went on a 20-0 run early in the game to move past Juan Diego in
a 3A semifinal game.

Feb. 20 - Juan Diego 46, Waterford 34

Story of the game: Pablo Coro scored 16 points and Juan
Diego's defense shut down Waterford's inside game and that
enabled the Soaring Eagle to pull away and upset the Ravens in
the first round of the 3A boys state tournament.

Juan Diego's best moment: The game was tied 21-21 at
halftime, but the Soaring Eagle limited Waterford to a single
basket in the third quarter, and then hit enough of their free
throws to prevent a comeback. A.J. Pizza added nine points.

Waterford's best moment: The Ravens' 6-10 center, Neal
Monson, drew Juan Diego's defense and was unavailable inside.
Without him, Waterford had no inside game. Five of the Ravens'
12 baskets were three-pointers. Monson and Vincent Otiede each
had 10 points.

Statistical notes: Waterford's 34 points was a season low. Juan
Diego was 11-16 from the free-throw line; Waterford was 5-10.
The game was played in front of a packed gym at Waterford.

What we learned from this game: Juan Diego advanced to the
3A quarterfinals. The region's top three teams moved on.

Dec. 6 - Juan Diego 73, Ben Lomond 60

Story of the game: Tyler Bauman had the hot hand, scoring 23
points, as Juan Diego built a big first-quarter lead and held off
Ben Lomond to win its first game of the season.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle led 28-8 after
one quarter and 40-17 at halftime. A.J. Pizza put in 17 points and
Mark Kruger had 12. It was - by far - Juan Diego's best offensive
output of the season.

Ben Lomond's best moment: The Scots figured something out at
halftime because they staged a good third-quarter rally, pouring
in 29 points and cutting the deficit to 10 points. Tyler Garder had
18 points and Marco Perez 16.

Statistical notes: It's interesting how much momentum can be a
factor at the high-school level. Once again, Juan Diego had nine
players score in the game.

What we learned from this game: It was good to earn that first
win, especially with teams like Skyline and Lone Peak on the
horizon. Coach Tangaro certainly saw improvement in his team
over the weekend.

Next: Juan Diego travels to Skyline on Dec. 12. Ben Lomond
travels to
Judge Memorial on Dec. 10.

Dec. 5 - Waterford 57, Juan Diego 46

Story of the game: How do you stop Neal Monson? The 6-10
center scored 20 points and helped Waterford build a big lead
that resulted in a comfortable non-region win at the Ben Lomond
tournament in Ogden.

Juan Diego's best moment: Not sure this was a winnable game
since 6-10 players are not too prevalent. But Juan Diego played
with Waterford in the second half, and got a team effort. Morgan
Hesleph led Juan Diego with 11, but eight others also scored.
That may pay off later.

Waterford's best moment: Monson is a decent player, and he
got help. Vincent Otiede added 13 points, Jordan Augustine had
11 and Michael Brazell nine. Waterford also hit three treys, so it
has developed a good inside-outside game.

Statistical notes: Monson was 8-8 from the line and the Ravens
took advantage of the foul differential. They were 24-33 as a team,
compared to 12-18 for Juan Diego.

What we learned from this game: This wasn't a bad loss.
Instead, it shows that Waterford is a good team that may end up
in the 3A state tournament. It also gives coach Sonny Tangaro an
idea how much Juan Diego needs to improve to reach that spot.

Next: Juan Diego takes on host Ben Lomond on its home floor
today (Dec. 6). Waterford will play Cedar later in the day.

Dec. 3 - Layton Christian 70, Juan Diego 45

Story of the game: Ryan Jessop scored 21 points and Antwain
Harvey had 16 as Layton Christian blew past Juan Diego with a
big third quarter and claimed the non-region road win.

Juan Diego's best moment: This was the Soaring Eagle's first
game, and there's plenty of room for improvement. A.J. Pizza led
the way with 18 points.

Layton Christian's best moment: This was the Eagles' first
game, too, and this is a talented team. Their offense and
quickness was too much for Juan Diego.

Statistical notes: Layton Christian had 30 FGs, compared to just
14 for Juan Diego. Leading 37-28, they outscored Juan Diego
17-7 in the pivotal third period.

What we learned from this game: Hey, at least Juan Diego won
the 3A football title. It may take a while for this team to perform to
their capabilities. They need to jell quickly, though, because the
schedule doesn't help.

Next: Juan Diego travels to Ogden, where it will play Waterford
Friday (Dec. 5) in the Ben Lomond tourney. Another game against
an unknown opponent will be Saturday. Layton Christian travels
to play in a tourney in Richfield.
