Oct. 31 - Syracuse 42, Kearns 18

Story of the game - RB T.J. Blickfeldt rushed for 137 yards and the
Titans turned four Kearns turnovers into scores en route to a
convincing first-round win in the 5-A playoffs.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars trailed 28-0 early in the third
quarter when QB J.R. Finai hit Fatu Moala on a 35-yard touchdown
pass. Kearns recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Alamoti
Vaenuku scored on a 5-yard run. That's as close as Kearns would get.

Syracuse's best moment - After a scoreless first quarter, Syracuse
took a 21-0 lead into halftime. Blickfeldt scored on a short TD run, and
also caught a scoring pass from QB Braden Hamblin, who also had a
short run for a score.

What was learned from the game - This is only the Titans' second
year as a school, and they had no trouble with Kearns. The Cougars
improved their record from the previous year and, with Finai just a
sophomore, seem poised for next year.

Next week - Kearns is done for the season. Syracuse advances in the
5-A playoffs and will travel to Pleasant Grove.

Oct. 23 - Kearns 35, West Jordan 12

Story of the game - Kearns RB Alamoti Vaenuku had his best game of
the season, rushing for 226 yards and two scores, as the Cougars
earned Region 3's No. 3 spot with a solid victory over West Jordan.

Kearns' best moment - Vaenuku had 124 yards and both of his TDs in
the first quarter as the Cougars took a commanding lead and never let
it get away. QB J.R. Finai hit Fatu Moala on a 22-yard scoring pass to
make it 21-0 at halftime.

West Jordan's best moment - Down 28-0, the Jags' offense finally
came to life. Damien Maestes, who had 75 yards on 20 carries, had a
TD run and QB Jace Rogers hit Tyson Udy on a short scoring pass with
about a minute left.

What was learned from the game - Kearns is a better position than
last year to pull out a playoff victory, but it will have to do it on the road.
The win also assured the Cougars of a winning season.

Next week - Kearns advances to play Syracuse on the road. West
Jordan is done.

Oct. 15 - Riverton 26, Kearns 21

Story of the game - RB Daniel Hoffman capped a six-minute drive with
a short TD run late in the game to lift Riverton to a comeback win over
Kearns and gained sole possession of second place in Region 3.

Kearns' best moment - QB J.R. Final rushed for 93 yards and two TDs.
One of his runs was a 71-yarder. The Cougars trailed by 13 points at
one time and rallied to take the lead.

Riverton's best moment - Leading 14-7, Tone Rich recovered a
Kearns fumble and scampered 98 yards for a touchdown that put
Riverton in command. Kearns had to play "catch up" after that.

What was learned from the game - The game went back-and-forth
and these teams are pretty close to equal. Both clubs will make the 5-A
playoffs, but this game likely made a big difference on who will host or
travel in the first round.

Next week - Kearns finishes the regular season at West Jordan.
Riverton travels to Hunter.

Oct. 10 - Kearns 7, Copper Hills 0

Story of the game - RB Alamoti Vaenuku rushed for 162 yards on 23
carries and the Cougars' defense held Copper Hills to just 150 yards of
offense en route to a shutout win in Region 3 action.

Kearns' best moment - RB Toa Afatasi had a 4-yard run for the game's
only score with 7:27 left in the second quarter. It was Kearns' first
homecoming win since 1996.

                KEARNS FOOTBALL - 2008

Copper Hills' best moment - The Grizzlies defense did hold Kearns to just seven points. QB Josh Soter completed 11 of  22 attempts for
82 yards. He also had 8 carries for 27 yards. He was sacked four times.

What was learned from the game - Kearns moved into a tie for second place with two weeks remaining. The Cougars are in good shape
for postseason, but need more wins to avoid playing a top seed on their home field (last like year).

Next week - Kearns has another home game against Riverton. Copper Hills plays host to West Jordan.

Oct. 2 - Bingham 42, Kearns 10

Story of the game - Jake Soffe completed 8 of 11 passes for 204 yards and the Bingham offense put together several quick scores to earn
the easier-than-expected Region 3 win. It was the Miners' fifth straight.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars' offense has struggled all season, so when Bingham finally earned a 21-0 lead, the game was
virtually over. Kearns scored on a first-half field goal and late TD by RB Alamoti Vaenuku.

Bingham's best moment - The defense dominated, holding Kearns to 28 first-half yards. Soffe had earned most of the headlines this year,
but he shared the spotlight here because Mike Edmunds and Matt Green used their talents to turn Soffe's passes into scores.

What was learned from the game - Kearns is a middle-of-the-pack team. The Cougars have beaten the lower-echelon schools, but have
been riddled by the better schools. It seems like a repeat of last year.

Next week - Kearns returns home to take on another "middle" team in Copper Hills. Bingham travels to Riverton.

Sept. 25 - Kearns 21, Hunter 12

Story of the game - Sophomore QB J.R. Finai grew up, throwing for 121 yards, including a 40-yard TD pass to Dominick Cagle in the
fourth quarter to lift the Cougars past Hunter in their Region 3 opener.

Kearns' best moment - RB Alamoti Vaenuku rushed for 129 yards on 17 carries, including an 80-yard TD run. Hunter stacked the line
trying to stop the run and dared Finai to try to win it. Assistant coach Justin Spencer said Finai "grew up." Coach Cosper called the last
pass "a beaut."

Hunter's best moment - The Wolverines' defense kept them in the game. The offense had just 26 second-half yards, but still had a
chance to win. Hunter's defense had two interceptions, and Finai's final TD pass was a fourth-down play.

What was learned from the game - Games between these two rivals are usually decided in the trenches and are usually close. This
game was the biggest scoring total (21 points) for Kearns this year. Hunter needs to find an offensive playmaker.

Next week - Kearns goes on the road to play region power Bingham. Hunter plays host to Copper Hills.

Sept. 19 - Skyline 35, Kearns 7

Story of the game - Marc Taufa rushed for 88 yards and Caleb Latteier had 75 more as Skyline's offense picked up the slack for the
injured Algernon Brown and routed Kearns in a non-region road game.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars trailed 14-0 at halftime and 28-0 by the end of the third quarter. The Cougars made it 28-7 when
Alamoti Vaenuku took a pitch in the flat and raced untouched 20 yards to the end zone. Vaenuku finished with 129 yards on 22 carries.

Skyline's best moment - The Eagles had 276 yards rushing, and controlled the offensive tempo. Brian Orr cinched the win when he
returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown

What was learned from the game - The Kearns defense gave up a season-high 35 points. Skyline was on a two-game losing streak and
faces top-ranked Alta next week. A win was necessary.

Next week - Kearns opens Region 3 play at home against Hunter next Thursday. Skyline plays at home against Alta in Region 2.

Sept. 12 - Kearns 12, Lehi 8

Story of the game - Fatu Moala intercepted two passes, and the Kearns defense recovered two fumbles, blocked a punt for a safety and
held Lehi on downs late in the game to salvage a 12-8 non-region victory. Moala also had a 60-yard punt return.

Kearns' best moment - Ahead 12-8, Lehi drove the ball to the Kearns 12-yard line and had a first down with 38 seconds left. With its fans
roaring, and the pressure on, the Cougars' defense held and hung on to the win.

Lehi's best moment - The defenses controlled the line of scrimmage and Lehi's Dylan Stadel was (again) dominant. On offense, QB
Jordan Smith completed 31of 51 passes - mostly for short yardage. But the Pioneers only managed just nine yards rushing.

What was learned from the game - Kearns played without QB J.R. Finai. The Cougars' physical play dictated the game. Penalties hurt the
Cougars throughout the contest.

Next week - Kearns returns home to play Skyline in its last non-region game. Lehi travels to play Mountain View.

Sept. 5 - Alta 28, Kearns 0

Story of the game - Alta QB Ammon Olsen passed for 191 yards and three TDs but, once again, it was the defense that received the
highest praise following a shutout win over previously unbeaten Kearns. Alta improved to 3-0.

Kearns' best moment - It was a tough loss, but playing powerhouses are supposed to make you better, right? Once again, the Cougars
played 5-A's best team well, keeping the game scoreless through the first quarter. Cougars' RB Alamoti Vaenuku was suspended and that
didn't help.

Alta's best moment - WR Parker Webster is Olsen's favorite target and these guys are playing themselves toward Div. I football
scholarships. Webster caught two TD passes in the first half and the Hawks cruised.

What was learned from the game - The Kearns defense can play with anyone, but the offense needs game-breaking ability. Even with
Vaenuku, that is missing. Kearns has athletic ability, and speed, but needs to find a playmaker.

Next week - Kearns hits the road to play Lehi, which has become a tough place to play. Alta goes up against Hunter.

Aug. 29 - Kearns 20, Cyprus 0

Story of the game - Kearns reserve RB Toa Afatasi ran for 88 yards on 18 carries as the Cougars' defense shut down Cyprus in a game
marred by a brawl the resulted in three players being tossed from the game.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars say they aren't very deep, but Afatasi came off the bench and was the
team's rushing hero. In addition, Kearns seemed to wear down the Pirates and it showed. Lastly, the Cougars'
staff was able to make the right calls as coach Bill Cosper had to leave the field after complaining of headaches.

Cyprus' best moment - This probably won't go down as one of the Pirates' best moments. It was their home
opener, and the offense couldn't score. In addition, games that have brawls aren't respected. It will be an
interesting week of practice for coach Sonny Sudbury's team.

What was learned from the game? Cyprus has a 1-1 record, and certainly the team's motivation has been
reduced following this game. But Sudbury has been there before, and this team will likely rally for next week's
game.

Next - Kearns has its first home game of the season, taking on 5-A power Alta. Cyprus will take on Juan Diego at home.

Aug. 22 - Kearns 20, Brighton 14

Story of the game - This was a big season-opening win. Sure, it was a road game, but Kearns won it with hard-nosed play, which is the
way it likes to play. The team learned it can win this way, and that it must play this type of game to be successful.

Kearns' best moment - It was the third quarter. Even though Kearns didn't score, the Cougars were able to hold on to the ball for almost
the entire quarter. It resulted in momentum. Next thing you know, a 7-6 deficit is a 20-7 advantage.

Brighton's best moment - The Bengals have a defense. They held Kearns to just just 11 yards in the first quarter and 82 by halftime. That
says they had a good scheme. Problem is, Kearns adapted.

What was learned from the game - If you look at the season schedules, Kearns can win a lot of games if it plays the type of games it
wants. Next week's game will be between two teams (Cyprus) who play similar. After that, Kearns will likely be the more "physical" team.

Next week - Kearns has another road game against Cyprus. Brighton plays at Davis. Both are non-region games.
