Oct. 31 - Layton 24, Hunter 7
Story of the game - RB Lavaughn Jackson ran for 108 yards and
the Lancers' defense sacked Hunter QB Brett Lunceford seven
times en route to a tough 5-A playoff win.
Hunter's best moment - Hunter used a clever trick play to set up its
only touchdown. Lunceford hit Rico Montoya with a lateral pass, and
Montoya found a wide-open Robert Atiga for a 72-yard gain down to
the Layton 9-yard line. Equasi Tavo's 3-yard touchdown plunge got
Hunter on the board.
Layton's best moment - After Hunter scored, Layton's defense iced
the game when Shea Kopecky recovered a fumble and returned it
31 yards for a score.
What was learned from the game - Hunter played tough in almost
every game, but its offense simply does not have enough firepower
to stay with the better teams.
Next week - Hunter is done for the season. Layton advances to play
Skyline at home next week.

Oct. 23 - Riverton 27, Hunter 7
Story of the game - Dillon Draper, Daniel Hoffman, Zach Spencer
and Paydon Newman combined for almost 300 yards rushing as
Riverton beat Hunter for the first time ever in both team's final
regular-season game.
Hunter's best moment - Hunter scored first. The Wolverines' Chris
Hunter returned the opening kickoff 50 yards and that led to Brett
Lunceford's 20-yard TD pass to Hunter for a 7-0 lead.
Riverton's best moment - Draper tied the game with a 35-yard run,
and then Hoffman added a short TD run with a Michael Allem field
goal to give the Silverwolves a 17-7 halftime lead. Riverton's
defense dominated. The win helped erase a 23-0 loss to Hunter
last year when both schools were in about the same situation.
What was learned from the game - Despite the loss, Hunter keeps
the No. 4 seed because Kearns beat West Jordan. Riverton has the
No. 2 seed. Both have spots in the 5-A playoffs.
Next week - Hunter travels to play Region 1's top team - Layton.
Riverton plays host to Davis.

Oct. 15 - Bingham 41, Hunter 7
Story of the game - QB Jake Soffe passed for 218 yards and three
TDs and - once again - the Miners offensive and defensive lines
dominated in their easy win over Hunter that clinched the Region 2
title for Bingham.
Hunter's best moment - Trailing 34-0, QB Brett Lunceford
connected with Fine Feinga for the Wolverines' only touchdown. The
momentum was quickly dashed when Bingham returned the
ensuing kickoff for a score.
Bingham's best moment - The Miners led 24-0 at halftime. The
defense stifled Hunter until the final minutes of the second quarter,
when the Wolverines moved down the field were stopped on a pass
interception by Braden Anderson.
What was learned from the game - Hunter needs to beat Riverton
next week or it will be stuck with the No. 4 seed in Region 2. That
means the Wolverines would play a top team on the road.
Next week - Hunter returns home to take on Riverton. Bingham
plays at Copper Hills.

Oct. 10 - Hunter 20, West Jordan 0
Story of the game - Running backs Equasi Tavo rushed for 85
yards and Mone Moungaloa had 83 as Hunter took advantage of six
West Jordan turnovers and beat the Jags on their home field,
ruining the home team's homecoming.

Hunter's best moment - Tavo scored on a 55-yard run in the second
quarter to give the Wolverines a 13-0 lead. Rico Montoya then put the
game away in the third quarter when he returned an interception
40 yards for a touchdown.
West Jordan's' best moment - The Jags were still in the game in the
second quarter. Led by RB Damien Maestes, who rushed for 151
yards on 27 carries, they moved the ball downfield but the drive
ended with a turnover.
What was learned from the game - Hunter wins with its defense, and
is peaking now, which is good because the two best teams in the
region are approaching. This was a big win, though, in hostile territory.
Next week - Hunter plays at Bingham. West Jordan travels to
Copper Hills.

Oct. 3 - Hunter 20, Copper Hills 14
Story of the game - Hunter's Rico Montoya picked up a fumble and returned it 9 yards for a touchdown and that made the difference in
the Wolverines narrow win over Copper Hills in a Region 3 game.
Hunter's best moment - Trailing 7-6, the Wolverines kicked off to start the third quarter. Copper Hills tried a reverse and fumbled, and
Montoya picked it up and scored. It gave Hunter the momentum, and QB Brett Lunceford added a TD to put the game out of reach.
Copper Hills' best moment - The Grizzlies' offense struggled all night. Trailing 20-7, QB Josh Soter completed 5 of 6 passes for 61
yards, and finished it with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Chris Martinez. Copper Hills had another drive end at Hunter's 14 yard line.
What was learned from the game - A big win for Hunter - its first in region play. When Hunter wins, its defense is the reason. The
toughest part of the schedule begins next week.
Next week - Hunter travels to West Jordan. Copper Hills travels to Kearns.

Sept. 25 - Kearns 21, Hunter 12
Story of the game - Sophomore QB J.R. Finai grew up, throwing for 121 yards, including a 40-yard TD pass to Dominick Cagle in the
fourth quarter to lift the Cougars past Hunter in their Region 3 opener.
Hunter's best moment - The Wolverines' defense kept them in the game. The offense had just 26 second-half yards, but still had a
chance to win. Hunter's defense had two interceptions, and Finai's final TD pass was a fourth-down play. Coach Pearce said the
defense "played outstanding."
Kearns' best moment - RB Alamoti Vaenuku rushed for 129 yards on 17 carries, including an 80-yard TD run. Hunter stacked the line
trying to stop the run and dared Finai to try to win it. Assistant coach Justin Spencer said Finai "grew up." Coach Bill Cosper called the
last pass "a beaut."
What was learned from the game - Games between these two rivals are usually decided in the trenches and are usually close. This
game was the biggest scoring total (21 points) for Kearns this year. Hunter needs to find an offensive playmaker.
Next week - Hunter returns home to play Copper Hills in its homecoming game. Kearns travels to Bingham.

Sept. 19 - Hunter 41, Spanish Fork 13
Story of the game - Rico Montoya caught a 52-yard TD pass and had an interception return for another score as Hunter celebrated the
renaming of its football stadium with a surprising non-region victory over Spanish Fork.
Hunter's best moment - The Hunter defense was awesome, holding Spanish Fork's offense and claiming a 21-0 halftime lead. The
Wolverines then scored first in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. It was - by far - the best the team has played this season.
Spanish Fork's best moment - Trailing 28-0 in the third quarter, QB Breck Lewis engineered a couple of touchdown drives. Lewis hit
Jordunn Mattinson on a short TD pass and then connected with Richard Wilson on a 21-yard score. But it was not enough.
What we learned from this game - Hunter was revitalized. The offense scored almost as many points in this one game than it had all
season. This was a game the Wolverines needed to win and it catapuled them toward the Region 3 season.
Next: Hunter plays at Kearns. Spanish Fork goes to American Fork.

Sept. 12 - Alta 21, Hunter 0
Story of the game - You can talk about Ammon Olsen and Alta's offense all you want, but the Hawks' success is due to their defense.
Alta recorded its second straight shutout and Olsen put together enough offense to give the Hawks a tough road victory.
Hunter's best moment - The Wolverines' defense limited Alta to just 11 snaps in the second half. That's amazing. There's no doubt
Hunter put a scare into the Hawks, intercepting a pass on Alta's third snap (in the first quarter) and then driving the field in the third
quarter (before Zack Bigelow's 97-yard interception return ruined it).
Alta's best moment - After throwing an interception on the opening drive, the Hawks settled down and Olsen led them on two
time-consuming TD drives. Hunter's offense wasn't going anywhere, so Alta's 14-0 halftime lead seemed insurmountable. Bigelow's
INT return in the third quarter was the dagger.
What we learned from this game - Alta's about defense, and defense wins championships. That's why Alta is ranked No. 1. The Hawks
will get a great test next week at Grant, Calif. For Hunter, its problem is offense and its tough schedule. But, hey, that got them ready for a
playoff berth last year.
Next: Hunter starts homecoming week by playing host to Spanish Fork in its last non-region game. Alta goes to Sacramento, Calif. to
take on Grant.

Sept. 5 - Hunter 27, Brighton 14
Story of the game - The Hunter defense intercepted Brighton passes on four consecutive possessions and that lifted the Wolverines to
their first win - 27-14 over the Bengals, who remained winless.
Hunter's best moment - The Wolverines tied the game in the third quarter, then scored 20 points in the final frame - that's more than
they scored in the first two games combined. Senior tailback Mone Maungoloa had two of Hunter's touchdowns. Rustin Tautioli and
Equasi Tavo also had TDs.
Brighton's best moment - Information is limited about this game, but the Bengals jumped to a 7-0 lead and held it through the first half.
The Bengals have been trying to improve their offense through their passing game, but too many turnovers doomed their progress.
What was learned from the game - Hunter's defense set up the offense, and perhaps the momentum from this win will lead to others,
although it's not likely with Alta coming in next week. The Wolverines' physical defense is its strong point so far.
Next week - Hunter entertains Alta in a non-region game. Brighton will play Spanish Fork in its homecoming game.

Aug. 29 - Timpanogos 22, Hunter 16
Story of the game - Parker Brown ran for one TD, passed for another and kicked three field goals to lead Timpanogos to a tough victory
over Hunter in a non-region game. Brown had replaced the injured Brooks Fowler at QB. Hunter fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Hunter's best moment - Trailing 10-3, Equasi Tavo faked a punt and ran 60 yards for a touchdown that tied the game. It was the
Wolverines' biggest play of the year, and their only TD of the game. Dallon Lund had three field goals for Hunter.
Timpanogos' best moment - Brown kicked a 44-yard field goal to tie the game 16-16. Then he ran 7 yards for the winning score a little
while later.
What was learned from the game - Hunter is 0-2, just like it was at this time last year. However, the Wolverines understand that, in this
case, the non-region games are to get ready for the Region 3 season. The good news is that at least the team scored in Game 2 and
almost won the game.
Next week - Hunter goes on the road again to play at winless Brighton. Timpanogos has another home game - against Orem.

Aug. 22 - Davis 27, Hunter 0
Story of the game - Sophomore QB Gavin Fowler passed for one touchdown and ran for another in his first start as Davis rolled past
Hunter. Davis took the opening drive and scored, and was never headed. The loss ruined new coach Dustin Pearce's debut at Hunter.
Hunter's best moment - Not much went right for Hunter. The Wolverines did move the ball near the end of the game, but were stopped
at the 2-yard line.
Davis' best moment - Fowler erased any doubts his teammates would have on the opening drive, when he led the Darts on a long,
time-consuming possession that culminated in the team's first score. Davis, in fact, scored on its first four possessions.
What was learned from the game - Davis is likely going to be pretty good, even with a sophomore QB. Hunter still has a lot of
questions. This game didn't answer anything, but brought about more questions. Hunter still needs to score its first TD.
Next week - Hunter goes on the road to play at Timpanogos. Davis will have its first home contest against Brighton.
