in the second half, so never did rally.
Statistical notes: Copper Hills' leading scorer, Preston Stelter, had
just two points. Myles Spencer had 12 points to lead the Grizzlies.
Copper Hills hit just 9-21 free throws. Kevin Williams chipped in
nine points for Hunter.
What we learned from this game: BIG win for Hunter. This is
exactly what the Wolverines needed. They're now tied with Copper
Hills and have a chance to get that last 5A state tournament berth.
Next: Hunter plays host to West Jordan Feb. 6. Copper Hills has
Kearns at home the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune

Jan. 27 - Bingham 65, Hunter 49
Story of the game: Ben Clifford and Remington Peck scored 18
points apiece as Bingham pulled away from Hunter in the third
quarter to earn the Region 3 victory.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines have yet to defeat a team
ahead of them in the standings, and let this one get away early.
They trailed 13-6 at the end of the first quarter. Jeff Poole tried to
lead a fourth-quarter rally, but to no avail. Poole finished with 26
points.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners led the entire game, and had
a 28-20 advantage at halftime. They outscored Hunter 20-10 in the
third quarter and then hit enough of their free throws late to
withstand the Wolverines' rally. Ty Hannay added 10 points for
Bingham.
Statistical notes: Bingham hit 17-25 free throws (68%), while
Hunter was 9-13 (69%). None of Poole's teammates scored more
than five points. A.J. Pataialii was held to just two. Hannay and Peck
had a pair of three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: This could have been a good
place for an upset, with Bingham playing West Jordan next. Hunter
needs at least one upset to reach the post-season, and now is the
time.
Next: Hunter has Copper Hills at home on Jan. 30. Bingham plays
at West Jordan the same night.

Jan. 23 - Hunter 46, Kearns 41
Story of the game: Jace Broadbent scored 11 points and A.J.
Patailii had nine as Hunter broke the game open in the third quarter
and then hung to beat Kearns in a Region 3 game.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines led 17-15 at halftime, but
then busted loose with a 16-8 run to take a 10-point lead. Hunter hit
enough free throws at the end to hold on to the win. Kevin Williams
added eight points.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars outscored Hunter 18-13 in the
final quarter, but it wasn't enough. Justyn Searle had 11 points to
lead the team in scoring.
Statistical notes: Hunter was 10-17 from the free throw line;
Kearns was 8-16. Both teams had a pair of three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: This was Hunter's first win in
Region 3 play, and it was a difficult victory. Hunter needs to pull off a
couple of upsets in order to make post-season play.
Next: Hunter takes on Bingham at home Jan. 27. Kearns goes to
West Jordan the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune

Jan. 20 - Riverton 60, Hunter 52
Story of the game: Garrett Gundestrup had another big game,
leading Riverton with 15 points, and the Silverwolves hit their free
throws late to hold off Hunter in a Region 3 game.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines stayed with Riverton most
of the way. Jeff Poole was the top scorer with 24 points, including a
pair of three-pointers. A.J. Patailii had 11 for Hunter.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led the entire game, and
just slowly extended it throughout. Riverton hit 23-28 free throws.
Ryan Thomas added 11 points and Sean Neilson 10.
Statistical notes: Riverton's top scorer, Scott Friel, had just seven
points. Hunter was 18-20 from the line. Gunderstrup's 15 points
was a season high.
What we learned from this game: The loss was Hunter's fourth
straight, but the Wolverines showed their isn't much difference
between them and Riverton.
Next: Hunter goes to Kearns on Jan. 23. Riverton returns home to
take on West Jordan.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 16 - West Jordan 67, Hunter 43
Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 19 points - all in the first
half - as West Jordan built a big lead and roared to an easy win in
each team's Region 3 opener.
Hunter's best moment: The Lancers stayed with West Jordan in
the second half, when the game was already decided. A.J. Patailii
led Hunter with 15 points, while Jeff Poole had 14.
West Jordan's best moment: Coming off a loss to Jordan, the
Jaguars didn't give Hunter a chance. They scored 26 points in the
first quarter and led 41-19 at halftime.
Statistical notes: Gallegos had five three-pointers for the Jags.
Poole had a pair of Hunter. West Jordan hit 13-24 free throws;
Hunter was 3-6. In Hunter's last two games, its offense has scored
season lows.
What we learned from this game: The Jags are back on the
winning track and won this game by taking Hunter out of its game
plan.
Next: Hunter takes on Riverton at home on Jan. 20. West Jordan
plays at Copper Hills the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. There was no report in the Salt
Lake Tribune.
Jan. 9 - Skyline 57, Hunter 41
Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh scored 20 points as Skyline finally
pulled away in the fourth quarter and downed Hunter on a special
night that featured the retirement of former player Danny Vranes'
uniform number.
Hunter's best moment: This was a good game, and Hunter
probably surprised a lot of people by sticking close. Jeff Poole had a
game-high 23 points.
Skyline's best moment: The hometown crowd was worried
entering the final quarter. The Eagles led just 38-35 before
outscoring Hunter 19-6. Kevin Wagstaff and Davey Weixler added
10 points apiece.
Statistical notes: Skyline was able to expand the lead late by hitting
18-23 free throws, a lot of them in the final quarter. Osterloh and
Wagstaff had a couple of three-pointers each for Skyline.
What we learned from this game: Hunter's five-game win streak is
now ancient history, thanks to two consecutive losses. On the other
hand, the last two games have been against very good teams.
Next: Hunter opens Region 3 play at West Jordan Jan. 16. Skyline
goes to Bingham Jan. 13.

Hunter's fourth-quarter rally that put the Wolverines within two points
near the end. Brett Lunceford had 16 points for Hunter.
Bear River's best moment: The Bears led most of the way,
including a 39-32 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Wade
Bronson had 13 points for Bear River, and Matt Weyland 12.
Statistical notes: Bear River was 21-30 from the free-throw line,
while Hunter was 17-22. That may be the best shooting of any Utah
high school game this season. Poole had three treys for Hunter,
which were the only ones during the game.
What we learned from this game: This was a tough loss for
Hunter, and ended the Wolverines' five-game win streak. The next
three games will be difficult.
Next: Hunter travels to Skyline on Jan. 9. Bear River opens Region
11 play at home against Ben Lomond the same day.

apiece as Hunter held off Pine View and won both games of its
Southern Utah road trip.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines outscored Pine View 17-10
in the second quarter to build their lead. They also connected on 15
of 18 free throws, some of those near the end of the game, to turn
back the Panthers' rally attempt.
Pine View's best moment: Trailing 35-27 at halftime, the Panthers
rallied to within four points by the end of the third quarter, but
couldn't get closer. Neilson led Pine View with 17 points.
Statistical notes: Broadbent's 19 points was a season high. Hunter
has now won five straight games.
What we learned from this game: Hunter won both games on this
road trip, and got its scoring from different people in each game.
That's the sign of a good team.
Next: Hunter returns home to play Bear River Jan. 6. Pine View
takes on Canyon View at home Jan. 7.

Jan. 2 - Hunter 48, Snow Canyon 39
Story of the game: Kevin Williams and A.J. Patailii scored 15 points
apiece as Hunter rallied with a huge fourth quarter to beat Snow
Canyon in a non-region game.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines led 17-7 after the first
quarter, but gave it away in the second period. Snow Canyon took
the lead until Hunter went on a 21-6 run in the final quarter. Jeff
Poole added 13 points.
Snow Canyon's best moment: The Warriors got back into the game
by holding Hunter to just two points in the second quarter. Clark
Anderson had 11 points for Snow Canyon.
Statistical notes: During the middle two quarters, Snow Canyon
outscored Hunter 26-10. Both teams shot just over 50 percent from
the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: This was a good way to start this
two-day road trip. Hunter has now won four straight games.
Next: Hunter will play at Pine View today (Jan. 3). Snow Canyon
takes on Delta at the same time.

Dec. 23 - Hunter 65, Morgan 57
Story of the game: Jeff Poole scored 32 points as Hunter rallied for
a small deficit to beat Morgan in a non-region game.
Hunter's best moment: The game was close all the way, but
Hunter trailed 43-41 going into the final quarter. A.J. Patailii added
17 for the Wolverines, who won their third straight game.
Morgan's best moment: The Trojans were on the verge of an
upset, if you call a 3A beating a 5A club an upset. Braden Saunders
had 16 points for Morgan, and Chase Markham added 13.
Statistical notes: Hunter shot twice as many free throws as the
visitors (20-31 vs. 11-15). Hunter outscored Morgan 24-14 in the
final quarter.
What we learned from this game: Three straight wins has to be
great for Hunter's momentum. The Wolverines have a big road trip
next, but the season certainly looks better now th an it did a few
weeks ago.
Next: Hunter takes a Southern Utah road trip - to Snow Canyon Jan.
2. Morgan goes to Sky View Dec. 30.

Dec. 17 - Hunter 49, Wasatch 45
Story of the game: A.J. Patailii scored 14 points and Jeff Poole had
11 as Hunter rallied from a big first-half deficit to beat Wasatch in a
non-region game.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines' outside shooting was not
there on this night, so Hunter went inside to score. Hunter wasn't
getting any officials' calls either, but still managed to win.
Wasatch's best moment: The Wasps had a big second quarter
that gave them a 26-19 edge at halftime. Trevor Bamgartner was
Wasatch's top scorer with 16 points.
Statistical notes: Wasatch was 17-21 from the free-throw line,
compared to 6-9 for Hunter. This was Wasatch's third straight loss.
A surprise since it started the season with four victories.
What we learned from this game: Hunter's second straight win.
The Wolverines have their preseason schedule filled with 4A and
3A schools. That might help their record, but will it help them
prepare for the region season?
Next: Hunter returns home to play Morgan next Tuesday (Dec. 23).
Wasatch travels to St. George to play in a two-day tourney there
beginning Friday (Dec. 19).

Dec. 12 - Hunter 69, Taylorsville 66
Story of the game: Jeff Poole became a player to watch, scoring 42
points to lift Hunter to its first win of the season over previously
unbeaten Taylorsville.
Hunter's best moment: This was a night to remember. The
Wolverines rallied from seven points down to send it to overtime.
Then they outscored Taylorsville 16-13 in the extra session.
Taylorsville had no answer for Poole.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors weren't supposed to
lose this game. Jordan Edgington scored 26 points. They were up
28-19 at halftime and seemingly headed to victory.
Statistical leaders: Poole had eight treys and his 42-point effort
has to be one of the best in the state this year. In four games, he is
averaging 26.7 points per game. A.J. Patailii added 10.
What we learned from this game: This was Hunter's first win and it
will be interesting to see if Poole can lead them to more victories, of
if another player gives him some support.
Next: Hunter travels to play Wasatch Wednesday (Dec. 17).
Taylorsville plays at Murray the day before.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Dec. 5 - Murray 84, Hunter 78
Story of the game: Ken Masic scored 32 points and Murray built a
huge lead and then watched as Hunter put on a fantastic
comeback, before falling just short.
Hunter's best moment: Trailing 57-29 at halftime, the Wolverines
didn't give up. Jeff Poole lit it up, scoring 38 points as Hunter came
within four points near the end. A.J. Patailii added 19 points for
Hunter.
West's best moment: The Spartans put on a show in the opening
half. Masic and Markus Duran led the way as Murray scored 32
points in the second quarter alone.
Statistical leaders: Murray hit 14-19 free throws, including several
at the end that allowed the Spartans to hang on to the win.
What we learned from this game: This was two separate games.
Duran and Masic had three treys. If Murray has any hopes of
winning games, it needs someone to back up Duran and the
Spartans got it here.
Next: Hunter will play its first home game Dec. 12 against unbeaten
Taylorsville. Murray will take on Jordan Dec. 9.

Story of the game: Chris Barnes started where he left off last
season, scoring 19 points (including two three-point baskets) to lift
West to convincing season-opening win over Hunter in a
non-region home game.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines stayed in the game.
Helped by A.J. Pataialii's 19 points, Hunter matched West's point
total for most of the second half. Hunter fell to 0-2 with the loss.
West's best moment: The Panthers took command from the start.
Helped by Barnes and sophomore point guard Tyrell Corbin, who
had 11 points, West claimed a 20-16 lead after one quarter and
extended it to 33-24 by halftime.
Statistical leaders: West had a big advantage from the free-throw
line, hitting 19-28 charity shots, compared to 5-9 for Hunter. Ricardo
Saldana had 12 points for West. Jeff Poole added 14 for Hunter.
What we learned from this game: This was a good win for West.
The Panthers did not appear rusty in their opener, and that bodes
well for them as they prepare for Region 6 action.
Next: West has another home game Friday against Woods Cross.
Hunter hits the road again to play at Murray the same night.

Nov. 25 - Box Elder 70, Hunter 50
Story of the game: Box Elder's Brant Mecham was on fire, scoring
the nets for 24 points (including six three-point baskets) as the
Bees broke away in the second quarter and never looked back.
Hunter's best moment: It had to be the first quarter, when Hunter
started strong and had a 16-12 lead at the end of eight minutes.
Box Elder's best moment: The Bees dominated the second and
third quarters. Maybe it took a quarter for them to get going, but Box
Elder outscored Hunter 23-5 in the second period and 21-8 in the
third. By then, they had a 56-29 advantage.
Statistical leaders: Jeff Poole led Hunter with 13 points. Ekuasi
Tavo hit the Wolverines' only three-pointer. Mecham was the only
Box Elder player in double figures. The Bees hit 19-22 from the
free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: Mecham will be a player to
watch this year. Hunter starts the season with three straight road
games, and all against tough teams.
Next: Hunter travels to West for another non-region road game.
