   KEARNS BOYS BASKETBALL
Feb. 24 - West Jordan 78, Kearns 42

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 20 points as West
Jordan jumped to a big lead early and ended Kearns' hopes of
earning a Region 3 win this season.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars were never in this game, but
they competed better after the opening quarter. Of all the region
teams, it appears Kearns had the most trouble with West Jordan,
losing by 30+ points each time. Fatu Moala led with 13 points.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 22-4 after the first
quarter, and was able to substitute freely. West Jordan finished tied
for first place in the region. Jordan Weirick added 12 points and
freshman Jordan Loveridge had 10.

Statistical notes: Gallegos had a pair of three-pointers for West
Jordan, and appears as a favorite to win Region 3's MVP. Kearns
had four treys from different players.

What we learned from this game: It was a tough season for
Kearns, but next year the Cougars will be in a different region and
Coach Ostberg should have a better idea of his talent.

Next: Kearns is done for the season. West Jordan advanced to the
5A state tourney and will play Viewmont in the first round March 1.

Feb. 20 - Riverton 47, Kearns 34

Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 20 points and Riverton pulled
away from Kearns in the second quarter to claim the Region 3
victory.

Kearns' best moment: Fatu Moala had 14 points to lead the Kearns
offense, which was coming off one of its best scoring efforts of the
season.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 13-8 after the first
quarter and then extended it to 29-14 at halftime. The teams played
evenly after that. Riverton hit its free throws down the stretch. Ryan
Thomas added 13 points.

Statistical notes: Surprisingly, Kearns did not have a single
three-pointer, despite trailing the entire game.

What we learned from this game: The loss was Kearns' 11th
straight. The Cougars finish the season at home, where they
haven't won a game this year.

Next: Kearns plays host to West Jordan on Feb. 24. Riverton has
Copper Hills at home the same night.

Feb. 13 - Hunter 56, Kearns 46

Story of the game: Majik Givens scored a season-high 27 points
as Hunter rallied to beat Kearns and move into a tie for fourth place
in the Region 3 standings.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars bottled up Hunter's top scorer,
Jeff Poole, and stayed close throughout. Fatu Moala had 12 points
and Justyn Searle had 11 as Kearns had its best offensive output in
two months.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines trailed 10-6 after the first
quarter, but rallied to take a six-point halftime lead, and they
extended it from there. Givens had the hot hand, and was the only
Hunter player in double figures.

Statistical notes: Hunter hit 13-17 free throws; Kearns was just
6-13. The loss clinched Kearns' spot in the region cellar.

What we learned from this game: The Cougars face two region
powers at home to close out the season. Earning a region win
won't be easy.

Next: Kearns takes on Riverton at home Feb. 20. Hunter plays at
Copper Hills the same night.

Feb. 10 - Bingham 53, Kearns 38

Story of the game: Remington Peck scored 19 points as Bingham
broke open a close game with a big fourth quarter and earned the
Region 3 win.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars played one of their best
games of the season - for three quarters. Kearns had one of
best-scoring quarters of the season (18 points) and had a 28-25
halftime advantage. Fatu Moala had 13 points.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners trailed at halftime, and led
only 36-35 entering the final quarter, but outscored Kearns 17-3 in
the last eight minutes. Ben Clifford added 11 points.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot well from the free-throw line.
Kearns had seven three-pointers, led by Moala with three.

What we learned from this game: Kearns had a chance to pull off
a huge upset, but fell short. Only three more opportunities left.

Next: Kearns goes to Hunter on Feb. 13. Bingham plays at Copper
Hills the same night.

Feb. 6 - Copper Hills 48, Kearns 38

Story of the game: Tyler Faalogo scored 17 points and Preston
Stelter added 15, including the first eight of the game, as Copper
Hills downed Kearns in a Region 3 game.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars scored 22 of their 38 points in
the fourth quarter. Fatu Moala led with nine points, while three
others had six points.

Copper Hills' best moment: Stelter provided most of the offense as
the Grizzlies took a 10-2 first-quarter lead. It was 32-16 going into
the final quarter, and they hit 9-13 free throws to prevent the
Cougars' comeback from getting any closer.

Statistical notes: Kearns had just nine points at halftime. Stelter
had three treys for Copper Hills. Both teams shot well (about 70
percent) from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: The Cougars were never in this
game, although they made a nice rally at the end. Until the offense
does more, Kearns will have trouble winning games.

Next: Kearns has a home game against Bingham Feb. 10. Copper
Hills goes to West Jordan the same night.

Jan. 30 - Riverton 56, Kearns 39

Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 24 points - his best scoring
night since the season opener - as Riverton pulled away from
Kearns in the second half and earned a Region 3 win.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars stayed close, and played one
of their better games. Fatu Moala and Justyn Searle led Kearns with
eight points apiece.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 23-19 at halftime,
but outscored Kearns 18-9 in the third period to give themselves
some breathing room. Riverton hit 21-27 free throws, many of those
late in the game.

Statistical notes: Kearns was 8-16 from the free-throw line. Both
teams hit three treys. Friel had a pair for Riverton.

What we learned from this game: This probably wasn't a winnable
game for Kearns, but the Cougars played tough. The question now
seems to be whether Kearns will win a region game this year.

Next: Kearns is at Copper Hills on Feb. 6. Riverton plays at
Bingham the same night.

Jan. 23 - Hunter 46, Kearns 41

Story of the game: Jace Broadbent scored 11 points and A.J.
Patailii had nine as Hunter broke the game open in the third quarter
and then hung to beat Kearns in a Region 3 game.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars outscored Hunter 18-13 in the
final quarter, but it wasn't enough. Justyn Searle had 11 points to
lead the team in scoring.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines led 17-15 at halftime, but
then busted loose with a 16-8 run to take a 10-point lead. Hunter hit
enough free throws at the end to hold on to the win. Kevin Williams
added eight points.

Statistical notes: Hunter was 10-17 from the free throw line;
Kearns was 8-16. Both teams had a pair of three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: The Cougars don't have enough
offense to be a threat in Region 3. Unless something changes
soon, this team is headed for the cellar.

Next: Kearns goes to West Jordan on Jan. 27. Hunter plays host to
Bingham the same night.

Jan. 20 - Bingham 52, Kearns 26

Story of the game: Ben Clifford had 17 points as Bingham pulled
away from Kearns in the fourth quarter and captured this Region 3
game.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars have had offensive troubles all
season, but led 12-11 after the first quarter. Kearns faltered late.
Sammy Sweat led with nine points.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led after the first quarter and
had a 30-20 advantage entering the final period. They dominated
the fourth quarter, outscoring Kearns 22-6. Remington Peck added
10 points.

Statistical notes: All of Sweat's baskets came on three-pointers.
Kearns scored a total of 14 points over the last three quarters. The
Cougars' 26 points was a season low.

What we learned from this game: Kearns may not win a game for
the rest of the year if it continues to average less than 30 points
offensively.

Next: Kearns plays host to Hunter on Jan. 23. Bingham plays host
to
Copper Hills the same night.

game. To read the Deseret News story,

Jan. 16 - Copper Hills 43, Kearns 28

Story of the game: Myles Spencer and Steven Cordovia scored 10
points apiece, but it was the Copper Hills defense that won this
game, holding Kearns to a season-low point total.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars lost their third straight game
it's clearly the offense that is having trouble, averaging just 31.6
points during that stretch. Justyn Searle led with nine points.

Copper Hills' best moment: The game was tied 6-6 after one
quarter, but the Grizzlies got their offense going after that. Copper
Hills held Kearns to single digits in each quarter.

Statistical notes: Preston Stelter had nine points for Copper Hills.
Not many fouls were called as Copper Hills was 6-8 from the
free-throw line, and Kearns 2-6. Kearns is 0-4 at home this season.

What we learned from this game: This was both team's Region 3
opener and each is facing an uphill battle in region, but Copper
Hills has potential. Kearns seems headed for the cellar.

Next: Kearns goes to Bingham on Jan. 20. Copper Hills returns
home to take on
West Jordan the same night.

Jan. 13 - Hillcrest 41, Kearns 38

Story of the game: Kyle Maughan scored 14 points as Hillcrest
shook off Kearns' comeback attempt and claimed a road victory in
both team's final non-region game.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars made a nice comeback after
trailing most of the game. Justyn Searle had eight points, Fatu
Moala seven and Toby Thacker had seven, including a couple of
three-pointers.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies jumped to a 12-4
first-quarter lead, but Kearns whittled it down and then tied it with a
big third quarter. Curtis Blackmore added eight points and Hillcrest
made just enough free throws to hold on to the win.

Statistical notes: Hillcrest was 11-18 from the free-throw line;
Kearns about the same at 13-21. The game was tied 30-30
entering the fourth period. Moala had a trey for Kearns, too.

What we learned from this game: Both of these teams will likely
have trouble against their region competition, which starts Friday.
Playing good defense is the best way to earn a few wins.

Next: Kearns has its Region 2 opener Friday (Jan. 16) at home
against
Copper Hills. Hillcrest starts Region 3 play the same night
at
Jordan.

Jan. 9 - Lehi 54, Kearns 29

Story of the game: Will Walker led a balanced scoring attack with
13 points, but it was Lehi's defense that made the difference,
holding Kearns to a season-low point total in its non-region win.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars stayed even with Lehi in the
second quarter, but the Pioneers blew the game open in the third
period. Fatu Moala, Toa Afatasi and Justyn Searle had six points
each.

Lehi's best moment: The Pioneers' defense held Kearns to
single-digit scoring through the first three quarters, and led 36-17.
Corey Smith had 12 points, Ryan Christofferson 11 and Mula
Faleao 10.

Statistical notes: This was also Lehi's best defensive game this
season. Lehi hit just 8-17 free throws; Kearns was 7-10.
Christofferson had three treys for Lehi. Kearns did not have a
three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: The Cougars went up against a
good 5A team, and were beaten badly. That means there is a lot of
room for improvement.

Next: Kearns takes on Hillcrest at home Jan. 13 in its final
non-region game.
Lehi opens Region 4 play at home against
American Fork Jan. 14..

Dec. 30 - Kearns 68, Union 46

Story of the game: Toa Afatasi scored 15 points and Trevor Simper
had 13 as Kearns pulled away in the third quarter and earned a
non-region win at Union.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars led 32-23 at halftime, but
came out in the third quarter and outscored Union 27-6 to turn the
game into a rout. Naki Angilau had 12 as Kearns had a balanced
scoring attack.

Union's best moment: Union rallied in the fourth quarter, primarily
against Kearns reserves. T. Nelson led the way with 16 points in an
attempt to make the score more respectable.

Statistical notes: Kearns had four three-point baskets. Sammy
Sweat led Kearns with two. Kearns hit 10 of 13 free throws.

What we learned from this game: Kearns played a 3A team and
easily handled the road trip. The Cougars now have home games
until the region season starts.

Next: Kearns plays host to Lehi on Jan. 9. Union

Dec. 18 - Pleasant Grove 56, Kearns 41

Story of the game: C.J. Wilcox scored 19 points and LeSean Wilcox
added 12 as Pleasant Grove jumped on Kearns early, running to a
15-3 lead, and whipping the Cougars on their home floor.

Kearns' best moment: Toby Thacker scored 17 points, including
four three-pointers, for the Cougars. There was little good news
about this game. Kearns was outplayed, and it was evident right
away.

Pleasant Grove's best moment: The Vikings controlled the game
from the start. The two Wilcoxes were difficult for Kearns to defend.
After the first quarter, PG never let the deficit get closer than 10
points. It was a good road victory for the Vikings.

Statistical notes: Sophomore Cory McAllister had 10 points for the
VIkings. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line. PG was
7-14 and Kearns 9-17.

What we learned from this game: Road trips often bring teams
closer together, but there's no evidence that happened here.
Kearns has a long way to go to be among 5A's elite. At least
Thacker showed the Farmington trip was no fluke for him.

Next: Kearns is done until Dec. 30, when it travels to Roosevelt and
plays Union. Pleasant Grove goes to Logan to play in a tourney
there Dec. 27-30.

Dec. 13 - Mullen, Colo. 53, Kearns 39

Story of the game: Jack Osborne and Samson scored 11 points
apiece as Mullen pulled away in the fourth quarter and defeated
Kearns and capture fifth place in the eight-team Webb Toyota
Invitational in Farmington, N.M.

Kearns' best moment: Toby Thacker scored 13 points to the lead
the Cougars, who trailed just 39-33 after three quarters.

Mullen's best moment: Osborne is a 6-8 center who made the
all-tournament team and was a force in the middle. Samson was
Mullen's outside threat with three treys.

Statistical notes: Thacker made the all-tournament team. Texas
power Montwood won the tourney, beating Gallup, N.M. 55-45. Other
final-day scores were: Alamogordo 57, Farmington 55, and
Durango 69, Piedra Vista 51.

What we learned from this game: It was a good road trip for the
Cougars, although beating Piedra Vista isn't that impressive. Still,
Thacker proved himself and this trip might help the Cougars jell as
a team.

Next: Kearns plays its first home game Thursday (Dec. 18) against
Pleasant Grove.

Links: The Farmington Times had a reporter there, but there was
no information about this game. To read the Deseret News brief,

Dec. 12 - Kearns 60, Piedra Vista, N.M. 53

Story of the game: Toby Thacker scored 14 points and Fatu Moala
added 13 as the Cougars put forth a three-point shooting barrage in
the third quarter and won their first game of the season over Piedra
Vista, N.M., at the Webb Toyota Invitational in Farmington, N.M.

Kearns' best moment: Thacker and Moala had three treys apiece,
and they all came in the second half. Kearns 22-20 at halftime, but
blew it open to 43-33 by the end of the third period. The Cougars
then hit enough of their free throws to withstand Piedra's rally.

Piedra Vista's best moment: The Panthers made a nice comeback
in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough. Andre Romero and Ben
Herrera led Piedra Vista with 16 points apiece.

Statistical notes: Kearns made seven three-point baskets which,
coincidently, was the final margin. Other tourney scores Friday
were: Montwood (Texas) 60, Farmington 36; Gallup 72, Alamogordo
59; Mullen (Colo.) 65, Durango 43.

What we learned from this game: It was Kearns' first win and,
combined with a respectable first game, earned the Cougars some
respect locally. Last year, Kearns won two of three games.

Next:  Kearns advances to the consolation final against Mullen High
of Denver, Colo. Piedra Vista will play Durango.

Links: The Farmington Daily Times was there, and had a reporter
write a few paragraphs about the game. To access the article,

here and go to the bottom. To read the Deseret News brief, click

Dec. 11 - Farmington, N.M. 55, Kearns 47

Story of the game: Cody Conaway scored 19 points, including five
three-pointers, as host Farmington rallied in the fourth quarter
behind their home crowd and beat Kearns in the first round of the
Webb Toyota Invitational in Farmington, N.M.

Kearns' best moment: After trailing 15-5 in the first quarter, Justin
Searle and Toby Thacker engineered a comeback that eventually
gave the Cougars the lead. Searle finished with 14 points, while
Thacker had nine.

Farmington's best moment: The Scorpions were playing at home
for the first time this season, and their crowd came energized and
made a lot of noise. Farmington went on a 12-0 run in the fourth
quarter to take the lead it never relinquished.

Statistical notes: Shane McGrath had 16 points for Farmington,
which hit 8-10 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off Kearns.
Nine players scored for the Cougars. Other first-round scores
Thursday were: Alamogordo (N.M.) 52, Durango (Colo.) 48; Gallup
(N.M.) 64, Mullen (Colo.) 56 (OT); and Montwood (Texas), Piedra
Vista (N.M.) 28.

What we learned from this game: Kearns seemed to impress the
home crowd until the Cougars failed down the stretch. Coach
Ostberg claimed the team's inexperience is what caused it.

Next:  Kearns moves into the consolation bracket and will play
Piedra Vista, N.M. Farmington goes on to play Montwood.

Links: There was no report of this game by the Salt Lake media, but
the Farmington Daily Times had a reporter there. To read the Daily
Times' article,

Dec. 9 - Taylorsville 67, Kearns 53

Story of the game: Andrew Stephens scored 15 points and led a
balanced scoring attack as Taylorsville find enough offensive
firepower elsewhere to beat Kearns in a non-region game.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars fell way behind in the first
quarter, but played with the Warriors the rest of the game. Junior
guard Sammy Sweat had his best game of the season with 15
points, including four three-point baskets.

Taylorsville's best moment: This was a big game for the Warriors
because so many others stepped up to take the scoring load from
Jordan Edgington. Stevie McCloyn and Edgington backed up
Stephens with 12 points apiece. Daren Oakeson added 10.

Statistical notes: Taylorsville outscored Kearns 20-8 in the first
quarter, which eliminated doubt about this game. They outscored
the Cougars in the third quarter, too, which helped prevent a
comeback. Trevor Simper added 12 for Kearns.

What we learned from this game: It has been a difficult preseason
for the Cougars. Traveling to Farmington, N.M., to play there could
do a lot of good to this team.

Next:  Kearns plays in Farmington's tourney for the second straight
year - Dec. 11-13.
Taylorsville plays at Hunter on Dec. 12.

Dec. 5 - Granger 52, Kearns 35

Story of the game: Tre Musgrow scored 18 points and Granger
pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand Kearns its second straight
loss to open the season.

Kearns' best moment: Still not a good offensive showing for the
Cougars. They fell behind 10-4 in the first quarter, but rallied to
make it a game until the end.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers led just 29-23 going into the
fourth quarter, then found their offense and added 23 more to their
total. Austin Scott added 12 points for Granger.

Statistical notes: Scott was Granger's outside threat, putting in
three treys. The Lancers had a big advantage from the free-throw
line, likely because Kearns had to foul at the end.

What we learned from this game: The Cougars have played two
games and are averaging 36 points per game. That won't win many
games, even if you play great defense.

Next:  Kearns plays at Taylorsville Dec. 9. Granger is off until Dec.
16 when it will play host to Woods Cross.

Dec. 2 - Tooele 45, Kearns 37

Story of the game: Boone Baird scored 13 points, Tanner Stuart 11
and Jake Dalton 10 as Tooele took advantage of Kearns' shaky
free-throw shooting and claimed a non-region victory on its home
floor.

Kearns' best moment: Fatu Moala had 13 points and Justin
Thacker 11. Kearns only scored five points in the second quarter,
but then outscored the Buffs 12-6 in the third. Must have been some
halftime talk. Too bad it didn't hold up.

Tooele's best moment: This was a comeback victory. Kearns
actually led 29-28 entering the fourth quarter. That's where Tooele's
offense finally started going and outscored the Cougars 17-8.

Statistical notes: Kearns was 1-9 from the free-throw line. Tooele,
meanwhile, was 10-12. That's a home-court advantage
.

What we learned from this game:
Not much. Kearns is 0-1 and
must get used to playing road games, as it has just one home
game in the next month.

Next: Kearns travels to play Granger Friday (Dec. 3). Tooele has a
home game against Bonneville the same night.
