Nov. 19 - Juan Diego 12, Hurricane 10

Story of the game - Bruce Nix caught a "Hail Mary" 31-yard
touchdown pass from QB Cody Stevenson as time expired as
Juan Diego rallied to beat Hurricane and capture its second
straight 3A state football championship at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle led until
Hurricane scored with 48 seconds left. Stevenson took Juan
Diego downfield with short passes, and then lofted his final pass
that Nix grabbed among two defenders. The rest of the team then
stormed the field.

Hurricane's best moment - The Tigers' offense scored their only
touchdown on a 9-yard run by Adam Long, and they thought they
had won the game. The loss marked the second straight year
they dropped the title game on the final play.

What we learned from this game - Hurricane has been in the
title game five times and has yet to win. Later, a poll among
Deseret News sports writers tabbed this one of the three best
games of the season.

Next - Juan Diego finished with a 13-1 record. Hurricane was
11-3.

Nov. 12 - Juan Diego 35, Wasatch 14

Story of the game - RB Tana Vea rushed for 183 yards and
scored three touchdowns as Juan Diego dominated the second
half and reached the 3A championship game for the second
straight year.

Juan Diego's best moment - QB Cody Stevenson threw
touchdown passes on the Soaring Eagle's first two possessions
to get off to a fast start. The defense held Wasatch in check in the
second half, limiting the Wasps to zero points.

Wasatch's best moment - QB Payton Davis provided the majority
of the Wasp's offense, but handed the ball to teammate Mike
Davis for Wasatch's two touchdowns. The Wasps were within
21-14 at halftime.

What we learned from this game - The game was in doubt until
the fourth quarter. Juan Diego was also hurt by the loss to
Keegan Andersen, who broke his leg and will be out for the title
game.

Next - Juan Diego advanced to play Hurricane in the 3A
championship next week. Wasatch is done for the season.

Nov. 6 - Juan Diego 28, Cedar City 3

Story of the game - Tana Vea rushed for 135 yards and the Juan
Diego defense forced five turnovers, and that was enough to turn
back Cedar and move the Soaring Eagle into the 3A semifinals.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle led 14-3
entering the fourth quarter. Vea gave Juan Diego some breathing
room with a 13-yard run, and then Dan Jimenez returned an
interception 15 yards for a score.

Cedar's best moment - QB Jackson Carter's 31-yard run on a
fourth-down play led to Karson Newville's 35-yard field goal early
in the second quarter. Cedar did move the ball at times, but hurt
itself with turnovers.

What we learned from this game - Cedar's three points was the
first points given up by Juan Diego in four games. This game was
more difficult than the score indicated.

Next - Juan Diego will play Wasatch in one 3A semifinals. Cedar
finished the season 7-5.

Oct. 30 - Juan Diego 56, Juab 0

Story of the game - Cody Stevenson and Keegan Anderson
hooked up on several long-yardage pass plays as the Juan
Diego defense held Juab in check as the Soaring Eagle whipped
the Wasps in a 3A playoff game.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle dominated.
Stevenson completed eight passes (five to Anderson) for almost
300 yards. Juan Diego led 42-0 at halftime. RB Lars Gunderson
scored three times.

Juab's best moment - Not sure there was one. The Wasps held
Juan Diego to just two second-half scores, but the "mercy rule"
was in effect. It had to have been a learning experience for the
visiting team.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego's defense is
awesome. The Soaring Eagle had shut out their last three
opponents, but the opposition will get tougher.

Next - Juan Diego plays host to Cedar City. Juab is done for the
season.

Oct. 23 - Juan Diego 34, Morgan 0

Story of the game - RB Tana Vea rushed for 173 yards and two
touchdowns and the Juan Diego defense came up with four
turnovers and that resulted in an easy win for the Soaring Eagle
and their fourth straight region title.

Juan Diego's best moment - Keegan Anderson got the first of his
two interceptions on Morgan's opening drive, and the Soaring
Eagle quickly went ahead. Juan Diego led 14-0 at halftime, but
Bruce Nix's long kickoff return helped put the game away as Juan
Diego scored two TDs in the third quarter.

Morgan's best moment - The Trojans kept trying to run the
football, but only gained 90 yards on 39 carries. QB Matt Largent
was 6-18 for 87 yards.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego coach John
Colosimo said after the Highland game that it may have cost the
team dearly. Turns out it may have rejuvenated them.

Next - Juan Diego opens the 3A playoffs at home against Juab.
Morgan plays host to Emery.

Oct. 16 - Juan Diego 55, Ben Lomond 0

Story of the game - RB Tana Vea scored three touchdowns and
the Juan Diego defense netted its second shutout of the season
in a Region 11 win over Ben Lomond.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle started slowly,
but scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to build a
28-0 lead. Lars Gunderson had a pair of TDs, and Juan Diego
was able to empty the bench.

Ben Lomond's best moment - The Scots were clearly
overmatched, as was expected based on the team's records.
Probably the biggest highlight was holding Juan Diego to seven
points in the first quarter.

What we learned from this game - Not much. It does set up a
big game next week that will decide the Region 11 title.

Next - Juan Diego plays host to Morgan. Ben Lomond goes to
Grantsville.

Oct. 9 - Juan Diego 34, Bear River 7

Story of the game - RB Tana Vea rushed for 87 yards and scored
two touchdowns, and fellow RB Lars Gunderson came back from
last week's injury to play a big role, as Juan Diego buried Bear
River in a Region 11 game.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle played inspired
after last week's loss. They took a 34-0 lead into halftime, and
held Bear River's offense in check until it was able to score in the
fourth quarter.

Bear River's best moment - This was not the Bears' "A" game.
They were dominated on the line all night. Dax Sedarholm's
50-yard finally put Bear River on the scoreboard.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego had to rise up
from last week's loss, and it appears is still a good candidate for
the 3A title, despite coach Colosimo's previous comment.

Next - Juan Diego travels to play Ben Lomond. Bear River goes to
Grantsville.

Oct. 1 - Highland, Idaho 28, Juan Diego 3

Story of the game - Highland QB Tanner Nielson led the Rams'
ball-control passing game, throwing for 198 yards and two
touchdowns, as they had no trouble beating up Juan Diego in a
non-region game.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle moved the ball
well at times, but then had breakdowns. The high point was
Jaron Bentrude's booming 46-yard field goal late in the game that
prevented the shutout.

Highland's best moment - The Rams led 14-0 at halftime, but put
the game ahead with a pair of scores in the third quarter, helped
by Juan Diego turnovers. Highland's defense allowed just 158
yards.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego got hurt, suffering
injuries to key players that had to leave the game. Their status
won't be known until later. After the game, coach John Colosimo
thought they might just become an "ordinary" team because of
the injuries.

Next - Juan Diego travels to play Bear River. Highland takes on
rival Pocatello.

Sept. 25 - Juan Diego 35, Grantsville 7

Story of the game - Cody Stevenson threw three touchdown
passes, including two long ones to Keegan Anderson, and Juan
Diego's defense shut down Grantsville in this Region 11 game.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle led 28-0 at
halftime, thanks to Stevenson's touchdown throws and a 52-yard
run by Lars Gunderson. Tana Vea had a 21-yard TD run in the
third quarter.

Grantsville's best moment - The Cowboys didn't score until the
fourth quarter, when Bridger Boman hit Jared Knight on a 30-yard
scoring pass to prevent the shutout.

What we learned from this game - This was homecoming for
Juan Diego, and all turned out well. The Soaring Eagle was never
pressured by the visitors and won their 20th straight game.

Next - Juan Diego travels to Pocatello to play Highland (Idaho).
Grantsville
plays host to non-region rival Tooele.

Sept. 18 - Juan Diego 34, Judge Memorial 12

Story of the game - Cody Stevenson scored twice and Lars
Gunderson returned a punt 51 yards for a touchdown, but it was
Juan Diego's defense that was the difference in its win over
Judge Memorial.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle held Judge to
144 total yards, with only 43 coming in the first three quarters.
Juan Diego sacked the Judge QB seven times. Juan Diego led
31-0 before the Bulldogs scored.

Judge Memorial's best moment - Judge QB Daniel Shiramizu
scored on 10-yard run in the fourth quarter, and then Paul Clark
added a 9-yard scamper. It was too little, too late.

What we learned from this game - This was the Region 11
opener for Juan Diego, and the defense made the difference. The
win was Judge's 19th straight.

Next - Juan Diego will play host to Grantsville in its homecoming
game.
Judge travels to play Ben Lomond.

Sept. 11 - Juan Diego 24, Springville 6

Story of the game - Lars Gunderson ran for 136 yards and the
Juan Diego defense forced five Springville turnovers and that
allowed the Soaring Eagle to claim the non-region victory.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle's offense wasn't
as impressive as past games, but the defense gave them short
fields for much of the first half, which ended 17-6. Gunderson
scored three times, including a short run on the first drive of the
second half.

Springville's best moment - Jordan Sumsion caught a 16-yard
pass from Aaron Gray for the Red Devils only score. It was
created by a 62-yard punt that pinned the Soaring Eagle deep in
its own territory.

What we learned from this game - Juan Diego improved to 4-0
on the season and had another great defensive performance.
The team also beat a larger school.

Next - Juan Diego will travel to Judge Memorial to start Region 11
play. Springville goes to Payson.

Sept. 4 - Juan Diego 55, Cyprus 17

Story of the game - Juan Diego QB Nathan Elorreaga threw three
touchdown passes and Lars Gunderson returned a punt 60
yards for a score as the Soaring Eagle built a big lead and
whipped Cyprus in a non-region game.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle dominated from
the start. Eleorreaga threw two TD passes in the first quarter, and
they were sandwiched by Gunderson's punt return. Juan Diego
benefited from big plays, as all TDs but one were scored from 10
yards out or longer.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates were playing from behind
right away. Jordan Wager threw TD passes to George Thomas
and T.J. Johnson. The offense, though, could not keep up with
Juan Diego's scoring.

What we learned from this game - This was another dominating
performance by the defending 3A champs and, for the second
time, it was against a 5A school. This team is starting to scare
other 3A schools.

Next - Juan Diego has another non-region game at home
against Springville.
Cyprus opens Region 2 play at Hunter.

Aug. 28 - Juan Diego 31, Park City 14

Story of the game - Reserve QB Nathan Elorreaga came off the
bench and led Juan Diego to three fourth-quarter scores as the
Soaring Eagle held off Park City in a non-region game.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle trailed at
halftime and lost QB Dylan Stephenson to an ankle injury. But
Elorreaga did his job, and the defense limited Park City to just
one yard of offense in the second half and that made the
difference.

Park City's best moment - The Miners played a tough, physical
game and had Juan Diego on the ropes for most of the first half.
Erik Walker had a 56-yard scoring run and Dylan Chenoweth
added a short run.

What we learned from this game -This was a tough game for
Juan Diego, which must prepare for difficult road games in the
future. The Soaring Eagle are the defending 3A champs and have
a "target" on their backs.

Next - Juan Diego returns home to take on Cyprus. Park City
travels to Delta.

Aug. 21 - Juan Diego 42, West 0

Story of the game - RB Tana Vea scored three touchdowns and
Lars Gunderson added two more, but it was Juan Diego's
defense that had the best game in an impressive shutout win
over West in the season opener.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle dominated the
game, especially the first half, rolling to a 35-0 lead. DB Keegan
Anderson led the defense with a pair of pass interceptions and
Trevor Greene returned a fumble for a touchdown.

West's best moment - There was little to report. New coach
Justin Spencer's first game was regrettable. West's offense didn't
reach midfield until the fourth quarter.

What we learned from this game - This was the first time Juan
Diego has played a 5A opponent, and the Soaring Eagle looked
great. Coming off a 3A state title last year, this result has to scare
the other folks in the region.

Next - Juan Diego travels to play Park City. West plays Tooele in
its home opener.
