MAPLE MOUNTAIN FOOTBALL - 2009
|
Oct. 22 - Spanish Fork 56, Maple Mountain 12
Story of the game - RB T.J. Inoke rushed for 154 yards and QB
Hayden Nielson had 104 more as Spanish Fork buried Maple
Mountain in the first clash between these two neighborhood rivals.
Maple Mountain's best moment - Brennan Hyatt did it again. Taking
the opening kickoff, Hyatt returned it 90 yards for a touchdown to give
the Golden Eagles a brief lead. Hyatt is an exciting player and has
been a key player all season on special teams.
Spanish Fork's best moment - The Dons were able to control the
line of scrimmage. That led to their dominating running game.
Nielson completed 10 of 15 passes for 153 yards. As a team
Spanish Fork had almost 500 yards of offense.
What we learned from this game - Maple Mountain finished the
season winless, but the Eagles were competitive in a couple of
games and provided some excitement. The first year is always tough
for a new school.
Next - Maple Mountain is done for the season. Spanish Fork
advances to the 4A playoffs, where it will play host to Pine View.

Oct. 9 - Uintah 46, Maple Mountain 14
Story of the game - Chalen Sheffield and Zack Blackham combined
for over 200 yards rushing, and teammate Travis Smuin returned an
interception for a touchdown and Uintah belted Maple Mountain in a
Region 8 game.
Maple Mountain's best moment - The Golden Eagles trailed 32-0 at
halftime, but got on the scoreboard twice on a pair of runs by Riley
Flinders. QB Jace Edmunds completed 14 of 29 passes for 121
yards.
Uintah's best moment - The Utes jumped on Maple Mountain early,
claiming a 21-0 first-quarter lead. They added to it in the second
period, recording two safeties. Uintah dominated time of possession
in its homecoming game.
What we learned from this game - The loss pretty much relegated
Maple Mountain to last place in the region.
Next - Maple Mountain has a week off before ending the season at
home against Spanish Fork. Uintah plays Spanish Fork this week.

Oct. 2 - Springville 56, Maple Mountain 12
Story of the game - QB Steve Bate threw for 261 yards and four
touchdowns as Springville blew the game open with a big second
quarter en route to a Region 8 win over Maple Mountain.
Maple Mountain's best moment - The Golden Eagles were in the
game early, taking advantage of Martin Totland's 37-yard field goal to
claim a 3-0 lead. Totland added another FG just before halftime, but
that wasn't enough.
Springville's best moment - Bate threw TD passes to Todd Gillies
(2), Taylor Baker and Brandon Boyer. Later, reserve QB Aaron Gray
hit Jordan Sumsion on a scoring pass. The defense held Maple
Mountain to 116 yards total offense.
What we learned from this game - This was not a winnable game,
but the Eagles had their moments. Jace Edmunds' 1-yard run was
Maple Mountain's only touchdown.
Next - Maple Mountain plays at Uintah. Springville takes on Spanish
Fork.

Sept. 25 - Payson 35, Maple Mtn. 0
Story of the game - QB Chris Robbins rushed for 126 yards and
returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown as Payson whipped
Maple Mountain in front of its homecoming crowd.
Maple Mountain's best moment - The Golden Eagles had trouble on
offense. Of 13 possession, the Eagles went three-and-out on 10 of
them.
Payson's best moment - Brady Loveless, Jeremiah Guzman and
Robbins handled Payson's running attack. The Lions threw the ball
just five times, completing two, and still were able to move the
football. Loveless had a 43-yard touchdown run just before halftime
to make the score 21-0.
What we learned from this game - The Lions went all-out at
homecoming and won its first Region 8 game of the season. The
shutout was Maple Mountain's first.
Next - Maple Mountain returns home to play Springville. Payson goes
to Spanish Fork.

and Salt Lake Tribune.
Sept. 18 - Salem Hills 52, Maple Mtn. 6
Story of the game - RB Kolapa Wolfgramm and QB Josh Adams
combined for almost 350 yards rushing as Salem Hills roared past
Maple Mountain in the Region 8 opener, and dampened the school's
first homecoming game.
Maple Mountain's best moment - Trailing 7-0, the Golden Eagles
gave their fans some hope when Jace Edmunds hit Greg Waite on a
12-yard scoring pass. Edmunds completed 15 of 26 passes, but for
only 79 yards.
Salem Hills' best moment - Wolfgramm had three touchdowns, and
was one reason why the Skyhawks led 38-6 at halftime. Adams
completed four passes, and two of them went for touchdowns. The
win helped the team forget a tough loss the previous week.
What we learned from this game - Salem Hills is in its second year,
and its coach was reminded that his team went through the same
first-year episodes that Maple Mountain has this season.
Next - Maple Mountain travels to play Payson. Salem Hills has a
home game against Spanish Fork.

There was no report in the Salt Lake Tribune.
Sept. 11 - North Sanpete 34, Maple Mtn. 14
Story of the game - QB Rhett Bird passed for 211 yards and four
touchdowns, and RB Jared Watts ran for 132 yards as North Sanpete
rallied from an early deficit to bury Maple Mountain in a non-region
game.
Maple Mountain's best moment - Brennan Hyatt is making a name
for himself. He returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a
touchdown. It marked the second straight week he has done that.
Hyatt also caught a TD pass later from QB Jace Edmunds.
North Sanpete's best moment - The Hawks didn't trail for long as
Taylor Bailey caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Bird to give
North Sanpete a 7-6 lead. Marcos Murillo had a big night on defense,
intercepting two passes. North Sanpete had four picks in the game.
What we learned from this game - The Golden Eagles were
competitive, and the two teams gave the fans something to watch.
Next - Maple Mountain returns for homecoming to play Salem Hills.
North Sanpete travels to Wasatch.

Sept. 4 - Manti 28, Maple Mtn. 19
Story of the game - Zach Bown rushed for 131 yards and Devan
Fowles had 109 more as Manti kept Maple Mountain winless with a
non-region win.
Maple Mountain's best moment - Trailing 14-0, Brennan Hyatt got
the home crowd on its feet with an 81-yard kickoff return for a
touchdown. The Eagles couldn't establish a running game, but Jace
Edmunds threw for 166 yards. Devin Barker caught five passes for
118 yards.
Manti's best moment - The Templars played great defense in the
first half, stopping Maple Mountain's run game, and didn't allow a
score (except for the kickoff). Freddy Taufa was a big reason with four
sacks.
What we learned from this game - This was a game that Maple
Mountain hoped to win, but it didn't happen. Manti controlled the line
of scrimmage. That's been a fact in every game so far.
Next - Maple Mountain plays at North Sanpete. Manti travels to Cedar
City.

Aug. 28 - Westlake 48, Maple Mtn. 8
Story of the game - Brandon Aldsfelt scored two touchdowns,
including a 99-yard kickoff return to start the game, as Westlake built
a huge first-half lead and coasted to its first win - over Maple
Mountain.
Maple Mountain's best moment - The Golden Eagles avoided the
shutout in the fourth quarter when QB Jake Varney hit Jace Edmunds
on an 8-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles held Westlake scoreless
in the second half.
Westlake's best moment - Westlake had a perfect first half, starting
with the kickoff return. QB John Ursus threw two touchdown passes
and ran for two more. Ursus completed 5 of 8 passes for 179 yards.
What we learned from this game - This was a battle of "expansion"
schools. Its first home didn't start well, with the opponent returning
the kickoff for a score. Maple Mountain has been dominated by two
other new schools, so the rest of the season doesn't look promising.
Next - Maple Mountain plays host to 2A Manti next week. Westlake
has a home game against Payson.

Herald's article, click here. To see the Deseret News brief, click here.

Aug. 21 - Stansbury 35, Maple Mountain 7
Story of the game - RBs E.J. Jones, Payeton Reed and Gareth
Anderson combined for over 250 yards rushing as Stansbury opened
its football program with a convincing home win over Maple Mountain.
Maple Mountain's best moment - This was also the first game for
the Golden Eagles, and their slow start didn't help. Maple Mountain
did rally on on a short TD run by QB Jacob Watson. The Eagles then
stopped Stansbury, but were flagged for a penalty on the punt, which
gave the ball back, and the Colts went in to score.
Stansbury's best moment - The defense stopped Maple Mountain
throughout the first half, and ended up with seven sacks. That
allowed Stansbury to earn a 14-0 lead and gain the confidence it
needed in its first game.
What we learned from this game - This was a game between two
"expansion" schools and you never know what could happen. It was
a good win for Stansbury, and its fans enjoyed watching it.
Next - Maple Mountain will play host to Westlake in another battle of
new schools. Stansbury takes on Provo at home.

sent a photographer to the game. To read the Deseret News story,
