March 2 - at Fremont (L 43-62)

* - Region 2 games. Home games in CAPS
March 2 - Fremont 62, Murray 43

Story of the game: Brock Smith, Jacob Nish and Patrick Fishburn each
scored in double figures to help carry Fremont past Murray in the first
round of the 5A state tournament.

Murray's highlights: David Collette and Cade Bullough provided most
of Murray's offense, and Collette never quit. He scored nine of his
game-high 21 points in the fourth period, but the Spartans didn't have
enough firepower. Bullough finished with 10 points.

Fremont's highlights: The Silverwolves were amped up for this game,
and had a nice crowd to cheer them on to victory. They led 17-7 after
the first period and were never threatened.

Statistical notes: The Spartans couldn't hit a three-pointer in the final
period, when they desperately needed it. Murray shot just 4-13 from the
free-throw line. Collette went up against three Fremont players that
were about the same size and fared well against all of them.

What we learned from this game: A win would have given Murray a
.500 season record, but the Spartans went up against a good team.
Fremont would go on to beat top-ranked Bingham the next night.

Feb. 22 - Murray 39, Cyprus 38

Story of the game: Cade Bullough's basket with eight seconds left
was the difference as Murray held off Cyprus to clinch the No. 3 seed in
Region 2.

Murray's highlights: The Spartans led most of the game, and held a
31-23 advantage entering the fourth quarter. David Collette, who was
double and triple-teamed most of the night, fouled out in the fourth
quarter. The Spartans won on a well-executed play and Bullough hit the
shot he'll remember the rest of his life.

Cyprus' highlights: The Pirates used the scoring of Marquis Newman,
who scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth period. They had a
chance to win the game, but suffered a turnover in the final seconds.

Statistical notes: Mike Lombardo's three-pointer in the fourth quarter
really made a difference in this game. The Cyprus defense clearly was
set up to try to stop Collette. This was the only game all season in
which he didn't score in double figures.

What we learned from this game: Cyprus has shown a lot of
improvement during the season, and Murray was fortunate to escape
with a win, which ended its three-game losing streak.

Feb. 19 - Granger 55, Murray 52

Story of the game: Andrew Vaovasa led a huge comeback, scoring a
season-high 15 points, as Granger upset Murray in a Region 2 game.

Murray's highlights: The Spartans' David Collette had a nice game,
scoring 20 points, and helped Murray build a 17-6 first-quarter lead.
Cade Bullough added 15, including a couple of big baskets in the
fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Granger's highlights: This was a big win for the Lancers. Vaovasa had
a lot of help, as Deng Deng added 13 points, Cody Thorup 11 and
Isaiah Tademy 10. Granger also shot 6-6 from the free-throw line in the
final period.

Statistical notes: Thorup was coming off a 19-point game against
Cyprus. Murray didn't get much scoring help from its bench in this
game. Collette was just 1-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth
quarter. Mitch Tate got Murray ahead early with eight first-quarter points.

What we learned from this game: This was a disappointing loss for
Murray, but Granger had something to play for, and has really been
playing well lately. The Spartans may still have not recovered from
Tuesday's loss to West.

Feb. 16 - West 64, Murray 36

Story of the game: Tyrell Corbin scored 19 points and center Gatete
Djuma had a good game inside and West buried Murray to remain
undefeated in Region 2 play.

Murray's highlights: Mike Lombardo nailed a three-pointer in the first
period to help the Spartans stay close, but the game got out of hand
shortly afterward. David Collette was the top scorer with 13 points, but
nobody else had more than six.

West's highlights: Corbin scored 10 points in the second quarter as
West took an 11-point halftime lead. Junior Vea had a nice game, too,
and helped the Panthers really open their offense after that. Vea
finished with 12 points.

Statistical notes: Julian Moore had six points for Murray. The Spartans
struggled from the free-throw line. Murray's 36-point output was its
lowest of the season. Vea had seven rebounds for West, making this
game his best of the year.

What we learned from this game: This loss wasn't surprising, but the
margin had to be disappointing. Murray has already clinched a
postseason berth, but needs to bounce back quickly.

second place.

Murray's highlights: The Spartans rallied from a 22-3 deficit, and
climbed within 41-35 at one time on a basket by Wyatt Woodard. David
Collette had 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Skyline's highlights: The Eagles connected on their first nine shots
and dominated the first quarter. Orr forced Murray to change its
defense by driving to the hoop for several scores. Jackson ended
Murray's run with four straight free throws in the final minute.

Statistical notes: Skyline outrebounded Murray 34-27, and didn't allow
an offense rebound in the first half. Murray shot 0-8 on three-pointers.
Chase Dunford scored Skyline's first basket, but nothing more. He did
play a nice floor game. Jake Osterloh had 10 rebounds.

What we learned from this game: The loss ended Murray's four-game
win streak. This was an important game, and the Spartans were never
in it.

nice combination in this otherwise defensive battle. Murray's defense
played well and Collette was a force inside. Bullough finished with nine
points.

opening quarter and trailed throughout. Daniel Kristensen (nine points)
and Korbin Dooley (eight) led Cottonwood on a comeback, but poor
shooting doomed them.

Statistical notes: Cottonwood shot just 7-19 from the free throw line.
Murray was 12-20. Grandinetti nailed a pair of three-pointers. He is
averaging 10.5 ppg over the last four games.

What we learned from this game: The Spartans survived and swept
the season series with Cottonwood. This team is jelling and gaining
confidence at the right time.
