Kearns' best moment: The Cougars were never in the game, but did
play more competitively in the second half. Brooke Larsen led Kearns
with nine points.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 22-7 at halftime and didn't
let Kearns reach double figures until midway through the third
quarter. Nicole Yazzie scored seven points and dished out 10 assists.
Statistical notes: Thirteen different players scored for Bingham. The
Miners were 13-17 from the free-throw line; Kearns was 10-17. The
Cougars had just eight field goals.

difference there is between Riverton and Bingham, and the rest of the
region.
Next: Kearns has Hunter at home on Feb. 12. Bingham plays host to
Copper Hills the same night.

Story of the game: Dani Lockhart scored 17 points and Chelsea
Sorensen had 16 as Riverton grabbed a nice lead early and downed
Kearns in a Region 3 game.
Kearns' best moment: Trailing 28-10 at halftime, the Cougars made
a nice run at Riverton, but couldn't make up any ground. Brooke
Larsen had 10 points for Kearns.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 19-6 after the first
quarter and were never threatened. Riverton did not empty its bench,
despite the lead, and outscored Kearns 23-15 in the second half.
Statistical notes: Kearns was held to single digits in three of the
game's four quarters. The Cougars' 25 points was a season low for
their offense.
What we learned from this game: Games against Bingham and
Riverton are probably not winnable for Kearns. That's OK. They're not
alone.
Next: Kearns has Copper Hills at home on Feb. 5. Riverton plays
host to Bingham the same night.

half, and actually had some success, but they were too far behind.
Julie Larsen had 12 points and Marina Leuluai had 10.
Statistical notes: Kearns was 20-34 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was just 5-14.

cements their spot in third place.

to Bingham the same night.

points in the second quarter, and that's when they made their move.
Micalee Orton had 11 points and nine players reached the scoring

first quarter, but kept falling further behind after that. Andrea

it hit five three-pointers. Kearns was 15-25 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 3-7. Latiesha Webster had seven points for Hunter.
What we learned from this game: Kearns improved to 2-2 in region
play. The Cougars probably won't beat Bingham or Riverton, so they
have to take care of business in the other games.

to Bingham the same night.

Jan. 20 - Bingham 63, Kearns 54
Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie scored 21 points as Bingham
pulled away in the second half and beat Kearns, despite a 35-points
effort from the Cougars' Brooke Larsen.
Kearns' best moment: Larsen was on fire. Her effort was more than
double her previous best. The Cougars stayed with Bingham the
entire game, and were helped by the Miners' poor free-throw shooting.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners led only 29-28 at halftime, but
slowly build the lead after intermission. Freshman Dezz Ramos
added 13 for Bingham, which was coming off its first loss of the
season.
Statistical notes: The 54 points given up was a season-worst for
Bingham's defense. The Miners hit just 7-19 from the free-throw line;
Kearns was 12-27. Ramos had three treys for Kearns.
What we learned from this game: The loss to Riverton may have
stung Bingham rather badly, but Kearns isn't a bad team. This was
the first time we've seen Larsen play like this.
Next: Kearns goes to Hunter on Jan. 22. Bingham travels to Copper
Hills the same night.

fourth quarter to make the game appear more of a rout than it was.
Brooke Larsen had 13 points, Christen Lopez 12 and Dallas Vega 10
for Kearns.
Copper Hills' best moment: The game was tied 10-10 after the first
quarter and the Grizzlies were actually within 10 points until midway
through the fourth quarter. Brittany Hackworth had 10 points for
Copper Hills.
Statistical notes: Kearns was 16-24 from the free-throw line, many of
those in the fourth quarter. Copper Hills was just 2-7. Kim Bohne had
eight points and Katie Lisonbee seven for the Grizzlies.
What we learned from this game: The win evened Kearns' region
record at 1-1. It's pretty obvious the Cougars are playing for third
place and this win was a good step.
Next: Kearns has Bingham at home on Jan. 20. Copper Hills plays at
West Jordan the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Larsen was the top scorer with 14 points.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves jumped to a 10-point lead
and led 33-13 at halftime, scoring mostly inside. They substituted
freely in the second half. Dani Lockhart had 11 points.
Statistical notes: Riverton never made a three-pointer. Riverton was
9-12 from the free-throw line; Kearns was 12-21.
What we learned from this game: This was never a winnable game
as Riverton is a much better team.
Next: Kearns plays at Copper Hills Jan. 15. Riverton takes on rival
Bingham the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Jan. 6 - Kearns 58, Hillcrest 34
Story of the game: Brooke Larsen scored 17 points and helped
Kearns take the lead over Hillcrest early and keep expanding it in the
last non-region game for both teams.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars led the entire game, claiming a
17-12 first-quarter lead and then moving it to 30-19 by halftime. Their
second-half defense allowed only 15 points after that, so there was
no comeback threat. Dallas Vega added 12 points and Micalee Orton
had 11.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies problem was offense.
Leading scorer Lexi Amundsen had just four points and nobody else
really picked up the scoring slack, except Linda Shober, who had 10
points.
Statistical notes: The 58 points given up by Hillcrest was the most
since the season opener. Kearns' victory was its third straight since
returning from the Farmington, N.M. tournament.
What we learned from this game: Kearns is on roll and, while a
region title is unlikely, the Cougars go into region play with the
potential to play a key role.
Next: Kearns opens Region 3 play at Riverton on Jan. 13. Hillcrest
starts Region 2 action at home against Skyline Jan. 14.

Orton had 11 as Kearns broke the game open in the first half and
coasted to an easy non-region win over Jordan.

quarter and led 30-13 at halftime. Jordan didn't ever threaten, even
though Kearns shot badly from the free-throw line.
Jordan's best moment: Jordan didn't rally, but stayed even with
Kearns in the fourth quarter, even though the game was out of reach.
Kim Marriott was the top scorer with seven points.
Statistical notes: This was Kearns' final non-region home game,
where they are 2-0 this season. The Cougars were 6-17 from the
free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: This was Kearns' second straight
win, and it might be that the team is playing better since its New
Mexico road trip.
Next: Kearns goes to Hillcrest on Jan. 6. Jordan plays at Copper Hills
the same night.

Story of the game: Brooke Larsen scored 12 points and Kearns hit

quarters, but found their offense in the final period. Saane Lo'amanu
led Taylorsville with nine points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Kearns' best moment: This was a defensive-oriented game, and the
Cougars led most of the way. Kearns led 11-9 at halftime. McAfee
added eight points for the Cougars.
Statistical notes: Kearns connected on 9-12 free throws, most of
those late in the game. Taylorsville was 5-10. This was one of the
lowest-scoring games of the season for both teams.
What we learned from this game: This was a defensive-battle and
the first since Kearns returned from its New Mexico tournament. THe
Cougars played well in the final minutes to hold on to the win.
Next: Kearns takes on Jordan on Jan. 30. Taylorsville travels to
Hunter the same day.

Dec. 20 - Navajo Prep, N.M. 49, Kearns 34
Story of the game: Marqia Begaye scored 21 points and Nicole Crisp
and Alexis Archambault each had seven as Navajo Prep beat Kearns
and claimed third place in the Webb Toyota Invitational in Farmington,
N.M.
Kearns' best moment: Kearns trailed 26-14 at halftime, but played
pretty evenly with the Eagles throughout the second half. Brooke
Larsen led Kearns in scoring with 16 points.
Navajo Prep's best moment: The second quarter was when the
game was decided as Navajo Prep held to Kearns to just two points
during that span.
Statistical notes: No statistics were available from this game.
Sheridan (Ark.) won the tourney title, beating Durango (Colo.) 70-68.
Kirtland Central beat Farmington 55-27 for fifth place, and Fruita
(Colo.) edged Tohatchi for seventh. Kat Garcia of Durango was
named the tourney MVP.
What we learned from this game: Christen Lopez was named to the
all-tournament team for Kearns. The Cougars finished with a 1-2
record, which had to be somewhat disappointing after the Cougars
won the opener. But it was a good experience.
Next: Kearns plays at Taylorsville Dec. 23.
Links: The Farmington Daily Times had a reporter at the tourney, and
he wrote a couple of paragraphs about this game near the end of his
story. To read it, click here. There was no report in the Deseret News
or Salt Lake Tribune.
Dec. 19 - Durango, Colo. 59, Kearns 54
Story of the game: Kat Garcia scored 24 points and Durango
recovered from a bus ride through a snowstorm to Farmington and
beat Kearns on the second day of the Webb Toyota Invitational in
Farmington, N.M.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars jumped to a 17-5 first-quarter
lead, and still held a 27-22 advantage at halftime.
Durango's best moment: The Demons came into the game with an
8-0 record, but they arrived at the gym 10 minutes before game time,
and were not ready to play. However, they outscored Kearns 17-5 in
the second quarter and 18-5 in the third to grab the lead.
Statistical notes: Kearns statistics were not available. Garcia hit
three treys for Durango.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game for
Kearns, but Durango proved to be too talented and advanced to the
championship game of the tournament. Other tourney scores were:
Sheridan (Ark.) 56, Navajo Prep 43; Farmington 59, Tohatchi 46;
Kirtland Central 40, Fruita (Colo.) 29.

Dec. 18 - Kearns 37, Farmington, N.M. 24
Story of the game: Christen Lopez scored 13 points and Micalee
Orton had 11 as Kearns rolled past Farmington in the second half
and beat the host team on the first day of the Webb Toyota Invitational.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars defense should be praised, as
they outscored Farmington 24-11 in the second half. Kearns gave up
only three points in the fourth quarter and disappointed the home
crowd.
Farmington's best moment: It was the season opener for
Farmington and the team played like it. Jessica Benally led

Farmington was just 1-6. Other scores from first-round action was:
Sheridan (Ark.) 65, Fruita (Colo.) 43, Navajo Prep 39, Kirtland Central
26 and Durango (Colo.) defeated Tohatchi by forfeit.
What we learned from this game: This was a big win because the
home team is in charge of scheduling, and usually tries to give itself
the easiest road to the championship game.
Next: Kearns takes on Durango, Colo. Farmington will play Tohatchi,
N.M.
Links: The Farmington Daily Times had a reporter at the tournament,

Dec. 9 - Kearns 58, Granger 48
Story of the game: Brooke Larsen scored 16 points and Dallas Vega
and Micalee Orton had 10 points apiece as Kearns handed Granger
its first loss of the season in a non-region game.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars led from the start and held a
31-20 halftime advantage. Kearns was efficient and played a good
game. Vega was the Cougars' primary outside shooting threat with
two three-pointers.
Granger's best moment: Mary Lavekihelotu led Granger with 20
points and Vahine Tuigamala had 14. The Lancers, however, didn't
have their usual third-period rally. Instead, Kearns extended its lead.
Statistical notes: Kearns scored 19 points in the first quarter, which
is the most Granger has given up all season. The Cougars also hit
12-20 from the free-throw line. Once again, Granger was sub-50
percent at 6-15.
What we learned from this game: Kearns earned its third straight
win and seems to be on a roll as it leaves town to play in a
tournament.
Next: Kearns goes to Farmington, N.M. to play in the Webb Toyota
Invitational Dec. 18-20. Granger travels to Ogden Dec. 12.

Dec. 4 - Kearns 44, Cottonwood 36
Story of the game: Dallas Vega scored 14 points, mostly from
three-point land, as Kearns rallied with a big second quarter to beat
Cottonwood and earn its first victory of the season.
Kearns' best moment: With Vega and Ostberg as outside-shooting
threats, the Cougars were able to spread Cottonwood's defense. It
took them a while to get going, but Kearns got the momentum when
their shots fell.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts started well, and shot far
better than they did in the first game. Cottonwood claimed a
14-11lead. The Colts played great defense in the third quarter, too,
limiting Kearns to just four points.
Statistical notes: Angie Schwartz was Cottonwood's top scorer with
12 points. Fehi Fakailoatonga added eight. Kearns hit 9-20 from the
free-throw line as the Colts had to foul late again.
What we learned from this game: This was a good road win for
Kearns, which was destroyed the first time it traveled (to Lone Peak).
Cottonwood also played better.
Next: Kearns goes to Granger on Dec. 9. Cottonwood will play at Alta
Dec. 5.

Dec. 2 - Kearns 50, Northridge 36
Story of the game: Christen Lopez scored 13 points and Dallas
Vegas had 11 as Kearns built a comfortable first-half lead and beat
Northridge for its first win of the season.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars had a seven-point first-quarter
lead and built it to 31-17 at halftime. Lopez and Vega had the only
three-point baskets in the game. It was a much-better performance
than last week's game.
Northridge's best moment: This was the Knights' first game and they
were a one-woman show. Amanda Gardner had a game-high 17
points. McCall Eldredge added seven. Nobody else had more than
four.
Statistical notes: Northridge hit 6-8 free throws. Not bad for the first
game, in an unfamiliar gym. The second half was played at a 19-all
standstill.
What we learned from this game: It was Kearns' first win, and it was
pretty apparent the Cougars were the better team right away. A
confidence-builder for the team.
Next: Kearns travels to Cottonwood Dec. 4. Northridge looks for its

Nov. 25 - Lone Peak 68, Kearns 35
Story of the game: Megan Smith scored 26 points and Lone Peak
dominated the middle two quarters and whipped Kearns in the
season opener for both teams.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars played well in the first and fourth
quarters, but that wasn't nearly good enough. Kearns was led in
scoring by Brooke Larsen and Christen Lopez, who had 11 points
each.
Lone Peak's best moment: The Knights outscored Kearns 43-11 in
the second and third quarters combined. Smith even had a
three-pointer to her credit. Marquelle Funk had nine points for Lone
Peak.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot about 50 percent from the
free-throw line. Kearns opened last year at home against Lone Peak
was beaten handily, too.
What we learned from this game: It's the season opener, and Lone
Peak obviously has a good program. Kearns now knows how much it
needs to improve to be among 5A's best.
Next: Kearns has its home opener against Northridge Dec. 2. Lone
Peak takes on West Jordan the same night.
