March 2 - Davis 59, Jordan 52
Story of the game: Landon Horne scored 14 points and Blake
Gardner had a season-high 12 as Davis took advantage of
Jordan's foul trouble and pulled away late in the game to secure a
5A state tournament victory.
Jordan's highlights: The Diggers led 25-24 at halftime behind the
scoring of Joe Mero and Taylor Smith, and trailed just 43-42 early
in the fourth quarter. Kevin Goldsmith fouled out and three other
players had four personals. Mero finished with 16 points.
Davis's highlights: The Darts knew this wouldn't be an easy win,
despite playing at home. They often drove to the basket to try to pick
up fouls. They eventually succeeded and made 22-30 free throws.
Statistical notes: Jordan shot 8-27 from three-point land, and had
to rely on perimeter shooting in the second half. Steve Morgan was
credited with 10 assists.
What we learned from this game: Jordan put forth a valiant effort,
but lost to Davis for the second time this year. The Darts eventually
made it to the championship game. Jordan coach Rob Geertsen
felt the Diggers could have made it to the finals with a win here.

this game, and Davis County Clipper sent a reporter. To read the

Feb. 27 - Jordan 52, Cottonwood 49
Story of the game: Kevin Goldsmith scored 11 of his 15 points in
the second half as Jordan held off Cottonwood in a first round 5A
state tournament game and end a four-game losing streak.
Jordan's highlights: The Diggers' experience showed. Goldsmith
came alive, Joe Mero hit a couple of key free throws in the final
minute and the defense stopped a three-point attempt. All this was
needed to end their own doubts from losing four straight games.
Cottonwood's highlights: The Colts played without F Vlad Malugin,
who was injured and sorely missed. Korbin Dooley, Parker Vassau
and Rollin Carter had timely baskets. Raymond Chavez tried to
make the tying three-pointer and may have been fouled, but no call.
Statistical notes: Jordan's Nate Monson did a nice job defending
Daniel Kristensen, who struggled to find good shots. Cottonwood
committed 22 turnovers. The Colts made 6-13 three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: Jordan escaped with a victory
and coach Rob Geertsen hopes its enough for the Diggers to
reclaim their midseason swagger in time to play Davis next.

Feb. 23 - Lone Peak 62, Jordan 48
Story of the game: Tannon Pederson scored 22 points as Lone
Peak avenged an earlier loss to Jordan home and secured fourth
place in Region 4.
Jordan's highlights: This was "Senior Night" at Jordan, and the
Diggers fell behind 17-8 in the first period. They played with Lone
Peak for the rest of the game, but the offense never got into its
usual rhythm. Kevin Goldsmith scored 14 points.
Lone Peak's highlights: The Knights started the game with five
seniors in the lineup. Freshman sensation Nick Emery had a
more-limited role, but that didn't seem to hurt. Lone Peak was
inspired and Peterson still lit it up with five treys.
Statistical notes: Brody and Brady Berry each reached double
figures for Lone Peak - a rare occurrence. Coach Rob Geertsen
emptied his bench more than usual and 10 players scored. Jordan
shot just 9-23 from the free-throw line. The Diggers were credited
with 15 assists on 18 baskets.
What we learned from this game: This was Jordan's
fourth-straight loss, and the team seemed uninspired. With the
fourth seed, Lone Peak opens the 5A state tourney at home
against Cyprus, but has top-ranked Bingham next. Jordan must
prove itself at Cottonwood.

Feb. 19 - Pleasant Grove 51, Jordan 42
Story of the game: Cory McAllister scored 16 points as Pleasant
Grove pulled away from Jordan in the second half and beat the
Beetdiggers, clinching the No. 3 seed in Region 4.
Jordan's highlights: The Diggers led 21-20 at halftime, thanks
mostly to the scoring of Kevin Goldsmith, who finished with 21
points. Joe Mero had eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Pleasant Grove's highlights: The Vikings rebounded from the loss
to Hillcrest with a big second half, outscoring Jordan 31-21. Sefa
Tanoai added 13 points and Brady Hoglund eight.
Statistical notes: Pleasant Grove made 17 of 30 free throws, while
Jordan was 4-8. Jordan's lowest offensive efforts this season
came against Pleasant Grove. Nate Monson had seven points.
What we learned from this game: Jordan is now tied with Lone
Peak for fourth place and next Tuesday's game will be the deciding
factor. Did the Diggers peak too early?

Feb. 16 - Alta 59, Jordan 58
Story of the game: Kyle Davis scored 26 points and Jordan Brown
had 17 as Alta survived to beat Jordan and move within one game
of winning the Region 4 title.
Jordan's highlights: Kevin Goldsmith led Jordan with 14 points,
and Taylor Smith came off the bench to put in a season- high 11.
The Beetdiggers fired in eight three-point baskets and had a
chance to win at the end.
Alta's highlights: This game was close throughout, but Alta took a
59-55 into the final minutes, and then played great defense on the
final possession to prevent Jordan from getting a good shot. It was
Alta's fourth one-point victory in region play.
Statistical notes: Jordan shot just 8-15 from the free-throw line.
Alta was 12-15. Joe Mero and Steve Morgan had nine points each
for Jordan. Alta swept the season series, and has won five straight
in this rivalry.
What we learned from this game: Jordan dropped its second
straight and now the region title is out of the question. There isn't
much difference between the top 4-5 teams in this region.

D-News story, click here. For the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click

Feb. 12 - Brighton 68, Jordan 52
Story of the game: Austin Hudson, Sam Wunderli and Corbin
Miller each scored in double figures as Brighton grabbed the lead
early and went on to beat Jordan in a key Region 4 contest.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers made several runs,
including a 10-4 spurt in the third quarter that cut the margin to nine
points. Nate Monson topped Jordan with 15 points.
Brighton's highlights: Hudson scored the Bengals' first six points
that Brighton built into a 17-7 first-quarter lead. The Bengals also
didn't allow Jordan a three-point basket and held Kevin Goldsmith
to just seven points.
Statistical notes: Jordan made 20-of-28 free throws. Miller had
three of Brighton's five three-pointers. Hudson finished with 18
points, Wunderli 16 and Miller 14. Steve Morgan had nine points for
Jordan.
What we learned from this game: With the loss, Jordan no longer
controls its own destiny. The Beetdiggers need to play their best
basketball down the stretch because the schedule isn't easy.

D-News story, click here. For the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click

Feb. 5 - Jordan 71, Hillcrest 60
Story of the game: Kevin Goldsmith had a career night, scoring 31
points and pulling down 12 rebounds, as Jordan buried Hillcrest in
a Region 4 game.
Jordan's highglights: This was Goldsmith's best night of the year,
and Hillcrest had no answer. Steve Morgan and Joe Mero had 13
points each, and Morgan added nine assists and six steals.
Hillcrest's highlights: The Huskies got 19 points from Matt Pecht
and 17 by Bridger Dallimore. They trailed by 18 points going into
the final period, but put together a good rally to cut the margin.
Dallimore had four three-pointers.
Statistical notes: Jordan statisticians recorded 23 assists on 28
baskets, which indicates good passing. The 71 points given up
tied Hillcrest's season high - set the game before. Goldsmith has
been on a tear and now leads the region at 19.5 ppg.
What we learned from this game: Jordan's offense came back
with authority and put 71 on Hillcrest's usually tough defense.
Jordan now has a week to prepare for Brighton.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune

Feb. 3 - Pleasant Grove 47, Jordan 44
Story of the game: Sefa Tanoai scored 14 points and Cory
McAllister had 10 as Pleasant Grove rallied from a 10-point deficit
in the final five minutes to beat Jordan in a Region 4 game.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers led most of the game, and
built the margin to 43-33 in the fourth period. Kevin Goldsmith had
another good game with 24 points and nine rebounds.
Pleasant Grove's highlights: After losing to Alta previously, PG
broke through with a quality road win. The defense had a great
game and didn't allow a three-pointer. Bryan Sampson added nine
points.
Statistical notes: Taylor Smith had another good game for Jordan
with eight points. PG shot 9-15 from the free-throw line, while
Jordan was 8-16.
What we learned from this game: Jordan dropped out of first
place again with the loss, and is now tied with Brighton and Alta.
There were a lot of people scouting this game because it was held
on a slow prep sports night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. For the Provo Herald brief, click

Jan. 29 - Jordan 67, American Fork 57

down 10 rebounds as Jordan put a nice team effort together to
down American Fork in a Region 4 game.
Jordan's highlights: The Diggers led 29-27 at halftime, and then
pulled away in the third quarter. Steve Morgan and Taylor Smith
played well at the guard positions and combined for 20 points and
10 assists.
American Fork's highlights: The Cavemen trailed in the first
quarter, but rallied in the second quarter, and then played at a
frenzied play in the fourth. Bed Beddes had 22 points and nine
rebounds. Quincy Bair had 16 points.
Statistical notes: Jordan swept the season series. Both teams
shot just 56 percent from the free-throw line. Smith's 10 points was
a career high.
What we learned from this game: Jordan is in first place again, so
let's see if the Diggers can stay there with three straight home
games.

the Deseret News brief, click here. For the Salt Lake Tribune box

Jan. 27 - Jordan 71, Lone Peak 64 (OT)
Story of the game: Joe Mero scored 20 points, and Steve Morgan
added a three-pointer and a pair of free throws in overtime as
Jordan handed Lone Peak its first home loss in over two years.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers trailed most of the game, but
rallied to tie the contest and had a chance to win in regulation, but
Morgan missed. Morgan and Kevin Goldsmith had key points in
overtime, though, and each finished with 16 points.
Lone Peak's highlights: The Knights led by six after the first quarter
and extended it to 29-21 at halftime. Nick Emery had the hot hand
again with 29 points, and Tannon Pederson had 14.
Statistical notes: Mero finished with five of Jordan's seven
three-pointers. Jordan shot 22-33 from the free-throw line, while
Lone Peak was 17-22. This was Jordan's second straight overtime
contest. Morgan had nine assists.
What we learned from this game: This was one of the biggest
wins this season for Jordan and it moved the Diggers into first
place in Region 4. Road wins are tough, but Jordan is 3-1 in region
play.

this game. To read the D-News story, click here. For the Herald

Jan. 20 - Alta 53, Jordan 49 (OT)
Story of the game: Jordan Brown scored 14 points and Brayden
Beckham added 10 as Alta opened the second half with a 10-0 run
and went on to edge Jordan in a Region 4 battle.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers jumped on Alta early, and
took advantage of Brown's foul trouble to dominate the first half.
Jordan also had a nice rally in the fourth period to force overtime.
Kevin Goldsmith and Steve Morgan were top scorers with 12 points.
Alta's highlights: The Hawks trailed throughout the first half, but
Brown keyed that big scoring spurt that actually lasted the entire
third quarter. Beckham hit the big shot in overtime to give Alta a
three-point lead.
Statistical notes: Alta made 11-19 free throws, but Jordan was just
3-11. Alta's Kyle Davis was held to six points. Beckham's 10 points
was his season high. Joe Mero had three treys for Jordan. Alta has
won straight in this rivalry.
What we learned from this game: The Beetdiggers fell apart in the
third quarter and it cost them. This was their first overtime game
this season. The loss dropped them into a tie for second place.

Jan. 15 - Jordan 63, Brighton 56
Story of the game: Joe Mero scored 10 of his 16 points in the first
quarter as Jordan used a 15-0 run to build a big lead and then held
off Brighton in a key early season Region 4 game.
Jordan's highlights: The first quarter defined this game, but so did
the final minutes. Jordan didn't wilt and stopped Brighton on three
straight possessions late to hold on to the win. Kevin Goldsmith
added 14 points and Nate Monson and Alex Hart 11 each.
Brighton's highlights: Trailing 22-4 late in the first period, the
Bengals rallied and eventually cut the margin to 53-51 on a pair of
free throws by Sam Wunderli. Corbin Miller also came alive (again)
and nailed three treys.
Statistical notes: Jordan was just 18-34 from the free-throw line.
Brighton shot 13-14. Brighton's five-point effort in the first quarter
was its worst this year.
What we learned from this game: The win gave Jordan sole
possession of first place. The Diggers' home fans all dressed in
white, and played a major role in the game.

this game. To read the D-News story, click here. To view the Salt

Jan. 8 - Jordan 53, Hillcrest 49
Story of the game: Kevin Goldsmith scored 21 points as Jordan
rallied to beat Hillcrest in the Region 4 opener for both teams.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers got their offense rolling in
the second half, scoring 34 of their 53 points. Their inside game
looked good. Nate Monson added 14 points and Joe Mero 10.
Hillcrest's highlights: The Huskies slowed the game's pace in the
first half, played well and took a 22-19 lead into halftime. Matt Pecht
scored 13 points, while Bridger Dallimore and Danny Thompson
had 10.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot poorly - 50 percent - from the
free-throw line. Hillcrest made seven three-pointers, while Jordan
had just one. Jordan was credited with 12 assists (on 20 baskets),
so it passed the ball well.
What we learned from this game: Jordan grabbed a win that
could have gone either way and moved to 1-0 in region play. The
Diggers have now won six of seven away games and have a week
off to prepare for Brighton.

Jan. 6 - Jordan 54, American Fork 51
Story of the game: Kevin Goldsmith, Nate Monson and Joe Mero
each had big games as Jordan rallied twice to edge American Fork
in the Region 4 opener for both teams.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers never quit. They trailed 18-4
early, and had to deal with AF's raucous home crowd. Still, they
rallied to take a two-point halftime lead. Jordan also rallied from an
eight-point deficit in the third period.
American Fork's highlights: The Cavemen certainly made Jordan
earn the victory. Ben Beddes and Marcel Davis led the way, helping
AF to an early 7-0 lead, but they couldn't hang on. Beddes finished
with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Statistical notes: Jordan connected only 18-31 free throws. The
Diggers had 12 assists on 16 baskets. Monson had 11 rebounds.
Goldsmith had scored in double figures in every game so far.
What we learned from this game: Jordan snatched victory from
defeat and moved to 8-2 overall. A lot of Region 4 games could be
like this, and road victories are difficult. It was a good start.

Jan. 2 - Jordan 58, Cottonwood 49

period. Goldsmith scored eight straight points at one point and
teammate Joe Mero had the hot hand outside, nailing four

points. Four different players nailed three-pointers.
Statistical notes: Jordan was 14-23 from the free-throw line.
Cottonwood was 9-20. This was Jordan's fourth game this week,
and the players said they were tired.

another good performance as they prepare for the Region 4
schedule.

Goldsmith had 17 as Jordan buried Logan with a big second
quarter in the Logan CVE tournament.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers trailed 17-13 after one
period, but roared to a 17-point halftime advantage. Sperry finished
with six three-pointers and the defense also helped with 15 steals.
Logan's highlights: The Grizzlies played well in the opening
quarter, but couldn't come back after the second-quarter onslaught.
Sage Nyman had 15 points, Kerby Olsen 14 and Luke Patterson
13.
Statistical notes: Goldsmith was Jordan's rebounding leader with
nine. Steve Morgan had a good game 12 points and seven assists.
Goldsmith was named to the all-tournament team.
What we learned from this game: Jordan played well in the
tournament, with only a close loss to top-ranked Bingham
preventing the Beetdiggers from the tournament title.

Dec. 29 - Bingham 61, Jordan 59
Story of the game: Shad Sommerville scored 13 points, including
the winning basket in the final seconds, to lift Bingham past Jordan
and into the championship game of the Logan CVE tournament.
Jordan's highlights: Kevin Goldsmith scored 25 points and had a
great game. Joe Mero added 17 points, including the game-tying
three-pointer that allowed the Beetdiggers to rally from an 11-point
deficit.
Bingham's highlights: The Miners trailed throughout the first half,
but rallied in the third period to take a 45-39 lead. Ben Clifford was
saddled with foul trouble, so Sommerville, Nate Girsberger, Ty
Hannay and Spencer Brown picked up the slack.
Statistical notes: Bingham outscored Jordan 24-9 in the third and
fourth quarters with Clifford on the bench. The Miners biggest lead
was 50-39. Mero had four three-pointers. Surprisingly, Bingham
had none.
What we learned from this game: Goldsmith had his best game
of the season, and against stiff competition. This was a great
game and shows Jordan might be better than expected.

D-News story, click here. There was no report in the Salt Lake

Dec. 28 - Jordan 85, San Bernardino, Calif. 59
Story of the game - Kevin Goldsmith scored 20 points and Joe
Mero had 18 as Jordan buried San Bernardino in the first round of
the Logan Holiday Classic.
Jordan's highlights - The Beetdiggers blew the game open in the
second quarter and took a 13-point lead into halftime. They
extended it from there. Jordan's 85 points was a season high and
they nailed eight three-pointers.
San Bernardino's highlights - It was a tiring day for San
Bernardino, which played two games because one California team
cancelled at the last minute. Devonte Chattman led with 14 points,
while Victor Evans and Jeremiah Tardy added 11.
Statistical notes - This was San Bernardino's first game. It played
host Logan in an evening matchup. Jordan was 13-21 from the
free-throw line. San Bernardino was 8-14. Goldsmith boosted his
average to 18.8 ppg. Mero had four three-pointers.
What we learned from this game - Jordan dominated the game,
and probably was helped that San Bernardino may not have been
acclimated yet. It was the Digger's fourth straight win.

Dec. 15 - Jordan 61, Judge Memorial 57
Story of the game - Kevin Goldsmith and Nate Monson scored 14
points apiece to lead Jordan past Judge Memorial in a non-region
game.
Jordan's highlights - The Beetdiggers jumped to a 14-3 lead and
won their third straight. Monson also pulled down 13 rebounds.
The Diggers led the entire game, and hit enough free throws late to
hold on to it.
Judge's highlights - Will Whitt had 15 points, but had foul
problems and wasn't that much of a factor. Basil Vetas had 14 for
Judge, including a three-pointer in the third quarter that cut the
margin to two points. Ben Cook scored 12 points and Zach Myaer
10.
Statistical notes - Jordan hit 11-20 free throws. Judge was 7-10.
Steve Morgan had nine assists for Jordan. Alex Hart had a
season-high nine points and five rebounds.
What we learned from this game - Jordan led the entire game, but
could never pull away. The Diggers have won three straight and go
into the Christmas break with some momentum, but without much
road experience.

Dec. 12 - Jordan 65, Riverton 53
Story of the game - Kevin Goldsmith scored 19 points and Joe
Mero and Nate Monson had 18 each as Jordan outscored Riverton
to claim the first-place trophy at the Jordan Holiday Classic.
Jordan's highlights - The Beetdiggers led the entire game and
won despite little bench help. Jordan controlled the inside game
and Steve Morgan had a nice game with seven assists. Mero was
named the tournament's MVP.
Riverton's highlights - The Silverwolves got a season-high 16
points from Garrett Gunderstrup and 11 by Alex Neilson. Garrett
Burt had nine points.
Statistical notes - Both teams shot about 70 percent from the
free-throw line. Goldsmith had seven rebounds and three steals.
What we learned from this game - Jordan lost both of its tourney
games last year, so their success this year will likely insure the
tourney for next season.

Dec. 11 - Jordan 75, Taylorsville 45
Story of the game - Joe Mero scored 22 points and Kevin
Goldsmith had 18 as Jordan dominated Taylorsville early and went
on to earn an easier-than-expected victory in the first round of the
Jordan Holiday Classic.
Jordan's highlights- Mero had the hot hand from outside (six
three-pointers) and Steve Morgan had a season-high eight assists
in the game. Jordan emptied its bench and started its tournament
in a good way.
Taylorsville's highlights - The Warriors didn't show up. They trailed
43-18 by halftime and were never in the game. Stevie McCloyn had
14 points and Andrew Togiai 13. Taylorsville played even with
Jordan in the second half, but it wasn't enough.
Statistical notes - Jordan's 75 points was - by far - a season high.
Nate Monson added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. The
big quarter was the second, when Jordan outscored Taylorsville
24-7.
What we learned from this game - This was a great effort by the
host team. Jordan probably elevated its game after losing both
contests in its tournament last year.

Dec. 4 - Davis 66, Jordan 56
Story of the game: Josh Vanweezep had 19 points and Trevor
Webb 18 as Davis pulled away from Jordan in the third period and
handed the Beetdiggers their first loss.
Jordan's highlights: The Diggers led 23-17 after one quarter, but
had trouble with their offense after that. Kevin Goldsmith had 23
points and Joe Mero finished with 17.
Davis's highlights: Vanweezep had four treys, and Webb three for
Davis, which improved to 2-0. The Darts outscored Jordan 34-17
during the middle two quarters, and that was enough to earn the
victory.
Statistical notes: Davis had 10 treys, while Jordan had four. Kyle
Smith had 11 points for Davis.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game, but
Davis got off to a quick start in the third period and turned the game
around.

Dec. 1 - Jordan 58, Murray 51
Story of the game: Kevin Goldsmith scored 19 points as Jordan
rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat Murray in the season
opener for both teams.
Jordan's highlights: The Beetdiggers outscored Murray 21-8 in the
third period to make it a game, and Jordan didn't stop. Joe Mero
and Nate Monson added 14 points apiece. Mero had three treys.
Murray's highlights: David Collette was Murray's top scorer with 14
points. Julian Moore and Mitch Tate had eight apiece. The
Spartans had a big second quarter, outscoring Jordan 20-6.
Statistical notes: Jordan outscored Murray 41-20 in the second
half. Murray shot 17-19 from the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: Jordan snatched victory from
defeat by forcing several Murray turnovers in the second half, and
then went on a scoring spurt that they would be known for
throughout the season.
