Oct. 22 - West Jordan 50, Kearns 14

Story of the game - QB Adam Boelter threw for 281 yards, and WR
C.J. O'Neal set the state record for most receptions in a season as
West Jordan pounded Kearns and earned a spot in the 5A state
playoffs.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars rallied in the second, but it was
too little, too late. Keanu Solovi had a short TD run and QB J.R. Finai
connected with Shannon Graham on a 57-yard scoring pass.

West Jordan's best moment - The Jaguars were on fire early,
scoring on their first five possessions. The defense also did its job,
holding Kearns scoreless in the first half. At one point, West Jordan
led 44-0.

What we learned from this game - Kearns has made the playoffs the
last two seasons by beating West Jordan in the season finale, so the
Jags got revenge this season. The 50 points was the most Kearns
gave up this season.

Next - Kearns is done for the season. West Jordan's opponent is TBA.

Oct. 16 - Kearns 35, Copper Hills 28

Story of the game - QB J.R. Finai threw two touchdown passes to
Sammy Sweat, including one in the fourth quarter that made the
difference in the game, as Kearns edged Copper Hills and kepts its
post-season hopes alive.

Kearns' best moment - D'Andre Galvin's 25-yard fumble return gave
Kearns a 21-0 lead, and there's something about defensive scores
that inspire a team.

Copper Hills' best moment - QB Quin Wright threw a pair of
touchdown passes and RB Colton Fogarty had a couple of touchdown
runs. The Grizzlies fell behind 21-0, but rallied to make this a game.

What we learned from this game - Big win for Kearns because it set
up a big game next week, where the Cougars could earn a 5A playoff
berth with a victory.

Next - Kearns goes to West Jordan. Copper Hills plays host to Lone
Peak.

Oct. 9 - Kearns 14, Hillcrest 7

Story of the game - QB J.R. Finai had touchdown passes to Sammy
Sweat and Justin Brower, and the Kearns defense held Hillcrest to
just 114 yards total offense and claimed the non-region win.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars didn't let Hillcrest score again
after the first quarter, and broke a two-game losing streak with their
second-best performance of the season. The offense also held on
the ball, allowed Hillcrest to just 36 plays, and seven first downs.

Hillcrest's best moment - The Huskies scored first on a 12-yard run
by Trae Kranz, and played Kearns tough the entire game. Liam Smith
had 16 tackles, including two sacks, and forced two Kearns fumbles.

What we learned from this game - This was a non-region game, and
a good confidence-builder for Kearns, especially the defense. The
next two games are also very winnable.

Next - Kearns plays host to Copper Hills. Hillcrest travels to Alta.

Sept. 30 - Sky View 33, Kearns 22

Story of the game - Kyler Carlsen passed for 250 yards and three
touchdowns, and Sky View turned two blocked punts into scores to
claim the non-region win on a cold night in Cache Valley.

Kearns' best moment - Trailing 21-7, Kearns opened the third quarter
with a trick play. Sammy Sweat took a pitch and then lofted a 68-yard
touchdown pass to Mantin Smith to briefly give the Cougars some
momentum.

Sky View's best moment - Jordan Nielsen was the hero on special
teams, blocking two Kearns punts. His second block was picked up
by teammate Brad Lenkersdorfer, who picked up and scored to give
the Bobcats a commanding lead.

What we learned from this game - This game was won by Sky View's
special teams, and Kearns will learn from it. This is a young team,
and may not make the post-season, but can't count them out.

Next - Kearns plays at Hillcrest. Sky View plays host to Ogden.

Sept. 24 - Bingham 47, Kearns 13

Story of the game - Harvey Langi rushed for a season-high 152 yards
and three touchdowns, and Braden Anderson returned a kick for a
score for the second straight week as Bingham dominated Kearns
and won its Region 3 opener.

Kearns' best moment - After Anderson returned a punt for a score,
the Cougars' Sol Cavillo grabbed the ensuing kickoff and took it 93
yards to the house. The Cougars didn't score again until reserve QB
Justin Summers hit Mantin Smith on a 21-yard TD late in the game.

Bingham's best moment - The Miners started quickly, and were
ahead 20-0 by the end of the first quarter. Langi scored on runs of 60,
50 and 15 yards, and then rested for the rest of the game. The
defense did a nice job, keeping Kearns out of the end zone until late
in the game. Travis McRae returned an INT 34 yards for a score.

What we learned from this game - Kearns fell behind quickly, and
had to adjust its game plan. The Cougars' passing game couldn't
score quickly, and couldn't keep up.

Next - Kearns has a non-region game at Sky View. Bingham has its
homecoming against
Copper Hills.

Sept. 18 - Kearns 21, Taylorsville 0

Story of the game - QB J.R. Finai passed for one touchdown and ran
for another, but it was the Kearns defense that made the difference,
holding Taylorsville scoreless in this Region 3 game.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars led just 7-0 in this
defensive-minded battle, but Finai hit Kevin Youndell on a touchdown
pass in the third period and then ran 18 yards for a score in the final
quarter to win its first region game.

Taylorsville's best moment - The Warriors played great defense, but
you won't win many game when you don't score any points.
Taylorsville was blanked for the second time this season.

What we learned from this game - This was a necessary win for the
Cougars because Taylorsville will likely end the season in the Region
3 cellar. The defense should have gained some confidence.

Next - From one extreme to the other? Kearns takes on Region 3
power
Bingham at home. Taylorsville plays at Copper Hills.

Sept. 11 - Riverton 22, Kearns 6

Story of the game - Dillon Draper rushed and Tua Laei had big nights
running the ball as Riverton spoiled Kearns' homecoming in both
teams' Region 3 opener.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars couldn't muster much offense
on this night, but finally reached the end zone when QB J.R. Finai hit
Sammy Sweat on a 29-yard scoring pass.

Riverton's best moment - The Silverwolves rushed for nearly 300
yards, but the biggest was Laei's 72-yard run in the second quarter
that broke a scoreless tie and gave Riverton the momentum.

What we learned from this game - This was the Region 3 opener,
and Kearns' offense was silenced. The Cougars had put up almost
100 points in their last two games. There's apparently a big difference
between Riverton and the last two opponents Kearns has faced.

Next - Kearns travels to Taylorsville. Riverton takes on Copper Hills at
home.

Sept. 4 - Kearns 53, Granger 13

Story of the game - J.R. Final passed for two touchdowns and ran for
two more, and Kearns also picked up touchdowns on punt and
interception returns to race past Granger in a non-region game.

Kearns' best moment - The blowout started when Granger fumbled
the second-half kickoff. Kearns took advantage, and then intercepted
a pass. Barely three minutes into the third quarter, it was 28-13.
Keanu Solovi returned a punt 65 yards for a score and Brady Sawsak
had a 55-yard interception return.

Granger's best moment - The Lancers trailed just 14-13 at halftime,
thanks to a 72-yard touchdown pass from Nico Meza to Maiko Giles
and a 36-yarder to Jordan Ujehly. Granger was shut down in the
second half.

What we learned from this game - Now that's more like it. The
Kearns defense played well, and even generated a couple of scores
for the team. The offense also played well for the second straight time
and just in time for the region season.

Next - Kearns begins Region 3 action against Riverton. Granger will
play host to
Skyline in Region 2.

Aug. 28 - Cyprus 41, Kearns 40 (OT)

Story of the game - QB Jazz White ran 89 yards for a touchdown in the
final minute of regulation as Cyprus rallied from a 15-point deficit and
won the game in overtime when Kearns missed its extra-point
conversion.

Kearns' best moment - After a disappointing offensive performance
in its opener, QB J.R. Finai led the charge. Sadly, the defense didn't
play to its usual potential. The 41 points given up was the most to any
team not named Bingham.

Cyprus' best moment - This was a rare offensive show between two
defensive-minded teams. Cyprus clearly gained the momentum on
White's run, which occurred with just six seconds left.

What we learned from this game - Kearns likely learned a lot from
this loss, and K Brock Whetman will win a few games for this team
later in his career. Kearns was playing an unfamiliar game, though. It
focuses on defense, which didn't do its job in this game.

Next - Kearns takes on Granger at home. Cyprus travels to play Juan
Diego.

Aug. 21 - Hunter 13, Kearns 0

Story of the game - Tevita Bloomfield rushed for 198 yards and
Hunter's offense held on to the football for most of the second half
and claimed an impressive non-region win over Kearns in both
team's season opener.

Kearns' best moment - The Cougars did not mount an offensive
threat, and coach Bill Cosper attributed that to his young offensive
line, which starts two freshman and a sophomore. Kearns' rugged
defense, however, kept it in the game.

Hunter's best moment - Hunter never trailed, and virtually put the
game away with a 23-play drive that resulted in a fourth-quarter field
goal. The Wolverines held Kearns to just 79 total yards, and netted
three turnovers.

What we learned from this game - This was a tough opener for
Kearns, and the team learned how it needs to play to be competitive.
Kearns is young, and needs to grow up quickly. Coach Cosper has
said that repeatedly.

Next - Kearns plays Cyprus in its home opener. Hunter travels to
Highland.
