advantage of Judge's cold-shooting problems to claim an easier
than expected win at the 3A state tournament.

the end of the first quarter, but that's when their problems started.
Judge scored just 10 points over the next two quarters and, at one

The 62 points Judge gave up was among the most this season.

Story of the game: Neal Monson scored 24 points, but it was
Vincent Otiede's rebound basket with 3.2 seconds left that lifted
Waterford past Judge Memorial and ended the Bulldogs' 41-game
Region 10 win streak.
Judge's best moment: The game was close throughout, and
Judge could have won if Stallon Saldivar's three-pointer that the
buzzer would have made it. Judge's offense wasn't the same as
usual. Oliver Hughes led with seven points.
Waterford's best moment: The Ravens kept their hopes of a
Region title alive with the win. Waterford played good defense, and

Judge's defense that made the difference in the game as the
Bulldogs held off Wasatch in a Region 10 game.

City was just 3-11. Schettler had four three-pointers. Zach Myaer

Judge's preseason schedule actually prepared it for region play.
Next: Judge travels to Wasatch on Jan. 13. Park City travels to
Waterford the same night.

three-pointers, which can also mean it didn't have a strong inside

What we learned from this game: Judge has been competitive in
each of its games this year - even the 5A schools. A win would have
been nice, but let's see what happens in region play now.

take on Hunter at home the same night.

but it slipped away in the second half. Dee Crandall had 16 points
for Judge. Saldivar also nailed three of the team's five

season, but this might have been its best showing. Tyler Baum and
Pablo Coro had season highs with 22 and 21 points.

Juan Diego scored 23 points in a frenzied fourth quarter to get back
into the game. Judge hit 17-29 free throws (58 percent), which is
low for the Bulldogs.

most fans thought it would be, but that can happen in rivalries.
Perhaps Judge was "looking down" on a 3A opponent after playing
so many bigger schools this preseason.
Next: Judge has a home game against Skyline Jan. 6. Juan Diego
takes on Lehi at home Jan. 7.

thrill the home crowd. Stallon Saldivar had 22 points, Dee Crandall
16 and Oliver Hughes 15.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed 22-12 after the first
quarter, but then started a rally that lasted the rest of the game.

Judge has given up, this season. Sam Wunderli and Xan Ricketts
had 12 apiece for Brighton. Miller and Cannon each had three treys.

Dec. 16 - Judge Memorial 46, Bountiful 43
Story of the game: Stallon Saldivar had a complete game, with 16
points, nine rebounds and five steals, as Judge rallied in the fourth
quarter to edge Bountiful in a non-region road game.
Judge's best moment: This was a big win for the Bulldogs as
Bountiful is expected to be a 4A power this season. Peter Dewtang
had 10 points and Dee Crandall nine for Judge, which trailed 32-29
after three quarters.
Bountiful's best moment: 6-7 Sean Carey led Bountiful with 12

season. Saldivar was Judge's outscoring threat with three treys, but
Danny Franks had two and Oliver Hughes one.

and 5A schools and should be well prepared for its 3A region
opponents.

Dec. 10 - Judge Memorial 62, Ben Lomond 41
Story of the game: Dee Crandall had 16 points, nine rebounds and
six steals, but this was a breakout game for Oliver Hughes and
Judge Memorial won handily over Ben Lomond.
Judge's best moment: After two straight defeats, this was a
necessary win and Hughes made a big difference, tossing in a pair
of three-pointers. If he scores, it makes Stallon Saldivar's life
easier. Crandall, meanwhile, was a man playing among boys.
Ben Lomond's best moment: The Scots always played decently,
but the deficit just kept growing. Tyler Garder had 11 points,
including three treys. Ben Lomond needed to make a move
immediately after halftime, but it was Judge who did that.
Statistical notes: The referees let the players play in this game, as
there were few fouls called and less free throws attempted than a
normal contest. Saldivar had 12 points for Judge. Peter Dewtang
added eight.
What we learned from this game: This was a carefully scheduled
game for Judge because it gave the Bulldogs a "break" in-between
playing 4A and 5A opponents.
Next: Judge travels to Bountiful on Dec. 16. Ben Lomond plays at
Roy on Friday (Dec. 12).

Dec. 9 - Highland 46, Judge Memorial 38
Story of the game: Taylor Brightwell led Highland's outside
shooting attack, scoring 14 points, as the Rams took an early lead
and held off Judge Memorial for their first win of the season.
Judge's best moment: The Bulldogs weren't able to cut loose until
the fourth quarter, when they put up 16 points. Dee Crandall led
Judge with 11 points. Stallon Saldivar had 10.
Highland's best moment: While the Rams were hitting their outside
shots, their defense frustrated Judge the entire game. Highland
held Judge to its lowest scoring output this season.
Statistical leaders: Highland hit 14-19 free throws, taking
advantage of every point. Through two games, the Rams easily lead
4A in scoring defense.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game, but
it was played at a tough site against a team that was able to play its
own style. Judge needs to find its own tempo.
Next: Judge returns home to take on Ben Lomond today (Dec. 10).
Highland plays Viewmont on Dec. 12.

Dec. 5 - Jordan 69, Judge Memorial 55
Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 26 points and Colton
Burgon dropped in 23 as Jordan built a first-half lead and kept
Judge Memorial at bay in this non-region game.
Judge Memorial's best moment: The Bulldogs figured out
something at halftime, as they cut Jordan's lead in half. Peter
Dewtang had 13 points, Stallon Saldivar 12 and Oliver Hughes 11.
Jordan's best moment: This was Bernardo and Burgon's best
games this season. The Beetdiggers outscored Judge 22-11 in the
second quarter and had a 35-22 advantage.
Statistical notes: Jordan had just one three-point basket, but
connected on 20-25 free throws, which was one of best
percentages of any high school so far this season.
What we learned from this game: Sure, Judge is 2-2, but look at
the quality of opponents. The Bulldogs non-region record doesn't
matter. When they go into region, they should be well prepared.
Next: Judge goes to Highland Dec. 9. Jordan has a week off before
playing at Bingham Dec. 12.

Dec. 3 - Judge Memorial 50, Cyprus 47
Story of the game: Dee Crandall scored 14 points, and Oliver
Hughes and Stallon Saldivar added 12 each as Judge held off
Cyprus and gave Jim Yerkovich his 600th career coaching victory.
Judge's best moment: This one almost got away, but the Bulldogs
hit 11-13 free throws, including a couple down the stretch, to hold
on to the win. Judge led the entire game.
Cyprus' best moment: Isaac Johnson had 13 points for the Pirates.
Marquis Newman and Weston Warr had 10 each. This was a much
better game for Cyprus. While they fell behind early, they rallied with
a big third quarter that tied the game.
Statistical notes: Charles Edmunds hit a couple of three-pointers
for Judge, the only ones the Bulldogs made. Afterward, there was
little fanfare by the team. If it wasn't for a member of the media
being there, it might have looked like it was forgotten.
What we learned from this game: Yerkovich has been coaching for
43 years, and has turned down some college coaching
opportunities. Check out Saldivar's quote: "We tried to keep our
minds off of it, but it was also motivation for us. But it was also kind
of a jinx tonight. We just want to win. It didn't matter where we got it."
Next: Yerkovich goes after No. 601 Friday (Dec. 5) at home against
Jordan. Cyprus travels to Taylorsville the same night.

commemorate Yerkovich's feat. To read the story, click here. To

Dec. 2 - Hillcrest 52, Judge Memorial 45
Story of the game: Curtis Blackmore scored 13 points and Kyle
Maughan added 12, but it was Hillcrest's defense and rebounding
ability that denied Judge coach Jim Yerkovich his 600th career
win.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies' defense was at its best in
the fourth quarter. Judge shot 32 percent for the game, but
just 17 percent in the final period. Shooting like that, it's not
possible to make much of a comeback.
Judge's best moment: Stallon Saldivar led the way with 20 points
and Dee Crandall had nine. Crandall had a lot more in the
Bulldogs' first game, and needs to take the pressure off Saldivar.
Judge scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, despite its shooting
problems.
Statistical leaders: No three-point baskets for Hillcrest. Also, Judge
hit just 18-32 from the free-throw line. Hillcrest won the rebounding
battle 27-20.
What we learned from this game: While the focus might been on
Yerkovich, it was Hillcrest's defense that shined. The Huskies
seemingly only had to guard two players as no other Judge player
scored more than four points.
Next: Yerkovich will go for the big win again tonight (Dec. 3) at
Cyprus. Hillcrest hits the road tonight, too, to play West Jordan.
Links: Both Salt Lake newspapers had reporters and
photographers at this game, probably hoping to catch Yerkovich
winning his 600th. To read the Deseret News story, click here. To

Nov. 25 - Judge Memorial 63, East 51
Story of the game: Dee Crandall scored 18 points and Stallon
Saldivar took up where he left off last season with 15 points and 11
rebounds as Judge built a first-half lead and held on to beat East in
both team's season opener.
Judge's best moment: The two teams were tied 11-11 after the first
quarter, but Judge blew out the Leopards after that, outscoring 22-9
in the second stanza and adding to it in the third. Four different
players hit three-point baskets for the Bulldogs.
East's best moment: The Leopards didn't quit. Despite being down
by 20+ points, they rallied in the fourth quarter. Christian Brown led
the way with 17 points.
Statistical leaders: Judge had a big advantage at the free-throw
line, hitting 17-25 shots, compared to 3-7 for East. Some of that
might have been because East had to foul near the end.
What we learned from this game: Judge lost some big talent, but
may have just reloaded. The Bulldogs' preseason schedule will tell
a lot, and so far it appears they could challenge for the 3A title
again. We'll see.
Next: Judge travels to play Hillcrest on Dec. 2. East has a home
game against Skyline on Dec. 3.
