Jordan looks to improve by playing tough teams

The Jordan boys' basketball team felt a little left out following the 2007 regular season.

The Beetdiggers' 12-9 overall record and fourth-place finish in Region 2 wasn't enough to earn them a spot
in the state tournament. Ending the season on a four-game losing streak didn't help, but this year, the state
tournament will host four teams from Region 2.

It's a cushion the Beetdiggers are hoping they won't need. In order to make that happen, coach
Rob
Geertsen
has scheduled what he calls "one of the toughest preseason schedules in the state."

That couldn't be more true. Jordan will play four teams who finished at the top of their respective regions
last year in the opening weeks of the season, including Davis, Judge, Murray and Bingham.

"We may take our lumps early on," said Geertsen. "But I want to prepare us for league and for state."

The Beetdiggers are off to a good start following a narrow 60-58 win over Park City on Nov. 26. They were
led by returning starter
Colton Burgon who posted 20 points in the victory. Jordan football team members
Cory Hunt and Steven Morgan have also quickly made their transition into basketball, and varsity newcomer
Kevin Goldsmith posted a promising 13 points against the Miners.

The Beetdiggers will also be led by the experience of seniors
Curt Follett, last year's leading three-point
shooter
Evan Mero and Ryan Corlett.

It's a lineup Geertsen is convinced will make it back to the state tournament and have a shot at a region title.

"We were the odd boys out last year," said Geertsen. "But we've got the type of team that should contend.
"We've got a good balance."
