MURRAY BOYS BASKETBALL - 2008-09
|
March 3 - Provo 57, Murray 39
Story of the game: Brandon Davies scored 19 points and pulled down
13 rebounds as unbeaten Provo finally pulled away from Murray and won
its first-round game at the 4A state tournament.
Murray's key moment: The Spartans were a heavy underdog, but stayed
right with Provo until near the end. Ken Masic and Markus Duran were
Murray's outside threats, finishing with 15 and 13 points. The Spartans'
shooting slipped late, though, and that contributed to their downfall.
Provo's key moment: The Bulldogs led 40-34 entering the final quarter,
but shut down Murray, outscoring the Spartans 17-5 the rest of the way.
Kyle Collinsworth chipped in with 12 points and Ryan Durrant and Beau
Hunter had 10.
Statistical notes: Both teams were nervous early, and it showed. Provo
hit just 14-25 free throws; Murray was 5-8. Murray's 39 points was a
season low.
What we learned from this game: Murray put up a good fight, but just
got a bad draw in this tournament. Still, the Spartans were a hot team
the latter half of the season.
Next: Murray finished the season with a 12-10 record. Provo advanced to
play Highland on March 5.

Feb. 24 - Murray 89, Cottonwood 70
Story of the game: Markus Duran put in an MVP-type performance,
scoring 27 points, as Murray buried Cottonwood in its Region 6 finale for
its fourth straight victory.
Murray's best moment: The game was close until the Spartans really
got their offense going in the second half, pouring in 56 points in that
span. Duran had five of his team's 11 three-pointers. Ken Masic and
Wyatt Woodard added 14 points apiece.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts can also shoot the ball. Tyson
Reynolds led the way with 26 points and Cottonwood had 10 treys.
Raymond Chavez had 16 and Jake Reynolds 14.
Statistical notes: Murray's 89-point effort was its season best. Duran
finished the season as Region 6's top scorer. Murray outscored
Cottonwood 34-26 in the final quarter.
What we learned from this game: Murray enters the 4A state tourney as
a "hot" team, but defense wins championships. The Spartans could
scare a few teams as a No. 4 seed.
Next: Murray got the worst draw and will play unbeaten Provo in the first
round of the tourney March 3. Cottonwood takes on Bountiful the same
day.

Feb. 20 - Murray 63, Cyprus 60
Story of the game: Markus Duran scored 20 points as Murray held off
Cyprus and clinched at least a fourth-place position in the Region 6
standings.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans had a 26-23 lead at halftime, and
extended it to eight points going into the final period. They withstood the
Cyprus comeback by hitting enough free throws. Ken Masic added 10
points.
Cyprus' best moment: This was the Pirates' best offensive effort of the
season. They scored 26 points in the final period to make it a game.
Weston Warr was the top scorer with 14 points, while Taylor Jones had
13.
Statistical notes: Cyprus is now 0-5 in games decided by three points
or less. The Pirates had four three-pointers, led by Roman Sanchez with
two. Duran and John Hunt had a pair of treys each for Murray.
What we learned from this game: Murray has now won five of its last six
games and has a chance to get the No. 3 seed if it beats Cottonwood
and West loses to Granger.
Next: Murray finishes the regular season at Cottonwood Feb. 24. Cyprus
travels to Olympus the same night.

Feb. 17 - Murray 68, Granger 50
Story of the game: John Hunt led a balanced scoring effort with 14
points and Murray pulled away from Granger in the fourth quarter and
downed the Lancers in a Region 6 game.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 45-39 entering the fourth
quarter, but outscored Granger 23-11 in the final period. Murray had four
players in double figures, and nailed eight three-pointers.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers put forth a good effort in a losing
cause. Tre Musgrow had 19 points, Woul Koyom added 14 and Austin
Scott had 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Statistical notes: Markus Duran had 13 points; Wyatt Woodard had 12
and Ken Masic 11. Scott's 10 points was a season high.
What we learned from this game: Murray has pretty much clinched
fourth place in Region 6, and has won four of its last five games. The
Spartans would lose a tiebreaker with Highland, but would win against
West.
Next: Murray takes on Cyprus on Feb. 20. Granger takes on Cottonwood
at home the same night.

Feb. 13 - Murray 67, East 64
Story of the game: Ken Masic had the hot hand this time, scoring a
season-high 24 points, as Murray rallied to beat East and move into sole
possession of fourth place in Region 6.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 17-9 after the first quarter, but
let the game get away in the second period. They rallied and finally took
the lead in the fourth quarter. Markus Duran added 15 points.
East's best moment: The Leopards scored 26 points in the second
quarter, and grabbed the momentum. Christian Brown scored 19 points
and Jeff Vargas 18 for East.
Statistical notes: Murray was 19-31 from the free-throw line; East was
11-18. Murray has a chance to finish the regular season above .500.
What we learned from this game: Murray bounced back from its loss at
Highland and could win its last four, which would guarantee the
Spartans a No. 4 seed at state.
Next: Murray plays at Granger on Feb. 17. East takes on Cyprus at home
the same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Feb. 10 - Highland 58, Murray 45
Story of the game: Spenser Bowen scored 15 points as Highland
jumped to a big first-quarter lead and held off Murray in a Region 6
contest.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans rallied as Markus Duran scored
22 points. Murray came within five points, but seemed to run out of gas.
John Hunt added 10 points, but the team's point total was a season low.
Highland's best moment: The Rams led 20-5 after the first quarter, and
had the home crowd excited. Bowen and Taylor Brightwell, who had 10
points, had their shooting eye back and that made a big difference.
Statistical notes: Highland won the season series, which could be a big
deal if the teams end up tied in the standings. Bowen had three treys,
and Brightwell two. This was their best shooting night in a while.
What we learned from this game: Murray could have helped itself
immeasurably with a win, but still has a good chance to reach
post-season play. The team has a favorable schedule.
Next: Murray returns home to take on East on Feb. 13. Highland plays
host to Granger the same night.

Feb. 6 - Murray 61, West 59
Story of the game: Markus Duran scored 20 points, including a
three-pointer from the corner with one second left, to lift Murray to an
upset win over West, which dropped the Panthers out of first place in
Region 6.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans trailed throughout the first half,
but pulled ahead at the end of the third quarter, setting up an exciting
finish. Murray hit nine three-point shots, including six by Duran. Ken
Masic added 15 points and John Hunt 10.
West's best moment: The Panthers got a decent effort from its usual
crew, and Tyrell Corbin showed off his shooting ability with three treys.
Chris Barnes led West with 18 points. This was a tough loss, but not a
killer.
Statistical notes: Both teams didn't fare too well at the free-throw line.
Murray was 4-9; West 9-15. The game at Murray earlier this season was
also a close (60-57) game.
What we learned from this game: This was Murray's second straight
win over a region power, and it comes at a great time. The Spartans are
in fourth place and have a good schedule to finish.
Next: Murray plays at Highland on Feb. 10. West travels to East the
same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. There was no report in the Salt Lake
Tribune.
Jan. 30 - Murray 53, Olympus 50
Story of the game: Markus Duran had a season-high 26 points,
including five three-pointers, as Murray rallied to hand Olympus its first
Region 6 loss.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans trailed most of the game, but
stayed close. Duran was Murray's only real offensive threat (he scored
about half its points) and the Spartans won their fourth game in five
games.
Oly's best moment: In a battle of two great offenses, this was more of a
defensive tussle. Connor Brady led Oly with 15 points, while Corbin
Green had 14 and Spencer Hille 11. Oly had "only" four three-pointers.
Statistical notes: Only five players scored for Oly. Will Watkins had just
two points. Murray had seven three-pointers.
What we learned from this game: The Spartans need this win because
it put them into a tie for fourth place, and also dropped Oly into a tie for
first with West.
Next: Murray plays at West on Feb. 6. Olympus has Highland at home
the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Jan. 27 - Cottonwood 69, Murray 65
Story of the game: Raymond Chavez's long-range shooting might have
been the difference as Cottonwood pulled away in the third quarter and
hung on to beat Murray in a Region 6 game.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans tried to rally in the fourth quarter,
but couldn't get close enough. Markus Duran had 23 points and John
Hunt had 13 for Murray.
Cottonwood's best moment: The game was tied 28-28 at halftime, but
Cottonwood outscored Murray 23-16 in the third quarter. Chavez led the
way with four three-point baskets. Tyson Reynolds added 14 points.
Statistical notes: Cottonwood was 20-32 from the free-throw line;
Murray was 16-19. This was Cottonwood's second straight win on
Murray's home floor. Ken Masic had just six points for Murray.
What we learned from this game: Murray dropped out of a tie with
Cottonwood in the region standings and is now in fifth place. The
Spartans also enter a difficult part of their schedule.
Next: Murray has a home game against Olympus on Jan. 30.
Cottonwood takes on West at home the same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Jan. 23 - Murray 64, Cyprus 36
Story of the game: Markus Duran scored 17 points and John Hunt had
13 as Murray roared past Cyprus with a big third quarter and took its third
straight Region 6 win.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 23-16 at halftime, but then
outscored Cyprus 25-5 in the third quarter to turn this contest into a rout.
Duran and Hunt had three treys each.
Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates had trouble scoring. They had just
three points in the first quarter. Isaac Johnson led Cyprus with nine
points, and Weston Warr had seven.
Statistical notes: Cyprus 36 points was its lowest since its season
opener. It was also a best for Murray's defense. Murray was 9-11 from
the free-throw line; Cyprus was 14-22.
What we learned from this game: Murray is back where it should be
(3-3) in region play and now should have the confidence it needs to play
a role in the Region 6 standings.
Next: Murray returns home to play Cottonwood Jan. 27. Cyprus goes to
Olympus the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Jan. 20 - Murray 55, Granger 43
Story of the game: David Collette had his best game of the season,
leading a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, as Murray pulled away
from Granger in the fourth quarter and won its second straight game.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans trailed 36-35 entering the final
quarter, but outscored Granger 20-7 after that. Markus Duran added 11
points and Ken Masic and John Hunt each had 10.
Granger's best moment: This was a winnable game for the Lancers,
but they couldn't hold on. Tre Musgrow had 16 points and T.J. Tapusoa
12 for Granger.
Statistical notes: Oddly, Granger had six three-pointers, while Murray
had just three. Granger scored just 16 points in the second half.
What we learned from this game: Murray picked up a much-needed win
and is now moving into the middle of the pack and, perhaps, a
post-season berth.
Next: Murray plays at Cyprus Jan. 23. Granger travels to Cottonwood the
same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,

Jan. 16 - Murray 70, East 49
Story of the game: Markus Duran scored 21 points and Ken Masic
added 15 as Murray pulled away from East in the second half and
earned its first Region 6 win.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led just 31-29 at halftime, but
outscored East 39-20 in the second half. Murray helped itself by hitting
13-15 free throws, many of those down the stretch, to make this game
look like a rout.
East's best moment: The Leopards stayed close in the first half, and
were actually in the game until the final period. Christian Brown had 15
points, including three treys, while Jeff Vargas had 14.
Statistical notes: Murray had lost four straight games. Duran had four
three-pointers for Murray. Scott Paulsen had nine points for Murray. The
Leopards have now lost three straight.
What we learned from this game: Murray needed this game if it has any
chance at post-season play. The Spartans started the region schedule
with three of the toughest teams, but now it gets much easier.
Next: Murray returns home to play Granger on Jan. 20. East travels to
Cyprus the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,
Jan. 13 - Highland 58, Murray 48
Story of the game: The outside-inside combination of Spenser Bowen
and Latu Heimuli made a huge difference as Highland rallied to beat
Murray in a Region 6 game.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans shot their way to an 18-11
first-quarter lead, but it melted away after that. Markus Duran had 20
points and Ken Masic 15, but John Hunt was held to four.
Highland's best moment: Bowen scored 20 points, including four
three-pointers, which was the scoring performance of any Ram this
season. The Rams trailed after the first quarter, but slowly crept back
and then pulled away late in the game.
Statistical notes: This was Highland's best scoring effort - as a team -
this season. It was also Murray's worst, so the Rams were able to slow
the tempo and play their game. Heimuli's 15 points was a season high.
What we learned from this game: This was a big win for Highland, and
a lousy loss for Murray. The Spartans came into the season with hopes,
but now they're in the region cellar after playing what is probably the
region's best three teams.
Next: Murray plays at East on Friday (Jan. 16). Highland travels to
Granger the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score,
Jan. 9 - West 60, Murray 57
Story of the game: Tyrell Corbin and Chris Barnes scored 17 points
each, but it was Tyler Jackson's three-pointer at the buzzer that lifted
West to a comeback victory over Murray in a Region 6 game.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans' two-man scoring duo of John
Hunt and Markus Duran put on a show, especially in the first half. Hunt
finished with 24 points and Duran had 21.
West's best moment: The Panthers trailed 42-35 going in the fourth
quarter, but put together a nice rally that didn't end until Jackson's shot.
Daniel Wray had 12 points and Jackson eight as West stayed unbeaten.
Statistical notes: What happened to Murray's Ken Masic? He didn't
score. Did he play? Duran had five three-pointers and Hunt had four.
Corbin had a pair for West.
What we learned from this game: Murray's schedule means it has to
play the two best teams in the region right away, and the Spartans lost
both. No reason to worry ... yet. Let's see what happens next week.
Next: Murray has another home game against Highland on Jan. 13.
West travels to play rival East the same night.

Jan. 6 - Olympus 81, Murray 74
Story of the game: Will Watkins and Corbin Green scored 20 points
apiece as Olympus escaped with an overtime victory over Murray in their
Region 6 opener.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans had Oly on the ropes, thanks a lot
to John Hunt's outside shooting. Murray led 37-33 at halftime, but gave
away the lead in the third quarter. Hunt finished with 24 points, while
Markus Duran had 18.
Oly's best moment: This game was close throughout, and the fourth
quarter featured a combined 46 points. Oly had a better inside game,
and hit 32-43 free throws. Connor Brady added 18 points.
Statistical notes: Murray had eight three-point baskets, but had less
than half as many free-throw attempts. Oly held Murray to just six points
in the third quarter.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game and, at
some point, Murray will have to break through and win a game that it
wasn't suppose to win. The Spartans are headed for a .500 region
season unless that happens.
Next: returns home to play West on Jan. 9. Oly travels to Highland the
same night.

Dec. 30 - West Jordan 71, Murray 60
Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 21 points as West Jordan
rallied past Murray in the second half and took the non-region victory.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans offense pretty much stayed on the
perimeter. Murray used Markus Duran's shooting to jump to a 17-10
first-quarter lead. Duran finished with 20 points, including four
three-pointers.
West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed 36-33 at halftime, but
dominated the third period, outscoring Murray 19-9, to grab the lead.
Mason Sawyer backed up Weirick with 15 points.
Statistical notes: West Jordan was 20-23 from the free-throw line;
Murray was just 4-7. Ken Masic had 15 points for Murray. Tyson Holt and
Reyes Gallegos had 12 points each for the Jags.
What we learned from this game: West Jordan is one of the best 5A
teams in the state. The Spartans have a 3-4 record going into Region 6
action, but have played some tough teams.
Next: Murray travels to Olympus to start region play Jan. 6. West Jordan
goes to Taylorsville the same night.

Dec. 20 - Murray 65, Cedar 50
Story of the game: John Hunt had a season-high 21 points and led four
players in double figures as Murray blew open the game in the second
half and beat Cedar at the Utah Summer Games Invitational at SUU.
Murray's best moment: In the past, it has been Ken Masic and Markus
Duran leading the Spartans, so this is yet another person to take the
scoring load when needed. Murray trailed 32-31 at halftime, but its
defense held Cedar to just six points in the third quarter.
Cedar's best moment: The Redmen stayed with Murray in the first half,
and also matched the Spartans' shooting with six three-point baskets.
The loss dropped Cedar to 1-6.
Statistical notes: This game was played primarily at the perimeter as
there were few fouls - and few free throws. In a shooting game, few
teams will be able to stay with Murray.
What we learned from this game: The 50 points Murray gave up was its
best defensive showing this season.
Next: Murray is home for the holidays and plays host to Jordan on Dec.
30. Cedar goes to Delta the same day.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. There was no report in the Salt Lake
Tribune.
Dec. 19 - Davis 66, Murray 46
Story of the game: James Cowser scored 18 points as Davis built a
huge first-half lead and turned back Murray in the opening round of the
Utah Summer Games Invitational in Cedar City.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans were out of the game by halftime,
but they played even in the second half. Markus Duran led Murray with 12
points. The Spartans had six three-point baskets.
Davis' best moment: The Darts came ready to play. Davis led 22-10
after one quarter and 41-19 at halftime. Davis emptied its bench in the
second half and 10 different players scored.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot about 50 percent from the free-throw
line. The 46 points on offense was a season low - by far.
What we learned from this game: Murray didn't come ready to play, and
it showed. The Spartans get to play again quickly, though, so we'll see if
they can rejuvenate themselves.
Next: Murray takes on Cedar today. Davis will take on Centennial, Nev.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. There was no report in the Salt Lake
Tribune.
Dec. 16 - Murray 77, Taylorsville 69 (OT)
Story of the game: Markus Duran came alive, scoring 25 points, to help
Murray rally from a first-half deficit and hand Taylorsville its second
straight overtime loss.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans have a lot of shooters, led by
Duran, who had six three-point baskets. Murray had 11 for the game. T.J.
Alofipo had a season-high 15 points and Ken Masic 14. The game was
tied 64-64 before Murray took over.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors took a 19-9 first-quarter lead.
Stevie McCloyn had a season high 22 points, while Jordan Edgington
had 19.
Statistical notes: The Spartans had 11 three-pointers, while Taylorsville
had just one. Taylorsville made 28 of 45 free throws. Murray was 13-16.
What we learned from this game: This was a big win for Murray,
although the Spartans are starting to show they have to outscore teams
in order to win.
Next: Murray travels to Cedar City to play in a two-day tournament at
SUU. Taylorsville plays at Layton Friday (Dec. 19).
Links: The Salt Lake media did not cover the game. To read the Deseret
News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click

Dec. 9 - Jordan 71, Murray 62
Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 20 points as Jordan took
the lead with a big second quarter and held off Murray in a non-region
game filled with plenty of offense.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans are about offense, and Ken Masic
came through again with 19 points, which means opponents can't
double-team Markus Duran, who had 14. John Hunt put it 15 for Murray,
giving the Spartans plenty of outside threats.
Jordan's best moment: Bernardo has been Jordan's most consistent
scorer. He hit several mid-range jumpers as the Beetdiggers outscored
Murray 21-11 in the second quarter. The Diggers also canned 13-18 free
throws, which was enough to hold off the Spartans' comeback.
Statistical notes: There were 13 three-point baskets in this game -
seven by Jordan, six by Murray. Curt Follett had 12 points for Jordan;
Colton Burgon dropped in 10.
What we learned from this game: This was a good win for Jordan over
what might eventually be a solid 4A team.. However, until Murray learns
how to play defense, it won't develop into that "solid" team.
Next: Murray plays host to Taylorsville on Dec. 16. Jordan travels to take
on Bingham on Friday (Dec. 12).
Links: The Salt Lake media did not cover the game. To read the Deseret
News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click

Dec. 5 - Murray 84, Hunter 78
Story of the game: Ken Masic scored 32 points and Murray built a huge
lead and then watched as Hunger put on a fantastic comeback, before
falling just short.
West's best moment: The Spartans put on a show in the opening half.
Masic and Markus Duran led the way as Murray scored 32 points in the
second quarter alone.
Hunter's best moment: Trailing 57-29 at halftime, the Wolverines didn't
give up. Jeff Poole lit it up, scoring 38 points as Hunter came within four
points near the end. A.J. Patailii added 19 points for Hunter.
Statistical leaders: Murray hit 14-19 free throws, including several at the
end that allowed the Spartans to hang on to the win.
What we learned from this game: This was two separate games.
Duran and Masic had three treys. If Murray has any hopes of winning
games, it needs someone to back up Duran and the Spartans got it here.
Next: Murray travels to play Jordan Dec. 9. Hunter will play its first home
game against Taylorsville Dec. 12.

Nov. 26 - Riverton 75, Murray 60
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 25 points as Riverton rallied from a
first-quarter deficit to beat Murray in the season opener for both teams.
Murray's best moment: This game was full of offense, and Murray
helped supply it. Markus Duran led the way with 23 points and the
Spartans canned eight shots from behind the three-point line. Murray led
19-12 after one quarter and 36-34 at halftime.
Riverton's best moment: The halftime pep talk worked because the
Silverwolves came out and outscored Murray 24-10 in the third quarter.
The offense was clicking the entire second half. Murray was eventually
forced to foul and Riverton hit 24-33 from the line.
Statistical notes: Ken Masic backed Duran with 14 points, while John
Hunt added 12. Sean Neilson had 17 and 6-foot-7 Ryan Thomas had 15
for Riverton. Murray was only 4-10 from the line.
What we learned from this game: Murray's offense is based around
Duran, but defense wins championships. The Spartans may win their
share of games, but unless they can stop someone, they'll be lucky to
make the post-season.
Next: Murray returns home to take on Hunter in a non-region game Dec.
5. Riverton will play at Northridge Dec. 2.
