TAYLORSVILLE BOYS BASKETBALL - 2008-09
|
Feb. 24 - Brighton 79, Taylorsville 47
Story of the game: Will Cannon finished his Brighton High School
career with 21 points as the Bengals whipped Taylorsville on
"Senior Night."
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors had their moments, and
Jordan Edgington was often in the right place at the right time and
finished with 16 points.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals dominated, helped by their
fast breaking offense that had Taylorsville on its heels. Cannon had
a great night, and got help from Sam Wunderli and Austin Hudson,
who added 11 points each. Brighton had 13 different players score.
Statistical notes: Brighton led 42-28 at halftime. Brighton was
22-35 from the free-throw line; Taylorsville was 11-20. Brighton had
the only three-pointer in the game.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville seemed to give up
on this game once it fell behind early. The Warriors didn't seem to
have the depth to match Brighton.
Next: Taylorsville is done for the year. Brighton advanced to the 5A
state tournament and will play Lehi March 2.

Feb. 20 - Jordan 71, Taylorsville 58
Story of the game: Jordan Bernardo scored 25 points and Curt
Follett added 21 as Jordan beat Taylorsville and set up a Region 2
championship battle next week.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors played tough, and rode
Jordan Edgington's 19 points to stay close in the first half. Stevie
McCloyn added 11 points, but Taylorsville couldn't keep up with
Jordan's perimeter shooting.
Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers led just 31-29 at halftime,
but pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Taylorsville 20-12 to
take a 10-point lead. Follett had five of Jordan's season-high nine
three-point baskets.
Statistical notes: Taylorsville hit 16-21 free throws, while Jordan
was 18-27. Bernardo had three treys. Taylorsville had just two.
What we learned from this game: The Warriors have just one
game remaining. A win at Brighton would end their losing streak,
but it won't be easy.
Next: Taylorsville ends its season at Brighton Feb. 24. Jordan plays
at Alta the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Feb. 13 - Skyline 51, Taylorsville 44
Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh scored 22 points as Skyline
turned back Taylorsville in a Region 2 game and ended its
two-game losing streak.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors got a season-high 12
points from Brian Mundee, all on three-pointers. Stevie McCloyn led
Taylorsville with 15 points, and Jordan Edgington had 10.
Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led most of the game, but it
was close. Skyline hit 21-31 free throws, many of those in the final
quarter, to hold on.
Statistical notes: Taylorsville's six three-pointers was a season
high. The Eagles captured the season series. This was
Taylorsville's last home game of the season.
What we learned from this game: No luck for Taylorsville on
"Senior Night," but at least Mundee had a good game.
Next: Taylorsville goes to Jordan on Feb. 20. Skyline plays at Alta
the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Feb. 10 - Hillcrest 63, Taylorsville 59
Story of the game: Curtis Blackmore had a season-high 14 points
and Kyle Maughan added 13 as Hillcrest held off Taylorsville and
kept its post-season hopes alive.
Taylorsville's best moment: This was the Warriors' last best
chance to earn a Region 2 victory. Jordan Edgington had 18 points
and Stevie McCloyn 17, but their fourth-quarter rally wasn't enough.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies trailed 28-25 at halftime, but
outscored Taylorsville 18-9 in the third quarter to take the lead. The
fourth quarter was an offensive festival, but Hillcrest hit 17-24 free
throws for the game.
Statistical notes: Hillcrest's 63 points was a season high. Austin
Jackson had 11 points for the Huskies. Surprisingly, Hillcrest did
not have a single three-point basket. Tyson Taylor had 14 points for
Taylorsville.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville lost its 10th straight
game. A win over any of its last three opponents would certainly
make the Warriors a "spoiler."
Next: Taylorsville plays host to Skyline on Feb. 13. Hillcrest takes on
Alta at home the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Feb. 6 - Alta 56, Taylorsville 51
Story of the game: Ammon Olsen scored 18 points, and led Alta's
outside-shooting success, as the Hawks recorded their second
straight five-point win - this time over Taylorsville - and stayed in first
place in Region 2.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors put together an 18-12
first-quarter advantage as Daren Oakeson and Stevie McCloyn had
the hot hands. They also stayed close at the end, but couldn't cut
into the margin.
Alta's best moment: Taylorsville led most of the first half, but the
Hawks tied the game at halftime. Their defense kicked in the third
quarter and that made the difference. Nate Nielsen had 10 points
for Alta.
Statistical notes: Oakeson had 16 points for Taylorsville; McCloyn
had 15. Alta had five three-pointers, while Taylorsville had just one.
Ironically, it was also Taylorsville's second straight five-point loss.
What we learned from this game: The Warriors lost for the ninth
straight time, and have to avoid "quitting." Their best chance for a
win comes next.
Next: Taylorsville takes on Hillcrest at home on Feb. 10. Alta travels
to Brighton the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Feb. 3 - Brighton 64, Taylorsville 59
Story of the game: Will Cannon scored 21 points and Sam
Wunderli added 19 as Brighton rallied in the third quarter to edge
Taylorsville in a Region 2 contest.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors took an 18-12 lead and
got a season-best scoring night of 23 points from Stevie McCloyn.
Jordan Edgington added 15 points and Tyson Taylor had a
season-best 11.
Brighton's best moment: The Bengals trailed 30-27 at halftime, but
rallied to take a six-point lead in the third period. Cannon led the
way. He had four three-pointers as Brighton had seven baskets
from beyond the three-point line.
Statistical notes: Brighton was 17-31 from the free-throw line;
Taylorsville was 17-20. This was the second-straight game where
Cannon was the leading scorer.
What we learned from this game: This was a winnable game for
Taylorsville, and its closest contest since it last won a game.
Perhaps this is a sign of hope that the Warriors might win a game
soon?
Next: Taylorsville goes to Alta on Feb. 6. Brighton returns home to
play Skyline.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 30 - Jordan 60, Taylorsville 50
Story of the game: Curt Follett scored 15 points and Colton Burgon
added 14 as Jordan led the entire way and defeated Taylorsville in
a Region 2 game.
Taylorsville's best moment: After a tough first quarter, the Warriors
battled back and chipped at the lead, narrowing it to five points.
Jordan Edgington had 14 points and Stevie McCloyn 10.
Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers led 16-6 at the end of the
first quarter and kept a safe advantage most of the game. Jordan hit
enough free throws at the end to even extend the lead. Kevin
Goldsmith had nine points and Jordan Bernardo eight.
Statistical notes: Jordan was 15-21 from the free-throw line;
Taylorsville was 6-13.
What we learned from this game: It has been five weeks since
Taylorsville last won a game. The Warriors started slowly in this
one, or they might have had a chance.
Next: Taylorsville has Brighton at home on Jan. 30. Jordan returns
home to play Alta the same night.
Links: There was no media coverage of this game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box
score, click here.
Jan. 23 - Skyline 61, Taylorsville 42
Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh scored 26 points and Kevin
Wagstaff had a season-high 18 as Skyline dominated the second
quarter and rolled to a Region 2 victory over Taylorsville.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors scored 27 of their 42
points in the second half, and made a nice rally in the fourth quarter.
Stevie McCloyn had a season-high 20 points.
Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led 12-9 after the first quarter
and extended it to 30-15 at halftime. Skyline hit 20-30 free throws,
many of them in the fourth quarter, to easily hang on to the win.
Statistical notes: McCloyn hit three treys for Taylorsville; Brady
Wright had two. Wagstaff had a pair for Skyline. Jordan Edgington,
Taylorsville's top scorer, had just eight points.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville has lost six straight
games and, the way things are going, may not win another. This
team needs to come around like it did earlier this season.
Next: Taylorsville has Jordan at home on Jan. 30. Skyline plays
host to Alta the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 20 - Hillcrest 53, Taylorsville 41
Story of the game: Kyle Maughan scored 18 points and Hillcrest
nailed 17-18 free throws in the fourth quarter and claimed its first
Region 2 victory of the season.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors stayed close until near
the end, but their normal scorers were not coming through. Daren
Oakeson ended up leading the team with 11 points.
Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies led most of the game
by playing their style, which includes tough defense. Late in the
game, Talorsville was forced to foul and Hillcrest made them pay
for it.
Statistical notes: Hillcrest was 25-31 from the free-throw line for
the game. Bridger Dallimore backed up Maughan with 10 points.
Jordan Edgington had eight points and Stevie McCloyn seven for
Taylorsville.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville lost its fifth straight
game and now the Warriors are in the Region 2 cellar. Clearly, this
isn't the same team that started the season.
Next: Taylorsville goes to Skyline on Jan. 23. Hillcrest plays at Alta
the same night.

Jan. 16 - Alta 55, Taylorsville 44
Story of the game: Je Deleeuw scored 16 points and Ammon
Olsen had 12 as Alta pulled away from Taylorsville in the second
quarter and opened the Region 2 season with a win.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors played OK in the first
quarter, and fans hoped this might end their three-week swoon.
Jordan Edgington had 16 points and Stevie McCloyn 13.
Alta's best moment: Alta led 19-15 after one quarter, then
outscored Taylorsville 21-7 in the second period to earn an 18-point
halftime lead. The Hawks coasted after that, hitting 13-16 free
throws to prevent a comeback.
Statistical notes: The Hawks had four three-pointers, led by
Deleeuw with a pair. Taylorsville hit 11-14 free throws, so both
teams shot well from the line. This was Deleeuw's second
nice-scoring game in the last three. He has become a nice scoring
threat.
What we learned from this game: This was the Warriors'
fourth-straight loss and it now appears this team isn't what we
thought it could be - a contender. Only the top four Region 2 teams
will make the state tourney.
Next: Taylorsville travels to Hillcrest on Jan. 20. Alta plays Brighton
at home.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune

Jan. 9 - Copper Hills 46, Taylorsville 28
Story of the game: Steven Larson scored 16 points and pulled
down 10 rebounds and Copper Hills held its opponent scoreless in
the third quarter en route to a non-region win over the team formerly
known as Taylorsville.
Taylorsville's best moment: What has happened to this team?
That's three consecutive "embarrassing" defeats. The Warriors led
14-8 after the first quarter, then were outscored 38-14 the rest of the
way. Jordan Edgington led with nine points - well below his average.
Copper Hills' best moment: The game was tied 22-22 at halftime,
then the Grizzlies took over. Copper Hills ended a two-game losing
streak in impressive fashion. To hold a team scoreless for eight
minutes is rare.
Statistical notes: Copper Hills had three treys; Taylorsville none.
That means there was no outside scoring threat. The 28 points was
a season low for the Warriors.
What we learned from this game: If this was an NBA team, fans
would be rioting in the streets, and yelling for the coach to be fired.
This team had so much promise, and now it's hard to recognize
them.
Next: Taylorsville opens Region 2 play at home against Alta Jan. 16.
Copper Hills has a "makeup" game tonight (Jan. 10) at home
against Springville.

Jan. 6 - West Jordan 71, Taylorsville 36
Story of the game: Mason Sawyer scored 18 points and Jordan
Weirick had 16 as West Jordan blew out Taylorsville from the start
and rolled to the surprisingly easy non-region victory.
Taylorsville's best moment: There was none. The Warriors didn't
show up - for the second straight game. Taylorsville outscored
West Jordan 16-9 in the quarter, but it didn't mean anything at that
point. What has happened to this team?
West Jordan's best moment: This was pure domination. The
Jaguars led 29-5 after one quarter, and it was over. This was a
great road win as West Jordan was able to empty its bench.
Statistical notes: The score was 62-20 after three quarters.
Taylorsville's 36 points was its season low. West Jordan recorded
its fourth straight win.
What we learned from this game: The fans had to be disappointed
- even West Jordan's fans - because this should have been a better
game. This is two straight games where Taylorsville has been
routed.
Next: Taylorsville plays at Copper Hills on Jan. 9. West Jordan goes
to Jordan the same night.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Jan. 2 - Olympus 65, Taylorsville 38
Story of the game: Connor Brady and Corbin Green had 18 points
apiece as Olympus used its outside shooting to hand Taylorsville
its worst loss of the season.
Taylorsville's best moment: Perhaps the Warriors were rusty?
Jordan Edgington had 14 points and Stevie McCloyn 13. This was a
blowout loss, and seemingly unexplainable.
Oly's best moment: The Titans nailed eight three-point baskets
and extended the lead in the second and third quarters. Oly's
defense also held Taylorsville to a season-low total.
Statistical notes: Nick Paulos had 10 points for Oly, which won its
second straight game. It was also their first road victory. Green had
three treys, and Paulos had a pair.
What we learned from this game: This was the Warriors' worst
game this season. It can happen, and coach Burnside will likely
address it so it doesn't happen again.
Next: Taylorsville plays West Jordan at home on Jan. 6. Olympus
has Murray at home the same night.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Dec. 23 - Taylorsville 57, Judge Memorial 54 (OT)
Story of the game: Jordan Edgington scored 21 points and Stevie
McCloyn had 13 as Taylorsville rallied and claimed an overtime
victory over Judge Memorial in a non-region game.
Taylorsville's best moment: The game was close most of the way,
and Taylorsville trailed 29-26 at halftime. The Warriors made their
move in the fourth quarter, then outscored Judge 6-3 in the overtime.
Judge's best moment: This wasa winnable game for Judge. Stallon
Saldivar had 17 points for Judge, and Dee Crandall added 14.
Judge shot a perfect 12-12 from the free-throw line.
Statistical notes: McCloyn was Taylorsville's outside shooting
threat with two treys. Four different Judge players hit three-pointers.
The Warriors were 6-10 from the free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville improved to 6-2, but
finally came through with a win in an overtime game. The Warriors
won this game because of their defense.
Next: Taylorsville takes on Olympus at home on Jan. 2. Judge has
a home game against Juan Diego Jan. 3.

Tribune sent a photographer. To read the Deseret News brief, click

Dec. 19 - Taylorsville 61, Layton 53
Story of the game: Jordan Edgington scored 23 points and led a
second-half rally that allowed Taylorsville to beat Layton and end a
two-game losing streak.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors trailed 25-22 at halftime,
but outscored Layton in both the third and fourth quarters to earn the
road win. Darin Oakeson backed up Edgington with 12 points.
Layton's best moment: The Lancers rose to the occasion early in
the game. Taylor Butler led the team with 15 points. Brock Maestes
had nine. Layton fell to 1-4 on the season.
Statistical notes: Butler was Layton's outside threat, with three
three-point baskets. The Warriors' defense played better, giving up
53 points. That was one of the improvements that needed to be
made after the two losses.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville is back to winning.
The Warriors have proven they can score, but apparently it's how
they play defense that will determine their success.
Next: Taylorsville returns home to take on Judge Memorial on Dec.
23. Layton plays Riverton at home the same night.
Links: The Salt Lake media did not cover the game. To read the
Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune box

Dec. 16 - Murray 77, Taylorsville 69 (OT)
Story of the game: Markus Duran came alive, scoring 25 points, to
help Murray rally from a first-half deficit and hand Taylorsville its
second straight overtime loss.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors took a 19-9 first-quarter
lead. Stevie McCloyn had a season high 22 points, while Jordan
Edgington had 19.
Murray's best moment: The Spartans have a lot of shooters, led by
Duran, who had six three-point baskets. Murray had 11 for the
game. T.J. Alofipo had a season-high 15 points and Ken Masic 14.
The game was tied 64-64 before Murray took over.
Statistical notes: The Spartans had 11 three-pointers, while
Taylorsville had just one. Taylorsville made 28 of 45 free throws.
Murray was 13-16.
What we learned from this game: A second straight loss, and
again in overtime on the road. Once again, though, Taylorsville is
getting support for Edgington.
Next: Taylorsville plays at Layton Friday (Dec. 19). Murray travels to
Cedar City to play in a two-day tournament there beginning Friday.

Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune box

Dec. 12 - Hunter 69, Taylorsville 66 (OT)
Story of the game: Jeff Poole became a player to watch, scoring 42
points to lift Hunter to its first win of the season over previously
unbeaten Taylorsville.
Taylorsville's best moment: The Warriors weren't supposed to
lose this game. Jordan Edgington scored 26 points. They were up
28-19 at halftime and seemingly headed to victory.
Hunter's best moment: This was a night to remember. The
Wolverines rallied from seven points down to send it to overtime.
Then they outscored Taylorsville 16-13 in the extra session.
Taylorsville had no answer for Poole.
Statistical leaders: Poole had eight treys and his 42-point effort
has to be one of the best in the state this year. In four games, he is
averaging 26.7 points per game. A.J. Patailii added 10.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville was never going to
go through the season undefeated, so the loss isn't damaging. In
fact, it could end up being a good thing.
Next: Taylorsville plays the Murray on Tuesday (Dec. 16). Hunter
goes to Wasatch the next day.
Links: There was no local media coverage of this game. To read
the Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune
box score, click here.
Dec. 9 - Taylorsville 67, Kearns 53
Story of the game: Andrew Stephens scored 15 points and led a
balanced scoring attack as Taylorsville find enough offensive
firepower elsewhere to beat Kearns in a non-region game.
Taylorsville's best moment: This was a big game for the Warriors
because so many others stepped up to take the scoring load from
Jordan Edgington. Stevie McCloyn and Edgington backed up
Stephens with 12 points apiece. Daren Oakeson added 10.
Kearns' best moment: The Cougars fell way behind in the first
quarter, but played with the Warriors the rest of the game. Junior
guard Sammy Sweat had his best game of the season with 15
points, including four three-point baskets.
Statistical notes: Taylorsville outscored Kearns 20-8 in the first
quarter, which eliminated doubt about this game. They outscored
the Cougars in the third quarter, too, which helped prevent a
comeback. Trevor Simper added 12 for Kearns.
What we learned from this game: Four wins in a row, and the
Warriors' offense has been consistent. The quality of the opponents
is questionable, but that's not their fault. Taylorsville is still 4-0.
Next: Taylorsville plays at Hunter on Dec. 12. Kearns travels to
Farmington, N.M. for a three-day tournament.

the Deseret News brief, click here. To read the Salt Lake Tribune

Dec. 5 - Taylorsville 65, Cyprus 41
Story of the game: Daren Oakeson scored 14 points as Taylorsville
spread the scoring around. The Warriors jumped to a big lead and
dispatched Cyprus in a non-region game.
Taylorsville's best moment: Jordan Edgington was the big scorer
in the Warriors' first two games, but he got a lot of help this time.
Stevie McCloyn added 13 points and Mike Staker had 11.
Cyprus' best moment: Taylor Jones led the Pirates with 11 points.
After trailing 20-8 to start the second quarter, Cyprus rallied to stay
in the game at halftime. Jones, Trevor Stratton and Weston Warr hit
three-pointers for the Pirates.
Statistical notes: It was 30-21 Taylorsville at halftime, but the
Warriors outscored Cyprus 14-4 in the third to put it away. Cyprus
was 5-13 from the free-throw line, while Taylorsville was a pathetic
6-20 - on its home floor.
What we learned from this game: These teams are headed in
different directions. Cyprus still needs dramatic improvement in
order to contend in Region 6.
Next: Taylorsville plays host to Kearns Dec. 9. Cyprus is off until
Dec. 19 when it travels to Woods Cross.

Dec. 2 - Taylorsville 68, Granger 48
Story of the game: The Lancers had no answer to Jordan
Edgington, as the 6-foot-5 senior scored 31 points in the Warriors'
convincing home win.
Taylorsville's best moment: The difference was the second half.
Taylorsville led just 26-20 at intermission. Edgington was the
Warriors only player who scored in double figures. Even though
Granger knew who was going to score, it couldn't stop him.
Granger's best moment: Tre Musgrow led the Lancers with 17
points. Cody Thorup had 13 and T.J. Tapusoa 11. Granger is a
smaller, quicker team and yet has not learned how to handle bigger
players.
Statistical leaders: The Lancers have some shooters again. They
were 15-21 from the free throw line. Granger actually led 8-7 after
the first quarter.
What we learned from this game: The Warriors are smiling after
winning their first two games. Looking at their schedule, there are
some more winnable games ahead.
Next: Taylorsville plays its third straight Region 6 opponent - at
home against Cyprus Friday. Granger travels to Kearns the same
night.

Nov. 25 - Taylorsville 49, Cottonwood 47
Story of the game: Jordan Edgington scored 20 points as the
Warriors held off a Cottonwood comeback to take the narrow
non-region road win in both team's season opener.
Taylorsville's best moment: This was a good opening game, and
was close the entire way. Led by Edgington and Andrew Stephens,
who had 11 points, Taylorsville led by eight late in the game and
held on.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts lived at the three-point line
as 10 of their 15 field goals were from beyond the arc. Cottonwood
hit two straight near the end to narrow the gap to two points. But,
with the home crowd on its feet, they couldn't get closer.
Statistical leaders: Neither team could shoot free throws.
Taylorsville was 11-21 and Cottonwood 7-14. The game was tied
23-all at halftime. Tyson Reynolds led the Colts with nine points,
while Ivan Barisic and Raymond Chavez had seven.
What we learned from this game: Taylorsville had just two wins
last season, so this one stands out. The Warriors had four games
decided by five points or less last year, and lost all of them.
Next: Taylorsville opens its home schedule against Granger on
Friday. Cottonwood takes on Spanish Fork on Tuesday.
