Feb. 24 - Roy 41, Olympus 30

Story of the game: Krystin Jachim scored 14 points and Alissa
Woodard had seven points and 10 rebounds as Roy surprised
Olympus in the first round of the 4A state tournament.

Olympus' best moment: The Titans never led, and didn't seem
ready to play. They had turnover problems and shot poorly. Carly
Duckworth led Olympus with 10 points.

Roy's best moment: The Royals jumped to a 6-0 lead and seemed
to frustate Olympus, holding them to a season-low 30 points.

Statistical notes: The Titans shot just 3-13 from the free-throw line.
This was Roy's first tournament win since 2004. Oly fell in the first
round, just like last year.

What we learned from this game: Olympus didn't play its game,
and the outcome was predictable early.

Next: Olympus finished the season with a 13-9 record. Roy
advanced to play Springville in the quarterfinal round.

Feb. 17 - West 39, Olympus 37

Story of the game: Destynee Rios hit a three-pointer - her only
points of the night - as the final buzzer sounded lifted West an upset
victory in the Region 6 finale for both teams.

Olympus' best moment: Heather Giffin scored 15 points to lead
Olympus. The loss wasn't too surprising as the Titans haven't been
playing their best basketball lately.

West's best moment: The Panthers trailed 28-24 entering the final
quarter and were down by a point when Rios scored the winning
basket. Amy Christensen finished with 11 points and Ashley
Quarles had 10.

Statistical notes: West shot 6-10 free throws, while Olympus was
only 5-13. West hit three treys, while Olympus didn't have any.

What we learned from this game: Since Murray won, Olympus
earned the No. 2 seed. This loss just didn't hurt the Titans'
momentum and it means it won't add another trophy to their trophy
case.

Next: Olympus and West both advance to the state tourney.
Olympus takes on Roy on Feb. 24.
West will play Springville.

Feb. 13 - Olympus 43, Cottonwood 38

Story of the game: Annie Canevari scored 10 points and Olympus
hit its free throws late in the game to rally past Cottonwood in a
Region 6 game.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 22-18 at halftime, but came
out and dominated the third quarter to take a lead they never
relinquished. Heather Giffin added nine points and Amanda Diblee
had eight.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts played a good first half.
They were looking for an upset win that could move them up in the
standings. Alyssa Moreno led the Colts with 10 points, while
McKenzie Anderson had 10.

Statistical notes: Oly was 13-20 from the free-throw line;
Cottonwood was just 4-11. Anderson had two three-pointers for
Cottonwood. Oly had none.

What we learned from this game: Olympus kept pace with Murray
and stayed tied for first place. Murray owns the tiebreaker if the
teams finish tied.

Next: Olympus plays at West Feb. 17. Cottonwood takes on Murray
at home the same night.

Feb. 10 - Olympus 58, Granger 57

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 20 points as Olympus
rallied from a big first-quarter deficit to edge Granger in a Region 6
game.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 18-7 after the first quarter
and still were 10 points behind at halftime. They scored 41 of their
58 points in the second half. Kainoa Bowman added 15 points.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers dominated the first half and
seemed confident heading into halftime. Mary Lavekihelotu led with
22 points and Vahine Tuigamala had 15.

Statistical notes: Granger hit seven three-pointers in the game.
This was the Lancers' best offensive output of the season. All of
Bowman's points came on three-pointers for Olympus.

What we learned from this game: Despite their records, Oly had a
tough time with Granger, winning by only two points in their other
game.

Next: Olympus plays host to Cottonwood on Feb. 13. Granger has
Highland at home the same night.

Feb. 6 - Highland 37, Olympus 32

Story of the game: Mixsa Kafi scored 16 points and Highland hit
enough of its free throws down the stretch to hold off Olympus and
move into a tie for first place in Region 6.

Oly's best moment: The Titans scored more than half their points
in the fourth quarter. Heather Giffin had 11 points, but the 32 points
scored was among its lowest of the season.

Highland's best moment: Highland led throughout the game. The
Rams' defense kept them ahead when the offense was having
trouble. Highland led 24-14 entering the fourth quarter, and then
held on.

Statistical notes: Oly was just 9-21 from the free-throw line;
Highland was 11-20. The Rams' 37-point effort was its lowest of the
season.

What we learned from this game: The loss means there is
currently a three-way tie for first place and Highland plays Murray
next, so that will reduce it to two teams if Oly keeps winning.

Next: Olympus has Granger at home on Feb. 10. Highland plays
host to
Murray the same night.

Feb. 3 - Olympus 40, East 33

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 14 points and Amanda
Diblee had 11 as Olympus grabbed the lead in the second quarter
and held off East in a Region 6 game.

Oly's best moment: The game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter,
but the Titans outscored East 11-3 to take a halftime lead. The
teams played evenly in the second half and Oly bounced back from
its loss to Murray.

East's best moment: The Leopards played tough, but just couldn't
creep close enough in the second half. Laura Kruse had 11 points
for East, including the team's only three-pointer.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot badly from the free-throw line.
Oly was 10-20 and East 4-9. Carly Duckworth had Oly's only
three-pointer. Ironically, Oly beat East by 19 points in East's gym.

What we learned from this game: Oly started another win streak
(one game), but the Titans didn't play as well against East as they
had hoped.

Next: Oly has Game 2 of a four-game home stand, taking on
Highland Feb. 6. East has Cottonwood at home the same night.

Jan. 30 - Murray 43, Olympus 30

Story of the game: Ame White scored 14 points as Murray led from
the start of the game and beat Olympus to move into a first-place tie
with the Titans in Region 6.

Oly's best moment: The Titans didn't have enough offense. They
were held to just 11 points in the first half, and didn't have enough to
make a rally. Heather Giffin was the top scorer with eight points.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans started quickly, jumping to a
10-2 first-quarter lead. Murray prevented any comeback, even
though it didn't shoot free throws very well.

Statistical notes: Murray was 5-13 from the free-throw line; Oly was
7-13. Oly's 30 points was its lowest since the Riverton game Dec. 4.

What we learned from this game: Murray's win puts the Spartans
into a first-place tie with Olympus with five games remaining.

Next: Olympus has East at home on Feb. 3. Murray plays host to
Cyprus the same night.

Jan. 27 - Olympus 37, Cyprus 29

Story of the game: Carly Duckworth scored 12 points, and had five
steals on defense, as Olympus finally pulled away in the fourth
quarter from an inspired Cyprus team in a Region 6 game.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 15-14 at halftime, but took
the lead in the third quarter and then put Cyprus away in the final
period. Oly was just 11-23 from the free-throw line, but hit enough to
hold on to the win.

Cyprus' best moment: Kirstie Henriod was really the Pirates' lone
scoring threat. She had 17 points, but the Cyprus defense is what
kept this game so close. Ashlyn Mulford added eight points.

Statistical notes: Only three players scored for Cyprus. Oly
outscored Cyprus 11-5 in the fourth quarter. Cyprus was just 1-4
from the free-throw line. Amanda Diblee had eight points for Oly.

What we learned from this game: Oly kept their unbeaten region
streak going, but it wasn't easy. Good teams should be peaking
late, and Oly's not showing that.

Next: Olympus travels to play Murray in a key Region 6 game.
Cyprus goes to Highland the same night.

Jan. 23 - Olympus 45, East 26

Story of the game: Carly Duckworth scored 12 points and Heather
Giffin and Amanda Diblee had nine each as Olympus downed East
to stay unbeaten and in first place in Region 6.

Oly's best moment: The Titans led the entire game. It was 25-16 at
halftime, but then Oly outscored East 11-2 in the third quarter to
make the advantage insurmountable. Kaitlyn Adamson had a pair
of three-pointer for Oly.

East's best moment: East stayed with Oly in the fourth quarter,
when the game was already out of reach. Leading scorer Liz Fetzer
recovered quickly from laser-eye surgery to lead East with 12 points.

Statistical notes: East scored just four points in the opening
quarter, and was held to two in the third period. Oly was 17-27 from
the free-throw line; East was 6-10.

What we learned from this game: Oly has now moved through the
first half of the region season without a loss. This could have been
a "trap game," but both Oly's boys and girls teams avoided the
upset.

Next: Oly returns home to take on Cyprus Jan. 27. East goes to
Highland the same night.

Jan. 20 - Olympus 49, West 40

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 19 points and pulled
down eight rebounds as Olympus held off West and stayed
unbeaten in Region 6 play.

Oly's best moment: The Titans led the entire game, thanks to a
15-7 spurt in the first quarter. They spent most of the fourth quarter
at the free-throw line, where they ended up hitting 21-34 shots.
Annie Canevari added nine points.

West's best moment: The Panthers made a nice rally in the
second quarter to get back into the game and were never really out
of it until the final seconds. Amy Christensen had 14 points and
Valencia Manu 10.

Statistical notes: West actually had three more field goals than Oly,
but the free-throw difference was just too much. Kainoa Bowman
had a pair of three-pointers for Oly. Rikie Gregg and Manu had two
each for West.

What we learned from this game: It must have felt nice to have a
home game after three straight on the road, and the Titans are still
in the region's drivers seat following six straight wins.

Next: Oly travels to play East on Jan. 23. West will meet Highland at
home the same night.

Jan. 16 - Olympus 34, Cottonwood 18

Story of the game: Heather Giffin and Kaitlyn Adamson scored nine
points each, but it was the Titans' defense that suffocated
Cottonwood and allowed Olympus to claim the Region 6 victory.

Oly's best moment: Olympus jumped out to an 11-3 first-quarter
lead and then held Cottonwood to just two points in the second
quarter. The Colts simply couldn't score. Oly was never headed.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts finally got some offense in
the fourth quarter, scoring half of their point total. Fehi
Fakailoatonga had eight points for Cottonwood.

Statistical notes: The 18 points is a season low for Cottonwood.
Oly led 16-5 at halftime. Cottonwood also did not make a
three-point basket.

What we learned from this game: This game was the first big one
in region play and Oly passed, thanks to its great defensive effort.
The Titans are now the team to beat.

Next: Olympus has a home game against West Jan. 20.
Cottonwood plays at Highland the same night.

Jan. 13 - Olympus 46, Granger 44

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 17 points, and she and
Amanda Diblee keyed a huge fourth-quarter rally that enabled
Olympus to beat Granger for its fourth straight win.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 33-21 entering the final
period, but Diblee hit a pair of big three-point baskets that sparked
the rally. Diblee finished with 12 points.

Granger's best moment: This was the Lancers' game to win ... until
the fourth quarter. Granger got 13 points from Mary Lavekihelotu.

Statistical notes: The Lancers were 3-11 from the free-throw line,
which may have Oly's rally. Martha Haiola had nine points for
Granger, which lost its fifth straight.

What we learned from this game: Oly is now alone in first place in
the Region 6 standings, and other teams will be treating them that
way until further notice.

Next: Oly travels to play Cottonwood on Jan. 16. Granger goes to
Highland the same night.

Jan. 9 - Olympus 48, Highland 45 (OT)

Story of the game: Heather Giffin and Carly Duckworth had 14
points each as Olympus and Highland battled throughout the game
and the Titans came out on top at the end of overtime.

Oly's best moment: Oly rallied in the second quarter from an early
deficit and the game was close for the rest of the game. The Titans
forced several turnovers in overtime. This game could have gone
either way.

Highland's best moment: The Rams took a 14-7 lead in the first
quarter before a raucous home crowd. Mixsa Kafi was the team's
leading scorer with 10 points, while Chanel Roe had nine.

Statistical notes: Oly was 16-24 from the free-throw line.
Surprisingly, Highland was 2-10 - on its home floor. Amanda Diblee
added 11 points.

What we learned from this game: Oly is 3-0 in region and two of its
wins have been by three points or less.

Next: Oly travels to play Granger on Jan. 13. Highland goes to
Murray the same night.

Jan. 6 - Olympus 51, Murray 44

Story of the game: Amanda Diblee scored 13 points and Heather
Giffin had 10 points and 10 rebounds as Olympus turned back
Murray in a Region 6 game.

Oly's best moment: The Titans led 32-28 going into the final
quarter, and Murray had to foul late in the game. Oly hit 21-33 free
throws, which was enough to hold on to the win.

Murray's best moment: Mariah Duran keyed the Spartans
comeback. She finished with 18 points, including five three-point
baskets. Ame White added 12 points.

Statistical notes: Annie Canevari and Carly Duckworth had eight
points apiece for Olympus. The 51 points was Oly's season high.
Only six players scored for Murray.

What we learned from this game: Oly improved to 2-0 with the win
and is on a roll after losing three straight before.

Next: Oly travels to play Highland on Jan. 9. Murray returns home to
take on
West the same night.

Jan. 2 - Olympus 42, Cyprus 41

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 17 points and Olympus
held off a determined Cyprus comeback in the fourth quarter to
claim the win in the Region 6 opener for both teams.

Oly's best moment: The Titans led most of the game, but really got
their offense going in the third quarter to take a 35-28 lead. Oly
scored just enough fourth-quarter points to win. Amanda Diblee
added 11 points.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates made a nice rally in the final
period, led by Kristie Henriod's 23 points. It marked the first time
this season that Cyprus had not won when the game was close.

Statistical notes: Oly hit 11-18 free throws, while Cyprus was 6-11.
Henriod had two three-point baskets. Ashlyn Mulford had 10 points
for the Pirates.

What we learned from this game: This was the season opener,
and probably one of many games that will be decided by just a few
points. The good teams learn how to win them. It also ended a
three-game losing streak for Olympus.

Next: Oly returns home to take on Murray on Jan. 6. Cyprus plays
Highland at home the same night.

Dec. 19 - Skyline 49, Olympus 32

Story of the game: Katie Walker scored 23 points and Skyline
rallied with a huge third quarter to take the non-region victory over its
neighborhood rival.

Oly's best moment: Heather Giffin scored 15 points for the Titans,
who rallied to take a 17-14 halftime advantage. The third quarter,
however, was Oly's demise.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led 10-4 after the first quarter,
then gave up the lead in the second. In the third quarter, Skyline
outscored Olympus 21-3 and that was the difference.

Statistical notes: Walker was the difference. She had three treys for
the Eagles, too. Skyline's 49 points was a season high. The fourth
quarter was played evenly.

What we learned from this game: This was a rivalry game, and the
Eagles certainly quieted the crowd in the third quarter. It was also
Skyline's first road win. Olympus lost its third straight - all at home.

Next: Olympus opens Region 6 play at Cyprus on Jan. 2. Skyline
goes to Weber Dec. 23.

Dec. 18 - Orem 58, Olympus 36

Story of the game: Maggie Plothow scored a season-high 26
points as Orem pulled away from Olympus in the second half and
took the non-region win.

Oly's best moment: The second quarter was Oly's only bright spot.
Trailing 11-2, the Titans got their offense going and played Orem
about even during that time. Heather Giffin had 16 points.

Orem's best moment: The Tigers held Olympus to just two points
in the first quarter and that allowed them to get a big lead. Orem
extended it throughout the second half. Angie Helsten had 13 points.

Statistical notes: Orem's 58 points was a season-high given up by
Olympus. The game was actually closer than the score indicated,
mostly due to Orem's 16-7 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

What we learned from this game: This was Oly's second-straight
loss and the difference seems to be the team's offensive output.
The team needs to give Giffin more help scoring.

Next: Olympus takes on rival Skyline tonight (Dec. 19) at home.
Orem opens region play Jan. 6 against Mountain View.

Dec. 16 - Bonneville 39, Olympus 32

Story of the game: Caitlin Penrod scored 17 points as Bonneville
pulled away in the fourth quarter and edged Olympus in a
non-region game.

Oly's best moment: The Titans trailed 14-8 after the first quarter,
but slowly rallied to even the game. The fourth quarter made the
difference. Heather Giffin had 12 points for Oly.

Bonneville's best moment: It was 29-28 entering the fourth quarter
when Bonneville outscored the Titans 10-4. Buckaway had 10
points for the Lakers, who also hit 9 of 15 free throws.

Statistical notes: Carly Duckworth and Kainoa Bowman had
three-pointers for Olympus. Oly was 10 of 16 from the free throw
line.

What we learned from this game: Oly scored just four points in the
fourth quarter, and that was a difference. This was a winnable
game. The offense needs work.

Next: Oly takes on Orem at home Dec. 18. Bonneville is off until
Dec. 30 when it plays Syracuse.

Dec. 9 - Olympus 44, Copper Hills 28

Story of the game: Heather Giffin was the leader on offense,
scoring 17 points, and teammates Carli Adams and Kaitlyn
Duckworth had four steals apiece as Olympus defeated Copper
Hills in a non-region game.

Oly's best moment: It was a 28-21 game until the Titans broke it
open in the fourth quarter. Annie Canevari backed up Giffin with
eight points.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies had trouble scoring
again, but their defense kept them in the game in the first half. They
trailed just 16-12. The game was lost in the fourth quarter. Brittany
Hackworth had 12 points for Copper Hills.

Statistical notes: Copper Hills hit 8-16 free throws, while Oly was
12-18. There were no three-pointers made in this game.

What we learned from this game: The Titans improved to 2-2 with
the win. This game shows there is still a huge talent differential in
the high schools.

Next: Olympus is off until its Dec. 16 game against Bonneville.
Copper Hills
has a home game against Alta tonight (Dec. 10).

Dec. 4 - Riverton 61, Olympus 27

Story of the game: Dani Lockhart scored 17 points and Shaye
Murphy had 14 as Riverton built a big first-quarter lead and whipped
Olympus in a non-region game.

Oly's best moment: This game was never in doubt. Olympus had
just seven field goals the entire game. Heather Giffin led the Titans
in scoring with eight points.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 22-2 after one
quarter and was able to substitute freely after that. Chelsea
Sorenson added 11 points. Eleven players scored for Riverton.

Statistical notes: This is Oly's biggest loss - to date - this season.
It's also Riverton's biggest win. Oly was 13-16 from the free-throw
line; Riverton was 11-16.

What we learned from this game: Riverton is a 5A school and a
state title contender. Maybe this wasn't a winnable game for the
Titans, but it was a good experience.

Next: Oly returns home to play Copper Hills Dec. 9. Riverton takes
on Layton the same night.

half and edged Provo for their first win of the season.

Oly's best moment: The first half was about defense; the second
half had offense. Oly led 12-10 at halftime. Annie Canevari backed
up Giffin with 10 points.

Provo's best moment: After scoring just 10 points in the first half,
the Bulldogs had 15 in the third quarter. The game was close until
the end. Ashley Kuchar had 13 points for Provo.

Statistical notes: Provo had just one point in the first quarter. Oly
was 14-24 at the free-throw line. Provo was 8-13. Provo dropped to
1-1 with the loss.

What we learned from this game: This was the Titans' first victory,
and that's always important. It was also another close game. Oly
needs to learn how to win the close ones.

Next: Olympus travels to 5A power Riverton on Dec. 4. Provo goes
to
Lehi Dec. 5.

Nov. 25 - Alta 51, Olympus 49

Story of the game: McKenzie Morrison scored 15 points and helped
engineer a six-point rally in the final two minutes to lift Alta to a
non-region win over Olympus in both team's season opener.

Oly's best moment: The Titans finally pulled together in the fourth
quarter and thought they were going to get a comeback win, only to
let it slip away. Amanda Diblee led Oly with 14, while Carly
Duckworth added 11.

Alta's best moment: Alta led most of the game, but let it get away in
the final quarter. Trailing 47-41 with about two minutes to play, the
Hawks roared back. It was an impressive victory for the road team.

Statistical notes: This game was won at the free-throw line, where
Alta hit 11-13 charity shots. Oly was 14-25. Alta outscored Oly 21-11
in the second quarter and held a 31-24 halftime lead.

What we learned from this game: It was each team's first game,
but Alta had a more crisp beginning. The Hawks did the
fundamentals well.

Next: Olympus has Provo at home on Dec. 2. Alta travels to 5A
power
Bingham the same day.
