Feb. 17 - Bingham 73, Hunter 31

Story of the game: Taeja Afalava led a balanced scoring attack
with 11 points and eight rebounds as Bingham buried Hunter in
the both team's regular-season finale.

Hunter's best moment: This was never a winnable game for the
Wolverines, even on "Senior Night," their last home game. Iosua
was Hunter's top scorer with 11 points.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners dominated every region
team, except Riverton. They ran to a big lead, and filled the game
with a mix of players, like they had all season. Bingham led 17-7
after one quarter and outscored Hunter 25-7 in the third period.

Statistical notes: Bingham was 17-23 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 11-24. Bingham had 14 players score. Innie Pataialii
had two three-pointers for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: The season is over for Hunter,
and the Wolverines finished fifth in the six-team region. The
Wolverines played their region foes tough, except for Riverton and
Bingham.

Next: Hunter is done for the year. Bingham opens the 5A state
tournament Feb. 23 against Layton.

Feb. 12 - Hunter 38, Kearns 36

Story of the game: Innie Patailii scored 12 points as Hunter rallied
with a big fourth quarter to beat Kearns and escape the Region 3
cellar.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines led 12-8 at halftime, but
fell apart in the third quarter. They came back in the final period and
scored 22 points to post their second region victory.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars outscored Hunter 14-4 in the
third period to take a six-point lead, but they couldn't hold on.

Statistical notes: Kearns was 13-21 from the free-throw line.
Hunter was 6-11. Patailii had two three-pointers for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: After a nine-game losing streak,
Hunter has won two of four. They're still out of the post-season
race, though.

Next: Hunter finishes the season at home against Bingham Feb.
17.
Kearns goes to West Jordan the same night.

Feb. 10 - Riverton 62, Hunter 16

Story of the game: Dani Lockhart scored 18 points and Riverton
got off to a big lead by holding Hunter scoreless in the first quarter
en route to another easy Region 3 win.

Hunter's best moment: There was none. This game was over
early, but at least it wasn't as bad as the 58-9 loss to Riverton last
time.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 15-0 after one
quarter and extended it to 40-9 by halftime. Shelby Ostler and
Chelsea Sorensen added 10 points apiece.

Statistical notes: Riverton had three treys, led by Ostler with two.
Utu Bloomfield hit a three-pointer for Hunter. Riverton was 14-25
from the free-throw line; Hunter was 3-4.

What we learned from this game: The loss ended any hopes of
post-season for Hunter, who trail West Jordan by two games. The
Jaguars own the tiebreaker.

Next: Hunter goes to Kearns on Feb. 12. Riverton plays host to
West Jordan the same night.

Feb. 5 - West Jordan 42, Hunter 35

Story of the game: Gabriella Rodriguez scored 12 points as West
Jordan got off to a nice lead early and held on to it en route to the
Region 3 win.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines held West Jordan to three
points in the final quarter, but couldn't muster enough offense
themselves. Iosua had 12 points and Utu Bloomfield nine.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 15-6 after the first
period, and extended it slightly to 25-15 at halftime. West Jordan
turned back all of Hunter's rallies. Marina Leuluai added seven
points.

Statistical notes: Rodriguez had a pair of three-pointers for West
Jordan. The Jags were 12-14 from the free-throw line; Hunter was
6-10.

What we learned from this game: This loss likely eliminated
Hunter as it dropped the Wolverines another game behind West
Jordan, and the Jags now own the tiebreaker.

Next: Hunter has Riverton at home Feb. 10. West Jordan goes to
Copper Hills the same night.

Jan. 29 - Hunter 44, Copper Hills 43

Story of the game: Innie Pataialii scored 11 points, but it was
Latiesha Webster's three-pointer with one second left that forced
overtime and allowed Hunter to overcome Copper Hills and earn
its first Region 3 victory.

Hunter's best moment: The game was close throughout.
Webster's shot gave Hunter momentum going into overtime, and
T.J. Bloomfield hit her only basket - also a three-pointer - that
ended up making the difference.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies seemingly had this
game won until Webster's shot. Marissa Lazenby led Copper Hills
with 13 points, while Brittany Hackworth had 10.

Statistical notes: Hackworth had two three-pointers for Copper
Hills. The Grizzlies were 12-20 from the free-throw line, while
Hunter was just 6-14. The score was 40-40 at the end of regulation.

What we learned from this game: Hunter earned its first region
win, and now the two teams are tied for last place. It also kept West
Jordan in the fourth place spot.

Next: Hunter plays at West Jordan Feb. 5. Copper Hills is at
Kearns the same night.

Jan. 27 - Bingham 79, Hunter 32

Story of the game: Rachel Gines led a balanced scoring attack
with 10 points as Bingham blasted Hunter and emptied its bench
in the process. Eighteen different players scored for Bingham in
this Region 3 game.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines battled the best they could,
but the difference in these programs is just too much. Iosua was
Hunter's top scorer with 10 points.

Bingham's best moment: The outcome of this game was never in
doubt. Bingham led 20-9 after the first quarter and 46-19 at
halftime. This had to be a record for most players on the bench at
one time.

Statistical notes: Bingham was 19-27 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was just 1-4. Utu Bloomfield had nine points for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: There are a couple of teams in
Region 3 that just can't compete with Bingham and Riverton, and
the obvious happens. At least coach Rasmussen emptied his
bench and even found JV players

Next: Hunter goes to Copper Hills on Jan. 29. Bingham plays host
to
West Jordan the same night.

Jan. 22 - Kearns 56, Hunter 32

Story of the game: Brooke Larsen had another big game, pouring
in 23 points as Kearns pulled away from Hunter in the second
quarter and improved its Region 3 record to 2-2.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines stayed within 11-10 after
the first quarter, but kept falling further behind after that. Andrea
Hammond had 10 points.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars' defense held Hunter to four
points in the second quarter, and that's when they made their
move. Micalee Orton had 11 points and nine players reached the
scoring column.

Statistical notes: Hunter tried to rally by shooting from outside,
where it hit five three-pointers. Kearns was 15-25 from the
free-throw line; Hunter was 3-7. Latiesha Webster had seven
points for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: It seems apparent now that
Hunter and Copper Hills are at the bottom of the league, and now
have to hope to play a spoiler role.

Next: Hunter travels to play Bingham Jan. 27. Kearns takes on
West Jordan at home the same night.

Jan. 20 - Riverton 58, Hunter 9

Story of the game: Shelby Ostler scored 15 points and Chelsea
Sorensen had 13, but it was Riverton's defense that dominated
Hunter and held the Wolverines to a season low point total.

Hunter's best moment: Conversely, this was the Wolverines' worst
loss. Hunter was never in the game. It might have been interesting
to hear coach Ballard's post-game talk afterward.

Riverton's best moment: Riverton led 19-0 after the first quarter
and it was 38-3 at halftime. This was the Silverwolves most
dominating victory of the season.

Statistical notes: Hunter made three field goals and was 3-8 from
the free-throw line. Ostler had three treys for Riverton, whose
previous best defensive effort was 23 points given up to Weber.

What we learned from this game: There is a huge discrepancy
between Riverton and the rest of the region, and Hunter is at the
bottom.

Next: Hunter will try to rebound with a home game against Kearns
on Jan. 22.
Riverton goes to West Jordan the same night.

Jan. 15 - West Jordan 52, Hunter 31

Story of the game: Leslie Bateman scored 14 points and Taylor
Johnson added 11 as West Jordan pulled away from Hunter in the
second half and claimed its first Region 3 victory.

Hunter's best moment: The games was tied 11-11 after the first
quarter and the Wolverines trailed just 26-20 at halftime. Innie
Pataialii was the top scorer with nine points.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars dominated the second
half, outscoring Hunter 26-11. West Jordan shot well. This win
could do wonders for the Jags' confidence.

Statistical notes: West Jordan was 12-17 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 7-9. Each team made two three-pointers. West
Jordan's 52 points was a season high.

What we learned from this game: Hunter has lost six straight
games since its Dec. 20 win at Logan, and the future against
Region 3 opponents doesn't look good.

Next: Hunter travels to play Region 3 power Riverton on Jan. 20.
West Jordan has Copper Hills at home the same night.

Jan. 13 - Copper Hills 33, Hunter 27

Story of the game: Brittany Hackworth scored eight points and Kim
Bohne and Shelby Clayson added seven each as Copper Hills
captured its first win of the season, beating Hunter in each team's
Region 3 opener.

Hunter's best moment: Hunter made a nice comeback in the
fourth quarter, cutting a 28-15 deficit to six points eventually.
Latiesha Webster led the Wolverines with 10 points.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies jumped to a 9-2
first-quarter lead and then came out in the second half and
extended it. They were able to put their reserves in the game late.

Statistical notes: There weren't many fouls called in this game.
Copper Hills was 2-7 from the free-throw line, while Hunter was
1-1. Hackworth had a pair of three-pointers for Copper Hills.

What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game for
Hunter, and it now means the Wolverines may end up in the
Region 3 cellar.

Next: Hunter has West Jordan at home on Jan. 15. Copper Hills
takes on
Kearns at home the same night.

Jan. 9 - Skyline 40, Hunter 31

Story of the game: Hannah Bezdjian scored 12 points as Skyline
held off Hunter in a non-region game for its fifth straight victory.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines made a nice rally to keep
the game close, but couldn't keep it going in the fourth period.
Latiesha Webster was Hunter's top scorer with 12 points.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led 12-7 after the first quarter,
but couldn't put Hunter away. Dickson and Whitney Jenkins added
nine points apiece.

Statistical notes: Skyline was 4-10 from the free-throw line; Hunter
was 5-14. This is the first of a three-game homestand for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: Hunter finished the non-region
schedule with a 1-9 record and has been inconsistent. Without a
big change, this team is headed for the region cellar.

Next: Hunter starts Region 3 action at home against Copper Hills
Jan. 13.
Skyline begins Region 3 play at Hillcrest.

Jan. 6 - Spanish Fork 50, Hunter 25

Story of the game: Rachelle Remund scored 15 points and Erin
Redd had 12 as Spanish Fork dominated the second half and
claimed the easy non-region win.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines led 11-10 after the first
quarter and trailed just 24-19 at halftime. Innie Patailii led with
seven points.

Spanish Fork's best moment: The Dons outscored Hunter 26-6 in
the second half and that was basically the difference in the game.

Statistical notes: Hunter was 0-4 from the free-throw line; Spanish
Fork was 14-22. Andrea Hammond and Utu Bloomfield had six
points each for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: Twenty-five points won't win
many games. Where was Latiesha Webster? One day she's the
top scorer, and then she's gone.

Next: Hunter plays host to Skyline Jan. 9. Spanish Fork opens
Region 4 play at home against Pleasant Grove the same night.

Story of the game: Gabby Granthem scored 19 points as Lehi held
off Hunter in a non-region game, ending its two-game losing
streak.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines made a nice rally in the
second and third quarter and make this a close game. Latiesha
Webster had 18 points for Hunter.

Lehi's best moment: The Pioneers led the entire game, jumping to
a 15-6 first-quarter lead. After Hunter cut the margin to two points,
Lehi had to hit important free throws to hang on to the win.

Statistical notes: Hunter was just 3-14 from the free-throw line;
Lehi was 11-18. Granthem had three treys for Lehi. Webster had a
pair for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: This was a close loss and the
second one this season. Hunter hasn't had many, so it needs to
win these types of games.

Next: Hunter goes to Spanish Fork tonight (Jan. 6). Lehi opens
Region 4 play at home against Timpanogos Jan. 9.

Dec. 30 - Taylorsville 55, Hunter 30

Story of the game: Freshman Sione Lo'amanu scored 17 points
as Taylorsville roared past Hunter in easy fashion in a non-region
game.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines best offensive effort was
the second quarter, when they scored 11 points. This game was
never really close. Andrea Hammond was the top scorer with six
points.

Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors led 27-17 at halftime,
but really pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Hunter 15-4.
Saane Lo'amanu had 12 points.

Statistical notes: Hunter had just eight field goals and was 14-28
from the free-throw line; Taylorsville was 14-20. The Warriors' 55
points tied a season high.

What we learned from this game: After earning their first win, the
Wolverines drop another after giving up a season-high on defense.

Next: Hunter goes to Lehi Jan. 5. Taylorsville has Delta at home
Jan. 6.

Dec. 20 - Hunter 35, Logan 26

Story of the game: Latiesha Webster scored 15 points, but it was
Hunter's first-half defense that gave the Wolverines a big lead and
helped them earn their first win of the season.

Hunter's best moment: There had to be some smiles on the
team's collective faces when the final buzzer sounded. Hunter
outscored Logan 11-5 in the fourth quarter to hang on to the victory.

Logan's best moment: The Grizzlies trailed 16-7 at halftime, but
engineered a third-quarter rally to cut the deficit to 24-21.

Statistical notes: Logan's 26 points was a season low - by far.
Chelsey Mestes had eight points for Hunter. The Wolverines were
just 1-3 from the free-throw line. Logan was 4-13.

What we learned from this game: Hey, it's Hunter's first win and
they get to enjoy it during the holidays. The key was defense, which
keeps teams in games even when they're not playing well.

Next: Hunter has a home game against Taylorsville Dec. 30.
Logan takes on Preston, Idaho Dec. 23.

Dec. 16 - Hillcrest 46, Hunter 44

Story of the game: Lexi Amundsen scored 13 points and had 18
rebounds, but it was Whitney Erickson's two free throws late in the
game that allowed Hillcrest to turn back Hunter in a non-region
game.

Hunter's best moment: Innie Patailii had 18 points and Chelsey
Mestes 10 and they led the Wolverines huge comeback. Hunter
had a 14-0 run in that final period, but it wasn't quite enough. The
Wolverines remained winless.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies led most of the game, and
held a 14-point advantage (42-28) entering the final quarter. Stone
backed up Amundsen with 12 points. Erickson's two charity shots
were here only points.

Statistical notes: Hunter left some points at the free-throw line,
where they were 17-39. Hillcrest was 11-22. This was Hunter's
second straight close loss.

What we learned from this game: This was Hunter's second
straight comeback attempt, and it almost worked. It won't be long
before the Wolverines win a game.

Next: Hunter goes to Logan Dec. 20. Hillcrest travels to East today
(Dec. 17).

Dec. 11 - Cyprus 43, Hunter 40

Story of the game: Kirstie Henriod continued her scoring tear,
pouring in 28 points as Cyprus held off Hunter in a non-region
game.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines rallied in the fourth quarter
and almost pulled out the victory. Latiesha Webster and Innie
Patailii nailed two baskets each from long range, but Hunter
couldn't get another when it needed.

Cyprus' best moment: Cyprus held a small lead (25-22) at the end
of the third, but broke the game open by outscoring Hunter 11-5 in
the third period.

Statistical notes: Cyprus had a big advantage at the free-throw
line, hitting 17-26 shots, compared to 8-12 for Hunter. Ashlyn
Mulford had seven points for Cyprus. Webster led Hunter with 14
points.

What we learned from this game: Hunter plays great defense, but
let this one get away. The 43 points given up was a season high.
Since the offense isn't where it needs to be, the defense needs to
improve before the Wolverines can earn that first win.

Next: Hunter goes to Hillcrest on Dec. 16. Cyprus travels to
Clearfield the same night.

Dec. 4 - West 39, Hunter 31

Story of the game: Valencia Manu scored 13 points and West
used its three-point shooting to turn back Hunter in a non-region
game.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines had trouble scoring. They
trailed 30-16 entering the final quarter before putting together a
nice rally. Uma Bloomfield had a season-high 12 points.

West's best moment: Manu had three treys for West, and the team
had five overall. West's defense played well, holding Hunter to just
eight first-half points. After giving up 87 points to Sky View two
nights ag, that had to feel good.

Statistical notes: Rikie Gregg and Destynee Rios had seven
points apiece for West. Latiesha Webster had six points for Hunter.
West was 4-7 from the free-throw line, compared to 10-22 for
Hunter.

What we learned from this game: Hunter has started the season
0-3 and its lack of offense is the primary reason. The Wolverines
are averaging just 31 points per game. That won't win many
games.

Next: Hunter travels to Cyprus on Dec. 11. West plays at Box Elder
Dec. 9.

Dec. 2 - Jordan 41, Hunter 36

Story of the game: Bree Scuderi scored 13 points and Jordan
shook off a poor free-throw shooting night to pick up its first win in
a non-region game.

Hunter's best moment: Hunter led 10-6 after the first quarter.
Latiesha Webster was the team's leading scorer with 16 points,
including a pair of three-point baskets.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers outscored Hunter 10-7 in
the final quarter to fend off a comeback attempt. Luciana Soares
had nine points, all on three-point baskets.

Statistical notes: Jordan had four three-pointers as Scuderi picked
up one. Innie Patailii had eight points for Hunter and Uma
Bloomfield six. Jordan was 3-14 from the free-throw line. Hunter
was 10-17.

What we learned from this game: A tough loss for the Wolverines,
but certainly a better performance than last week. Hunter is
improving.

Next: Hunter takes on West at home Dec. 4. Jordan plays 5A
power Lone Peak the same night.

Nov. 25 - Delta 39, Hunter 26

Story of the game: Shanell Bliss scored 14 points and the Delta
defense held Hunter scoreless in the fourth quarter, allowing the
Rabbits to claim the win in the season opener for both teams.

Hunter's best moment: This was a tough way to start the season.
Hunter trailed almost the entire game, and then didn't mount a
fourth-quarter comback. Innie Patailii led the Wolverines with nine
points.

Delta's best moment: The Rabbits led 31-26 entering the fourth
quarter and the defense should be proud of what it accomplished
after that. Bliss' 14 points included two three-point baskets.

Statistical notes: Hunter was just 2-8 from the free-throw line, so
the team's poor shooting was everywhere.

What we learned from this game: It's the first game of the season,
and a learning experience. Now, Hunter just needs to go back to
practice and prepare for the next game.

Next: Hunter comes home to play Jordan Dec. 2. Delta goes to
South Sevier the same night.
