Jan. 3 - Judge Memorial 57, Juan Diego 27

Story of the game: Erica Martinez scored 21 points and Tina
Fakahafua had 15 as Judge jumped on Juan Diego early, rolling to
a big halftime lead and coasting to a win over their local Catholic
rivals.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle played a good
second quarter, staying even and trailed 30-15 at halftime. Judge
must have felt nervous because it came out hard in the second
half. Lauren Tigue led Juan Diego with eight points.

Judge Memorial's best moment: Judge led 18-4 after the first
quarter, and it was over. The Bulldogs expanded the margin in the
third quarter and then substituted freely to win their 9th straight
game.

Statistical notes: Martinez had three of Judge's four three-point
baskets. Judge was 15-25 from the free-throw line. Juan Diego
was 2-2. Juan Diego seems to win when it scores over 40 points.

What we learned from this game: Judge still dominates this rivalry
in girls basketball. While any loss is tough, it could be that Juan
Diego was playing the eventual 3A champion.

Next: Juan Diego takes on Ben Lomond at home Jan. 6. Judge
plays at Park City Jan. 9.

Dec. 30 - Union 64, Juan Diego 24

Story of the game: Sarah John scored 17 points and Union's
full-court pressure caused several turnovers during the second
and third quarters as the Cougars cruised the non-region win.

Juan Diego's best moment: Ashley Azarow connected on a couple
of three-point baskets early as the Soaring Eagle took a 12-8
first-quarter lead. But the team totaled 12 points for the rest of the
game. Azarow was the leading scorer with six points.

Union's best moment: The Cougars press started a rally where
Union outscored Juan Diego 45-10 during the middle two quarters.
Katie Richens and Brianna Nielsen added 13 points apiece.

Statistical notes: The 40-point loss was the worst so far this
season for Juan Diego. Alexis Benson had 12 points for Union.

What we learned from this game: This was a tough road game for
Juan Diego. The team was not ready for Union's press, and things
escalated quickly.

Next: Juan Diego travels to play Judge Memorial Jan. 3. Union has
Salem Hills at home Jan. 6.

Dec. 16 - Juan Diego 48, Waterford 23

Story of the game: Lauren Tigue scored 10 points and led a
balanced scoring attack, but it was Juan Diego's defense that
made the difference in its non-region win over Waterford.

Juan Diego's best moment: Waterford actually led 21-18 at
halftime, but Juan Diego outscored the Ravens 11-0 in the third
quarter and 19-2 in the fourth.

Waterford's best moment: The Ravens were still in the game and,
in fact, looking pretty impressive in the first half. Kimi Miyashima
lead the team in scoring with 11 points.

Statistical notes: Miyashima and Dino each had two
three-pointers. They were the only treys made by either team. Juan
Diego's 30-2 run and 25-point victory margin is by far its best this
season.

What we learned from this game: This was one of the biggest
game-changing events seen in local sports. The second half was
completely dominated by Juan Diego.

Next: Juan Diego is off until it plays at Union (Roosevelt) on Dec.
30. Waterford plays host to Salem Hills Dec. 18.

Dec. 11 - Cottonwood 37, Juan Diego 19

Story of the game: Angie Schwartz scored nine points and
McKenzie Anderson had eight to lead Cottonwood past Juan Diego
in a non-region game.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle could never find its
offensive rhythm. Brittany Coffer had nine points, and Lauren Tieg
added seven. No other player scored.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts took a 15-6 lead at
halftime, and then found their offense a little more in the second
half. Anderson hit a pair of three-pointers and Schwartz had one.

Statistical notes: The 19 points scored is a season low for Juan
Diego, and perhaps of any team within Utah. Coffer had three treys
- the only three-pointers made by either team.

What we learned from this game: Cottonwood earned its second
straight win and, ironically, both have been on the road. Juan Diego
suffered its third straight defeat.

Next: Juan Diego has a home game against Waterford Dec. 16.
Cottonwood returns home to play Hillcrest tonight (Dec. 12).

Dec. 6 - Bear River 50, Juan Diego 31

Story of the game: Jesse Jeppesen scored 23 points and pulled
down nine rebounds as Bear River pulled away from Juan Diego in
the second half to finish its Lady Bear Classic as the only
undefeated team.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle trailed 20-6 after
the first quarter, but then put the clamps on Bear River, cutting the
margin to 24-16 at halftime. Brittany Coffer led Juan Diego with 10
points.

Bear River's best moment: Besides the first quarter, the Bears
played well for most of the second half. They built the lead back
and then were able to play reserves. Felicity Jones added eight
points, seven assists and four steals.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot poorly from the free-throw line.
Juan Diego had trouble scoring for the second straight game.
Coffer had a couple three-pointers. In the other tourney game,
Cyprus beat Ben Lomond 80-50.

What we learned from this game: Juan Diego finished the tourney
1-2, and could have easily been 2-1. The team just needs to focus
on scoring more points.

Next: Juan Diego returns home to take on Cottonwood Dec. 11.
Bear River is 5-0 and plays at Mountain Crest Dec. 9.

Dec. 5 - Cyprus 34, Juan Diego 32

Story of the game: Kirstie Henriod scored 19 points and keyed a
fourth-quarter rally that allowed Cyprus to edge Juan Diego in the
second round of the Lady Bear Classic in Tremonton.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle stayed with
Cyprus, and even led 25-24 going into the final period. The game
went down to the final seconds.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates led 14-12 in a
defensive-minded first half, but both teams starting scoring more
afterward. Henriod had a couple of three-point baskets.

Statistical notes: In three games so far this season, Cyprus has
had a pair of two-point games, and has won both. That's a good
sign. Cyprus was 4-9 from the free-throw line; Juan Diego was 4-7.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus and Juan Diego are 1-1
in the tournament. In other tourney game, Bear River beat Ben
Lomond 62-39.

Next: Juan Diego will meet Bear River on the final day of the Lady
Bear Classic.
Cyprus will take on Ben Lomond.

Dec. 4 - Juan Diego 46, Ben Lomond 45

Story of the game: Jill Dino scored 20 points as Juan Diego held
off Ben Lomond's comeback and captured the win on the first day
of the Lady Bear Classic in Tremonton.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle led 23-19 at
halftime, then extended it to 37-27 by the end of the third quarter.
Lauren Tigue and Brittany Coffer backed up Dino with 11 points
apiece.

Ben Lomond's best moment: The Scots outscored Juan Diego
18-9 in the final period and almost pulled out the win. Eight players
scored for the team, led by Hughes with 10 points.

Statistical notes: Juan Diego held Ben Lomond to just four points
in the first quarter. Both teams shot just over 50 percent from the
free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: Juan Diego improved to 2-1 on
the season, and has two close wins, which is always good for
character-building. In the other tournament game, Bear River beat
Cyprus 57-39.

Next: Juan Diego takes on Cyprus. Ben Lomond will play Bear
River.

Dec. 2 - Juan Diego 51, Park City 46

Story of the game: Brittany Coffer scored 13 points as Juan Diego
pulled away from Park City in the fourth quarter and captured their
first win of the season.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle trailed 17-10 after
the first quarter, but rallied to take a one-point halftime lead. Coffer
then led the team to the win in the final period. Lauren Tigue and
Lee Hofmann-Instone had eight points apiece.

Park City's best moment: The Miners had a big first quarter, but
couldn't hold on to it. Laurel Kasel led Park City with a game-high
18 points. Carina Crosby added 12.

Statistical notes: Juan Diego connected on a respectable 17-25
free throws. The Soaring Eagle held Park City to just six points in
the second quarter.

What we learned from this game: It always feels good to capture
that elusive first win, and Juan Diego did it on the road. That made
the bus ride home a lot better.

Next: Juan Diego travels to Tremonton for the Bear River Classic
Dec. 4-6. Park City plays at Delta Dec. 4.

Nov. 25 - Logan 59, Juan Diego 25

Story of the game: Cami Jensen scored 18 points as Logan
opened its girls basketball season with an easy home victory over
Juan Diego.

Juan Diego's best moment: The Soaring Eagle was never in the
game. They trailed 49-15 after three quarters before playing even in
the final period. Adriana Rico had 10 points to lead the team in
scoring.

Logan's best moment: The Grizzlies led 28-9 at halftime, and then
went on a 21-6 third-quarter blitz. Logan emptied its bench in the
second half and nine players scored.

Statistical notes: Juan Diego was 8-22 from the free-throw line.
Rico hit the team's only three-point basket. Logan had four treys.

What we learned from this game: It was the season opener, and
Juan Diego simply played a better team. Since both schools are
3A, we have an idea what the competition might be like.

Next: Juan Diego travels to Park City on Dec. 2. Logan has a home
game against Mountain Crest the same night.
