PLEASANT GROVE FOOTBALL - 2009
Nov. 6 - Davis 17, Pleasant Grove 9

Story of the game - Tanner Hinds rushed for 182 yards and QB
Gavin Fowler threw a pair of touchdown passes as Davis downed
Pleasant Grove in a 5A quarterfinal game.

PG's best moment - The Vikings led 9-7 early in the second quarter
when Donnie Lewis scored on 3-yard run. That was PG's last score,
but the defense kept the team in the game until the final gun.

Davis' best moment - Fowler hit Daniel Moffett on a 60-yard
touchdown pass late in the second quarter to give Davis the lead at
halftime. The Darts added a field goal in the fourth quarter, and the
defense held PG to 64 yards in the second half, and controlled time
of possession.

What we learned from this game - QB Dallas Lloyd broke his leg
last week against Riverton, so Lewis was given the reigns again.
Lewis threw for 83 yards. RB Jeff Harris led PG with 69 yards rushing.

Next - Pleasant Grove finished the season with an 8-3 record. Davis
advanced to play
Hunter in a 5A semifinal.

Oct. 30 - Pleasant Grove 36, Riverton 21

Story of the game - Reserve QB Donny Lewis came off the bench to
lead two second-half touchdown drives, and RB Jeff Harris ran for
193 yards as Pleasant Grove went on the road and beat Riverton in
the first round of the 5A playoffs.

PG's best moment - The Vikings trailed 21-20 at halftime, and QB
Dallas Lloyd seemed to reinjure his shoulder on the final play before
intermission. Lewis came in and had a long run that led to the
go-ahead TD and PG kept Riverton from scoring.

Riverton's best moment - RB Tua Laei had one of his best games of
the season, with 201 all-purpose yards, as Riverton took a 21-20
lead into intermission, and seemed to have the advantage.

What we learned from this game - While PG was the higher-seeded
team, this was no upset. The key, though, might be how bad Lloyd
was hurt (again). It's unlikely PG can win the state title without him.

Next - PG travels to play Davis in a 5A quarterfinal. Riverton ended
with a 5-5 record.

Oct. 23 - Alta 23, Pleasant Grove 20 (OT)

Story of the game - Vance Bingham booted a 37-yard field in the
final seconds of regulation, and then nailed a 40-yarder in overtime
as Alta edged Pleasant Grove and earned the top seed from Region
4 in the upcoming 5A playoffs.

PG's best moment - Reserve QB Donny Lewis had a nice game, and
gave his team a chance to win. PG got the ball first in overtime, but its
field goal attempt was blocked by Alta's Brayden Payne.

Alta's best moment - The Hawks trailed most of the game, but at
least QB Jordan Brown was on the field again and they stayed close
until Bingham was ready. With the win, Alta earned its fifth straight
region title.

What we learned from this game - The Vikings lost their second
straight game without QB Dallas Lloyd, who could be back in their
playoff opener. That might inspire the team at the right time.

Next - Pleasant Grove travels to Riverton. Alta opens the 5A playoffs
at home against Weber.

Oct. 16 - Lone Peak 33, Pleasant Grove 3

Story of the game - QB Tannon Pedersen passed for 302 yards and
three touchdowns as Lone Peak took advantage of Pleasant Grove's
injury problems and handed the Vikings their first loss of the season.

PG's best moment - The Vikings' only score was a 42-yard field goal
by Winston Sorhaitz. The offense was overpowered throughout the
game. This isn't the same team without QB Dallas Lloyd on the field.
Lloyd's status for next week is not known.

Lone Peak's best moment - This was a big win for the Knights. It put
them in first place in Region 4 and assured them of a first-round
home game. Pederson completed 19 of 23 passes and made him a
candidate as one of the state's top QBs.

What we learned from this game - PG's goal of reaching the 5A title
game is now in doubt. It's interesting that one player could make
such a difference, especially with a team that is so talented.

Next - Pleasant Grove plays host to Alta. Lone Peak goes to Copper
Hills.

Oct. 9 - Pleasant Grove 12, Brighton 7

Story of the game - Jeff Harris scored on a 7-yard run with 10
minutes left, and the Pleasant Grove defense did the rest, putting
away Brighton and keeping the Vikings undefeated and in first place
of Region 4.

PG's best moment - The Vikings rallied later in the first quarter and
scored on a 15-yard pass from Dallas Lloyd to D.J. Doman. PG's
highlight was its defense after that, constantly harassing Brighton
and preventing the Bengals from any further scores.

Brighton's best moment - The Bengals scored first, and led most of
the game, thanks to a 71-yard pass from QB Derek Newell to Zane
Smith. However, Brighton was unable to do anything after that, and
mustered only 62 yards additional offense.

What we learned from this game - This was a huge win for the
Vikings, and the first of three big games they must win if they're going
to take the Region 4 crown.

Next - Pleasant Grove goes to Lone Peak. Brighton plans at
American Fork.

Oct. 1- Pleasant Grove 35, Jordan 14

Story of the game - RBs Kyle Tucker and Jeff Harris led Pleasant
Grove's running game, and the defense bottled up the Beetdiggers
most of the game, and that was enough to claim the Region 4 win.

PG's best moment - The Vikings only allowed 17 yards rushing, and
stopped Jordan from scoring late in the first half that ended up being
a big momentum boost. Harris opened the second half with a
71-yard kickoff return that set up a score.

Jordan's best moment - The Diggers got the ball first, and QB Alex
Hart led a long drive. After eight completions, he hit Cory Hunt on a
19-yard touchdown pass for the game's first score. Hart finished with
318 yards passing.

What we learned from this game - This was a nice defensive
performance, and much needed against an offense as powerful as
Jordan. It's ironic, but if you look at PG's schedule, it plays the
"weakest" team first, and the schedule gets tougher each game.

Next - Pleasant Grove travels to Brighton. Jordan plays host to Lone
Peak.

game. To read the D-News story,

Sept. 25 - Pleasant Grove 21, American Fork 7

Story of the game - Dallas Lloyd ran for two touchdowns and
passed for another as Pleasant Grove finally got its offense going in
the second half and edged American Fork in a Region 4 contest.

PG's best moment - With the score 0-0, Jason Fanaika returned the
second-half kickoff 48 yards that set up Pleasant Grove's first
touchdown. Fanaika also caught a 48-yard TD pass late in the game
to give Pleasant Grove some breathing room.

American Fork's best moment - The Cavemen probably gave
Pleasant Grove its toughest game. Ethan Wright caught an 18-yard
touchdown pass from Chase Hansen for their only score, but this
game was close to the end.

What we learned from this game - This was a tough region contest
for Pleasant Grove, and it was also AF's homecoming. The defense
is having a great season so far.

Next - Pleasant Grove plays host to Jordan. American Fork is at Lone
Peak.

Sept. 18 - Pleasant Grove 43, West Jordan 14

Story of the game - QB Dallas Lloyd had his best game of the
season, throwing four touchdown passes, and RB Jeff Harris rushed
for 101 yards as Pleasant Grove built a big lead and whipped West
Jordan in a non-region game.

PG's best moment - Lloyd had three TD throws before halftime as
Pleasant Grove built a 33-7 advantage. Lloyd completed 11 of 18
passes for 266 yards as the Vikings had 500 yards total offense.

West Jordan's best moment - Jaguars QB Adam Boelter threw for
315 yards, but was intercepted twice. Andrew Gardner and C.J.
O'Neal scored TDs for West Jordan, but the running game averaged
just two yards per carry.

What we learned from this game - This was a battle of unbeaten
teams and West Jordan came in with a highly touted offense, but
was shut down here. PG's defense has played well in all four games
this year.

Next - Pleasant Grove goes to American Fork. West Jordan plays
host to
Riverton.

Sept. 11 - Pleasant Grove 48, Hillcrest 10

Story of the game - QB Dallas Lloyd threw four touchdown passes,
and led Pleasant Grove's offense to 556 yards total offense in an
easy Region 4 victory over Hillcrest.

Pleasant Grove's best moment - Lloyd had a great game, but he
had plenty of help on offense. Defensively, PG held Hillcrest to just
six first downs, and four of those came by penalty.

Hillcrest's best moment - There wasn't much. The Huskies were
dominated and didn't score their touchdown until late in the game
Tanner Kemp hit Matt Pecht on a 35-yard scoring pass. Kemp was
9-33 passing.

What we learned from this game - The outcome of this game was
never in doubt. Hillcrest never even tried to start a running game, and
Kemp was under pressure every time he tried to throw.

Next - Pleasant Grove faces West Jordan in a non-region game.
Hillcrest
plays host to Lone Peak.

Aug. 28 - Pleasant Grove 34, Timpanogos 6

Story of the game - Dallas Lloyd threw for two touchdowns, both to
Jason Fanaika, and D.J. Doman returned two interceptions for
touchdowns to provide Pleasant Grove with a win over Timpanogos
in a non-region game.

PG's best moment - The Vikings jumped to a 24-0 lead, with all the
points coming in the second quarter. Doman then put the game
away early in the third period with a 46-yard interception return.

Timpanogos' best moment - J.D. Ashman's only catch of the game
was a 33-yard scoring pass from QB Damian Rivers. The
Timberwolves almost scored late in the second quarter when Rivers
hit Josh Harmon on a trick play, but Harmon was tackled at the 4
yard-line as time ran out.

What we learned from this game - Once again, the Vikings' defense
had a good game, and was the difference in this game. If defense
wins titles, PG has a shot this year.

Next - Pleasant Grove has a week off before playing at Hillcrest.
Timpanogos plays host to American Fork.

Aug. 21 - Pleasant Grove 16, Timpview 10

Story of the game - QB Dallas Lloyd threw two touchdown passes,
and Pleasant Grove shut down Timpview, causing three turnovers,
as the Vikings held off the Thunderbirds and ended their 36-game
winning streak.

PG's best moment - Lloyd threw both scoring passes in the first half
as the Vikings took a 16-7 halftime lead, and then turned back
Timpview on numerous occasions after that.

Timpview's best moment - The T-birds only touchdown came when
Trevor Brown hit Zack Van Leeuwen on a short pass, and he ran 80
yards for a score. DE Bronson Kaufusi had a great game on
defense, with a blocked PAT, two sacks and two pass deflections.

What we learned from this game - This was one of the best games
in Utah on season-opening weekend, and PG proved to be better.
The defense was impressive.

Next - Pleasant Grove plays at Timpanogos. Timpview travels to take
on Highland, Idaho.
