                  JORDAN BOYS BASKETBALL
March 2 - Lone Peak 50, Jordan 38

Story of the game: Tyler Haws scored 20 points and Nate Austin
had 19 as Lone Peak rallied in the third quarter and ended Jordan's
upset hopes in the first round of the 5A state tournament.

Jordan's best moment: Curt Follett got off to a hot start, making
three treys in the first quarter, and Jordan actually held the lead
through halftime. The third quarter was actually Jordan's only bad
moment, but it was enough. Colton Burgon added 12 points.

Lone Peak's best moment: You can't hold the favored team down
forever. Austin kept Lone Peak close in the first half, and Haws took
over in the third period, scoring the first seven points.

Statistical notes: Lone Peak had a big advantage at the free throw
line, hitting 18-24 shots; Jordan was just 2-3. Leading scorer Jordan
Bernardo had just three points. Follett finished with four
three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: Jordan put up a good fight in a
game it wasn't supposed to win. The Beetdiggers started strong,
and that usually wins tournament games.

Next: Jordan finished the season with a 14-8 record. Lone Peak
advanced to play
Riverton March 4.

Feb. 24 - Alta 54, Jordan 35

Story of the game: Jordy Brown and Nate Nielsen scored 13 points
apiece as Alta took the lead at the beginning and beat Jordan to win
the Region 2 title.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers rallied and eventually cut
the margin to 36-31 near the end of the third quarter, but ran out of
energy. Jordan Bernardo had 12 points for Jordan and Colton
Burgon had 11.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks jumped on Jordan early,
implementing a zone defense that frustrated the visitors and that
allowed Alta to claim a 14-3 first-quarter lead. When the Beetdiggers
rallied, Alta put the game away with a 15-0 run to start the fourth
quarter.

Statistical notes: Alta hit 10-11 free throws in the fourth quarter and
finished 12-14 from the line for the game. Ammon Olsen injured his
ankle and played sparingly. He finished with two points.

What we learned from this game: The Diggers had their chance,
but couldn't quite do it. The bad news is now they get a No. 4 seed
and that won't help their chances in the 5A state tournament.

Next: Jordan will play powerhouse Lone Peak in the state tourney
March 2.
Alta opens against Weber.

Feb. 20 - Jordan 71, Taylorsville 58

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 25 points and Curt
Follett added 21 as Jordan beat Taylorsville and set up a Region 2
championship battle next week.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers led just 31-29 at halftime,
but pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Taylorsville 20-12 to
take a 10-point lead. Follett had five of Jordan's season-high nine
three-point baskets.

Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors played tough, and rode
Jordan Edgington's 19 points to stay close in the first half. Stevie
McCloyn added 11 points, but Taylorsville couldn't keep up with
Jordan's perimeter shooting.

Statistical notes: Taylorsville hit 16-21 free throws, while Jordan
was 18-27. Bernardo had three treys. Taylorsville had just two.

What we learned from this game: If Jordan wins at Alta next, the
Diggers will likely force a four-way tie for first place. Seedings for the
5A state tournament would be determined by a series of coin flips.

Next: Jordan finishes the regular season at Alta Feb. 24. Taylorsville
travels to
Brighton the same night.

Feb. 13 - Jordan 74, Brighton 72

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo had a season-high 28 points
and the Beetdiggers took advantage of a decent foul differential to
hold off Brighton and move into a tie for third place in Region 2.

Jordan's best moment: Bernardo put the Diggers on his back. He
was - by far - the leading scorer and Brighton couldn't stop him even
when it knew he was going to try to score. Jordan shot 70 percent
from the free-throw line.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals to a season-high 24 points
from Will Cannon and 20 points from Sam Wunderli. This was
Brighton's style of play, with plenty of offense, but there wasn't quite
enough defense.

Statistical notes: Jordan's 74 points was a season high. The
Diggers also won their third straight game. Kevin Goldsmith added
10 points for Jordan. Neil Richards had 11 points for Brighton. The
Bengals were 17-24 from the free-throw line; Jordan was 28-41.

What we learned from this game: Jordan seems to be peaking at
the right time. The Diggers clinched a 4A state tournament berth,
and now can possibly move higher than a No. 4 seed.

Next: Jordan plays host to Taylorsville on Feb. 20. Brighton goes to
Hillcrest the same night.

Feb. 10 - Jordan 40, Skyline 37

Story of the game: Colton Burgon scored 13 points and Curt Follett
added 10 as Jordan rallied in the fourth quarter to hand Skyline its
second straight Region 2 loss.

Jordan's best moment: Skyline tried to shut down leading scorer
Jordan Bernardo, but the Beetdiggers' outside shooting was there,
nailing five three-point baskets in this defensive battle. Skyline led
29-27 going into the final quarter.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles trailed 21-14 at halftime, but
outscored Jordan 15-6 in the third quarter to take the lead. Ryan
Osterloh found his shooting touch again, leading the team with 15
points. Kevin Wagstaff was held to three.

Statistical notes: Skyline's 37 points was a season low. Wagstaff
and Jaxson Judkins had treys for the Eagles, but none came from
Osterloh.

What we learned from this game: The win moved Jordan into a tie
for third place with Skyline, and the Diggers could move up even
further by beating Brighton next.

Next: Jordan takes on Brighton at home Feb. 13. Skyline travels to
Taylorsville the same night.

Feb. 6 - Jordan 67, Hillcrest 49

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo led a balanced scoring attack
with 13 points as Jordan buried Hillcrest in a Region 2 game for the
second time this season and virtually clinched a 5A state
tournament berth.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers led 29-21 at halftime, but
then poured it on in the third quarter to take a 19-point lead. Kevin
Goldsmith and Curt Follett had 12 points; Colton Burgon had 11.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies still had a chance in the first
half, but Jordan seemed to figure out their defense after that. Kyle
Maughan led Hillcrest with 15 points and Curtis Blackmore had 10.

Statistical notes: Jordan beat Hillcrest 61-41 earlier. These two
wins were the most lopsided of any Region 2 game this season.
Jordan hit 20-26 free throws; Hillcrest was 13-20. Bernardo had two
three-pointers; Bubba Pecht had a pair for Hillcrest.

What we learned from this game: Jordan has a two-game lead on
Hillcrest for the last state tourney berth, and owns the tiebreaker.
One more win - or a Hillcrest loss - will clinch it.

Next: Jordan travels to play Skyline Feb. 10. Hillcrest goes to
Taylorsville the same night.

Feb. 3 - Alta 58, Jordan 53

Story of the game: Jed DeLeeuw scored 16 points, but it was Javon
Goodman who took over the offense in the fourth quarter as Alta
rallied to beat rival Jordan in a Region 2 game.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers were at home and - once
again - had a lot of fan support and a great home-court advantage.
Jordan took an 18-14 lead and actually was ahead most of the
game. Jordan Bernardo led with 15 points.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks trailed 41-39 entering the final
period, but Goodman scored six points as Alta took the lead and hit
enough free throws to hold on to it. Jordy Brown added 11 points.

Statistical notes: Alta was 10-14 from the free-throw line, while
Jordan was only 9-18. Alta had four three-pointers; Curt Follett had
both of Jordan's treys.

What we learned from this game: Jordan had a chance to win this
game, but lost at home to the Hawks, just like last year. Jordan is in
fourth place but needs to at least stay ahead of Hillcrest in order to
earn a 5A state tournament berth.

Next: Jordan goes to Hillcrest on Feb. 6. Alta plays host to
Taylorsville the same night.

Jan. 30 - Jordan 60, Taylorsville 50

Story of the game: Curt Follett scored 15 points and Colton Burgon
added 14 as Jordan led the entire way and defeated Taylorsville in a
Region 2 game.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers led 16-6 at the end of the
first quarter and kept a safe advantage most of the game. Jordan hit
enough free throws at the end to even extend the lead. Kevin
Goldsmith had nine points and Jordan Bernardo eight.

Taylorsville's best moment: After a tough first quarter, the Warriors
battled back and chipped at the lead, narrowing it to five points.
Jordan Edgington had 14 points and Stevie McCloyn 10.

Statistical notes: Jordan was 15-21 from the free-throw line;
Taylorsville was 6-13.

What we learned from this game: The win ended a two-game
losing streak, and Jordan did a nice job not allowing this one to slip
away.

Next: Jordan returns home to play Alta Feb. 3. Taylorsville has
Brighton at home the same night.

Jan. 23 - Brighton 61, Jordan 59

Story of the game: Xan Ricketts scored 17 points, and Sam
Wunderli added 16 points and 15 rebound as Brighton held off
Jordan in a tough Region 2 game.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers stayed close all the way.
Colton Burgon had 19 points, while Jordan Bernardo and Curt
Follett added 16 each.

Brighton's best moment: With Miller out, this has become
Wunderli's team and he showed it. He also had five assists and four
blocked shots in the win. He even hit a three-pointer. Allen Barker
helped out with 11 points.

Statistical notes: Brighton was a pathetic 7-21 from the free-throw
line (in its own gym). Jordan was 14-21.

What we learned from this game: The Diggers have lost two
straight by close margins, and are near the bottom of the Region 2
race. This team is too good to be there. Jordan will recover. They've
proven they can do that already.

Next: Jordan goes to Taylorsville on Jan. 30. Brighton plays host to
Hillcrest the same night.

Jan. 20 - Skyline 48, Jordan 41

Story of the game: Davey Weixler led a balanced scoring attack with
12 points, and the Eagles hit five consecutive free throws down the
stretch, to help Skyline hold off Jordan in a Region 2 game.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers made a nice rally, scoring
20 of their 41 points in the fourth quarter. Curt Follett had 14 points
and Colton Burgon 10.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles' defense was the key, helping
Skyline to a 34-21 lead entering the fourth quarter. Jordan rallied, but
the Eagles hit their free throws.

Statistical notes: Ryan Osterloh and Casey Taylor had 11 points
each for Skyline. Eagles hit 14-21 free throws; Jordan was 19-25.
The loss ended Jordan's five-game win streak. Jordan's 41 points
was its second lowest this season.

What we learned from this game: The loss ended Jordan's
five-game win streak. In this region, the difference between the No. 1
and No. 4 teams won't be much.

Next: Jordan goes to Brighton Jan. 23. Skyline plays host to
Taylorsville the same night.

Jan. 16 - Jordan 61, Hillcrest 41

Story of the game: Colton Burgon led a balance scoring attack with
18 points as Jordan opened the Region 2 season with a convincing
home win over Hillcrest.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers established their offense
early, which is rare against a defensive-minded Hillcrest team.
Jordan hit 22-29 free throws, many of those down the stretch, to
even expand the lead.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies didn't maintain a threat,
which is rare for them. Curtis Blackmore led Hillcrest with 10 points.
The Huskies trailed the whole game, but only had one three-point
basket.

Statistical notes: Jordan's 61 points was the second most Hillcrest
has given up this season. Jordan Bernardo had 14 points, while
Curt Follett had 12 and Kevin Goldsmith 11. Bernardo had three
treys.

What we learned from this game: A good win for Jordan, even
though it's somewhat apparent Hillcrest will be the region's weakest
team.

Next: Jordan plays Skyline at home on Jan. 20. Hillcrest takes on
Taylorsville at home the same night.

Jan. 9 - Jordan 54, West Jordan 52

Story of the game: Colton Burgon scored 13 points and Kevin
Goldsmith hit the deciding free throws late in the game to lift Jordan
to its fourth straight win - over rival West Jordan - in a non-region
game.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers trailed early, but rallied in
the third quarter to narrow the gap. The fourth quarter had the most
scoring, but also the most defense. It was played at a frantic pace
with the home crowd as loud as it's been this season.

West Jordan's best moment: This game was played in a
playoff-type atmosphere, so that's good for the Jaguars in the long
run. Mason Sawyer and Jordan Weirick had 14 points apiece.

Statistical notes: D.J. Tialavea had a chance to tie the game late,
but missed two free throws. He wasn't alone. West Jordan hit just
8-19 in the game. Goldsmith and Jordan Bernardo had 10 points for
Jordan.

What we learned from this game: Jordan fans made this game
one of the best of the season by dressing in white. The "white out"
certainly played a role in the Diggers' win.

Next: Jordan opens Region 2 play Jan. 16 at home against Hillcrest.
West Jordan plays host to region rival Hunter the same night.

Dec. 30 - Jordan 63, Springville 61

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 21 points and was
named the tournament's MVP in the Beetdiggers' narrow win over
Springville in the title contest of the LHS/CVE Holiday Classic in
Logan.

Jordan's best moment: Jordan led most of the game, and had an
eight-point lead with a minute remaining. The Beetdiggers' outside
shot was on, as they hit seven three-pointers. Curt Follett had 14
points.

Springville's best moment: The Red Devils made a nice run in the
final minute, but it wasn't enough. Dan Foster led Springville with 19
points, while Alex Mortensen had 15.

Statistical notes: Colton Burgon made the all-tourney team. Other
tourney scores were: Pleasant Grove 71, Logan 56; Cyprus 54, Juan
Diego 48, and Timpanogos 50, Tooele 44.

What we learned from this game: Jordan is now on a three-game
winning streak and has regained its momentum. Bernardo
impressed a lot of people with his play in this tourney.

Next: Jordan returns home to take on West Jordan Jan. 9.
Springville plays at Payson Jan. 13.

Dec. 29 - Jordan 58, Pleasant Grove 55

Story of the game: Kevin Goldsmith and Jordan Bernardo scored
14 points apiece as the Beetdiggers rallied from an 11-point deficit
in the third quarter to beat Pleasant Grove and advance to the title
game of the LHS/CVE Holiday Classic in Logan.

Jordan's best moment: Jordan took a 20-16 first-quarter lead, but
then Pleasant Grove took over. The Beetdiggers came back again
midway through the third period. Curt Follett's steal and layup with
2:17 left gave Jordan the lead for good.

Pleasant Grove's best moment: The Vikings outscored Jordan 19-8
in the second quarter and led most of the game. C.J. Wilcox had 24
points for PG. LeSean Wilcox added 16.

Statistical notes: Jordan hit 22-31 free throws. PG was 16-20.
Colton Burgon had 12 points; Follett had 10. Other tourney scores
were: Springville 75, Logan 56; Juan Diego 43, Tooele 40, and
Cyprus 49, Timpanogos 44.

What we learned from this game: This was a big win for Jordan's
rebuilding confidence, and it put the Diggers into the title game. A
title here could be the highlight of the season (to date) and help
replace the frustration of being beaten twice in their own tourney last
week.

Next: Jordan advances to play Springville in the title game. Pleasant
Grove takes on Logan.

Dec. 27 - Jordan 67, Tooele 45

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 17 points, including
three treys, as Jordan took the lead and whipped Tooele on the first
day of the LHS/CVE Holiday Classic in Logan.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers led 28-20 at halftime, but
then blew Cyprus out with a 22-12 third-quarter run. Colton Burgon
added 11 points, Curt Follett and Kevin Goldsmith 10 each.

Tooele's best moment: The Buffaloes stayed close in the first
quarter, but didn't have the firepower to match up with Jordan.
Tanner Stuart led Tooele with 13 points.

Statistical notes: Nine players scored for Jordan, which ended a
three-game losing streak. The referees let the teams play as Jordan
was 6-11 from the free-throw line, and Tooele was 3-4.

What we learned from this game: Jordan had more depth than
Tooele and got back on the winning track.

Next: Jordan advances in the winners bracket and will play Pleasant
Grove Monday (Dec. 29).
Tooele will take on Juan Diego.

Dec. 20 - Lehi 60, Jordan 58

Story of the game: Jacob Obioma fed Will Walker with a nice pass
that resulted in a layup with three seconds left to give Lehi a win over
Jordan in the Jordan tournament.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers were down by as many as
nine points in the fourth quarter, but tied it with about 30 seconds
left. Jordan Bernardo had 18 points and Colton Burgon 16.

Lehi's best moment: The Pioneers jumped to a 21-9 lead, but gave
it away in the second quarter. Lehi led most of the second half,
although it remained close. Obioma and Walker had 16 points
apiece.

Statistical notes: Jordan was 15-18 from the free-throw line. Curt
Follett had 10 points for Jordan. Corey Smith had 10 for Lehi.

What we learned from this game: After opening the season with a
pair close wins, Jordan has since lost two close ones. Bernardo
was named to the all-tourney team.

Next: Jordan heads up to Logan to play in a tournament there Dec.
27-30.
Lehi plays host to Copper Hills on Dec. 23.

Dec. 19 - Granger 50, Jordan 49

Story of the game: T.J. Tapusoa scored 17 points, including an
off-balance three-point basket as time expired, to lift Granger
to a thrilling non-region win over Jordan in the first round of the
Jordan tournament.

Jordan's best moment: Jordan seemingly had the game won, and
in exciting fashion, before Granger hit the winning shot. Colton
Burgon had 17 points for the Beetdiggers, while Curt Follett had 15.
Follett was Jordan's outside shooting threat, with three treys.

Granger's best moment: The game was close the entire time.
Tapusoa's 17 points was a season high. He also had help as
teammate Woul Koyom added 16.

Statistical notes: Jordan led 41-38 entering the final quarter. Jordan
Bernardo, the Diggers' leading scorer, had just four points. Both
teams shot about the same from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: This was a huge win for Granger,
which was coming off a disappionting loss to Woods Cross. The
Lancers now can feel like "giant killers."

Next: Jordan plays Lehi in the consolation game of the Jordan
tourney today.
Granger takes on Riverton later for the "title."

Dec. 12 - Bingham 44, Jordan 37

Story of the game: Ben Clifford scored 12 points and Shad
Sommerville had 11, including a pair of key free throws near the
end, as Bingham hung on to beat Jordan in the Miners' 100th
anniversary celebration game.

Jordan's best moment: Jordan Bernardo had 11 points and Kevin
Goldsmith 10 for the Beetdiggers, who suffered their first loss. This
game was close all the way. These teams could meet again in
post-season.

Bingham's best moment: The contest attracted a capacity crowd,
including several players from Bingham's former teams. It was a
hard-fought defensive battle and the Miners made the key plays in
the final quarter.

Statistical notes: Bingham led 14-11 at halftime. The teams found
their offenses a bit more in the second half. The Miners made just
4-8 free throws, so it was a good idea for Jordan to foul near the
end. This time, Bingham made the shots.

What we learned from this game: This was a good idea for
Bingham and the crowd had a clear affect on the game's outcome.
This felt like a playoff contest.

Next: Jordan is off until its two-day tournament at home next
weekend.
Bingham will play Davis Tuesday (Dec. 16).

Dec. 9 - Jordan 71, Murray 62

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 20 points as Jordan
took the lead with a big second quarter and held off Murray in a
non-region game filled with plenty of offense.

Jordan's best moment: Bernardo has been Jordan's most
consistent scorer. He hit several mid-range jumpers as the
Beetdiggers outscored Murray 21-11 in the second quarter. The
Diggers also canned 13-18 free throws, which was enough to hold
off the Spartans' comeback.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans are about offense, and Ken
Masic came through again with 19 points, which means opponents
can't double-team Markus Duran, who had 14. John Hunt put it 15
for Murray, giving the Spartans plenty of outside threats.

Statistical notes: There were 13 three-point baskets in this game -
seven by Jordan, six by Murray. Curt Follett had 12 points for Jordan;
Colton Burgon dropped in 10.

What we learned from this game: This was a good win over what
might be a solid 4A team eventually. However, until Murray learns
how to play defense, it won't develop into that "solid" team.

Next: Jordan travels to take on Bingham Friday (Dec. 12). Murray
plays host to
Taylorsville on Dec. 16.

Dec. 5 - Jordan 69, Judge Memorial 55

Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 26 points and Colton
Burgon dropped in 23 as Jordan built a first-half lead and kept
Judge Memorial at bay in this non-region game.

Jordan's best moment: This was Bernardo and Burgon's best
games this season. The Beetdiggers outscored Judge 22-11 in the
second quarter and had a 35-22 advantage.

Judge Memorial's best moment: The Bulldogs figured out
something at halftime, as they cut Jordan's lead in half. Peter
Dewtang had 13 points, Stallon Salidvar 12 and Oliver Hughes 11.

Statistical notes: Jordan had just one three-point basket, but
connected on 20-25 free throws, which was one of best
percentages of any high school so far this season.

What we learned from this game: Jordan built its record to 3-0 by
winning in a traditionally tough venue - Judge. The rest of the
preseason, however, becomes even more difficult.

Next: Jordan returns home to take on Murray on Dec. 9. Judge goes
to
Highland the same evening.

Dec. 3 - Jordan 56, Davis 52

Story of the game: Curt Follett scored 23 points and Jordan
Bernardo added 12 as Jordan benefited from a huge foul
discrepancy and handed Davis its first regular-season loss in 27
games.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers took a 26-22 halftime
lead. You would figure that the third quarter was when Davis would
make its move, but Jordan actually expanded the lead to 40-33 and
held off the Darts comeback in the fourth.

Davis' best moment: This was the season opener, and Davis isn't
the same team as last year, so the streak doesn't mean as much.
Daniels led the way with 12 points, while Nye and Larabee added
10.

Statistical leaders: Jordan helped fuel the Darts' comeback by
making just 20-34 free throws. Davis also hit six three-point
baskets, compared to none for Jordan. The Diggers should feel
fortunate to take the win on the Darts' home floor.

What we learned from this game: This was a big win for Jordan,
which is now 2-0. This was a good confidence-builder for the
Diggers, who have won a pair of close games..

Next: Jordan travels to another tough venue - Judge Memorial - on
Friday (Dec. 5). Davis plays at Logan Dec. 9.

Nov. 26 - Jordan 60, Park City 58

Story of the game: Colton Burgon scored 20 points and Jordan
Bernardo added 16 as the Beetdiggers shook off a Park City rally to
edge the Miners in the non-region opener for both teams.

Jordan's best moment: Jordan built a 30-20 halftime advantage
and then, after Park City rallied to take the lead, found something
within itself to rally back for the win. This was a good season opener
for both teams, and entertaining for the fans.

Park City's best moment: Tony Epperson scored 20 points for Park
City, but nobody else was in double figures. The Miners outscored
Jordan 20-9 in the third quarter, so apparently the coach's halftime
talk worked.

Statistical leaders: Both teams shot decently from the free-throw
line. Jordan was 18-24, while Park City hit 16-23. Kevin Goldsmith
had 13 points for the Diggers.

What we learned from this game: This was a 5A school playing a
3A school at home, and it was a two-point game. Any win is a good
one, and character is often built in close games, but Jordan's next
game will be a lot tougher.

Next: Jordan travels to play at Davis on Dec. 3. Park City goes to
Logan and takes on the Grizzlies the same night.
