RIVERTON BOYS BASKETBALL - 2008-09
|
March 4 - Lone Peak 55, Riverton 38
Story of the game: Tyler Haws scored 24 points and Nate Austin had
22 as Lone Peak jumped to a quick 9-0 first-quarter lead and turned
back Riverton in a 5A state tournament quarterfinal game.
Riverton's key moment: Scott Friel had 16 points for Riverton, but the
Silverwolves were hurt by their poor shooting - just 26.5 percent.
Riverton made just one run at Lone Peak, but it was quickly turned
away in the third quarter.
Lone Peak's key moment: Haws had 12 points and Austin eight in
the first quarter as Lone Peak took a 23-10 lead. The margin never
fell below 10 after that.
Statistical notes: Lone Peak hit 17-22 free throws; Riverton was
10-12. Both teams had two three-pointers. Riverton's 38-point effort
tied its lowest of the season.
What we learned from this game: Riverton ends the season with an
18-5 record, and had the respect of every opponent it played. Scott
Friel should get a scholarship somewhere and play college ball.
Next: Riverton is done for the season. Lone Peak advanced to play
Bingham in a semifinal game March 6.

March 2 - Riverton 52, Clearfield 30
Story of the game: Scott Friel and Ryan Thomas scored 12 points
apiece and played a big part in Riverton's 19-0 scoring run in the first
half that built a big lead and gave the Silverwolves the easy win in the
opening round of the 5A state tournament.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves' 19-0 run made the score
25-3 and they were never threatened. Riverton limited Clearfield to 21
percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers.
Clearfield's best moment: The Falcons had trouble scoring, and
never threatened to rally. They had two three-point baskets. Alex
Nelson led Clearfield with 13 points.
Statistical notes: Riverton's 30-point defensive effort was its best this
season. Thomas led Riverton with seven rebounds. The Silverwolves
shot 49 percent from the field.
What we learned from this game: Riverton looked impressive in the
opening round and was among three of Region 3's four teams to
advance.
Next: Riverton will play tourney favorite Lone Peak in the second
round March 4. Clearfield finished with a 15-7 record.

Feb. 24 - Riverton 49, Copper Hills 37
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 21 points and Riverton took
advantage of a big foul differential to turn back Copper Hills in the
regular season finale for both teams.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves trailed after the first
quarter, but dominated after that. This was a physical game and
Riverton had to win it from the free-throw line, where they hit 20-29
shots. Garrett Gundestrup added 11 points.
Copper Hills' best moment: After taking a 14-11 first-quarter lead, the
Grizzlies had trouble scoring, managing just 12 points in the middle
two quarters. Tyler Faalogo was the top scorer with eight points.
Statistical notes: Preston Stelter and Kaden Anselmo had a pair of
three-pointers for Copper Hills. Gundestrup had two for Riverton. The
win avenged an earlier loss at Copper Hills Jan. 27.
What we learned from this game: Riverton finished the season
playing tough defense and perhaps moves on to the post-season
with that kind of mindset.
Next: Riverton will play Clearfield (another defensive-minded team) in
the opening round of the 5A state tourney March 2. Copper Hills will
play Davis the same day.

Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 20 points and Riverton pulled
away from Kearns in the second quarter to claim the Region 3 victory.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 13-8 after the first
quarter and then extended it to 29-14 at halftime. The teams played
evenly after that. Riverton hit its free throws down the stretch. Ryan
Thomas added 13 points.
Kearns' best moment: Fatu Moala had 14 points to lead the Kearns
offense, which was coming off one of its best scoring efforts of the
season.
Statistical notes: Surprisingly, Kearns did not have a single
three-pointer, despite trailing the entire game.
What we learned from this game: With the win, Riverton clinched at
least a No. 3 seed at the 5A state tournament.
Next: Riverton finishes the season at home against Copper Hills
Feb. 24. Kearns plays host to West Jordan the same night.

Feb. 13 - West Jordan 59, Riverton 55
Story of the game: Mason Sawyer scored 16 points and West Jordan
hit its free throws late in the game to hold off Riverton and move into
second place in the Region 3 standings.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves took a 10-4 first-quarter
lead, but couldn't hold it. They hit seven three-point baskets in the
game. Sean Neilsen had 19 points for Riverton, while Scott Friel
added 16.
West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed 23-20 at halftime,
but outscored Riverton 22-13 in the third period to pull ahead. Jordan
Weirick had 15 points and Reyes Gallegos 13.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot well from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was 11-12, and Riverton 14-17. The teams split their season
series, but right now Riverton holds the tiebreaker because it has
beaten Bingham.
What we learned from this game: Riverton has clinched a berth into
the 5A state tournament, but has fallen into third place. Currently, the
Silverwolves hold the tiebreaker over West Jordan because it has
defeated first-place Bingham.
Next: Riverton goes to Kearns on Feb. 20. West Jordan plays at
Bingham the same night.

Feb. 10 - Riverton 58, Hunter 45
Story of the game: Scott Friel took over, scoring a season-high 27
points as Riverton rallied to beat Hunter in a Region 2 game.
Riverton's best moment: After losing two of three and trailing after one
quarter, Friel got the Silverwolves going. They led 27-24 at halftime,
and then slowly pulled away to earn the 13-point win.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines were looking for an upset,
and put a scare into the favored Silverwolves. Fernando Perez led
Hunter with 12 points, while Jeff Poole had 11.
Statistical notes: Riverton was 11-14 from the free-throw line; Hunter
was 9-16. Garrett Gundestrup had 13 points, including two
three-pointers. Riverton won the season series, but neither game
was easy.
What we learned from this game: Riverton clinched a 5A tournament
berth with the win, and now must play out the season to determine its
seeding.
Next: Riverton has a big game at West Jordan Feb. 13. Hunter takes
on Kearns at home the same night.

Feb. 6 - Bingham 63, Riverton 57
Story of the game: Remington Peck scored a season-high 26 points,
including 12 in the pivotal fourth quarter, as Bingham edged Riverton
and moved into first place in Region 3.
Riverton's best moment: Riverton never gave up and Scott Friel, Ryan
Thomas and Garrett Gundestrup silenced the home crowd as it took
that five-point lead. Friel was the team's top scorer with 18 points.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners had a narrow lead most of the
game, but lost it in the fourth period when Riverton scored seven
straight points to take a 53-48 advantage. Peck then hit a pair of
three-pointers and Bingham made 5-6 free throws down the stretch.
Statistical notes: Peck had four three-pointers and took over the
scoring load when Ben Clifford was saddled with foul trouble. Clifford
still finished with 14 points. Thomas had 14 for Riverton, and
Gundestrup added 10.
What we learned from this game: This game likely decided the region
title. The 57 points given up was Riverton's most since Nov. 26
against Murray.
Next: Riverton plays host to Hunter on Feb. 10. Bingham travels to
Kearns the same night.

Jan. 30 - Riverton 56, Kearns 39
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 24 points - his best scoring night
since the season opener - as Riverton pulled away from Kearns in
the second half and earned a Region 3 win.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 23-19 at halftime, but
outscored Kearns 18-9 in the third period to give themselves some
breathing room. Riverton hit 21-27 free throws, many of those late in
the game.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars stayed close, and played one of
their better games. Fatu Moala and Justyn Searle led Kearns with
eight points apiece.
Statistical notes: Kearns was 8-16 from the free-throw line. Both
teams hit three treys. Friel had a pair for Riverton.
What we learned from this game: Riverton got back on the winning
track, and now has a week to prepare for its rematch at Bingham.
Next: Riverton plays at Bingham Feb. 6. Kearns is at Copper Hills the
same night.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Jan. 27 - Copper Hills 50, Riverton 46 (OT)
Story of the game: Tyler Faalogo scored 12 of his 20 points in the
fourth quarter, including a layup that sent the game into overtime, and
that propelled Copper Hills to its biggest win of the season over
Riverton.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves played good defense, as
usual, but just couldn't pull away from their rivals. Scott Friel led with
14 points.
Copper Hills' best moment: The game was close throughout, and
Faalogo put the team on his shoulders and had a season-best night.
Riverton was able to stop the Grizzlies' usual scorers. Myles Spencer
added 10 points.
Statistical notes: This was a defensive battle, with plenty of fouls and
free throws. Both teams shot about the same from the free-throw line.
The game was tied 43-43 at the end of regulation.
What we learned from this game: Riverton's one-game lead in the
region standings is now gone, and the Silverwolves still have to play
at West Jordan and Bingham. The rest of the season should be
interesting.
Next: Riverton takes on Kearns at home on Jan. 30. Copper Hills
travels to Hunter the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune brief,

Jan. 23 - Riverton 51, West Jordan 41
Story of the game: Sean Neilson scored 19 points, and Riverton's
defense put the clamps on West Jordan guard Reyes Gallegos, and
that made the difference in the Silverwolves' Region 3 victory.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves' top scorers, Scott Friel
and Ryan Thomas, couldn't score either. Garrett Gundestrup backed
up Neilson with 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Riverton
led most of the game and never gave it up, despite a bad night at the
free-throw line.
West Jordan's best moment: This was the battle for first place and
West Jordan's other guards, Mason Sawyer and Jordan Weirick,
came through. The Jags made several runs, but couldn't take the
lead in this playoff-type atmosphere game.
Statistical notes: Riverton was 7-18 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was 5-12. These teams are usually good at fundaments. How
does that happen? Neilson's 19 points was a career high.
What we learned from this game: Riverton is in sole possession of
first place and seems to have gotten back on track after its Christmas
break problems.
Next: Riverton goes to Copper Hills on Jan. 27. West Jordan returns
home to take on Kearns.

Jan. 20 - Riverton 60, Hunter 52
Story of the game: Garrett Gundestrup had another big game, leading
Riverton with 15 points, and the Silverwolves hit their free throws late
to hold off Hunter in a Region 3 game.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led the entire game, and
just slowly extended it throughout. Riverton hit 23-28 free throws.
Ryan Thomas added 11 points and Sean Neilson 10.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines stayed with Riverton most of
the way. Jeff Poole was the top scorer with 24 points, including a pair
of three-pointers. A.J. Patailii had 11 for Hunter.
Statistical notes: Riverton's top scorer, Scott Friel, had just seven
points. Hunter was 18-20 from the line. Gundestrup's 15 points was
a season high.
What we learned from this game: Riverton stayed unbeaten in region,
but it wasn't easy. Hunter made a nice upset attempt.
Next: Riverton returns home to play West Jordan Jan. 23. Hunter
goes to Kearns the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Jan. 16 - Riverton 41, Bingham 36
Story of the game: Sean Neilson scored 17 points, but was Garrett
Gundestrup's three-point shooting and Riverton's fourth-quarter
defense that allowed the Silverwolves to win their Region 3 opener
over Bingham.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves trailed 31-25 entering the
fourth quarter, but their defense forced eight turnovers after that
Gunderstrup nailed a pair of treys that keyed the momentum switch.
Scott Friel finished with 12 points and Gundestrup had 10.
Bingham's best moment: The Miners brought plenty of fans to this
road game and seemed headed for a win. Bingham got off to a 10-2
lead, but couldn't hold it. Remington Peck had 15 for the Miners.
Statistical notes: Bingham controlled the first and third quarters;
Riverton dominated the second and fourth. Ben Clifford had nine
points for Bingham. Riverton was 10-18 from the free-throw line;
Bingham was 7-14.
What we learned from this game: Riverton's gym was packed, and
the fans were alive, making it feel like a playoff contest. This win was
huge for Riverton's momentum, which had been lacking lately. Friel
made two big plays in the fourth quarter, much like a leader does.
Next: Riverton travels to Hunter on Jan. 20. Bingham plays Kearns at
home the same night.

game. To read the Deseret News story, click here. To view the Salt
Lake Tribune article, click here. To see the box score, click here.
Jan. 8 - Riverton 46, Hillcrest 45
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 20 points, including two free
throws with 14 seconds remaining that ended up making the
difference in Riverton's narrow win over Hillcrest.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 24-15 at halftime, but
Hillcrest clawed back. Riverton simply isn't the team it used to be -
not yet anyway. This is a game it could have lost, but Friel came
through in the clutch.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies scored 30 of their 45 points in
the second half, so clearly something was learned at halftime. Kyle
Maughan had his best game in a while with 19 points. Jeremy Ulrich
and Curtis Blackmore added eight each.
Statistical notes: Both teams shot free throws well. Riverton was
16-22, while Hillcrest was 13-17. Riverton is 3-0 in close games
(decided by three points or less).
What we learned from this game: It's a win, but a scary one. Riverton
goes into Region 3 play as a question mark, and it opens against
Bingham. Practice should be interesting next week.
Next: Riverton plays Bingham at home Jan. 16. Hillcrest goes to
Kearns Jan. 13.

Jan. 6 - Viewmont 49, Riverton 39
Story of the game: Chase Christensen scored 14 points and Kyle
DeHart and Blake Wilkinson added 12 apiece as Viewmont recorded
what may be the biggest upset of the high school season by beating
Riverton in a non-region game.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves hadn't played in more than
two weeks and started rusty. They did rally in the second half behind
Scott Friel's 19 points, but Viewmont had too much momentum by
then.
Viewmont's best moment: This was the Vikings' second win. They got
off to a 15-5 first-quarter lead and extended it to 27-14 by halftime.
Let's see if this victory spurs Viewmont as it enters region play.
Statistical notes: The loss was Riverton's first this season. Riverton
was just 9-19 from the free-throw line. Garrett Gundestrup hit two
three-pointers. Christensen had three treys for Viewmont.
What we learned from this game: The same thing happened to
Riverton last year. It couldn't play well after the long Christmas break.
Last year, it lost to Hillcrest. Let's see if Riverton can get back to the
team it was.
Next: Riverton travels to play Hillcrest on Jan. 8. Viewmont starts
Region 1 play at home agains Clearfield Jan. 9.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Dec. 23 - Riverton 55, Layton 46
Story of the game: Ryan Thomas scored 16 points and Riverton
rebounded with a big second half to rally to beat Layton in a
non-region road game.
Riverton's best moment: Riverton trailed 32-24 at halftime, but rallied
in the third quarter to close the gap. The Silverwolves outscored
Layton 16-5 in the third quarter to take the win. Sean Neilson had 11
points and Scott Friel 10.
Layton's best moment: The Lancers controlled the first half and had a
chance to win this game, even with their (now) 1-5 record. Taylor
Butler led Layton in scoring with 13 points, including four
three-pointers.
Statistical notes: After scoring 32 points in the first half, Layton had
just 14 in the second half. This was the third time this year that
Riverton had held an opponent to 46 points.
What we learned from this game: Riverton is playing good basketball.
Four different players hit three-pointers for the Silverwolves. Riverton
was 7-17 from the free-throw line; Layton was 5-6.
Next: Riverton is off until it plays host to Viewmont on Jan. 6. Layton
goes to Roy on Dec. 30.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Dec. 20 - Riverton 55, Granger 35
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 11 points and was the pivot man
in Riverton's offense that shot 50 percent from the field in its easy
non-region win over Granger in the Jordan tournament.
Riverton's best moment: This game was never in doubt. Riverton's
teamwork showed and worked far better than Granger's one-on-one
approach. The Silverwolves limited Granger to 25.7 percent shooting
(9-35).
Granger's best moment: Guard T.J. Tapusoa hit a three-pointer to
start the game, but the hot-tempered player was whistled for three
first-half fouls and was ejected late in the second quarter. He was
never a factor. Tre Musgrow led the Lancers with 12 points.
Statistical notes: Granger shot 1-11 from the field in the third quarter.
Riverton outrebounded Granger 30-24 with Friel and Ryan Thomas
leading with seven. Woul Koyom had seven for Granger.
What we learned from this game: Friel was named the tournament's
MVP. Riverton stayed unbeaten and is now 8-0. The Silverwolves'
teamwork and execution is what has them winning games.
Next: Riverton travels to play Layton Tuesday (Dec. 23). Granger plays
host to Copper Hills the same night.

there. To read my game blog, click here. To read the Deseret News
brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box score, click here.
Dec. 19 - Riverton 63, Lehi 46
Story of the game: Sean Neilson scored 14 points, Ryan Thomas had
13 and Jeff Tanner 12 as Riverton shot 64 percent from the field and
held off Lehi in the first round of the Jordan tournament.
Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves broke open a close game
in the second quarter with an 8-1 run. It got better in the third quarter
when Riverton outscored Lehi 20-9 for a 20-point lead.
Lehi's best moment: Will Walker had 16 points for the Pioneers, who
got 23 offensive rebounds that helped keep them closer despite their
poor shooting.
Statistical notes: Leading scorer Scott Friel scored just eight points.
The teams basically shot the same from the free-throw line. Riverton
improved to 7-0 with the win.
What we learned from this game: The Silverwolves proved their not a
one-man team as several different players came through in this
game.
Next: Riverton advanced to the title game against Granger today (Dec.
20). Lehi will play host Jordan in the consolation.

Dec. 16 - Riverton 59, Pleasant Grove 49
Story of the game: Ryan Thomas scored 18 points, but it was
Riverton's defense that made the difference in the Silverwolves
easier-than-expected non-region victory over Pleasant Grove.
Riverton's best moment: Thomas scored 14 of Riverton's first 19
points. At the same time, Scott Friel was putting the clamps on PG's
top scorer, C.J. Wilcox. Riverton led by as many as 20 points before
the Vikings rallied.
Pleasant Grove's best moment: Wilcox still finished with a game-high
29 points, but most came in the fourth quarter when the game was
already decided.
Statistical notes: Riverton had four players in double figures.
Thomas, Garrett Gundestrup (12), Sean Neilson (11) and Jeff Tanner
(10). Friel, their leading scorer, only had four.
What we learned from this game: Riverton led 27-18, helped by their
original game plan. At halftime, PG still couldn't adapt and Riverton
extended its lead. The Vikings are 3-3, but still could reach the state
tournament.
Next: Riverton is off until Friday, when it starts play in the two-day
Jordan tournament. Pleasant Grove travels to Kearns the day before.

Dec. 12 - Riverton 38, Weber 36
Story of the game: Riverton's money man, Scott Friel, scored a basket
with 2.2 seconds left to lift the Silverwolves to an exciting road win
over Weber.
Riverton's best moment: Friel finished with 16 points. This game was
close all the way, and filled with poor shooting and defense. Riverton
trailed going into the final quarter, but found a way to win.
Weber's best moment: The Warriors have had trouble scoring this
season, and this game was no different. A defensive battle was the
only way they could win. Weber put up a fine effort, but it wasn't
enough.
Statistical notes: Carson Fuller is Weber's top scorer at 12.5 points
per game, but was held to five on this night. Riverton's free-throw
shooting still needs to improve. It was 13-23 tonight.
What we learned from this game: Friel is averaging 18.2 ppg, so
Weber had to know who was going to take the last shot, and yet he
still made it. A sign of a good team is it has a leader, and Friel is it.
Next: Riverton returns home to take on Pleasant Grove Tuesday (Dec.
16). Weber fell to 1-3 and plays at Roy Wednesday (Dec. 17).

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune's story,

Dec. 9 - Riverton 49, Brighton 46
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 18 points and Riverton shook off
a poor free-throw shooting night and managed to hold off Brighton in
the Bengals' gym.
Riverton's best moment: After three "comfortable" wins, this marked
the first time the Silverwolves had to play a close game, and they
passed the test. Ryan Thomas and Sean Neilson had seven points,
while Garrett Gundestrup had a pair of three-point baskets.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals were down 24-18 at halftime,
but rallied in the third quarter to make this a game again. Corbin
Miller led the way with 17 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Statistical notes: After Friel, no other Riverton player was in double
figures. Sam Wunderli added 11 for Brighton, which shot a
respectable 8-11 from the line.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game for the
home team, but Riverton held them off. The Silverwolves did it on the
road, too.
Next: Riverton travels to Weber on Dec. 12. Brighton goes to West
Jordan the same night.

Dec. 5 - Riverton 54, Fremont 40
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 17 points and Sean Neilson
had 14 as Riverton dominated the first and fourth quarters en route to
a victory that moved the Silverwolves to 3-0 on the season.
Riverton's best moment: Riverton led 36-29 after three quarters, and
did not allow Fremont to rally. The Silverwolves kept getting fouled,
and ended up hitting 20-31 charity shots, which was good enough to
win.
Fremont's best moment: After scoring just five points in the first
quarter and falling behind, Fremont rallied behind Spencer
Montgomery's 11 points and Jacob Nish's 10.
Statistical notes: Fremont hit just 7-16 free throws. Friel, a 6-5
senior, got all of his points inside. Neilson and Marco Trujillo had
treys for Riverton.
What we learned from this game: Riverton is 3-0, but we're not yet
certain how good their opponents are. But winning games builds
confidence, and there's plenty of time before region starts.
Next: Riverton travels to play Brighton on Dec. 9. Fremont returns
home to play Roy the same night.

Dec. 2 - Riverton 58, Northridge 42
Story of the game: Ryan Thomas and Scott Friel scored 15 points
apiece and the Riverton defense held Northridge to just two
first-quarter points and claimed an impressive road victory over
Northridge.
Riverton's best moment: The first quarter was a beauty for the
visiting team. The Silverwolves took a 13-2 lead, and then extended it
to 30-13 at halftime. Northridge's three-point shots weren't dropping,
so this goes down as another good win.
Northridge's best moment: Blake Smithing led the Knights with 15
points, including their only three-pointer, and Tyce Bockwoldt had 14.
It was the season opener for Northridge, which probably gave
Riverton an advantage.
Statistical notes: Garrett Gundestrup added 10 points for Riverton,
giving the Silverwolves three players in double figures, and a good
inside-outside game. Riverton hit 10-18 free throws.
What we learned from this game: A 2-0 record puts Riverton in first
place, and gives the Silverwolves a lot of confidence, much like their
football team had.
Next: Riverton returns home to play Fremont on Friday (Dec. 5).
Northridge plays host to Copper Hills on Thursday.

Nov. 26 - Riverton 75, Murray 60
Story of the game: Scott Friel scored 25 points as Riverton rallied
from a first-quarter deficit to beat Murray in the season opener for
both teams.
Riverton's best moment: The halftime pep talk worked because the
Silverwolves came out and outscored Murray 24-10 in the third
quarter. The offense was clicking the entire second half. Murray was
eventually forced to foul and Riverton hit 24-33 from the line.
Murray's best moment: This game was full of offense, and Murray
helped supply it. Markus Duran led the way with 23 points and the
Spartans canned eight shots from behind the three-point line. Murray
led 19-12 after one quarter and 36-34 at halftime.
Statistical notes: Ken Masic backed Duran with 14 points, while
John Hunt added 12. Sean Neilson had 17 and 6-foot-7 Ryan
Thomas had 15 for Riverton. Murray was only 4-10 from the line.
What we learned from this game: Murray's offense is based around
Duran, but defense wins championships. The Spartans may win their
share of games, but unless they can stop someone, they'll be lucky to
make the post-season.
Next: Riverton will play at Northridge Dec. 2. Murray returns home to
take on Hunter Dec. 5.
