Feb. 26 - Morgan 73, Juan Diego 44

Story of the game - Braden Saunders scored 22 points and
Morgan ended its season on a high note, finishing in fifth place by
whipping Juan Diego at the 3A state tournament.

Juan Diego's highlights - The Soaring Eagle trailed 34-15 at
halftime, but bounced back in the third period and make it a game
again. Ajay Pizza ended his prep career with a 16-point effort.

Morgan's highlight - The Trojans dominated the fourth quarter to
make the score look worse than it was. Scott Clark added 15
points and Morgan celebrated for at least the last four minutes.

Statistical notes - Juan Diego gave up 29 points in the final
period, and coach Sonny Tangaro emptied the bench. Trevor
McFalls didn't play and that hurt.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego finished in sixth
place, but clearly peaked too early this season. When the team
wasn't inspired, the defensive effort just wasn't there.

Feb. 25 - Hurricane 60, Juan Diego 49

Story of the game - Jaden Seeley scored 16 points and led an
inspired Hurricane team to a big first-half lead en route to a win
over Juan Diego in the 3A state tournament at Utah Valley
University.

Juan Diego's highlights - The Soaring Eagle knew this would be
a difficult matchup and fell behind 23-9 at halftime. The offense
picked up after that and played well, but couldn't get much closer.
Ajay Pizza had 11 points and Brian Curran 10.

Hurricane's highlight - The Tigers were anxious to avenge a loss
in the 3A football title game, and that was obvious from the
beginning. Eleven different players scored and Hurricane made
16-20 free throws to hang on to the win.

Statistical notes - Juan Diego shot just 1-21 in the first half, and
tried to make up for it by driving to the basket after that. The
Soaring Eagle ended up shooting 31 free throws. Coach Sonny
Tangaro emptied the bench and 11 players scored.

What we learned from this game - The loss dropped Juan
Diego into the losers bracket, and showed again that the team
doesn't seem to be playing with the heart it had when it won
seven straight games.

Feb. 20 - Juan Diego 44, Richfield 37

Story of the game - Ajay Pizza scored 15 points and Jalin Ames
came off the bench and added seven points and seven rebounds
as Juan Diego rallied to beat Richfield in the first round of the 3A
state tournament.

Juan Diego's highlights - Pizza and Ames led a 7-0 run to start
the third quarter that helped Juan Diego erase an 18-15 halftime
deficit. Morgan Hesleph had an off night on offense, but played a
big role in forcing 20 Richfield turnovers.

Richfield's highlight - The Wildcats jumped to a 7-2 lead and led
until early in the third period. Tyler Thomas led Richfield with 12
points. Eric Peterson and Robert Torgerson also had good
games and finished with seven each.

Statistical notes - Juan Diego shot 16-43 (37 percent) for the
game, and won the rebounding battle 31-29.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego had lost three of
its previous four games and coach Sonny Tangaro was worried.
The Soaring Eagle elevated its defense in the second half and
that was the difference.

Feb. 12 - Ben Lomond 51, Juan Diego 33

Story of the game - Marco Perez led a balanced scoring attack
with 15 points as Ben Lomond blanked Juan Diego in the first
quarter and embarrassed the Soaring Eagle in a Region 11
game.

Juan Diego's highlights - There were few. This was the team's
"Senior Night" and they weren't ready to play, falling behind 20-0
in the first quarter. The Soaring Eagle got a brief spark after that,
but couldn't make up the difference and lost its second straight
game.

Ben Lomond's highlights - This had to be one of the Scots'
biggest wins. It put an exclamation point on what was a decent
season for them. Andy Hopson had 13 points and Dalton Zundel
11.

Statistical notes - Juan Diego's 33 points was its lowest since
the Lone Peak game. It did narrow the gap to 14 points at
halftime, but never got any closer.

What we learned from this game - Usually, "Senior Night"
sparks the home team into playing better, but not on this night.
The Soaring Eagle still finished in second place in region, but
goes into the 3 state tourney having lost three of four games.
There is an eight-day break to get it back together.

Feb. 10 - Morgan 80, Juan Diego 70

Story of the game - Casey Evans scored 22 points and Braden
Saunders had 21 as Morgan rallied to beat Juan Diego with its
best offensive showing in two months.

Juan Diego's highlights - Juan Diego started well, taking a 15-8
lead after the first quarter but then couldn't stop the Trojans.
Instead of playing defense, the Soaring Eagle tried to keep up
and Mark Krueger had a season-high 20 points.

Morgan's highlights -The Trojans scored 27 points in the second
quarter, grabbed a nine-point halftime lead and had all the
momentum in front of its home crowd. It didn't stop either as they
hit 75 percent of their free throws and claimed the big win.

Statistical notes - Morgan shot 27-36 from the free-throw line.
Juan Diego was just 11-20. Ajay Pizza had 18 points Logan
Mortensen 12 (all on three-pointers). The 80 points given up was
easily Juan Diego's season high. Morgan's passing was sharp
as it was credited with 18 assists on 25 baskets.

What we learned from this game - This was a disappointing
loss. It dropped Juan Diego from a tie for first place and the way
the team lost has to concern coach Sonny Tangaro.

Feb. 5 - Juan Diego 57, Bear River 39

Story of the game - Logan Mortensen scored 14 points and
Morgan Hesleph added 10 as Juan Diego buried Bear River with
a big first quarter and earned the Region 11 victory.

Juan Diego's highlights - The Soaring Eagle started hot, building
a 22-12 first-quarter advantage end Bear River's upset hopes
early, and then played good defense after that. Mortensen and
Hesleph opened up the game with good perimeter shooting.

Bear River's highlights - The Bears hadn't won a game all
season, but have shown improvement. Aaron Black got into the
scoring column for the first time in over a month with a team-high
nine points.

Statistical notes - Juan Diego shot 48 percent from the field;
Bear River was at 31 percent. Ajay Pizza was the obvious focus of
the Bears' defense, but still scored nine points. James
Russell-Field at a season-high (to date) five points.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego got back on the
winning track. The Soaring Eagle swept the season series and
its two biggest wins have been against Bear River. Judge won,
too, so there still is a tie for first place and Judge has the easier
schedule.

quarter as Judge Memorial downed Juan Diego to create a tie on
top of Region 11.

Juan Diego's highlights - The Soaring Eagle fell behind early,
and coach Sonny Tangaro replaced the entire starting lineup. A
few minutes later, they returned and started a run that got them
back into the game. Mark Krueger had a nice game with 14 points.

Judge's highlights - The Bulldogs were ready to play and started
a 10-0 spurt in the first quarter to take a big lead, which they never
relinquished. Whitt had a game-high 15 rebounds, including a

period. Logan Mortenson added 14 points and Ajay Pizza had 13.

Grantsville's highlights - The Cowboys got balanced scoring
from Josh Harrison, Caleb Nesbitt and Ben Tripp and trailed only
33-29 going into halftime. Harrison and Dalen Erickson also
nailed a couple of three-pointers each.

Statistical notes - Mortenson had three of Juan Diego's six
three-point baskets. Tripp's 10-point effort was his best since the
second game of the season. The loss ended a three-game win
streak at home.

was 7-14. Juan Diego made just 14 baskets. Ajay Pizza had 10

Dec. 30 - Juan Diego 54, Oxnard JV 33

Story of the game: Morgan Hesleph scored a season-high 19
points as Juan Diego ended the Logan CVE tournament on a
high note with a convincing victory over the JV team from Oxnard,
Calif.

Juan Diego's highlights: The Soaring Eagle led the entire game,
jumping to a 16-4 first-quarter lead. Hesleph got hot on the third
period, scoring 10 of his points, and the team piled it on. Ajay
Pizza finished with 15 points and Mark Krueger had 10.

game later that night, so it fielded its younger players against
Juan Diego, and it put together a nice rally in the second period.
Russel Balan was the top scorer with 12 points.

Statistical notes: Juan Diego's free-throw shooting improved,
except for Trever McFalls, who was 0-2. Hesleph hit back-to-back
threes in the third period. Coach Sonny Tangaro emptied the
bench.

What we learned from this game: A win is a win, regardless of
the opponent and Juan Diego felt it played well in this
tournament, despite going 1-2.

Links: There was no local media coverage of this game, and it
was not reported by anyone. Information was obtained from Juan
Diego.

Dec. 29 - San Bernardino, Calif. 72, Juan Diego 69

Dec. 28 - Bingham 57, Juan Diego 48

Story of the game: Ben Clifford scored 15 points and Ty Hannay
had a season-high 13 as Bingham pulled away from Juan Diego
in the middle two quarters and hung to claim the first-round win at
the Logan Holiday Classic.

Juan Diego's highlights: The Soaring Eagle was within one point

Statistical notes: Juan Diego is now 0-3 against 5A schools.
Hannay had three treys for Bingham. Pizza, Brian Curran and
Logan Mortensen had one each for Juan Diego. Both teams shot
very well from the free-throw line.

5A school, and the score was probably not indicative of
Bingham's dominance. Pizza, however, proved he can play with
the big boys.

Peak opened a lead in the third quarter and hung on to beat Juan

Knights, who hit 15-19 free throws, many down the stretch, to
claim the win.

points was a season low (to date) for Lone Peak, which
remained unbeaten.

Juan Diego was just 3-6. Both teams had three treys. Skyline led
17-15 at halftime.

What we learned from this game:  Juan Diego shut down
Skyline's usual scorers, but the Eagles had a couple others step
up. So far, Juan Diego is beating the smaller schools and putting
up good battles in losing efforts against the bigger ones.

Dec. 8 - Juan Diego 75, Layton Christian 63

Story of the game: Ajay Pizza scored 25 points as Juan Diego
pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Layton Christian in what
became a free-throw shooting contest.

Juan Diego's highlights: The game was tied 60-60 in the final
period and Juan Diego ended the game on a 15-3 run. There
were 65 free throws shot during the game. Morgan Hesleph had
17 points and Logan Mortensen 15.

Layton Christian's highlights: Isaac Pedroza led Layton Christian
with 19 points as the Eagles suffered their first loss of the
season. Micah Shore had 14 points and Hardy Weissohn 13.

Statistical notes: Juan Diego connected on 26-35 free throws,
while Layton Christian hit 20-30. The 75 points was - by far - a
season high for Juan Diego. Last year, the Eagles came to Juan
Diego and won in a blowout.

What we learned from this game: This was a good win by Juan
Diego over a team most people don't know anything about. Juan
Diego is 3-1, but the schedule gets more difficult.

Dec. 5 - Juan Diego 63, Manti 54 (OT)

Story of the game: Ajay Pizza scored 22 points and Juan Diego
rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime, and then overtook
Manti to claim its second win at the 2A/3A preview tournament in
Richfield.

Juan Diego's highlights: The Soaring Eagle fell behind in the
third period, but came back to force overtime. Juan Diego then
outscored Manti 17-8 in the extra session. Morgan Hesleph had
17 points and Logan Mortensen 12.

Manti's highlights: The Templars put up a good fight, and
outscored Juan Diego 15-7 in the third quarter to take a 37-33
lead. Kyle Moore led the way with 17 points. Walker Schaffer had
13.

Statistical notes: Juan Diego won it from the free-throw line,
hitting 25-31 shots. Manti was just 8-13. Hesleph had a pair of
three-pointers for Juan Diego.

What we learned from this game: The Soaring Eagle won this
pressure-packed game, which was not an easy task. If they had
an all-tourney team, Pizza would have been a good choice.

Dec. 4 - Juan Diego 52, Richfield 40

Story of the game: Ajay Pizza scored 16 points and Morgan
Hesleph added 13 as Juan Diego built a big lead and then held
off the hometown Richfield team in the first day of the 2A/3A
preview tournament.

Juan Diego's highlights: The Soaring Eagle  built a 30-14
halftime lead and then avoided a serious Richfield comeback.
Pizza showed some outside shooting ability with a pair of
three-pointers. Logan Mortensen added 11 points.

Richfield's highlights: The Wildcats cut the margin to eight points
in the third quarter with a tough defense that held Juan Diego to
six points in that time period. David Bean had 10 points for
Richfield.

Statistical notes: Richfield had a big foul advantage, hitting 12-20
free throws, while Juan Diego was just 2-3. Bean had Richfield's
only three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: The 3A beat the 2A team on its
home court, which is not an easy thing to do.

Dec. 1 - Lehi 55, Juan Diego 48

Story of the game: Zach Stanley led a balanced scoring attack
with 15 points as Lehi opened its basketball season by taking an
early lead and holding off Juan Diego in a non-region game.

Juan Diego's highlights: After falling behind 19-12, the Soaring
Eagle stayed right with the home team. Morgan Hesleph drained
five treys and was Juan Diego's top scorer. Ajay Pizza added 13.

Lehi's highlights: The Pioneers developed a nice inside-outside
scoring threat, as center William Walker added 14 points and
Ryan Christofferson had 11. Lehi nailed five treys and shot
decently from the free-throw line to hang on to the win.

Statistical notes: Lehi was 10-15 from the FT line; Juan Diego
was 7-9. Walker played a key role in the fourth quarter. He also
led the team in rebounding.

What we learned from this game: Juan Diego showed some
athleticism in this game, especially Pizza, who caused Lehi fits in
the first half. In the end, though, Walker made the difference.
