Nov. 21 - Juan Diego 21, Hurricane 18
Story of the game - Jaron Bentrude capped off an afternoon in which
he missed three extra points by kicking a 22-yard field goal with four
seconds left to lift Juan Diego to the 3-A state football championship
with a win over Hurricane.
Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle led most of the
game, but Hurricane rallied to tie it with 51 seconds left. Instead of
playing for overtime, QB Brian May hit Tana Vea on a screen pass and
the talented RB ran all the way to the 4-yard line, setting up the winning
field goal.
Hurricane's best moment - RB Gordie Dotson had just 53 yards on
17 carries, but he didn't give up. He was a key player in the Tigers big
rally, scoring the TD and the ensuing two-point conversion that tied the
game.
What we learned from the game - This was Juan Diego's game to
win, and the Soaring Eagle almost muffed it. Still, they made some
great plays, like Tyler Gunderson's 97-yard kickoff return that ended
the first half.
Next - The championship game ends the Utah state high school
football season.

Nov. 14 - Juan Diego 27, Park City 3
Story of the game - Juan Diego's offensive and defensive lines were
the difference. Tyler Morales led the way with 187 yards on the ground,
and the Soaring Eagle limited Park City to just 75 en route to a
convincing 3-A semifinal victory.
Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle's offense was having
problems in the first half, but the defense came up with fumbles deep
on PC territory on two consecutive drives, and Morales punched them
in for a 14-0 lead. That gave the team confidence. When the offense
did get going, the game was over.
Park City's best moment - The Miners couldn't move the ball. They
completed four passes and their rushing game was non-existant.
They had to be happy when Ben Portwood kicked a FG just before
halftime to make it 14-3. They were lucky to be that close.
What we learned from the game - Juan Diego is a special team, but
will have its hands full next week against Hurricane. The 3-A title is
theirs to win - or lose.
Next - Juan Diego advances to take on Hurricane at 10:30 a.m. Nov.
21 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Park City is done for the year.

Nov. 7 - Juan Diego 28, Logan 21
Story of the game - RB Tyler Morales rushed for 202 yards and the
Soaring Eagle dominated time of possession, and took advantage of
four Logan turnovers, en route to a 3-A quarterfinal win.
Juan Diego's best moment - Leading 13-7 at halftime, the Soaring
Eagle kept the ball on the ground much of the second half and
prevented Logan QB Jeff Manning to getting too many opportunities.
Juan Diego led the entire game, and played without injured RB Zach
Kinniger.
Logan's best moment - Manning finished with 277 passing yards -
206 in the second half. The turnovers, including three fumbles, were
Logan's undoing. The 21 points given up were the most by Juan Diego
all year, however.
What we learned from the game - Coach John Colosimo called the
win the biggest in school history. Juan Diego is still unbeaten, and
headed to Rice-Eccles Stadium for the 3-A semifinals. Beating the
defending champion probably makes the Soaring Eagle the favorite.
Next - Juan Diego advances and will play Park City in one 3-A
semifinal. Logan is done for the season.

Oct. 31- Juan Diego 24, Wasatch 0
Story of the game - Tana Vea, Tyler Morales and Keegan Anderson
scored touchdowns and Juan Diego took advantage of three Wasatch
turnovers to claim a home win in the 3-A playoffs.
Juan Diego's best moment - The unbeaten Soaring Eagle had
another great defensive performance, holding Wasatch without a point
and recording their fourth shutout of the season.
Wasatch's best moment - Trailing 21-0, the Wasps opened the
second half and put together a long drive that took over six minutes,
but they turned the ball over on downs.
What we learned from the game - Juan Diego beat Wasatch 31-0
earlier this season, and nobody expected the Wasps to pull the upset
here. Things will get tougher next week.
Next - Juan Diego plays host to Logan in a quarterfinal game.
Wasatch is done for the season.

Oct. 24 - Juan Diego 21, Delta 7
Story of the game - Zach Kinniger, Tana Vea and Tyler Bauman scored second-half touchdowns as Juan Diego rallied to beat Delta in
their Region 8 showdown and take the top spot.
Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagles trailed 7-0 at halftime, but a 72-yard TD run by Kinniger tied the game and gave Juan
Diego the momentum. Delta also committed two turnovers in the second half.
Delta's best moment - Wyatt Warnick connected with Wes Murdock on a 44-yard pass that set up the Rabbits touchdown, and had the
hometown crowd ecstatic. It appeared the entire town had turned out for the game.
What we learned from the game - From about Week 5, we've been looking forward to this game, and it did not disappoint. It even
attracted the Salt Lake media, which drove down to cover it.
Next - Both teams advance to the 3-A playoffs. Juan Diego will play Wasatch, while Delta takes on Union.

Oct. 16 - Juan Diego 58, Carbon 6
Story of the game - Jake Doughty and Frank Sutera returned interceptions for touchdowns and Mike Ramirez brought back a punt 75
yards for a score as Juan Diego handily beat Carbon in a Region 11 game.
Juan Diego's best moment - This team is about defense as much as offense, and the Soaring Eagle proved once again it can score at
any time. Eleven different players scored for Juan Diego, including two kickers. It was 29-0 after one quarter and 38-0 at halftime.
Carbon's best moment - The Dinos scored just once, and it was after Juan Diego had built a 58-0 lead. Jake Knighton caught a 54-yard
pass from QB Blake Najera.
What we learned from the game - If you're a fan attending Juan Diego games, you don't want to get out of your seat for a minute
because you could miss something. Obviously, the two best teams will meet next week. It will be interesting to see how many JD fans
make the trip.
Next - In the final regular-season game of the year, Juan Diego travels to Delta to decide the Region 8 championship. Carbon returns
home to play North Sanpete.

Oct. 10 - Juan Diego 56, North Sanpete 0
Story of the game - QB Brian May had 297 yards of total offense, and the Soaring Eagle's special teams scored two touchdowns to lead
their team to an easy victory over North Sanpete in a Region 8 game.
Juan Diego's best moment - On a cold night, the offense could stay on the sidelines and try to get warm. Zach Kinniger had a 91 yard
punt return, Mike Ramirez scored on a 66 yard punt return and Dan Jimenez had a 39-yard fumble return. By halftime, it was 49-0. The
reserves could play and the clock could run more quickly thanks to the "mercy rule."
North Sanpete's best moment - Tough to find one. The Hawks' offense didn't cross midfield until the third quarter. The best moment
might have been going into the locker room, where it was warm.
What we learned from the game - No surprises. Juan Diego can score at any time, and a lot of folks are just waiting for the Oct. 23
showdown at Delta.
Next - Juan Diego takes on winless Carbon at home. North Sanpete returns home to play Emery.

Oct. 3 - Juan Diego 41, Emery 6
Story of the game - QB Brian May passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as Juan Diego rallied from an early deficit to whip
Emery in a Region 8 game.
Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle scored 28 points in the second quarter as May connected with Tyler Bauman, Jacob
Doughty and Zach Kinniger on touchdown passes for a 28-6 halftime lead.
Emery's best moment - Emery gave its hometown fans something to cheer about in the first quarter. After that, it was all downhill.
What we learned from the game - Juan Diego was impressive again, especially on defense, which hasn't given up more than one
touchdown in any game this year.
Next - Juan Diego returns home to take on North Sanpete. Emery travels to Delta.

Sept. 26 - Juan Diego 42, Salem Hills 7
Story of the game - RB Tyler Morales rushed for 90 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Soaring Eagle defense scored on a
fumble return by Taylor Berg en route to an easy homecoming win over Salem Hills.
Juan Diego's best moment - Most of Juan Diego's scoring came in the second quarter, where it took a 35-0 lead into halftime.
Salem Hills' best moment - The team's only score game late in the game on Kolapa Wolfgramm's 4-yard run. Region 8 appears to be
two good teams, and three others, so the Skyhawks might be competitive in their first year.
What we learned from the game - The key to the Soaring Eagles' success has been its defense. Check out this quote from coach John
Colosimo: "It's still really hard to assess where the defense is at right now because we've pretty well shut down everyone we've played."
Next - Juan Diego travels to play Emery in another Region 8 game. Salem Hills goes to North Sanpete.

Sept. 19 - Juan Diego 35, Judge Memorial 7
Story of the game - The Soaring Eagles' defense played the starring role as Juan Diego whipped its Catholic-school rival 35-7 and
boosted itself as one of the state's top 3-A schools.
Juan Diego's best moment - Juan Diego dominated. In front of a packed crowd with fans from both schools, the Soaring Eagle limited
Judge to 76 yards and just three first downs. QB Brian May passed for two scores and ran for another. The defense also had a TD on a
fumble return.
Judge's best moment - It was a disappointing effort for the Bulldogs, who lost their third straight game. It's also the first time Judge has
lost to Juan Diego in three tries. Judge's only score came on a 28-yard pass from QB Chris Pell to WR Keenyn Walker.
What we learned from the game - Juan Diego is for real, especially its defense. The Soaring Eagle has outscored its opponents
188-19. Other 3-A schools, especially in Region 8, should be taking notice.
Next - Juan Diego has its last non-region game, playing host to Salem Hills in its homecoming game. Judge will take on Orem on its
homecoming.
Links - Both Salt Lake newspapers had reporters at the game, and it was broadcast on the radio. To read the Deseret News story, click

Sept. 12 - Juan Diego 31, Wasatch 0
Story of the game - Four games, four impressive wins. Zach Kinniger, Tana Vea, Eric Doughty and Dennis Larsen scored touchdowns
and the Soaring Eagle defense recorded its second straight shutout.
Juan Diego's best moment - Statistics were not available, but any time a team is shut out is impressive, especially on the road. Juan
Diego has played about as well as possible to date.
Wasatch's' best moment - There's not much to say. The Wasps have lost three straight games, and have not been competitive in any of
them.
What we learned from the game - Juan Diego is on a roll and has its long-term sights on the 3-A post season. The Soaring Eagle are
getting good play from their defense and offense.
Next - The Soaring Eagle return home to play rival Judge Memorial in a non-region game. Wasatch plays Ben Lomond at home.
Links - The Salt Lake media did not cover the game, but there was a Wasatch-oriented article in the Heber City newspaper. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. The Salt Lake Tribune did not report on the game.
Sept. 5 - Juan Diego 33, Cyprus 0
Story of the game - The Soaring Eagle was impressive again. Zach Kinniger rushed for 105 yards and two TDs and Tyler Morales had
98 yards and a pair of scores as Juan Diego handed Cyprus its second straight shutout loss.
Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle dominated, and that was especially evident in the first half. Juan Diego was able to
score quickly a couple of times as QB Brian May hooked up with Jacob Doughty on a 62-yard score and Morales had a 56-yard run.
Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates are obviously having trouble with their offense. They trailed 26-0 at halftime, and held Juan Diego to
just one second-half TD.
What was learned from the game? Juan Diego coaches have to be thrilled. Coach John Colosimo's club is routing opponents at home
and on the road. A win at Wasatch will set up an interesting game against Judge.
Next - Juan Diego travels to Wasatch in a non-region contest. Cyprus starts Region 6 action with a game at Olympus.
Links - There was no media coverage at the game. To read the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune's story,

Aug. 29 - Juan Diego 65, Grantsville 6
Story of the game - Tyler Morales ran for two first-quarter TDs as Juan Diego ran to a 28-0 lead and demolished Grantsville. Tyler
Larsen and Dennis Bauman also returned interceptions for TDs for Juan Diego.
Juan Diego's best moment - When you score 65 points, you have to figure there are going to be plenty of good moments. Zach Kinniger
also provided some exciting times with a 2-yard run and a 97-yard kickoff return.
Grantsville's best moment - There were few fine moments for Grantsville, but Forrest Stephenson did run 34 yards for a score late in
the second quarter to give the Cowboys some hope.
What was learned from the game - The Soaring Eagle are on a roll. This victory was dominating in their home opener and gives the
team added momentum. Everyone contributed to the win.
Next week - Juan Diego hits the road again to play at Cyprus in another non-region game. Grantsville will play Delta at home.
Links - The Salt Lake Tribune had a reporter at the game. To read the Tribune's game story, click here. To read the Deseret News
article, click here.
Aug. 22 - Juan Diego 24, West 6
Story of the game -Tyler Morales ran for two touchdowns and Brian May hit Zach Kinniger on a long scoring pass as Juan Diego's
offense got the Soaring Eagle off to a big lead, and the defense held West in check in the non-region win. It reversed a win by West last
year on what was JD's home field opener.
Juan Diego's best moment - The first quarter. The Soaring Eagle scored early, and often, and raced to a 21-0 lead. West was never in
the game. After a while, West got frustrated and you can't help but like to see that in your opponent.
West's best moment - The Panthers didn't have many. They shut down Juan Diego in the second half and QB Daniel Wray hit Alex Carr
on a scoring, but penalties and frustration dominated the action. This was not a clean game, and coach Steve Schreiter was likely glad
to get back to practice Monday.
What was learned from the game? Juan Diego has built itself into a 3-A football power, and there's not a lot of difference between 3-A
and 4-A schools. West learned it has to control its emotions as two of its better players were ejected from the game.
Next - Juan Diego has another game - against Grantsville. Ironically, West will play the team across the valley - Tooele - at the same
time.
