Feb. 24 - Orem 50, Murray 44
Story of the game: Maggie Plothow scored 19 points and Lisa Love
had 14 as Orem upset cold-shooting Murray in the opening round of
the 4A state tournament.
Murray's key moment: The Spartans had trouble shooting, and
became the first No. 1 seed to be ousted from the tourney. Murray
shot 32 percent overall, and just 25 percent (6-24) from three-point
range. Amy White led Murray with 18 points, while Mariah Duran had
11.
Orem's key moment: The Tigers were able to get ahead early, and
the added momentum was evident as the game progressed. Lauren
Chung-Hoon hit three of four free throws late in the game to clinch it.
Statistical notes: Orem had a record of 9-13 entering the game.
White and Duran each had three treys for Murray. Four of five Region
6 teams were defeated in the first round.
What we learned from this game: Certainly Murray had higher
aspirations than losing in the opening round, but it shows that
anything can happen in post-season, and getting off to a good start is
important.
Next: Murray finished the season with a 14-6 record. Orem advanced
to play rival Mountain View.

Woodard added 11 as Murray ran off to a big lead and held on to beat

quarter, but built a 14-point margin after the second and third periods.

led Granger's fourth-quarter rally. Tuigamala finished with 14 points
and Lavekihelotu had 10. Granger held Murray to just two points in
the final quarter.
Statistical notes: The teams shot comparably at the free-throw line.
Granger did not have a three-point basket. Mariah Duran had nine
points for Murray.
What we learned from this game: The Spartans knew they had to
win this game to capture the title. But Olympus lost so Murray finishes
in sole possession.

Feb. 24. Granger is done for the season.

Feb. 13 - Murray 52, East 31
Story of the game: Mariah Duran scored 18 points as Murray blew
out East with a big third quarter to remain in first place in Region 6.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 21-17 at halftime, but blew
the game open by outscoring East 19-2 in the third period. Duran had
three of Murray's six three-point baskets.
East's best moment: The Leopards led 12-10 after the first quarter,
but had trouble outscoring after that, generating just five and two
points in the next two quarters. Whitley Jenkins topped East's scorers
with 10 points.
Statistical notes: Murray hit 14-24 free throws, while East was just
8-23. East is averaging just 32 points in region play.
What we learned from this game: Murray just needs to beat Granger
in its regular-season finale to earn the No. 1 seed, since it owns the
tiebreaker with co-leader Olympus.
Next: Murray finishes the regular season at home against Granger
Feb. 17. East plays host to Cyprus the same night.

Murray's best moment: White, who used to attend Highland, had her
best game of the season. The game was close all the way, but the
Spartans outscored Highland 8-3 in the extra session. Mariah Duran
added 11 points.
Highland's best moment: Beauty Tuakalau and Chanel Roe led
Highland with 12 points, but the Rams rode the scoring and
playmaking of Mixsa Kafi, who finished with 10 points. Anatoa Lauti
hit a three-pointer with 14.9 seconds left to send the game into
overtime.

fourth quarter, and it was almost enough to earn the win. Mariah
Duran had 19 points, including four three-pointers.

quarter and even managed to extend it to a 12-point margin entering
the final period. Lomalinda Talakai had eight points. Three others

was 10-18. Maddy Woodard had nine points for Murray.

that will play a big role in seeding for the 4A state tournament.

three-pointers, as Murray held off Cyprus and withstood a 29-point
effort by Kirstie Henriod.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans held a 35-27 lead going into
the fourth quarter, but Henriod's scoring pulled Cyprus close and
made it a game. Murray hit enough of its free throws to hang on.
Maddy Woodard added 10 points.
Cyprus' best moment: Henriod was virtually a one-woman scoring
show, and she had a pair of three-pointers during the game. Cyprus,
however, left some points off the scoreboard by not hitting its free
throws.
Statistical notes: Cyprus was 13-24 from the free-throw line; Murray
was 10-15. Cyprus outscored Murray 18-15 in the fourth quarter. The
win as Murray's eighth straight.

the start of the game and beat Olympus to move into a first-place tie
with the Titans in Region 6.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans started quickly, jumping to a
10-2 first-quarter lead. Murray prevented any comeback, even though
it didn't shoot free throws very well.
Oly's best moment: The Titans didn't have enough offense. They
were held to just 11 points in the first half, and didn't have enough to
make a rally. Heather Giffin was the top scorer with eight points.
Statistical notes: Murray was 5-13 from the free-throw line; Oly was
7-13. Oly's 30 points was its lowest since the Riverton game Dec. 4.

and Eleni Saltas added 12 apiece as Murray held off Cyprus in a
Region 6 game that down to the wire.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 10-5 after the first quarter
and kept the advantage until the final period. The Spartans played
without leading scorer Mariah Duran and were still able to get the win.
Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates had a chance to win this game,
and perhaps a little better effort from the free-throw line would have
helped. Kirstie Henriod had 13 points, while Sanshae Rasmussen
had 10.

was 9-17. Murray had six three-pointers (Saltas 3, White 2, Woodard),

game to lose, but Murray held on and stayed within one game of
first-place Olympus.
Next: Murray has a home game against Cottonwood Jan. 27. Cyprus
plays at Olympus the same night.

points for the Panthers.

4-11. Amy Christensen had eight points for West. The Panthers

half their points in the fourth quarter. Brynn Foster led the way with 11
points.
Statistical notes: Duran had three treys for Murray, and White had

Story of the game: Sadie Clements scored 13 points and Ashley
Kroneberger had 12 as Springville poured it on Murray in a

and 42-13 at halftime. The defense limited Murray to a season-low
point total. Lexi Eaton added 11 points for Springville.

Statistical notes: Taylorsville was 12-22 from the line. Murray was
4-12. The point totals were season lows for both teams.

Dec. 5 - Judge Memorial 35, Murray 26
Story of the game: Mikelle Mancini scored 15 points as Judge broke
away from host Murray in the middle two quarters and beat the
Spartans in a battle of cold-shooting teams.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans played best in the first quarter.

than six points per quarter the rest of the way.

third period.
Tooele's best moment: The Buffaloes dropped to 0-3 with the loss.
Tooele simply had trouble scoring in this game. Sharon Lyman had
five points for Tooele.

would have be a low for the entire season last year. Duran had two
three-pointers for Murray.

played good defense and earned a road victory to start its season.
Next: Murray plays host to Judge Memorial on Dec. 5. Tooele takes
